So someone on the shining nikki subreddit made a post about this game called Life Makeover that s in early access, and i downloaded it and fucked around with it for like, and hour- and man i still got stuff to do in it. Ahead you have a bunch of rambling about it, maybe it d interest you too.

Tldr, its a super polished and pretty game with a story that seems to be getting interesting but i cant say for sure yet, pretty and diverse clothes, shit ton of customisation, and it sems generous so far.

Anyway it s very pretty, customisation is fucking insane, if i understand things right we re gettin a shit ton of free high rarity suits just for doin stuff in the game? Though i am a bit confused of if we re gettin em for Free or for doin stuff akin to the diamond arena.

Here s an outfit i made, but it s got a bunch of styles. Luckily its not just modern clothing, it s got the high fashion/alt stuff too. And it s real well made.

I wasn t exactly playin w takin screenshots in mind so i don t have many.

Ima make a list of stuff about it:

• seems to be generous with its currency? I got 3k diamonds rn and one 10 pull is like 1180 or somethin.

• it has pavilions like nikki does, but i don t think most of its events are gacha based? Idk the thing just started so we waitin. The rate for the coin pavilion is kinda bad, but for the other ones is as good as nikkis.

• you can dye. Everything. It s not Free to dye, u gotta pay w this dyeing currency, but u get a bunch of it. And there s many options too.

• the story is... funky. Seems boring at the beginning but uh, spoilers ig? I ll put it under the cut if ur interested

• many skin options 🙏

• as i said, customisation. U can change the face shape, makeup, body, kinda everythin about your girl at the beginning of the game. ("Body" u know the usual thin- slightly larger but still thin body slider in games? Yeah.) My girl looks kinda like a baby cuz i made her like that, u can choos ebetween "girl" and "female" i think they called it? And it s just, one is more mature lookin than the other. U can change the height too.

• every character besides yourself is fully voice acted in english and chinese.

• every character also has live 2d models for the story portions of the game. Very well made stuff.

• there are cards, like reflections. Sr and ssr cards are live 2d animated.

• some "investigation" segments actually have small 3d environments u explore instead of 2d backgrounds.

• some of the 2d backgrounds have animated elements which is pretty cool.

• there s a housing feature. You buy yourself a house and you can customise it to your heart s content. AND you walk around in it with your character. I didn t fuck around in it too long cuz i wantes to get back to the story, but it seems really in depth and well made? Kinda insane tbh.

• has a guild feature like nikki s.

• actually, if u play shining nikki, u gonna acclimate to life makeover real quick. Guilds, main story, clothes crafting, what looks to be a diamond arena thing for styling competitions.

• your character is shown in cutscenes and 2d art sometimes, which means that canonically, you are 1. White 2. Have black hair (also are a girl). Your name is what you picked tho.

• the world we are in seems to be super high tech. "Makes a 3d model of the item u took a pic of so you can investigate it without touching it" type of high tech. "Extremely advanced AI" type. U know what i mean.

• oh also u got some background already there, n the lighting changes based on what u pick. I kinda prefer nikki's "choose ur own lighting" system tho.

She didn t actually die, she just got attacked, which is the second attack so far. (I really hope one of em dies at some point tbhhh)

The story goes, you re on a private island with your sisters' rich idol friends, who are a really really popular idol group which is why they got all this money, and this. Guy? Who is also ur sisters friend, Idk he s v boring fancy rich dude typa vibe idc much. Ur here as a graduation gift whatever.

The idols are gettin "haters"-

(They keep callin em that its so fuckin funny. They shoulda said trolls it d be even better)

- that are on their private island? And they re doin more than Hatin, i think they legit tryin to kill these girls. Locked one of em in a freezer, knocked another one over the head and stuffed her in a teddy bear, u saw what happened to annie, that shit.

