One more thing while I’m back on the Cyrano bs, but I will never be over the interpretive duality of this line (both in how it’s written and delivered) from the Crimp adaptation:

“You’re telling me, you loved me, but you signed his name. His name, Cyrano! How many times?”

#jibber jabber blabber bluff #it's just...it's just a lot #because here's the thing - i always pay attention in this adaptation in how language is used - the thing is literally all about words #so when words are used in the past tense or emphasized in certain ways it packs so much meaning into something so small #and i feel like i *have* to look at it in multiple ways - both simple and not so much #because that's the way it's meant to be looked at - interpretively #we as interpreters are left somewhat confused - we assume yes this comes from roxane's anger over him lying to her #(you claim you love me and yet you went along with all of this and it was your idea on top of it)#but then *also* because this play reframes cyrano through a queer lense #the emphasis on the word 'his' in 'his name' brings pause #because you think...let's parallel 'loved' and 'signed' here #both in past tense #it comes across very much as 'you claim you loved me but are you sure it's *me* you loved'#'because now every time you talk of loving me his name is in your mouth'#'*his* name was on the paper - which is it?'#but also with mcavoy's delivery of 'i was in love with...you [roxane]'#(while on his tirade defending christian's honour and also the past tense 'was') like martin crimp and co i just want to TALK #there's more i wanted to say but my brain is a scrambled egg rn i hope this makes sense
