Hoyo La Amistad Gold by AJ Fernandez
Rothschild  (4.5" x 50)
Offers a rich Cuban-esque flavors
Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled in Bond
Quintessential flavors of vanilla, caramel, and aged oak come forward. A trace of leather along with even fainter hints of tobacco and honey play in the background. It’s a little light considering the proof, but well balanced and pleasant overall.

The funniest option in regard to music tastes before the war, in my opinion, is that by then the American public had circled back to the tunes of their great grandparents for a solid dose of nostalgia. This would then mean that contemporary (to us) music was to them like, the driest crap imaginable and listened to solely by old farts or music aficionados. This is a long winded way for me to say that I’m currently imagining Cooper Howard having an existential crisis whilst laying flat on a shag carpeted floor, tumbler of bourbon in hand, and in the background you can hear The Killers at high volume.

OKAY I missed a headcanuary I wanted to do, so here it is, better late than never! 18: Drink.
Jedi-era Dooku is a wine/liquor guy. He doesn’t drink all the time, but when he does, he’s actually taking a break and he wants it to be nice. He’s huge, so he’s used to having the tolerance of a horse. Combining a drink with lightsaber practice? Why not? Sounds relaxing!
Rael Averross is a beer drinker and dive bar aficionado. He genuinely loves Space Fireball and shots of Jager. He also has the dubious honor of being the only person who has comfortably drank Dooku under the fucking table, just to see if he could. (Sifo-Dyas had to carry all 6’5 of him to bed. Dooku is actually a sweet drunk without his typical high strung inhibitions, but this is a secret.)
Jocasta Nu drinks occasionally, and when she does, she favors brown liquor, bourbon or scotch in a nice cut-crystal glass, neat. She actually has perfected the technique of filtering alcohol from one's bloodstream using the Force, something both Dooku and Rael think they can do, but aren’t actually that good at.
Sifo-Dyas doesn’t drink, except to occasionally try a sip of Dooku’s cocktail if it looks interesting, like if it’s glowing or smoking or something. Alcohol makes his visions weird, and it interacts with his antidepressants. For all of this, Sifo-Dyas spends more time in the Coruscant club scene than any of the gang, and let me tell you, he does great for himself.
I know “Qui-Gon is a huge pothead/margaritaville” is a common fandom trope, but I go the opposite: Qui-Gon is really straight edge about any type of intoxicant - why would he purposefully DULL his connection to the Force?! Aghast!

The World’s Best Scotch Whisky—According To The 2023 Singapore World Spirits Competition