So yeah it s gettin interestin 👀 i m on ch 3 i think, so i ll see where it goes from here.

favorite thing about them

first of all: the fact that Green canonically has a rivals to best friends arc with Red fills me with so much joy and YES they are on their alolan honeymoon you cannot convince me otherwise

okay like. gen 1 Green just perfectly encompasses what it’s like to be a ten year old in a way? like ofc he’s written like a kid bc he is a kid, but i feel like the writing on him just feels so genuine as compared to some of the other 10 yr old rivals you get in other regions. even though he’s kinda a brat at the start, he kinda eases up a bit as you go along your journey and starts giving you progressively nicer/more praise-y end lines when you beat him (going from “i picked the wrong pokémon!” to “so, you are ready for boss rocket!”) but still retains this childlike rivalry and competitiveness and i love that about him

and like. fucking beating him at the Indigo League still completely breaks my heart because even after he did become the champion at age 10 the first thing that happens is you beat him and Prof Oak just yells at him for being bad at things and like. ow.

this is why i headcanon that Red actually took awhile longer to get to Green like please. please give my boy a chance to be happy and proud

also Red was caught up with Team Rocket anyway so i imagine he must’ve fallen a little behind at some point? anyway

the development on him across regions is so choice!!! he’s so much more mellow and even kinda melancholic when you find him in gsc/hgss, like he’s calmed down over a few years and he obviously misses Red so much but like, it’s clear that Red is kinda the reason Green does settle down and he seems to have worked on his character and become a nicer person - and he still has that sassy flair to him! he’s just got that gradual slope from asshole rival to kinda aloof gym leader to friendly/sassy battle legend and aaaaa i love my boy so MUCH

also huge point: he’s so fucking driven??? he’s got the most drive and the most passion for battles/pokémon in general out of all the rivals i feel. he’s only closely matched by Silver, but Silver seems to be more aggressive than passionate, and somewhat out of necessity too (like, Giovanni abandoned him what was he to do), whereas Green just really like. he genuinely just cares so much about battles and about pokémon in general! he literally calls you in hgss and just rants about how many different kinds of pokémon there are in the world!!!

also in Alola he’s like???? just so sweet?????? he congratulates you and is like hey you’re really strong lets battle like!!!!!!!!! supportive boy!!!!! he has come so far over so many generations and i cry

also on Four Island when you play frlg he legitimately says “Be smelling ya!” when he leaves and how do you not love this idiot

least favorite thing about them

i mean. while i get that you beat Green right after he becomes the champion in the kanto games i feel like there should’ve been more pomp and circumstance for him and i’ll never forgive gamefreak for giving this boy his dream, then making you rip it away from him, and then watching his own gramps yell at him for fucking up like. again it’s that drive, i get why Red keeps such good pace w Green but i just feel like he worked so hard and he deserved so much better than that

also while i’m very biased towards him bc Big Emotions, i feel like if i knew this boy irl who was constantly i’m so great and you’re a loser i would probably punch him eventually lmao. in theory it’s kinda endearing but as a real person that’d be grating

on one hand, “smell ya later” is so fucking iconic, but on the other -

for long elaborate headcanon reasons, i see him as being a good brotp with Kris - i headcanon her as also being really driven the way Green is, but more quiet about it, she’s kinda a good balance to him and they probably do pokemon research together. i also feel like she kept him sane while Red was still missing/before they found him on a fuckin mountain

do i really need to tell you that i’m 100% namelessshipping

like they perfectly balance each other. Green has all this energy and all this spunk and Red is just like… so opposite of him y'know? he’s quiet and he’s more measured in his behavior i feel, he doesn’t really rush into things as much, and yet they both really just took Kanto by storm when they were kids, and i like how they have this foil dynamic and are both still so successful? they’re so different and they complement each other in that way, and they both find success in their own ways

like one of the reasons i hate that Green’s championship gets undersold so much is that he did beat you to the punch, and he has been one step ahead of you, and there’s so much passion there and it’s so loud - and yet you as Red are just as driven, you take down Team Rocket, you’re always right on his tail, so close but not quite there, you’re the only one who can keep up with him and you’re the only one he cares enough about to slow down for

