Aftermath of YKW 1 || or, How to Redeem a Dead Chairman

The last thing he could clearly remember was his own scream.

Blindingly white petals fluttered around as the scene unfolded, attacks flying from either side of the battlefield. Almost all of Mt. Wildwood had been turned white; a forest of faded leaves. A small clearing, near the back, held a large tree home to the Yokai Elevator. The only thing standing between him and the ultimate domination of the human world was a 12-year-old kid and his yokai friends.

Baddinyan and Bruff were in the front getting heavy hits in against the yokai chairman, with the former also inspiriting from time to time. Baddinyan ducked as a tentacle went piercing overhead, managing to get a few slashes in on it in the process. Blandon was busy concealing the healer, Pinkiepoo, while the second-mentioned kept everyone at a reasonable health. In the meantime, Katie was busy purifying the two negatively inspirited; Bloominoko and Leadoni. McKraken sent out beams up from the ground which the party managed to narrowly dodged, ignoring the groans about a singed pompadour coming from the front row. After successfully purifying the snake and oni yokai, Katie handed a spirit talisman to Pinkiepoo before seeing them off. Leadoni and Bruff exchanged knowing glances.

The blue Oni raced over to the right of the chairman and stuck his tongue out at him.

“Hey! Look this way!” He shrieked over the pandemonium of the battlefield.

This caught the attention of the former chairman. He let out an ear piercingly loud laugh before turning to the little oni and sending a beam his way. Leadoni narrowly dodged it, feeling the energy barely miss his ear. He hardly had time to recover before having to dodge another two attacks.Concurrently, Bruff was behind McKraken and while he was distracted, slammed the spiked bat into his side. The squid-like beast roared in pain before finally going down.

“...I think he’s beat!” Bruff shouted to the others across the clearing.

Several cheers rang out, some louder than others. They all regrouped where Katie was to exchange congratulations, mini-celebrate, and general check up; making sure to stay a considerable distance away from the chairman’s body.

“Is everyone okay? Nobody badly hurt?” Katie asked, still a tad shaken up.

The group looked around at each other before Baddinyan spoke up, “Nyothin’ major as far as I can see, nyan. But,”

he turned to look at Bruff, speaking a little quieter. “At some point it looked like you got hit in the back, when he was sendin’ out the tentacles?”

“Eh, doesn’t feel like anythin’s wrong for now. Howzabout you two?” He said looking at Katie and Whisper.

“Well, I don’t think I’ll stop seeing him in my nightmares anytime soon, but other than that, I’m pretty good!” The former replied.Just as she finished speaking, the group felt something move the ground.

Katie turned around to see McKraken propped up on one leg, still appearing dazed.

“I don’t believe it…How could I possquidly lose?” He spoke, muddled and distressed, “What a calamity!”

Whisper came forwards from beside Katie, “Oh, please… Are you quite through?” “Let’s all experience your demise with a little bit of self-respect. As a butler, I am quite proud of all of us! Our cooperation was steller!”

“Well said! We did pretty great, doki!” Pinkiepoo chimed in.

“It’s like Lord Enma always said: The human world needs our friendship, not our control.”The yokai butler looked around at the motley crew.

“To witness the strength of friendship is both inspiring and humbling.”

“Whisper…that’s beautiful!” Katie said.“GRAAAAAAGH!” And with one last howl, as if on cue, McKraken’s body disappeared into a cloud of purple smoke. Katie yelled out a ‘woohoo!’ and was followed not long after by the others, cheering or just generally feeling proud.

“We did it! I’m so glad that’s finally over!”

“As am I. However, this isn’t over yet. There’s still the issue of his followers, and I’ve a feeling he won’t stay down forever.” Whisper floated past the chairman, closer to the yokai elevator.

With a sigh, he said:“If we’re going to finish this, we’ll need to seal this. Possibly permanently.”

There wasn’t but a beat of silence before the eventual collective response.

“What?!”

There was a variety of mixed reactions among the crowd; some confused, some understanding, and some…not so much.

Bruff stepped closer to the floating yokai, “That’s bull-”

“-woah, okay we are not finishing that, doki. But I agree, can you think of any other way we could solve this, Whisper?” Pinkiepoo asked, holding a hand out in front of Bruff in a futile attempt to cease his advancement. It was working surprisingly well.

“I wish that was the case. If McKraken was able to undo the seals the last few times, what is to stop him from trying again?”

