let these old men live their lives

It was difficult to describe, like- like waking up from a dream, while at the same time, being IN a dream. When reality snaps into focus, but somehow you can remember the large majority of all the things that went on while your subconscious was running wild. How nothing makes sense when you’re awake but when you were dreaming it all made perfect sense.
Never once questioning how he thought he was 43, but he’d been 43 since 1967. How Tang had similarly been 41 for as many years, and Sandy just barely younger than him at 40.
How yes, he had been more than a little furious at Wukong for being distant with MK, but he hadn’t felt like a stranger to him. It’d felt more like he was disappointed in someone he’d known for years rather than just chewing out his kid’s mentor. And yet within days it had become as easy as breathing to fall into a rapport with him, and even easier to fall for him. How for some reason that development had neither diminished his feelings for Tang nor had sent him into a confused spiral because he’d never really had feelings for two different people at the same time. When it happened like that it had felt natural, expected almost. As though the first thing out of his own mouth at the discovery should have been ‘Of course’
And now that all made sense.
Zhu Baije (and wasn’t that a trip to be calling himself again?) Took a breath and leaned against the countertop. For the past day or so Sanzang (No wonder his tongue would trip over an ‘s’ sometimes back then, some part of him remembering still his former master’s name) had been hovering over Xiaotian (which really was such a fitting name for the rascal, how the hell had he never questioned just why the kid had started going exclusively by ‘MK’ one day apropos of nothing?) and fussing over any lingering injuries but looking lighter than Baije could ever remember him looking when he was Pigsy.
A tail curled around his upper arm and Baije startled at the sudden contact. Tensed and ready to be tackled or something, but instead a pair of equally furry arms wrapped around the same arm and he found Sun Wukong (everything about him made sense again) curling up against his side. His own gaze locked onto their baldy (though he had hair now) and their kid (though he looked human still, Baije remembered the Monkey form he’d spent the large majority of his life in) as he leaned heavily into his side.
“Hey there, stranger.” It was probably too soon to joke around like that, but Baije honestly didn’t know what else to say.
There were so many things he COULD say, asking Wukong to confirm things he suspected, be a little salty that after he’d forgotten everything Wukong had essentially left Sanzang to deal alone, apologies for unintentionally rubbing salt in wounds when he didn’t remember-
But deflecting was the only one that felt like something he was capable of right then.
Wukong squeezed his upper arm tighter. There really were so many things that should be addressed, talked through, and eventually settled on.
But-
“You know, I haven’t seen him smile like that in ages.” he nodded in Sanzang’s direction, and it was true, the fond exasperated grin he was directing at Xiaotian had been all but hidden behind whatever coping mechanisms their former master had used to keep his part of the act going for decades.
“Years of protecting him from demons who woulda’ thought Master was the strongest of us all, huh?” Wukong huffed, hot breath against Baije’s exposed neck and made a shiver crawl up his spine.
There was a short pause, and then Wukong shifted, nuzzling into his neck and making his face feel very hot- Wow he really needed to get used to this again, it had only been… what, sixty years? And he was freaking out over boss being touchy? He was always touchy!
“I missed you both so much.” Sun Wukong repeated for what must have been the thousandth time “It’s been a hole in my fucking heart since this whole thing started.”
“You could have come to visit, I’m sure Master woulda’ thought of some sort of alibi for you.”
“I did.” Wukong huffed, and at Baije’s raised brow he chuckled softly. “I was in disguise you dumbass. It was-...” he looked back to Sanzang and Xiaotian. “It was easier to pretend you didn’t know who I was because I wanted you to not know.”
Now that he mentioned it he did recall a few times where Tang was far too comfortable chatting with someone he hadn’t known who in the middle of huge rushes where Pigsy couldn’t spend the time to do much but passively observe them.
Now Baije felt like a bit of an idiot for not ever thinking anything strange about that. It wasn’t his fault, he knew he shouldn’t be blaming himself for having his brain fucked with by ilk like the Lady Bone Demon, but he still felt it.
“You know master’s gonna go wild when he realizes that means that ‘Best Pillow Baije’ is back into play. According to him my fur is too thick so it makes everything unpleasantly hot.”
“You LET him? You hate being used as a pillow...”
“It reminded me of you.”
…. And well, what the hell could he say about that? He supposed it was kinda nice to know, that even though master and older brother had continued on without him, they didn’t decide they were better off without him or anything. They both missed him. That was really nice actually. All that time being worried over being the annoying third wheel that was just kept around out of some vague sense of obligation or attachment.
A short hum was all he could figure to respond with.
Wukong shifted the position of his head until his chin was resting on his shoulder alone and he was staring. Baije peered at him out of the corner of his eye and-
He promptly felt his own face turn blood red at the grin Wukong was gracing him with.
….Dammit. Stupid monkey with his stupid handsome face and his stupid ‘how much i missed you’ grin.
“What? I have something on my face?”
“I just- I love seeing you smile. A real Baije Smile.”
“I’m not smiling.”
“Yes you are, with your eyes. You didn’t really smile with your eyes when you didn’t remember.” He looked away for a second. “Or… You only did for Xiaotian and Xiaojiao. It wasn’t for us anymore.”
“Ugh, are you gonna get tired of this or am I gonna be stuck with 'overly sappy Wukong' for the next while while you get used to having me around again.”
“Until the same amount of time has passed. It’s 2021 now and you lost your memories in 1967 so… I’ll be back to arguments and playful bullying in… 54 years?”
He groaned.
“It’s going to be a long immortality, Baije-” Sanzang called from his spot on the floor, finally deciding to interrupt. “You’re gonna need to get used to it again.”
He scoffed, but when Wukong nuzzled into his shoulder again, he tilted his head a bit to rest on top of his. “Yeah yeah yeah. It’ll be an exhausting time.”
If he was being honest, It would be a wonderful time.