so like. idk with even all my headcanons about namelessshipping aside (and i can infodump those another day lol), i feel like the in-game representation of them just works. they just work so well together, they balance each other without ever holding each other back, and there’s something really beautiful about that in a relationship y'know

while Red is still living on Mount Silver, Green is not coping well with having him so far away, and so Green massively overworks himself to the point that he keeps just not being in his gym sometimes bc he’s bouncing between the gym, training multiple teams, pokémon research, and ofc going to visit Red whenever he can. this leads him to be kinda temperamental after he’s been working on 2 hours of sleep a day for like a week until he just has an emotional meltdown and crashes, and then he gets right back into it because he has no self preservation

…….. nicer headcanon; Red can only cook two (2) foods, so Green cooks all the food for them when they move in together. he has attempted to teach Red how to cook, but Red pretends not to understand so Green will keep making him food. Green knows Red is faking it and doesn’t call him out bc he thinks it’s cute

unpopular opinion

look i’ve played through classic red version a few times and when i say he wasn’t that much of a jerk, i do genuinely mean he was not that much of a jerk. he’s like ten. ten year olds are just Like That. i guess this isn’t too unpopular anymore but it was Back In The Day and in some parts of the fandom he’s still seen as a jerk and like Bro He Is Ten In RGB/FRLG cut him some slack

also genuinely unpopular - Green is taller than Red. i know namelessshipping has fallen into the bara Red and twink Green trope but i refuse to let go of tall Green/short Red fuckin fight me why dont you

a lot of the Pray For The Wicked album by Panic! at the Disco gives me Green vibes, more for the sound than for lyrics necessarily, but for some reason Roaring 20s just like. has the sound of Green to me. it’s somewhere between flamboyant pride and underlying insecurity that i think really encapsulates Green (or at least his subtext)

favorite thing about them

by now i guess you know im a sucker for character development, but i think they did a really good job with her!! i feel like her turn is a bit more in moments than it is with Green, who gradually evolves (lol) over the course of Kanto/all the gens overall. you see more discrete moments where Lillie starts to shift and gain confidence in herself and i am so proud of her ???? like the way she gets excited when she sees Olivia doin’ her z-move stuff, she starts buying her own clothes and getting ahead of you, etc etc

and like, she still has moments where she’s scared, there’s still some fundamental Lillie in there yknow? you don’t lose any of that softness that characterizes Lillie, she just like… she gets better, she develops without losing her Lillie vibe and i love that abt her. she overcomes a lot of the shit she had to deal with when she was stuck with Lusamine, she stands up to Lusamine eventually, and ghfdkjsg gah she’s a sweet gorl i love and appreciate her

also like. the writing on her backstory is so subtle in-universe. like yeah she literally looks like Lusamine’s daughter and you see her in the opening cutscene leaving Aether, but as the protagonist - like as Selene lets say, there’s little hints about where Lillie came from, and if you suspend your disbelief and put yourself in the pc’s shoes, there’s subtly to her character arc that i like

also like. when she changes her outfit and starts being more protagonist-y, like more confident and kinda bubbly instead of shy??? love that shit it’s so cute can i have custody of this child pls

least favorite thing about them

i like. sometimes feel like she’s too soft of a character for me to really get into? like i love her and Hau, they’re sweet good friends, but i tend to personally gravitate towards characters that create a little more tension (ie Green and N)

(though on that note, Hau can be kinda savage. he just calls Faba out and sarcastically calls Gladion “a ray of sunshine” at some point i think?? Lillie is just very tender and i will support her forever, but i think that also makes her almost too soft to keep me fixated on her yknow. it’s not even a flaw in her character but just not something i fawn over as much)

favorite line

“I’m so glad I got to meet everyone. I’m so glad I got to meet you.”

like that ending kills me but that line almost feels like. I Feel That So Much like i feel so happy to have met all these new characters and to have played these games, and i feel like some of the player’s energy and enjoyment of the game is channeled into this last line of hers

Jump-scare a Thrall?

