Butter Cookies at Makeda’s Lightly crisp but also somehow soft and definitely buttery, Makeda’s butter cookies are a Memphis staple. Head to one of their two locations – 2370 Airways Blvd and 488 S Second (behind the downtown Central BBQ) to try some or any of their other baked goods. Burger at Flying Saucer I know I’ve talked about the downtown Flying Saucer’s newish burger menu before, but given their win for “Best Speciality Burger” at Best Memphis Burger Fest last week, I thought I’d give them another shout-out. This is the thick, juicy gastropub burger you miss from that “gourmet burger” fad a few years ago. Pictured here is the Whiskey Burger, but they have lots of options (and you can get any burger with turkey, chicken, or veggie patty). 3. Kunal’s Indian Pizza Pop-Up It’s back! This pop-up restaurant, hosted by The Cove, is only once a month, so this Sunday is your chance in October. Though the menu may vary from what Stacey told us about in this post, chef Kunal will be the one providing the food for this weekend’s Peg Legs and Pets event benefitting West Memphis Animal Shelter. They’ll have a band, silent auction, too. Read more. 4. Watermelon (or other fresh fruit) Paleta from La Michoacana This week has been magnificently autumnal. Alas, on Saturday it’s apparently going to be close to a record high. Quench your sweaty sadness with a delicious, super fresh, probably-no-extra-sugar fresh fruit pop from Summer Avenue’s La Michoacana. I like the watermelon and the pineapple flavors, though you will get some bits of fruit/seeds in there. 5. Flatbread at Beauty Shop’s brunch (Sunday only) The Beauty Shop is a Memphis brunch must. This flatbread dish is light but filling, with some wedges of pita-like bread, poached eggs, burrata, and the veggies that make up the Israeli salad. Not pictured: mimosa, which you can get with grapefruit juice instead of OJ if you like. You will need reservations for sure, though I’ve gotten in a few times going right at 10 a.m. (like I got there at 9:58) and sitting at the bar with only one other person/by myself.
