BECOMES HORIZONTAL, i know there’s no such thing as perfection but i was looking for good watercolor sketchbooks and it’s helllllll maybe i shouldn’t check reviews on am*zon because Everything Can Happen Over There (my favourite etchr lab watercolor sketchbook had one star, included one photo and no text and the title was “THERE WAS A SHRIMP IN THE PACKAGE”) but. sits and suffers

edit: ironically i think i kinda like the way watercolors look in my. talens sketchbook. which is like 140gsm and so Definitely not watercolor paper lmao

#i sat down to test some papers and to my endless surprise i liked canson student the most for a casual sketch #yes arches basically does a smooth wash for you. you don't need to try at all the paint just Does That on this paper #but good luck trying to paint a shape with smooth borders. they're always feathery and i think it's because of the paper texture #i mean yes you can minimize the feathering by being v e r y slow with your brush but like... come On #and i don't want to use hot pressed paper because i LIKE the texture! cmon! i just don't want it to do This #canson is textured as well (although differently) and the borders are nice and smooth but the washes aren't as flat and. well. it's paper #meanwhile w&n... i kind of hated it because the borders were not only feathery as fuck -- the paint sat on top of the paper as if it was #oiled and didn't want to cooperate AT ALL. you'd think my brush was dry as a bone with how the paint behaved on this paper #so like. 'you don't need to spend much money to have fun doing art' does apply! just. not to watercolors #unless you have an irl friend who'll show you around and you only buy what you're 100% sure is Good #and so far i remain sketchbookless. i wanted to try the etchr one but ahhhh i don't know. what if it does the same thing as w&n #shrimp thoughts
