MOB PSYCHO SEASON 3 SPOILERS
I heard from someone a little while back that teru loses the signature sparkle in his eyes under the broccoli hypnosis. I wondered if this actually managed to carry over to the anime since it wasn't completely consistent in the manga, so I dug through the trailer again, and...
the broccoli background confirms it. it's such a small detail but it really adds a LOT to the uncanniness of this scene so I'm super glad it was recognized. thank you studio bones!! extremely excited for this arc

i am actually obsessed with the fact that this season of mob psycho 100 is not going to have any villains. zero. absolutely no bad guys. mob has a total of two confrontations and one of them is with a friend and the other one is literally with HIMSELF, and both of those are actually really emotional personal stories that just happen to be told in the form of epic shounen showdowns

already screeched about this over discord but i’m obsessed with how, as far as we know, dimple is THE ONLY PERSON who has any idea what shigeo went through in mogamiworld, and then he turns around and tries to use the same intimidation tactics that mogami used to wear shigeo down, telling him he’s completely alone, telling him that if he wasn’t powerful his friends wouldn’t care for him aaaaAAAAAAAAAAA and the worst part is that dimple is totally completely 100% AWARE OF IT he literally SAYS “i remember mogamiworld, i know this kid has weak points” ohhhhh mmmyy ghgGodddd

thoughts:
Oh they cut when Reigen held his shoes in his trembling hands I just KNOW me and the manga girlies are all up in arms about that bit
Okay this isn't a direct cut or anything more up to interpretation when reading but I really did not think that the vortex just straight up stopped the second reigen let out that he wasn't psychic. I had always thought it was more a gradual dissipating, which put a little more tension into the scene and a little more impact into the rest of reigen's words. Like making it clearer they were ALL needed, not just the admission of his lack of powers.
The anime making the line "she still has yet to see me in that way". Get that outta here dog. I don't know if its down to the translation or Bones but either way. Weaker.
Reigen's voice when confessing and crying TEN OUT OF TEN ABSOLUTELY NO NOTES. ough. god. the music too. Got me good. Oh man.
Bones adding Reigen calling Serizawa on the phone after. Serireis getting that W.
Dimple reveal scene dimple my BELOVEDDDD. Him actually being paler. I love him so much. I forgot it was like a five second fakeout too for Reigen having powers lmao. Also them putting the commercial break there, very good also no notes.
Teru's hair having its volume being so coiffed dkfjsdklf Bones said okay lil gayass.
FINAL MONKEY SHIRT DISCUSSION ADDED IN. I dont know if I appreciated teru's little laughing "really?" after Mob says he loves the shirt because that could be used as ammo in the arguments that Teru didn't genuinely pick out the shirt and I will NOT hear that. Teru and Mob BOTH love that shirt I will die on this hill.
Also what was with the cut to Teru almost losing his old wig? What was that about.
Tea sipping Teru wasn't serving 💅 like the manga panel but this was to be expected.
The animation style and voice acting when Ritsu asks if Reigen is gonna cry. He's being a little hater! 😊
Overall NOT as strong of an emotional reaction as Broccoli arc. My expectations really were a little too keyed up 😔. But obviously it was good because its Mob Psycho and obviously there was some tearing up when Reigen confessed. Because that shit does hit. The culmination of Mob's entire character arc and story! It really does hit so good.
The added shot of Dimple scooping cake off Reigen's face :') Did I mention that I love Dimple so much.
I wish Mob's laugh hadn't been part muffled by the music but still. Mob's laugh. :') :') :')

i have come up with extremely detailed episode predictions (as far as how the manga will be distributed among the remaining episodes) for the rest of season 3 of mp100, it's under the cut. manga spoilers, obviously...
E6 - the rest of broccoli arc/chapter 97, picking up where E5 left off and ending on "dimple was a friend." this is 60 pages of the manga.
E7 - aliens/ch 98. I'm positive this will be only 1 episode but it's 113 pages with a lot of dialogue and characters so it will require some streamlining. for one idea, they may remove the first scene with the shiratori brothers and provide the necessary background later in the club room scene.
E8 - ch 99. this chapter is 47 pages and has a lot of dialogue so i'm sure it will be a full episode. also if bones doesn't decide to end an episode with roadkill-mob i'll eat my hat.
going into the ch 100 episodes I'm going to get more detailed in my breakdown and go scene by scene... there are 4 major "battles" that can distribute among the 4 remaining episodes, and we have to save about a third/half of the 12th episode for the epilogue. I am not getting rid of scenes or moving the order of anything however, so this is only if it's a super exact adaption (which I think it MAY be, this feels like a satisfying TV structure to me)
E9 - total of 71 pages per this prediction
???% wakes up and continues on his mission (13 pages) -- wouldn't this be a kickass cold open?
check-in with Reigen and Serizawa, Teru appears (12 pages)
???% vs. Teru (44 pages)
at the end we briefly see Tsubomi still waiting for Mob (2 pages)
E10 - total of 49 pages. I was tempted to end this with Ritsu approaching (not have the Body Improvement Club until E11) but things get tight later if we do that and I think it works emotionally/dramatically to have them at the end of this episode, since we love those good jock boys so much and it sets up Ritsu in 11.