The Singapore World Spirits Competition has only been in existence since 2019. But in that short sum of time, it has grown into one of the most important annual judgings in all of Asia. A big reason why it attained so much stature so rapidly is because it’s run by the Tasting Alliance. These are the same folks responsible for the San Francisco World Spirits Competition—which is regarded by many in the industry as the gold standard of booze contests.
This year saw thousands of entries roll in across all major categories of adult beverage. Several weeks ago we were here talking about the best bourbon winner. It was an eyebrow-raiser, to say the least; a brand that didn’t enjoy widespread recognition, even amongst ardent aficionados of American whiskey. That all changed after the announcement of the accolade, underscoring just how valuable these contests can be for brands.
Today we’re taking a look at the top-ranked scotch from the Singapore Worlds Spirits Competition. And it’s bound to generate its own fair share of rancor. The honor belongs to The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky.
Why is this a controversial pick? Well, most notably it’s a blend. That means it includes a combination of malt and grain whiskies plucked from across the Scottish landscape. The conventional wisdom of the day holds that blended scotches are somehow inferior to their single malt counterparts.
If you don’t know the difference between the two categories, don’t kick yourself. It’s relativelystraightforward: single malt is whisky distilled from malted barley—and only malted barley—in a pot still at a single distillery. Blends, by contrast, can combine any number of single malts, often times collected from dozens of distilleries, and then married against a lion’s share of grain whisky.
And there lies the rub, in that last bit. Grain whiskies can come from a number of different ingredients—chiefly corn (but sometimes wheat and rye and other cereals). They are distilled in large column stills, which results in a markedly lighter flavor profile. Some deride this liquid as merely scotch-flavored vodka. Being that this component often makes up the majority of the booze in any blend, it’s a short jump to blended scotch being lesser then.
But here’s a not-so-little secret: blends can be beautiful. They are often times more accessible and “easy-drinking.” Hence why they are far and away the most popular style of scotch on the planet. And when rendered properly, they can serve up a kaleidoscopic array of tastes which is difficult to achieve when you’re only working with malt sourced from a single distillery.
And that brings us back to The Sassenach. This marmalade-hued hooch is undeniably complex. It holds a bouquet reminiscent of the sweet shop: marzipan, candied orange peel and ginger. Upon the palate is a smattering of heather, ripened stone fruit, and dried apricot. It fades after the sip in a subdued sweetness—butterscotch and nutmeg are both apparent. Overall, the 92-proof scotch leaves you with little resistance but plenty to contemplate.
For anyone who remains dismissive of the blended style, this bottle stands as a testament to the follies of your preconceived notions. Although it does so at a relatively hefty price: it typically retails at around $125 per 750ml.
The Sassenach is also a celebrity spirit. It was launched by Scottish actor Sam Heughan, back in 2020. That revelation will inevitably be met with a degree of blowback from a certain subset of drinks enthusiasts. But it’s not really a discussion worth engaging in, because either a whisky is good or it isn’t. And the Singapore World Spirits Competition makes it plainly clear in which camp this one belongs. And that brings us back to The Sassenach. This marmalade-hued hooch is undeniably complex. The Best Japanese Whiskey Buying Guide
True Japanese whiskies value subtle taste distinctions above everything else. The origins of the water and the kind of wood used in the barrels, both have an impact on the final product’s flavor. Some Japanese distilleries employ exotic wood that can’t be obtained anywhere else, giving their spirits a unique taste that can’t be replicated in the United States.
Tumblr media
1. The Chita Single Grain Japanese Whisky
From the House of Suntory Whisky, a mild, smooth single-grain whisky with unparalleled sophistication and a clean, clear finish.
Type: Single Malt Whisky
Size: 700mL
24.0 standard drinks
Alcohol Volume: 43.0%
Country: Japan
Brand Name: The Chita
Closure: Twist Top
2. Yamazaki Distillery Reserve Single Malt Whisky
Known as “the pioneer of Japanese whisky,” Yamazaki® is Japan’s first and oldest distillery. Yamazaki, the birthplace of Japanese whisky and Suntory’s flagship single malt, was founded in 1923 on the outskirts of Kyoto in a unique, misty region where water and mountains offer diversity in nature and temperature and where conditions are ideal for ageing whisky.
Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve is the introduction to the brand. Respecting Yamazaki’s heritage and signature taste, we combine aged Yamazaki sherry cask and aged Mizunara cask malt whiskies to create Distiller’s Reserve, a rich, easy-to-drink whisky with a round-bodied, profound, and mature taste that is always luxurious, exclusive, knowledgeable, but never pretentious.
3. Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky
The Coffey Still is the world’s first patented continuous still, invented by Mr. Aeneas Coffey in 1830. Masataka Taketsuru valued the feature of this type of stew, which retains the flavours of the ingredients and also creates a distinctive texture. The complex, sweet, and mellow flavours in Nikka Coffee invite you back to the beauties of grain whisky.
Type: Japanese Whisky
Size: 700mL
24.9 standard drinks
Alcohol Volume: 45%
Country: Japan
Brand Name: Nikka
Closure: Screw Cap
4. Hibiki Japanese Harmony
An exclusive limited edition of Hibiki Japanese Harmony featuring hints of Yamazaki Sherry Cask
Hibiki Whisky is a harmonious blend of numerous malt and grain whiskies that have been painstakingly blended to create a full orchestra of flavours and aromas.Seductive, blossoming, and enigmatic, Hibiki Whisky celebrates an unrivalled art of blending, fine craftsmanship, and a sense of luxury from the House of Suntory.
5. White Oak Akashi Japanese Single Malt Whisky
Akashi White OakSingle-malt Bourbon Whisky has been aged in bourbon barrels for 5 years.White Oak Distillery outside the city of Akashi is Japan’s oldest, having held its distilling licence since 1919. Unlike Yamazaki, which started production swiftly after attaining its licence in 1923, White Oak waited 80 years to put its first spirit into a cask. With their primary focus being the more traditional Japanese alcohols of sake and shochu, White Oak produces a small amount of whisky, a drop in the ocean compared to the giants Suntory and Nikka.
6. Suntory Toki Blended Japanese Whisky
Toki means time in Japanese. A vivid blend of whiskies from Suntory’s Hakushu, Yamazaki, and Chita distilleries, Suntory Whisky Toki features the quintessential characteristics of a Suntory Whisky blend: exquisite balance, harmony, and oneness. At the same time, its unique pairing of Hakushu® American white oak cask malt whisky with Chita heavy-type grain whisky overturns the traditional hierarchy between malt and grain.
While Japanese whiskey may be the best in the world, it’s not the only type of whiskey that’s worth trying. Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey, and American whiskey all have their own unique flavors and qualities that make them worth seeking out. So, whether you’re a whiskey aficionado or a newcomer to the world of whiskey, be sure to give Japanese whiskey a try atBoozehouse

