We won’t likely see them in the TS4 version of this story, but Neven grew up with a slew of cousins. Looking after his younger cousins definitely gave him a taste for raising his own children one day.

Neven and Marcus are packing the last of Neven's things into a rental car--a bright yellow pick-up.

MARCUS Are you sure you don't want me to drive you back? I can take the train home.

NEVEN Nah, I need to practice driving.

MARCUS (surprised) You do?

NEVEN Jerry called again.

MARCUS (in a fake, menacing tone) Fucking Jerry--!

NEVEN (in a similar tone) That fucking guy--! (Neven seamlessly switches back to his normal tone.) He's still dogging me for that coordinator job at the Y downtown. We're out in the suburbs so you know...faster to drive in if I take the freeway. Because I love hurtling down the Autobaan in a four-ton death machine.

Marcus looks at him, gobsmacked, before bursting out laughing. Neven is mildly peeved.

NEVEN Hey, guy. Shut up. We were going to get a car for chauffeuring around Short Stuff, anyway.

Marcus's giggles subside, and he continues to stow boxes into the rental pickup. The mail carrier says hello to them both and passes Neven a single piece of mail.

NEVEN (reading the return address) The City of Newcrest? Looks official.

MARCUS Hubert's been amusing himself by sending me every piece of junk mail the City produces. Just toss it when you go inside.

Nev jogs into the house, then returns to haul more boxes.

NEVEN Has Hubes been your only social outlet, or have you talked to any other humanoids lately?

MARCUS Beau wants me to look at a house with him in a few days. You'll love this--it's a Betsy Marker property.

NEVEN Ugh, that woman. She wanted to give us a huge discount once she found out I was the fruit of Nadia's loins. I refused point blank. So tacky.

Marcus raises an eyebrow at him, considering the outfit he's wearing. Neven replies with a wry smile.

NEVEN Well, anyway, Nadia doesn't like her, either. Hates her commercials.

NEVEN & MARCUS (singing off-tune, making cheesy gestures) "With Betsyyy, everything turns to sooooold!"

MARCUS I hate how catchy that is.

NEVEN It's the devil's jingle. You'll have to come see the factory soon.

MARCUS I'd think you'd be done living in squalor by now.

NEVEN Nah, it's been renovated into yuppie cubbies, like art studios and little froyo shops and shit. It's nothing like here.

A pause settles in awkwardly. They continue to pack the pick-up.

NEVEN I'm counting on you to keep up with your uncle duties.

MARCUS What does an uncle do, anyway?

NEVEN You know...being awkward at parties; telling the kid to pull your finger; growing a mustache, stuff like that. You'll be a natural. Except for growing facial hair, RIP.

Neven scrubs his own immaculate scruff, and Marcus huffs a dry laugh. Then another pause catches up with them.

NEVEN ...You're gonna visit, right?

Marcus’s expression falters.

MARCUS If you have to ask, then I haven't been much of a friend to you.

NEVEN I know kids aren't your scene, is all.

MARCUS I'll be there. I'm out that way to see Alan, anyway.

NEVEN (stiffly) Right. Alan.

MARCUS Nev, I'll be there.

Neven puts the last box into the pick-up and closes the gate. He exhales a heavy breath.

NEVEN It's weird that we're going our separate ways, but in the same general direction. It's like when you back out of a parking spot at the same time as the guy next to you. You're expecting just your car to move, but then like it feels like the whole world's shifting. You know...?

Marcus blinks at him.

MARCUS You need to work on your car metaphors.

NEVEN (smiling) Fuck you, that was a car simile not a metaphor.

They hug.

MARCUS Text me when you get there. Don't--don't keep your foot on the brake the whole time, please.

NEVEN I love you, too.

Neven gets into the driver’s seat of the truck and meticulously puts on his seat belt and checks his mirrors. He puts on the headlights for good measure. Marcus touches his forehead nervously as he watches the pick-up drive away.

5. how do you choose your characters' names?

WELL.

Marcus is obviously named after Marcus Aurelius, who was the last Stoic of ancient philosophy. Marcus embodies Stoicism pretty heavily.

Neven is actually a mix of names of students I've worked with at my job, though his first name is a variation of a woman's (Nieven).