Reigen decides to go it alone, and chases after Mob, and ???% reacts to Reigen ("that person"...) -- I'm not sure what the exact cut off should be. It could be as soon as he decides to leave Serizawa and go it alone (pg 163) or it could be after "I DIDN'T KNOW" when Reigen starts chasing after him in earnest and gets wrecked. If we go with that, it's (15 pages) -- plus a wildcard honorable mention to ending a few pages later when reigen takes off his shoes and accepts his death (this might require some repeat footage at the start of E12 to build up to the "i've been secretly training my muscles" moment)
E12 - total of 53 pages
Reigen catches up to Mob and we get Dimple!Reigen, the event of the century (18 pages)
the big Confession, and Mob goes to Tsubomi (20 pages)

(maybe not so) quick notice about shit-all
essentially, i'm going to do the rewrite that i've been stopping myself from doing for over three years.
"oh no it'll never get done, it'll stop me from actually writing new material, the chapters are already published and you can't edit published material" - fuck all that noise. i've actually been held back from writing new material because i've had to devote so much brain power to stop myself from thinking about all the tweaks i'd like to do to solve the problems that are stopping me from writing rn.
and, writing tip, when you get stuck, the problem is often way farther back than you think it might be. for me, it's mainly chapter 22, "sweet things", because the whole emotional logic and everything collapses and breaks there. so i'll need to edit/rewrite at least chapter 22 anyway, so might as well work on the rest too, right?
a couple key points (spoilers start to drop)
i started writing shit-all when the broccoli arc was not even halfway done, iirc.
i had already built dimple as a key player in the fic so at the time i just called it an au and a day
i absolutely detest writing for ongoing series and never have done it before mp100
the reason for 3 is because once again the canon concluded into a beautiful whole that actually serves some delicious bits that would make the fic stronger and i 100% would have incorporated them into the fic IF I HAD ONLY KNOWN ABOUT THEM BEFORE
i also wish i had realized that no actually, the end of mp100 has a pretty clear timeline
separation arc is around reigen's birthday, 10/10. the culture festival is most likely on november 3th on culture day. the memories in ch 98 are made on new year's eve/morning, but at the start of it winter holidays (dec 25 to jan 7) are starting "soon" and it's stated to be a little over a month since dimple disappeared.
so broccoli arc happened mid to late november.
AS YOU KNOW THERE'S MULTIPLE CHAPTERS OF SHIT-ALL THAT HAPPEN ON CHRISTMAS EVE FAIRLY EARLY ON
the entire focus on christmas was purely a bit i committed to way hard and couldn't back out. i'm not that big on christmas. i just wanted to enjoy how it's more of a romantic couple's holiday in japan than the family holiday in my culture.
the christmas chapters end on ch 12
the best spot with the LEAST adjustments needed for the maximum impact for dimple to beef it is between chapters 15 and 16 and even that necessitates an awkwardly long jump in time during a very tumultuous time in the fic to make the rest of the timeline work too (because the final arc happens in january, because tsubomi moving is one of the announcements the teacher does as they've returend from the winter break, and she's stated to be moving "within the month", and that all happens in ch 21)
the lucky part is that this gives me an excuse to edit out the christmas stuff. or not even edit it out, but to move especially some of the feelsy headcanons for reigen to strenghten some later chapters instead (for example, to bring some oomph to the end of ch 19). chapter 18 would get the biggest hit, but i also could lift the haunted house scene and drop it right into ch 22, and it would practically fix all my problems with that chapter.
i've... honestly already mapped out all this in a spreadsheet. it is a fucking nightmare of 100K to rewrite, but also i already tested out rewriting the first scene of the first chapter, and it's pretty damn fast and easy work. i know that by ch 5 i'll have to start straightening up the timeline, and the fic will lose some of its wintery charm (which already was me projecting the long winters i experience onto a place that has different shit going on), but it feels pretty manageable. again, it's not like i'm making any forward progress anyway without doing this, and when i'm working on my own projects, i have in the past just started again from the beginning when i've gotten stuck at 50K or whatever.
the question remains, how do i want to do this? currenlty i'm thinking about starting out posting the chapters as i finish them (while also redrawing some old art too maybe) until the changes in actual content got too jarring. like, probably would do the christmas chapters as one batch etc.
i probably will just edit the descriptions etc over on ao3 to inform people there about what's going on, until hopefully i'll finally get to post ch 25 and there'll be a giant author's note about holy shit please take this chance to reread the work a lot changed
... honestly, best case scenario, it'll be a fun rereading opportunity on all fronts fhgsdhdfsh

i’m rewatching mp100 because of the season 3 announcement and first of all. anime of all time if you’ve never seen it you should watch it. second of all i remember being shocked on my first watch that ritsu had such bitter resentment and fear of shigeo, because from the audience perspective shigeo is clearly a little sweetheart who only lashed out at another human being after literally being choked into unconsciousness. but now i do feel like it makes sense and is reflective of how it can feel for really young kids to have loved ones who are neurodivergent—not because neurodivergent people are actually more dangerous but because they can seem unpredictable. they might not telegraph their intentions with the usual cues, they might melt down (hit 100%) over seemingly minor things that other people would not expect to set them off… it doesn’t seem like shigeo was ever an actual danger to ritsu, but ritsu specifically says he saw the ??? as separate individual entirely—a powerful entity with unpredictable intentions capable of beating the shit out of bullies (“that wasn’t my brother”) so it makes sense he would feel threatened by it. of course as we find out in the broccoli arc, ??? is not some sinister otherworldly being at all. but that would be spoilers. anyways i don’t think ritsu really meant all the harsh things he said in the moment but there’s a kernel of truth to them