Jazz on a Summer’s Day
JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY
They say that 1959 was the year that changed jazz. It was the period when the music broke away from its traditional modes to create new forms, specifically allowing soloists to break free and express themselves. It was year that America: the found its groove with jazz leading the charge. The list of albums that were released that year is just incredible - check them out.
However when scholars and aficionados talk about music in that year four jazz albums are cited, each a high point for the artists concerned and a real soundtrack of the times and all four stand up to this day and somewhat. They are:
Miles Davis, Kind of Blue
Dave Brubeck, Time Out
Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um
Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come
All four may be different but they are equally sublime. They are timeless and to have heard them contemporaneously must have been something else. The albums, jazz and that period of time has established itself as an integral part of American history and it quickly found itself an audience and voice in the jazz clubs, nightclubs and parties on this side of the Atlantic as well. Jazz - especially Trad Jazz - was huge in the UK at the end of the 1950s and the aficionados, beatniks and modernists quickly lapped up this modern jazz creating friction - that led to numerous verbals and fist fights between the Trads and Moderns. For this was modern and new. Frightening, exciting, exhilarating and refreshing.
Like the music the shift was rapid and the records soon found their way into the stores the length and breadth of the country. The kids snapped them up, played them, danced to them and nodded their heads to them. And whilst ding this they studied the album covers of all these new imported sounds on the Verve, Blue Note and Capitol labels. See, it was more than the music. It was also about the style, the clothes, the colours, the modernist art, architecture and furniture, and the graphic design. It was Hollywood PLUS! Britain was looking west. Cigarettes, glamour, bourbon, Ivy League clothing and jazz. As the legendary retailer and original modernist John Simons says on his company's website: "I came to art really through record covers, I was extremely interested in the Bebop revolution in America in the post-war years. I would always find myself in record stores looking at the covers. They were very often done by interesting modern artists, which reflected the music. As a fourteen and fifteen-year-old that drew me to it. To me the Bebop revolution made the Punk revolution look like right wing conservatives! So far out man… I can’t even tell you."
Then in August 1959 a small independent film was released that gave the UK modernists a visual interpretation of their new-found music. Entitled Jazz On A Summer's Day the film is a dazzling documentary of the Newport Jazz Festival held a year earlier on Rhode Island, USA. The festival was founded in 1954 and soon became the hippest event in the country. It wasn't long before Bert Stern, a young New Yorker specialising in "still" advertising photography, had the bright idea of filming the Newport Jazz Festival, in which 50 top-flight American jazz musicians and vocalists took part and to which jazzanistas in their legions flocked from all over. Stern has a wonderful gift for capturing the colour, style and panache of the venue, artistes and audience. He then intersperses this with film of the city of Newport from the harbour with its racing yachts skimming gracefully over the sparkling and shimmering water to shots of kids paying on the beach and onto the cool cats arriving at the event. And “cool” is the word.
The music featuring the Jimmy Giuffre 3, Thelonious Monk Trio, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson to name just a few is scintillating. The multi-racial crowd has never been hipper and as day turns to night Stern and co-director Aram Avakian capture a vibe that is like nothing anybody had seen, heard or felt before in America or at one of the few cinemas that showed it in the UK. The reviews were superb, those that saw it had now bought into this whole new scene and Britain edged that little bit closer to the 1960s...
 FOOTNOTES
In 2020 the film was given a new 4K restoration by IndieCollect, and premiered at the 57th New York Film Festival - the trailer looks fantastic . It was meant to have a cinema and Netflix release but due to Covid this doesn't seem to have happened. You can however watch the pre-restored version on Vimeo and Youtube.
Meanwhile the photos that accompany this piece are from the incredible book Jazz Festival by Jim Marshall and released by Reel Art Press. The book includes photos from the 1958 festival - amongst other years - and Marshall can actually be seen on the film. If you haven't done so already then check out the book!