I think those are the only two that were based on reference. The rest of the characters' names were chosen based on their ethnicity/geographic background:

Danny's Filipino (though Mielo is a surname I made up)

Beau (Short for "orabeoni," an old term for "older brother") and Gina (Ji-na) are Korean

I could not make Molly (Mary) Glenn more Irish-American if I tried

Janie I wanted as the all-American girl, so she got Jane Hodge

Alan's name is francophone and, in his non-sims iteration, I imagine he's got some sort of Acadian ancestry (e.g. French-Canadian or Cajun). Atelier is not his legal surname, though.

7. whats the biggest risk you've taken with your story? did it pay off?

Collaborating with @budgie2budgie was not necessarily a "risk" because I knew Neven was in good hands with her. But it wasn't something I had thought about doing at the outset of the story. It's honestly been so much fun, though. 10/10 would do again

15. what have been the highlights of creating your story?

I don't have specifics, but generally it's been REALLY cool to have a story idea, write it, and create visuals for it. Illustration is not a skill I have, and I've always felt it must be nice to be able to craft a tangible visualization of the character or scene or whatever. So having a 3D engine like TS4 to bring my characters to life has been tremendous.

22. choose a favourite character from your story so far.

I love all my children equally...

23. choose your least favourite character so far.

...I don't care for Beau.

JUST KIDDING. I don't have a least favorite character, but I'll speak to the one whose story I wish I could retcon a bit more now that I know him better: Danny. We meet Danny at a dire, traumatizing time in his life. To give that more narrative treatment, I would've liked to both add glimpses of his past as well as more instances of his thriving at The Gutter House.

15. what have been the highlights of creating your story?

Hands down, meeting and collaborating with other simblr writers. The reason this story has lasted as long as it has is because of the support I've gotten from my NSFT buddies.

31. drop some random trivia about your story

Neven's original story line had him returning to a dysfunctional relationship with his ex, Sasha, who we've only see a brief glimpse of. I had a narrative in mind with her, but I got swept up in working with @budgie2budgie and Ruthie that she got benched. I would love to bring her back somehow because she's bright and complex and fun, but I've yet to find a way to squeeze her back in.

Tso's Chinese, Newcrest.

A Winterfest dinner at Tso's, a Chinese restaurant in a neighborhood notably rundown, even by Newcrest standards. Nadia has bought out the restaurant for the night to evade any scandal mag photographers. The Tso family idles around the restaurant while Nadia and her party eat. There's very little said at the table after niceties are passed around. Normally the curator of conversation, Nadia has checked out completely. Had the restaurant been open to the public, perhaps the noise of other diners might've eased the awkwardness. But the restaurant is mostly quiet, and it's driving Neven insane.

NEVEN --We're pregnant!

If the table was quiet before, it is now dead silent. Neven surveys the table: Maryam, Nadia's best friend, is perversely delighted by the dramatics; Nadia is stunned; Ruthie, mortified. Marcus has his usual poker face, but his eyebrows betray surprise.

MARYAM (to Ruthie) Is that why you're wearing that outfit?

NEVEN (to Maryam, in Arabic) That's your takeaway from what I said, really?

NADIA You're pregnant?

NEVEN (relenting) Technically, we haven't confirmed it yet. But we have been trying. We're tracking Ruthie's ovulation cycle, I'm eating a lot of shellfish because men's magazines told me that they help with my spermy dudes--

RUTHIE --Nev, less detail, please. I'm begging you.

MARYAM (aside, in Arabic) I knew she wore that outfit for a reason. No one would wear such an ill-fitted sweater on purpose. (to Marcus) Don't act like you don't understand me, habibi. You agree with me.

Marcus has expertly reined in a smile. He turns his attention to the group.

MARCUS We should make a toast to the soon-to-be parents. (to Nadia) Jadda, would you like to do the honors?

NADIA (struck) Jadda...what a strange thought. (A pause.) When I was a young girl, my mother told me that one day I would give her grandchildren. At the time, I had no interest in babies or even a husband because I wanted to go to school to learn and be with my friends. But even then, I thought her words were odd: give her grandchildren, like I owed them to her. (She sighs.) I see now what she meant by give: all of your life, Neveen, I have provided for you. I never once thought you owed me anything. But this...a grandchild...your child will reflect all your best efforts, just as you have for me. It's a gift from you both.

MARCUS Everyone, if you would please raise your favorite dumpling in honor of Ruthie and Neven...?
