Evening with Artists, Thursday April 6th
I’m excited to have our Senior Seminar class attend this panel discussion organized by the Center for Career Development on campus coming up next week. (We will plan to attend this event until 9pm and then meet back in Rood 51 for the remaining class time.)
The panelists are each Art department alumni from Biola, here to share their post BFA experiences in the arts.
These speakers include:
Paul Loya
Paul owns a gallery exhibiting emerging and established contemporary artists in Los Angeles. Paul Loya Gallery sets a blank canvas for each of the exhibiting artists to create his or her own creative environment that best compliments their work. Giving the viewer a complete experience of the artist’s vision. We want to provide a space to embrace a community for artist, collectors, friends and supporters to have events and gatherings both casual and formal.
Dawn Nicole Hamby
Dawn is an interdisciplinary artist who enjoys working in a wide range of media. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, and California Teaching Credential from Biola University and has been teaching high school students since 2006. She loves helping students to discover their God-given creativity and to better understand their relationship with God as creations of the Master Artist. In addition to serving as the Visual & Media Arts Department Chair & Arts Academy Director at Orange Lutheran High School, she teaches at Concordia University Irvine and continues to exhibit her artwork locally.
Alyssa Cordova
Alyssa is an artist and curator with a particular emphasis on contemporary art through support of emerging artists, arts education, and interdisciplinary collaborations. She received her B.F.A. in sculpture from Biola University and later attended California State University Fullerton, where she received her M.F.A. in Exhibition Design and Museum Studies and was selected as the 2010 CSUF Graduate Fellow in Exhibition Design. From 2005-2011, she worked at Grand Central Art Center, a unique artist colony and gallery in Santa Ana as the Education, Curatorial and Public Relations Coordinator. While there, she had the opportunity to be involved with many community programs and organized and curated dozens of exhibitions. In 2009, she formed a curating collective with five other curators called Sixpack Projects, whose mission is to support emerging artists in Southern California and beyond. Sixpack Projects has installed and curated exhibitions at museums, galleries and unconventional public sites such as vacant retail spaces. Currently, Alyssa is Assistant Curator at the Orange County Museum of Art, where she has worked on numerous large scale exhibitions and curated several permanent collection exhibitions such as Selections: Robert Rauschenberg (2015) We Were Here: Absence of the Figure (2016) and recently Forms of Identity: Women Artists in the 90s. She is currently helping organize the upcoming OCMA 2017 Cal-Pacific Triennial. with the Senior Curator and is a contributing writer to Artillery Magazine.
John Choura
John is a Designer living in Long Beach, CA. Currently Product Design Lead at Payoff, Inc. by day, and Adjunct Professor at Biola by night. With a client list that includes large national companies like Vizio, Amazing Grass, and Blossom, to small businesses like Arcade Coffee Roasters, and Grand Food & Beverage; John's roles have been cross-disciplinary. Including art direction, product design, packaging design, brand/identity design, editorial illustration, and web and app design and development. Today, John is interested in using design and technology to shake-up the function of the financial world for people who are non-financial types.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Elaina Swanson and Jon Anderson and is held in Andrew’s Banquet Room.
ALSO: There is a Career Expo for Social Impact happening this Wednesday on campus. Though not directly related to the arts, many of you may have interest in this event as well. Check out this link for more information.