Unveiling the Mythos: Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon - More Than Just a Drink
Tumblr media
In the world of bourbon, there exists a name that reverberates with an almost mythical quality: Pappy Van Winkle. This distinguished bourbon has transcended its status as a mere spirit, ascending to the realm of legend and lore. But what lies behind the mystique of pappy van winkle bourbon, and why does it captivate the hearts and palates of whiskey enthusiasts worldwide?
To comprehend the allure of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon, one must first grasp its storied history. Rooted in the traditions of the American South, this bourbon traces its lineage back to the pioneering spirit of Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., who laid the groundwork for the brand's legacy at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Kentucky during the early 20th century. It was here that Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon began its journey towards becoming the epitome of craftsmanship and quality.
The tale of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon took a dramatic turn in the late 20th century when Julian Van Winkle III, Pappy's grandson, assumed the reins of the family business. Armed with a reverence for tradition and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Julian III embarked on a mission to elevate Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon to unprecedented heights of acclaim and admiration.
One of the defining characteristics of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon is its meticulous production process. Crafted in small batches using a closely guarded family recipe, this bourbon undergoes an aging process that spans years, not mere months. The result is a spirit of unparalleled depth and complexity, with flavors that unfold on the palate like a symphony of sensations.
Yet, it is not merely the taste of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon that sets it apart; it is also its scarcity. Each year, a limited number of bottles are released to the public, sparking a frenzy among collectors and enthusiasts alike. The quest for a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon has become a pilgrimage of sorts, with aficionados scouring the country in search of this elusive elixir.
But beyond its rarity and flavor, Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon embodies something deeper—a sense of heritage, tradition, and craftsmanship that harkens back to a bygone era. It is a reminder of the artistry and dedication that go into creating truly exceptional bourbon, and a testament to the enduring appeal of an American tradition.
Of course, the cult status of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon has not been without its controversies. Some critics argue that its astronomical price tag and limited availability have transformed it into a symbol of exclusivity rather than a celebration of bourbon craftsmanship. Others lament the commodification of what was once a humble spirit, fearing that its legendary status has eclipsed its true essence.
In the end, whether you view Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon as a symbol of connoisseurship or a victim of its own success, there's no denying its impact on the world of whiskey. From its humble beginnings in a Kentucky distillery to its status as a global phenomenon, Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon continues to captivate and inspire, reminding us that sometimes, the true value of a spirit lies not in its scarcity, but in the stories it tells and the traditions it upholds.

A Journey to the Soul of Scotland - Premium Whisky
Tumblr media
Islay, often referred to as the & Queen of the Hebrides,& boasts a rich, well-documented history dating back to the first century AD. Nestled beneath Scotland's expansive skies and amidst breathtaking landscapes, it beckons nature enthusiasts, bird lovers and aficionados of fine whisky. This Island has undergone numerous transformations over the years, encompassing shifts in culture and scenery, and stands as a significant contributor to the British economy. Spanning approximately 620 square kilometres, Islay ranks as the fifth-largest Scottish island out of over 700, making it the eighth-largest island within the British Isles. Surprisingly, its population is a modest 3,000 souls. From early hunter-gatherer societies around 10,000 BC, through the closing chapter of the Ice Age and into the Mesolithic Period, Islay’s storied past has allowed scholars to examine artefacts and architecture from prehistoric to modern eras. It was also the historical seat of the Lords of the Isles at Finlaggan, a clan that held sway over much of the Highlands and Islands. The capital, Bowmore, is home to the first licensed Islay distillery, founded in 1779, renowned for its production of Islay Malts.
Whisky is savoured and cherished in diverse ways: alone or in the company of friends, with or without water or on ice, whether it &  Scotch, Indian, or Bourbon, whether it's aged to perfection or relatively young. Just as Bordeaux is celebrated for its wine and Guanajuato for its Tequila, Islay is renowned for its peaty nectar—whisky. It has firmly established its reputation as & The Whisky Isle' and is home to nine distilleries among Scotland& 145 active ones, with two more poised to join the whisky-making scene
this year. Over the past two decades, I& relished whisky across continents, countries, and cultures. However, savouring a whisky in its raw form in Islay, directly from the cask in the Distillery Warehouse, offers an entirely distinctive experience. My Islay whisky trail lasted 5 days and across 9 distilleries, interspersed with pairings, Islay Meals and nature walks.
The Trail started at Ardbeg, which was established in 1815 and owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy. Ardbeg produces a heavily peated Islay whisky, emphasising aromas and spices, including sweeter tones like chocolate and vanilla. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future and its doors closed in 1981 for several years. Although they re-opened later that decade, Ardbeg shut down again in 1996. The brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 which saved the Distillery from extinction. In 2000, The Ardbeg Committee was formed to ensure that the doors of Ardbeg would never close again. This dedicated following of global fans now comprises 180k members in over 130 countries. In 2021 work was completed on a multi-million pound investment in a new still house, doubling production capacity. The new Ardbeg range displays innovation while effectively preserving the legacy of a renowned distillery in a contemporary whisky style. The visitor centre and bistro also underwent renovation, and the Distillery introduced a new Ardstream food truck for tourists and locals alike during the pandemic which was a huge success. The trailer sells Burgers, steaks, sausages, warm salads, cookies at price points between BP 6-22. I had a delightful experience, holding warm bread and savoring delicious cookies. Furthermore, this refurbished American trailer also offers customers the chance to prepare pizza using a custom-made wood-burning pizza oven.
