Your mouth is an intelligent system made to work with every piece doing its part. When you’re missing a tooth, the empty spaces are more than unsightly; they can be dangerous. Your other teeth, your gums, and even the bones in your face rely on you having a full smile.
Enter: dental implants. Thanks to improved technology, you can replace a single tooth or a whole row of teeth quickly and effectively. Dental implants can improve your overall oral health and are now considered the gold standard in tooth replacement technology.
Your Salt Lake City dentists at Natural Smiles Dentistry offers professional placement and restoration of dental implants, so let us tell you more about them and how they can help protect your greatest asset and secure your smile!
How Do Dental Implants Work?
Teeth have even more going on under the surface of your gums than above. What you see when you look at your teeth is the hard, white crown. (See, you knew you must be royalty!) Then, like a plant, each tooth has a long root extending down into the jawbone.
Nearly 98% of implant treatments are successful, and healthy implants can last a lifetime when properly cared for. Dental implants are highly successful because they closely imitate your natural tooth in every way. Implant teeth have a top crown and a permanent root fixed into your jawbone—unlike traditional dental restorations that only replace the visible crown.
The Security of Dental Implants
The fact that dental implants are permanent and made to integrate perfectly into your mouth gives them the potential to benefit your overall health and wellness in many ways, such as:
Implants prevent your other teeth from moving.
Implants prevent your jawbone from deteriorating.
Unlike ill-fitting restorations, implants alleviate pain and discomfort.
Implants are cleaned and maintained using the same methods as natural teeth.
Implants won’t break as natural teeth can.
Implants are easier to floss between and clean than a removable bridge, making prevention of gum disease and bad breath a snap.
Implants also make speaking, eating, and kissing easier so life is a lot more fun!
Should You Get Dental Implants?
Getting dental implants requires that your gums and jaw are relatively healthy to start, and you must be committed to proper oral hygiene to maintain them so they last a lifetime. Only your [CITY] dentist can tell you if implants are the best option for you.
If you’re missing a tooth, don’t delay! Contact Natural Smiles Dentistry and let’s get started on giving you a smile you can wear with security and confidence.

At Natural Smiles Dentistry, we understand that dental insurance can be a tricky thing to navigate. Evaluating dental plans and considering deductibles, benefits, which treatments are covered, and the mountain of other information insurance companies provide can be a headache in and of itself.
Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine want every Salt Lake City patient to have the power to control their own health, so here’s a simplified guide to the basics of dental health insurance.
Dental Insurance
Dental insurance is an excellent investment that helps people ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles. However, in order to get the best value from your dental insurance, there are a few things you need to know. Here are the answers to the most common questions we hear at Natural Smiles Dentistry.
What is Dental Insurance?
Having dental insurance means that an insurance provider will pay for a percentage of the dental care that you need every year. Plans vary in terms of how much they cost, how much they cover, and which dentists are included. If you would like to know if Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine is included in your provider network, please contact Natural Smiles Dentistry today.
What Do Dental Insurance Plans Cover?
Insurance carriers cover dental procedures in three fundamental categories:  preventive (examinations, routine cleanings, x-rays, etc.); basic/restorative (cavity fillings, tooth extractions, etc.); and major (crowns, bridges, surgical extractions, dental implants, etc.).
The classification of procedures into categories varies according to each insurance provider, but most dental insurance plans have “100-80-50” coverage, which means routine cleanings, checkups, and diagnostic care are paid for in full; 80 percent of the cost of fillings, root canals, and other basic procedures are covered; and 50 percent of the cost of dental implants and other major procedures are covered. Cosmetic dental procedures, such as whitening treatments, are not usually covered.
Premiums, Copays, Deductibles & Maximums
Premiums – These are the basic yearly or monthly cost of your dental insurance. Premiums do not include copayments or deductibles.
Copayments – Per visit payments of a flat rate or a percentage of the total appointment cost.
Deductibles – For each plan, there is an annual amount that you must pay before insurance will cover expenses. After your deductible is met, your insurance plan will cover a percentage of the cost of your dental care.
Plan Maximums – Most plans include a maximum dollar amount that will be paid for your dental expenses. You are financially responsible for any amount exceeding your plan maximum.
When Do Benefits Renew?
Benefits are usually calculated yearly and renew on the 1st of January. It is important to know that unused coverage does not carry over to the next year.
If you have specific questions about your dental insurance, you can contact your insurance provider directly or contact Natural Smiles Dentistry today! We are always happy to answer any questions that help keep Salt Lake City smiles beautiful and healthy.