“We’ll stop him. What was the point of all this if youse was gonna give him what he wants, anyways,” Bruff grumbled through gritted teeth.

Katie turned to Whisper, pleadingly,“Yeah! I can’t see you all leave again! These past two months have been some of the funnest in my life!”

“U-um, if this counts for anything, It’d do a better job of keeping people…everywhere safe if we were to…s-seal it versus trying to stop it e-every week,” Blandon added, “and we’ll have time to say goodbye this way.”

Bloominoko wailed dejectedly, “Noko noko! Ko… (It’s not fair! One bad yokai spoiled it for all of us…)”

“The yokai world is still in chaos, even though he’s gone. There are still a great deal of his followers who would want nothing more than to harness that power and take it to the human realm. The only way to stop that is to close the elevator.” Whisper reasoned.

“I…really hate to admit this, even to the marshmallow, but he’s got a point. If we go, we can at least make sure those goons aren’t able to come back,” Baddinyan agreed. Despite this and how much it makes sense logically, he knew it didn’t stop it from hurting like hell.

“Blegh, this is getting nowhere! How about a vote?” Leadoni suggests, standing on a high rock by the tree.

“I’ll keep score; me included of course! Ready?”

“I guess…”

“Sure! All’s fair in a show of hands.”

“Let’s get this over with.”

“Okay! Those for the elevator being sealed, bring a thumbs up! Those against, thumbs down.”

It was a pretty obvious vote with Whisper, Baddinyan, Blandon, Pinkiepoo, and (hesitantly) Bloominoko for it, Bruff, Katie, and Leadoni against it.

“Well, I guess that’s only fair…” Katie smiled sadly.

They all circled around the tree to watch Whisper seal the elevator.

“It’s now time to perform my final duty as your butler.” Whisper floated over to the door and pulled out a talisman.

He recited some sort of hymn before slapping the talisman onto the closed doors.

“This elevator is now closed for business!”

The structure started glowing as blue light rings with symbols on them started floating around it. They all got the feeling this was going to be goodbye.

“Well, it was nice knowing you, Katie!” Bloominoko says.

“I’m always going to miss having the best luck on the candy lottery, plus, who’s gonna play uno with me now?” Katie laughed with Bloominoko as he dissipated into light.

“Leadoni, try not to get any more children lost. High five?”

“No promises!” He reached up with his big hand and just as they made contact, he too vanished. Katie briskly walked over to Blandon; the yokai in question looked as if he would shrink into himself if he could.

She smiled as she approached him, hands behind her back, “Don’t think I forgot you! I’ll always remember our sword training together.”

“I don’t want to leave, you actually notice when I’m i-in a room…” Blandon said sorrowfully.

“We’ll always have our memories, and I’ll never forget you.”

She could’ve swore she felt her eyes start to sting this time. He disappeared with the wind, as if he was never there. Pinkiepoo stalked over and tapped her on the shoulder with his staff.

“Hey~! We’re gonna miss you over there. Try not to be too sad about it, okay?”

“Sniff, if you say so, Pinkie. Make sure to say hi to Enma for me!” She asked, choked up.

Pinkiepoo nodded, and both human and yokai teared up as he faded away. Katie walked over to the next two she would bid farewell to. Baddinyan was standing looking cool as ever, and Bruff right beside him; arms crossed over a purple and black jacket. She felt tears form in her eyes as she tried to smile at the two. Bruff furrowed his brow and kneeled down a little to face her.

“Hey, what’s the matter? You ain’t going soft on us now, are ya?” He gave her a pat on the shoulder.

“Hehe, maybe. Truthfully…you two were always like siblings to me…I can’t believe you all are leaving.”

Baddinyan gave a low sigh, “Hey man, we’ll see each other some other time, yeah? We’ll talk nyext time,'' the cat gave her a pat on the back, “this ain’t gonna be goodbye yet, nyan.”

“Yeah kid, who else ‘round here is gonna tease you endlessly? All ‘at aside, We really are gonna miss you, punk.” Bruff wiped at something under his shades, he must have gotten something in his eye.

Katie swiftly pulled them in for a hug, which was reciprocated once the shock wore off. It was almost as if she could still feel them as their spirits dispersed. Hearing the familiar sound of shifting in the air, she knew Whisper was nearby. Her butler—she would even go as far as to call him a friend—since the beginning. The one who allowed her to make such wonderful new friends. The yokai who gave her the watch and stuck by her side (most of the time; Nocturn was a one time thing, promise). She didn’t even know where to begin. Thank him, apologise, in the end, she opted for a bittersweet grin.

