“Stay awake.” and "I'm late."? I wanna see ur OCsssss-
AH thank you! :) I intended to combine both of them but somehow it just spiraled into the second one alone, so I hope that’s alright!
Anyway, meet Maya and her fairy companion, Ruby!
Maya awoke to the sensation of tiny hands striking her forehead.
Her eyes fluttered open, then instantly contorted in a wince as the sunlight spilling into the room via the window filled her vision. Her deep hazel pupils flitted to the side to pinpoint the source of the hands, even though there was only one person she knew small enough to qualify.
Ruby stared back at her, standing inches away from her head as her stormy gray eyes glimmered with a hint of curiosity. Her short, dark brown hair hung messily around her face, the choppy edges quirked upwards in a hint of a curl. She tilted her head, her strikes ceasing, and spoke.
“You’re late.” There was little emotion in her voice; her words were spoken in a near-monotone, and only the slightest inflection at the end betrayed her curiosity.
“What...” Maya rubbed her eyes vigorously, swiveling her head to stare at the alarm clock perched beside her bed. Her mind was still operating through some sort of misty, sleep-induced haze, and only upon seeing the glowing green blobs before her did she remember to grab the teal glasses folded neatly on her nightstand and jam them onto her face before glancing at the clock again.
“I’m late,” she whispered, hoarse, as if her mind was unable to process this. She lay there, eyes trained on the clock, for about ten seconds before she launched herself off the bed, scampering frantically around the room.
“I’m late!” she groaned again as she hastened to button up her crisp white blouse. “I must’ve slept through my alarm—I knew staying up to look over everything again was a bad idea, but—oh!” Maya huffed, exasperated with herself, as she tugged on a navy blue blazer. Grabbing a brush, she began yanking it through her brown, honey-streaked hair, surveying herself in the mirror as she did so.
“I thought it wise to wake you,” Ruby responded, her tone alone betraying uncertainty. “But it seems you are not happy now.”
“Oh, no—it’s not your fault, Ruby,” Maya mumbled in response, shooting her a grateful glance as she began twisting her hair into a semi-neat bun. “I’m glad you woke me when you did, actually—and speaking of, how’d you know I had the interview this morning?”
“You were speaking about it last night. On the...the...” Ruby’s fingers curled inwards into fists, her gray eyes narrowed as she racked her brain.
“Phone?” Maya supplied, eyebrows raised. Ruby nodded vigorously, her dark hair flying around her face.
“Yes,” she murmured, half to herself. “The phone.”
Before long, Maya had finished getting ready. She stood in front of the mirror, her eyes wide as they flitted over her reflection. Finally, she turned, grabbing her purse as she prepared to leave.
Before she did, however, her eyes found Ruby once more. Setting her purse down, she crossed over to the bed, kneeling beside it so that her eyes were level with Ruby. The fairy regarded her with a troubled look.
“You are late,” she repeated. “You need...you need to hurry.” Her tone had become increasingly more urgent as she spoke.
“I know,” Maya responded. “I’ll...I’ll be fine if I leave in a minute, as long as traffic’s good.” She reached out tentatively, one of her fingers coming to rest atop Ruby’s head.
The dark-haired fairy tensed, then relaxed, her expression softening visibly. “I just wanted to say goodbye,” Maya added, her eyes locked on Ruby’s.
“Oh. I see.” Ruby nodded. “Goodbye, then.”
They remained like that for a moment—Maya’s hand gently cupped around Ruby’s frame, their eyes boring into each other as if searching the respective hazel and gray depths. Then, Maya rose, dusting her skirt off as she moved towards the door.
“I’ll be back this afternoon,” she said, her voice soft as she grabbed her purse.
Ruby did not respond.
Maya flashed her one last smile, her eyes twinkling and her face noticeably redder than it had been moments ago. With that, she swept out the door, leaving Ruby in the empty apartment.
