1. Make You Happy (Miami Edit) by MIKA
You talk, how can I listen, when I hear the people screams telling me the things I should believe in? / I’ll show you what I’m made of / They can’t cover up for me ‘cause they know there’s nothing I’m afraid of / All I wanna do is make you happy
We begin with a song for Ebbie’s hopes and dreams. Though it’s at face value a song about a rough patch in a relationship, I get the vibes from this song about him trying to carve out his place in the world, trying to find the people that he can trust and who will be good for him, gaining confidence, and ultimately, being someone who can make others happy.
2. Pluto by Sleeping at Last
I’ve been worried all my life, a nervous wreck most of the time / I’ve always been afraid of heights, of falling backwards, falling backwards
This is a song about growing up, about learning how to be vulnerable and having that be a strength. It’s about letting go of fear and replacing it with acceptance of not knowing. Bonus points for the metaphor of falling.
3. I Want the Sky by Lucy Schwartz
I’m ready, ready to run free / I’d like to know what lies beyond the blue sea
Ebbie’s a very inquisitive guy! He likes to know and see and wander and gather! This is a song about leaving home and feeling good about it, because there’s so many new things out there!!!
4. Change of Scenery by Val Emmich
I can’t fall asleep, can’t stop my feet from moving under me / Can’t find it in the books I read, the films I see, the girls I meet / A change of scenery is what I need / A change of scenery is calling me
A song for a wanderer never satisfied. He spent most of his life never quite feeling like he was where he belonged, and trying to figure out what the next destination would be that would take every part of him.
5. On My Way by SHEL
There’s a part of who you are that you never realized / Come on child, stop your sleeping / Walk all day, sing all night, come on over the rise
I have a lot of songs about moving around and trying to find yourself, and this one was DM recommended!!!
6. Shelter by Porter Robinson and Madeon
It’s a long way forwards, so trust in me / And I’ll give them shelter like you’ve done for me
A song about a boy who’s dedicated his life to making sure that everyone has a place to feel safe.
7. Missing Home by flora cash
What does it take to be happy? What does it take to be satisfied? / Got a lot of hunger and got a lot of big dreams and / Even though I’m mining gold, I’m missing home somehow
Though he’s a wanderer, Ebbie loves his family, and homesickness can be a real bitch sometimes. He made the whole party stop just so he could say hi to his parents and siblings. This is a song for the people he’s heartbroken to leave behind.
8. Flow by Shawn James
Well, whatcha gonna do when your ship starts to sink? / Caught in a monstrous sea and won’t be able to think / And it’s there that you’ll learn what I know / That all of this world will fade / You gotta learn to let it all go and flow like a river
Funny how dying and coming back again will make you think about how the world goes on with or without you, and how you get pulled along the path of fate not the other way around.
9. All We Do by Oh Wonder
I’ve been upside down, I don’t wanna be the right way round, Can’t find paradise on the ground / All we do is hide away / All we do is chase the day
Being the guy who can’t die and still the most cowardly person on a quest to save literally the entire fucking world can get in your head a little bit. Ebbie already had so many insecurities but they certainly haven’t gotten better since he became the most fucked up abomination of a thing (un?)alive and he still doesn’t know who he is or what he’s supposed to do or how to be important.
10. Six by Sleeping at Last
Oh God, I’m so tired of being afraid / What would it feel like to put this baggage down? If I’m being honest, I’m not sure I’d know how / I want to take shelter but I’m ready, ready to fight / And somewhere in the middle I feel a little paralyzed / But maybe I’m stronger than I know / I want to believe, no, I choose to believe, that I am a sanctuary / Fear won’t go away, but I can keep it at bay
If the last song was about Ebbie’s insecurities, this song is about his utter determination to do something despite them. So what, if he’s a coward and a worrier? He knows better than anyone the importance of a safe place, and he will make that for people if its the last thing he does. (It will be the last thing he does). Bonus points for the opening verse being about fear of falling again.
11. Happy Ending by MIKA
This is the hardest story that I have ever told / No hope, no love, no glory / Happy endings gone forever more
I added this song the night Ebbie died (and was decided that he would be resurrected). The story of the Humblewood may have a happy ending, but his does not. I’ve accepted it.
