When the old guard had turned their back on one of the greatest voices in country music, American welcomed him in 1994 and began, what could be considered to be, one of the greatest back to back series of country music albums released in the end of the century. Where late century country artists started looking to pop and hip hop to sell records, American Volume One is simply Johnny Cash and an acoustic sitting in a living room. We could spend all day discussing the work with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on American Two and the endless supply of cover songs he reimagined. Let's face it, we all know that Hurt no longer belongs to Nine Inch Nails. That song now belongs to JC and is one of the few times where we can all agree that the cover song is clearly the preferred version. Same can be said for his version of Thirteen by Danzig. Two for two where he absolutely crushed our hearts and left the originals in the dust. Sadly, we could not include Volume Five in this tribute because it was unavailable. You may know the song, "They want Efx" and the whole record is equally entertaining. It's packed with references of 80's nostalgia. If this was released outside of your time period, 1992 to be exact, or simply overlooked in the world full of hip hop, please take this as the universe waving at you to give this a listen. The Das Efx team has a lyric style that is truly their own. With a diggity dang good flow that makes me tic tac toe. Nah, that's not their lyric. They would say "it's tiggity time to get buck wild" and I agree. This record will make you smile from front to back. They "got more flavor than a pack of now and laters!" Let's Talk About... Blind Melon - Self Titled LP There are very few vocalists in the world that would grab attention more than Shannon Hoon did with Blind Melon. We first caught sight of him when featured on the Guns n Roses Don't Cry video. The world would ask, "Who is this flannel shirt wearing cat that gets to hang out with the band?". Not only would our curiosity lead us to Blind Melon but we would discover a band that we would admire and the poetry within. The band has the ability to write captivating and forward thinking riffs that sometimes march toward jam band territory but never go full scale melt down like other jam bands mistakenly over do. Blind Melon then allows the words to float over the entire foundation and it makes for one of the time periods most important bands. This album falls into my essential listening list but also lands on my shelf filed under masterpiece. Many will reference other albums but this one still remains my favorite from the band. Let's Talk About... Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Kollaps Tradixionales 2x10" Aside from being extremely difficult to explain the many variations upon the band name, Discogs currently lists 18 variations of the name, the unique emotional aspect of Thee Silver Mt Zion has the ability to bring tears to my eyes. It's not like other music is not equally emotional in direction but they often miss the mark with the required spark to physically make me turn on the waterworks. It's a rare thing, indeed. Here we typically reserve important artists for the always alternating Top 5 to express the level of importance in my musical world. With their lengthy, slow building passages, violins, group male/female chorus, sometimes spoken word, unique vocal leading voice and the overall roller coaster of despair and hopelessness they convey, ASMZ has secured a spot in my all important Top3. Twosday Tuesday! Let's Talk About... ~ SLAYER - HELL AWAITS (1985) ~ SLAYER - HAUNTING THE CHAPEL (1984) This combo is an important one for the band's evolution. It is the transition many overlook. Hell Awaits is an absolute classic on all accounts. It features the band as a well oiled machine and ready to attack. It's no surprise it receives high praise among the thrash masses. Rightly so and, for many, it was our introduction to the band. What is often left behind is the importance of the Haunting the Chapel EP. It contains what would become the band's signature sound as they moved forward. Both Captor of Sin and Chemical Warfare first appear here and were played pretty consistently in the bands live career afterward. Haunting is as close as we can get to being in the room during the early years when the gates opened for the band. Where Show No Mercy is a high speed introduction to Slayer, Haunting is a live action transformation into the double bass driven speed metal to come within Hell Awaits. It's one of the things I like most about that EP. It is pretty raw but furious. Follow that up with Hell Awaits and the rest in history. Hell Awaits lands on Bobby's Essential Listening list, btw! Let's Talk About... Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love LP When I really think about it, there are very few things that really trigger uncontrollable excitement for me. Most of those are music related and generally dwell in some form of nostalgia. Today we bring forth the example of Too Fast For Love. This cassette has spent more time in my cassette deck than most others. The only album to consider having an equal chance of taking that throne is The Breeders Last Splash. From start to finish I am all in for this record. It checks all the boxes for me and belongs in Bobby's Essential Listening list. Ironically, I do not feel this connection with any other Crue release. Other records are fun and enjoyable but they do not hit this level. Let's Talk About... Just Mustard - Heart Under LP This is a beautiful adventure. Soft, floating lyrics over delicate songwriting that can fully engulf the listener into its warm blanket. There are big sounds in here but nothing that would be too harsh for most listeners. This record has really scored a place in my heart with the hazy, laid back, post-punk, almost shoegaze-esq mixture of sounds. Let's Talk About... Graveyard - Peace LP I've always considered my favorite albums in a constant rotating top 10. Probably because there are way more than 10 albums I could narrow that down to. When a band drifts into the mysterious top 5, well, let's just say they have made some kind of life changing impact in my world. Graveyard is among that short list. Peace is the newest Graveyard release. It's a 2018 model and carries on the band's feverishly blues heavy rock style that hooked me with their 2007 debut. The band has 5 albums that could easily shuffle my top 5. Yes. They are that well received by me. However, I can't lock everything down with one artist so let's convert to top 5 bands and say Sweden's Graveyard deserve every bit of praise I can deliver upon them and they snag a spot in the mysterious top 5 artists list. Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger LP Step into the time machine and witness one of the greatest artists to break through in the grunge era. Among a wealth of great songs that leaked onto the music scene in the early 90's, Soundgarden remained one of the few to develop a sound that was distinguishable from many of the others and unable to be copied. The time signatures are on fire, the precision of the riffs are sharp and hitting at max capacity and it's damn near impossible to find another vocalist that can cut you the way Chris Cornell does. Dead Kennedys - Frankenchrist LP From the opening guitar riff to the last abrupt second, Frankenchrist remains my favorite in a vast discography of amazing DK music. One thing is certain, this group is more than an out of control punk rock band. In fact, they are more akin to a surgical attack toward dissecting what has been and is going on in the world around us. Many of the lyrics to this 1985 release sound like they were written last week. The musicianship involved in these songs set the bar miles high and the verbal content is vital for all to hear. Funny when I hear someone say, "Guess what I found out today!" and it occurs to me that Jello was preaching it over 35 years ago. More people should hear this album. Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley LP The origins of stoner rock may be infinitely in debate. Does it start in the 60's? Maybe the 70's really solidified the sound of weed smoke wafting through amplifiers. Is it psych? What about the extra long, spacey prog songs? One thing that few are not going to debate, Kyuss created the template for what came to be known as desert rock. Rightly so because it is the stuff of legend. We can also agree that stoner/desert have been intertwined in time but it is my opinion that there is a distinction. Combine all of those previous elements, drag the loudest amps with the low end at 100% out to the bleakest desert, crank up the generators, volume maxed out and layer it with one of the greatest vocalists to step into the heavy music world in the 90's. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain LP Among albums that are ranked as classics, this one is on the short list that kicks off by slowly pulling the listener in close with a blistering, emotional and epic intro that exceeds the 10 minute mark. There is no telling how many listeners have tapped out before getting to the second song on the album. Whether it be because it's instrumental, maybe they were not fans of guitar work, who knows. Fact is, if they tapped out early then it's their loss. This is a solid slab of nasty funk that is sure to get the foot tapping and your booty groovin'. LP+10" It took me a little while to give this band a chance. At a glance, I had mistaken GYBE for some type of Norwegian metal band that I would "get around to eventually". Then one day around 2004-5, a friend recommended them and stated they are very mellow, instrumental and cinematic and very much like the band I was in at the time. He passed along a CD-r and it was a life changing experience for me. This band was doing everything that my mind had hoped to hear. Today we are represented with the career bookends, almost. There is an album preceding Skinny Fists but this pick two does showcase the early and current sounds of one of the greatest experiments to even record.