“So, y’re just playin’ a sim tonight?” Rictus rested his chin atop Tango Zulu’s mess of bristles as he wrapped his long arms across the other’s stomach.

The mouse clicked as TZ continued setting up the archaic program. He sighed. “Yeah, kind of? Someone suggested I try doing “Let’s Plays” so I thought I’d show off my bravery by facing “Five Nights at Foxtrot’s”.“ He chuckled at the thought of facing the assorted animatronic clones in animal costumes being anything but ridiculous. “It’s supposed to be really spooky. There’s no camera this time, so you can watch if you want?”

“Spooky eh?” Rictus’s eyes followed the little arrow dash across the screen. Lifting his stripes to show the tendril tips at the edges of the monitor, he hummed, “I’m much scarier than any sim, mate.”

TZ wrapped one of the tendrils around one of his scar-splashed fingers, careful with his trimmed, but still sharp nail. The freezing smoothness of the tentacle slipped easily between his digits. His hand free, he double-clicked on the brand-new icon and the screen went dark. “Of course, you’re the scariest grumpy thrall who loves his birds too much.”

Rictus chortled as he pulled his tendrils back under his skin to swirl into his stripes. A toothy bear stared back to them from TZ’s screen, a low thrum escaped the speakers. The clone selected “New Game” and the screen flickered to a control room. A phone rings but TZ clicked another button to skip the cutscene. Instead he opted to press the bright red buttons on either side of the screen to close and open the doors; turn lights on and off; and flip up a menu from the bottom of the screen to show security cameras staring at a stage occupied by three robotic animals, including the bear. The battery icon ticked down to 99%.

“Why’s there a computer in the computer?” Rictus asked as he let out a whistling huff through his nose.

“So I can watch the robots so I know when they’re coming to attack me.”

The screen flicked back to the stage as TZ brought the menu up; the bear was looking at the camera now. Rictus’ indigo plates rattled as a shiver crawled up his spine. They seemed to have been turned off, but the beady light in its eyes reminded him of the Stareaters. His grip across TZ’s shoulders tightened as tentacles slithered from their skin-deep prison to grasp the clone a little more. “So, what’s goin’ on wit’ the bear?”

“I think he’s turned off?” TZ glanced up to the underside of Rictus’ chin with his third. With his left hand he tapped his clipped claw to the purple surface. “But, he’s supposed to walk around to try and get me.”

“Get you?” Despite the affectionate poke to his chin, Rictus’s eyes narrowed in suspicion as the monitor flicked back to the stage. The bear was gone.

The encroaching chill of the tendrils curling around his shoulders soaked through his shirt to tickle at his skin. TZ chuckled again, finding it cute. “Yeah. He’s gonna come out and bite me. It’ll be cool.”

The battery in the corner read at 50%.

“I don’t want him to bite you.” Rictus took his eyes off of the screen to stare off at the rest of the dark room.

“It’s all right, I’m protected, see?” TZ toggled the left door open and shut as a demonstration. Leaving it shut, he flipped through the cameras again. The bear was still no where to be found.

When Rictus looked back, the number had dropped down to 25%. “What’s the battery for then?”

“The camera monitor, probably.” TZ shrugged. “Maybe the lights too.” He clicked on the button to light up a hallway outside the door. The number fell to 24%. “See?”

Rictus rested more of his scant weight on the clone, a low, worried grumble in his throat. “I guess. Still don’t like it though.”

Closing his third eye and tilting his head from the extra rumble from the Thrall's rumbling, TZ couldn't help the smirk across his face. "I'll just keep the doors closed. It'll keep them out and I'll be safe. See?” The lavender glow from the underside of the Void-touched one’s horns brightened as there was a clawing screech against the the metal door. “Perfectly safe.”