“You’re the best yokai butler in the world, I’m glad you bugged me to take the watch.”

“Hey! You practically begged for me to come with you; my charm is irresistible.”

“Sure, sure, believe what you want,” she jested, “I hope we meet again someday. It’s hard to picture a future without you all.”

“Likewise. No matter what, I’m sure you’ll do fine without me. You’ve proven more than capable,” Whisper gave a deep bow. He closed his eyes as he said, “my time as your butler has come to an end.”

And with that, he too faded to nothing but a distant memory. This time, there was nothing stopping the tears falling from her eyes. She looked up into the clouds and allowed herself a final moment of despair for her friends.

“I’ll never forget you guys.”

Asked for some yokai fusions on reddit, this is the first batch

L-R: Frostysol, Nonoko, Venyan, Lord Lie-in, Slimatina, Whisbuzz

Some thoughts on these designs under the cut

Yayyyyyy thoughts on these because I like talking, esp about my creative process

Frostysol: I WILL SAY RIGHT NOW I KNOW I FUCKED UP THE KOSODE MASSIVELY, IT DOESN’T HAVE SLEEVES & IT’S TOO BIG….. I literally only had two ideas for this desgin, one was inspired by the yuki onna segment's backgrounds from Kwaidan & the other was inspired by the spirits from Kuro Neko. The eyes in the backgrounds of yuki onna were so striking & I had just watched the movie recently so it was still fresh in my mind. I knew I wanted her to be closer to a real yuki onna rather than just a cute snow girl spirit. And in that regard Kuro Neko helped with that. I guess subconsciously I wanted her to give off vibes of an unsuspecting girl who kills you & turns out to be a yokai. I thought a kosode would make more sense historically than a random cape, but also idk if young girls wore kosode like that or if it was just adult women. Had no ideas how to incorporate pallysol so I just used him for little details. He's more prevalent in the design intentionally than physically

Nonoko: Pretty simple what do I say. Uh I thought I could do a clover for the tail rather than a heart like Bloominoko. Wanted to make him even fatter than he is cuz he's Noko x2, also made his spots clover shaped cuz what's more lucky than a four leafed clover? An eight leafed clover! Or two four leafed clovers..... Also gave him double teeth & some little wing shaped clovers on his head kinda like Dudunsparce. This one didn't have a lot of thought go into it, I just kinda did what felt natural

Venyan: The first thing I thought about was what colour to make the fur & what colour to make the hair. I decided on red hair cuz it would pop more with dark blue fur. Also made his face pattern a part of his hair cuz he doesn’t have enough room on his face for it with Venocts bangs. I wanted him to be kind of a shitty little bastard, a real cat kinda cat. A good mix of their personalities y’know. Didn’t have much going on with this design either other than I didn’t want the scarf to be all bulky with the dragons cuz Jibanyan is very squart, so I moved them to the tails. Also just because that looks cooler. Had a hell of a time drawing them, I have experience drawing dragons but I’ve always been bad at drawing them roaring or snarling, they look okay but not great.

Lord Lie-in: Also had a bit of trouble combining these two, makes sense cuz I put this one off for more than a few weeks. Didn’t wanna give him big spiky saiyan hair so he got some stray hairs in the front. Took his face framing bangs & tied them up cuz I always like that look (They’re two different pieces tied individually then tied together, so there’s two mini ponytails instead of one. Also had to deliberate on the hair colours cuz I knew I wanted him to have white fur. One of my favourites was red hair with light blue ends but I didn’t go with that one cuz his outfit is mostly red. I also DID NOT feel like giving him a whole kimono (mostly for silhouette reasons) so I just gave him Miku-like sleeves. I originally wanted to give him split leg hakama but when looking at reference I remembered “Oh yeah these things have a lot of pleats & the crotch is pretty low so that’s not great for the silhouette I have in mind.” I gave him harem-esque pants & if you look closely at the upper thigh you can see a little slit in the side of them. Underneath his waist plate & top, the pants tie together like hakama do so I guess I got the hakama in a little bit. I didn’t have any room for his arm warmers so I made them into gloves & gave him the kind of socks that I don’t know what they’re called (Catra has them & I think they’re cool). Also gave him tengu cuz they look cooler than whatever Lie-in Heart has going on. Also cuz it makes him more like “Woah what a bold guy/character!!” And don’t ask how the sword fits in that sheath, idk magic or something he’s the king of the yokai he can do whatever he wants

