Montpellier 2024 final recap!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Absolutely excellent quality match, starting off with an early break and a thorough racquet smash - not by who you'd think! No, Sascha was very serious and on his best behaviour, it was Borna who got frustrated.

Some amazing tennis, chances for a double break for Sascha and some double faults and breaks back later, we suddenly find ourselves at a set point for Borna - which he converts!
Tumblr media
Sascha had seemed like the slightly better player throughout though, and in set two he shows that he is. He goes up an early break again but this time he holds on, featherlight dropshots and crazy passing shots included.

Set 3 brings more of the same at first...

... suddenly though, Borna, who keeps fighting hard, hits some incredible winners (and of course then the double faults come back for Sascha, too). There are several break points to save.
Fault. Second serve. Sasha hits the fastest serve of the day. (Up to that point. He goes on to hit an even faster first serve later. This is a second serve though. On break point.)

He wins the game shortly thereafter, although not without making everyone nervous again first. After that, he very much finds his rhythm on serve again and almost blows Borna off the court with some of his shots.

Unsurprisingly, the last game isn't quite straightforward either, but in the end, there's a match point, a wry smile and a look of slight disbelief turning into joy. Sascha Bublik has won his second Montpellier title and the fourth title of his career.

Or, to say it in Sascha's words - when asked after the semifinal about leading comfortably at first but then dropping the first set yet again, as he had done all week (a feat which then went on to repeat itself in the final):
"What happened?"
"I guess tennis happened."
Tennis did happen indeed.

Alexander Bublik wins the 2024 Open Sud de France in Montpellier against Borna Coric (6-7, 6-2, 6-3)
(thus becoming the first ATP player in decades to win a tournament after dropping the opening set of each match)
Bonus: everyone loves Sascha :)

Borna Ćorić is one of the few men who look hotter with buzzcut than with long hair. Wish I could explain the science behind it.