5%. “I guess. ‘T’s not like the doors’ould open if the power goes out...” Rictus hummed as he pulled his tendrils back under his skin. “That’d be dumb.”

“Right? This game’s too easy.” TZ sat back in his chair, the best he could with Rictus still hanging over him. 3% “I was told it was going to be scary... guess they were scared of you.”

“But aren’t sims supposed to... uh... challenge you or somethin’?” He huffed as he opened a clawed hand. 2%. “I’d think that there’d be somethin’ there to keep you from doin’ exactly this...” 1%.

Before TZ could say anything, the screen fell dark and they could both hear the metal doors clank open. Despite clicking each of the buttons one after the other, nothing would turn on or move. Then the music started; the tinny notes of a music box playing some ancient tune sent fresh quivers across Rictus’s long plates. Beady eyes and sharp teeth shone from the darkened doorway.

A harsh growl escaped through too-long fangs and several inky tentacles wrapped around TZ as the song ended. Silence fell through the machine’s speakers as the screen went dark. Only mixture of soft illuminations from both being’s eyes and the gentle, tiny sparkles that seemed to hover around the Void-touched one cut through the darkness. A serene moment that let the tension melt ever so slightly...

SCRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Before TZ could do anything he found himself hanging two feet above ground and a few feet behind Rictus as he hissed at the Foxtrot bear behind the game over screen. Wiggling in his physically impossible bonds, all the clone could do was giggle.

With his heart in his throat and his body low ready to pounce, the laughter over his shoulder broke Rictus from his snarling trance. He slowly glanced over his shoulder at the crazy, chuckling clone before realizing that he might’ve over-reacted. Still, he was unable to catch his racing, whistling breath. “Wot?”

“It’s a sim, Ricky. Remember?”

Rictus glowered back at the screen, before lowering TZ to the ground and peeling back his grip from him. “Right... a sim...” He could not hide the embarrassed side-glance or the flush of pink across his white face. “‘T’s not real...”

“Yeah!” Then it clicked for TZ, Rictus might not have been familiar with these old sims... All three eyes went wide as he assured, “yeah, it’s not real. We’re fine. See?” He flashed a wide smile and gave two thumbs up. “Everything’s good, bro.”

Despite crossing his arms in an effort to show that he was above the “spooky” game, Rictus still shivered where he stood on the spot. “... don’t think I much like these sims.”

“That’s okay...” The clone grabbed one of the Thrall’s arm and tried to pry them open. “That one wasn’t very fun anyways... I could show you a different one that’s not spooky?”

A confused huff chirped through his throat as TZ tugged on his arm. “Uhh, yeah. Maybe?” Rictus relented as he held still to not accidentally hit him with his sharp horns. Muscular arms wrapped around his waist and held him tight as he felt the weight of the clone’s head on his shoulders. Unsure what else to do, he just stood there and purred with a squeaky note escaping his nostrils. “Sure?”

“Yeah, of course.” TZ beamed hearing the strange, but too adorable sound from the Thrall’s chest, but still held him close. Rictus’s plates still rattled from the startle. “That way you’re the spookiest one. Not some silly, fake bear.”

Rictus peeked back at the screen which had turned off in the mean time. He cautiously smirked. “That’s right... ‘sides, I’m real and he isn’t.”

“Exactly! And I think I have one all about birds that you could play.” He took a step towards the computer chair to guide the spindly Thrall to it. Realizing the chair’s back would get in the way of Rictus’ plates, he opted to drag Rictus to the couch to let him sit on the end of it instead. The desk scrapped against the floor as TZ dragged it over in front of him and set up the aforementioned game. It might have been deemed “for children,” but TZ figured it would be best for a spooked Thrall. “This one uses pictures and talks to you too, so there’s not that much reading.”

Again, Rictus felt the weight of the Clone’s body against his and an arm wrapped around his back between his shorter plates. The screen turned pink with flowers and birds and cheery music played, a far-cry from the previous, creepy title screen.

Maybe, he had overreacted. Sims might not be that bad?