Slimatina (or Frostymander): Again not much going on here it’s pretty simple. Gave the lower body muscles cuz I noticed the lower body of Slimamander kind of looked like a chest & also just cuz that makes it more creepy. I gave the main body/head some hair clips resembling the patterns on the bulbs of the other heads. Also made the openings in the head look more like a woman’s mouth cuz again, makes it creepy, but also I just thought it would fit more with the Frostina part. Also gave the main heads head eyelashes that look like the openings on the other heads. Decided to give her a cape this time cuz I’m not fuckin around with another kosode. I don’t know if it comes off in the piece but I wanted her cape to be flying up like she just summoned a harsh wind. Last thing is I gave her an eye ornament on her obi & a specially tied obijime cuz I saw one tied like that on google & I thought it looked cute

Whisbuzz: YET AGAIN SAY IT WITH ME! NOT! MUCH! GOING! ON!!!!!! Uhh gave him a frown cuz he’s depressed or whatever, made the top of his hood look like Whispers…… ahoge???? Made his wings wispy on the ends. That’s about it. Fun fact before I drew that one I had another one but I scrapped it because it looked too much like a sperm cell :]

◇Some Yo-kai Watch Headcanons Pt. 2!◇

Currently replaying YKW2 in the form of Psychic Specters this time. Bony Spirits was my first, so it's gonna be awesome to see all the little differences. Anyway, here's another one of these!

Part 1

• Some powerful Yo-kai are able to slip into human forms. These forms are temporary and can't be sustained for long periods of time but it allows them to talk to and interact with the human world. Weaker Yo-kai are able to manage this with the help of certain charms but these human forms last for an even shorter amount of time and can be easily dissipated by outside forces or a lack of concentration.

• Yo-kai fusion, specifically the fusion between two Yo-kai, is almost always temporary and can actually be achieved by any two Yo-kai as long as they are on good terms with each other.

• Some Yo-kai evolutions are temporary as well, acting more like powered-up forms these Yo-kai can learn to take during a crisis. For example Komasan and Komajiro into Komane and Komiger, or Noko into Bloominoko.

• Since obtaining the Yo-kai watch, Terror Time is something you have to deal with possibly happening at night. It's not exactly common but can occur. The origin of terror time was to act as punishment for children who are out disobeying their parents, but if you're an adult, it seems to occur when you're struggling with strong feelings of guilt, anger, self-doubt, or other, complicated emotions.

• Why it still occurs is unknown, but the oni aren't necessarily evil, so maybe it is still in some way supposed to be a trial to help you grow as a person.

• Whisper encourages you to pull from the Crank-a-kai regularly, insisting that nothing but good things can come from it. So far he's been right since it seems to spit out a near unending variety of items of both supernatural and mundane origin; you've even made some new Yo-kai friends that way.

• Using human currency always seems to work just fine but you've found more than a couple coins of Yo-kai origin and the different types seem to yield different results. The capsules in the machine itself also never seem to deplete.

• Putting a Yo-kai's medal into the coin slot of the Crank-a-kai and turning the knob will trap said Yo-kai in the machine. You found this out one day while messing around with Jibanyan, only to have to spend the rest of the evening and a lot of coins trying to get him back out.

• That's actually how Whisper lost his Yo-kai medal. Most Yo-kai are simply able to replicate their medallions when they're lost, but he was either in the Crank-a-kai for way too long to be able to, or he just hasn't figured out how yet. (Probably the latter.)

• Hopefully you'll never have to put that trick to any use, considering you have to be friends with a Yo-kai in the first place to even obtain their medal. You automatically receive the medals of any Yo-kai you free from the Crank-a-kai though, so if you ever release a more unsavory one that had good reason to be sealed away, you can easily put it back in its place.

• Out of curiosity one day, you asked one of the Mt. Wildwood ground keepers about how long it has been there, but they responded that there was no such abandoned capsule machine on the mountain that they knew of, near the sacred tree or otherwise.

• Whisper also thinks it's a good idea for you to continue to pull from the oni misfortunes despite the consequences. The tags you receive seem to have evil warding properties at the expense of the mini curse placed on you each time you claim one. It can range from minor to major inconveniences and lasts until the end of the day, so it's up to you to decide if they're worth it.

Really wanna talk about specific Yo-kai and characters next as well as their relationships with the player, so that's what I'm gonna do!