There are lots of ways to deal with missing or damaged teeth. You’ve probably heard one of us at Natural Smiles Dentistry talking about implants, dentures, bridges, and crowns, but have you ever wondered what they are and how they work? Dr. Thomas Brickey and Dr. Laura Provine know that folks like to be informed, so think of this as your personal guide to dental restorations that might end up in your mouth.
Crowns, Bridges & Dentures, Oh My!
At some point in time, most of us will lose at least one adult tooth. The most common cause of tooth loss is gum disease, but it could also be an accident, a sports injury, or a cavity. Some people are even born without the ability to develop one or more adult teeth! Either way, the point is that most Salt Lake City residents will one day face a decision: how do I replace my lost or damaged tooth? There are many ways to fill a gap in your bite:
Crowns
Crowns themselves do not replace entire teeth, but they play an important role in the process of stabilizing teeth and supporting other devices that restore harmony to your bite. Sometimes, your Salt Lake City dentists will place a crown on a patient’s tooth to improve its appearance or strengthen it after a cavity has left the tooth unable to support a filling.
Placed directly over the surface of the tooth (like a king’s crown), crowns can also be used to protect weak teeth, repair broken teeth, attach and anchor a bridge, and/or cover an implant. They come in a variety of materials and colors to suit a number of different needs.
Bridges
Bridges are permanent or removable dental restoration appliances that replace missing teeth with artificial teeth. By creating a literal bridge between gaps, bridges improve the functionality of your bite and the beauty of your smile.
Bridges can be made of gold, alloys, porcelain, or any combination thereof. Both fixed and removable bridges make use of surrounding teeth for support, but fixed bridges are usually more stable than removable bridges. However, they are also more expensive than removable bridges.
Dentures
If you have lost most or all of your teeth, dentures may be the way to go. Dentures are natural-looking, removable appliances that allow you to eat and speak normally, despite a lack of teeth. They also help prevent sagging of the facial muscles, which can occur if there are little or no teeth to support the structure of your face.
There are three types of dentures: conventional, immediate, and overdentures. Conventional dentures require the removal of any remaining teeth and a healing period (sometimes several months or longer) before they can be fitted. Immediate dentures also require the removal of your remaining teeth but are inserted the same day as the removal.
Overdentures are a great option if you have a few healthy teeth left. They are called overdentures because Natural Smiles Dentistry fits them over your remaining teeth, which provide support and help keep your jawbone healthy. Although the process of adapting to your dentures may be uncomfortable at first, having functional teeth is much better for your health in the long run!
Implants
In terms of preserving the integrity of the jawbone and providing support and strength to nearby crowns, bridges, and/or dentures, dental implants are the best option for missing teeth. Implants are small, titanium posts that are surgically inserted directly into your jawbone. The bone grows around them, much like a natural root, and fixes them in place.
Once the bone around the implant is fully healed, a replacement tooth is placed over the implant. This is the closest you can come to a natural tooth. Stimulation from chewing with an implant helps to preserve the jawbone and encourage circulation in the surrounding area. Implants are a permanent solution for a healthier smile.
Why Fix Missing Teeth?
Even if missing teeth aren’t visible and don’t seem to affect your bite, it is still important to do something about them. The reasons for using crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants go beyond cosmetics and comfort. Your adult teeth are designed to work as a team, and any missing player can compromise the function of your bite, ease of speech, susceptibility to dental disease, and the health of your jawbone.

Whether you’ve never been thrilled with your smile, or it lacks the luster it once had, bonding is a multipurpose cosmetic and restorative dental procedure that can be performed on patients of all ages. Bonding has the capability to fill gaps, correct damage, and refurbish the overall structure and look of your teeth. Natural Smiles Dentistry wants every patient to feel good about their smile, but if you feel less than confident in yours, we may recommend a simple and affordable treatment called dental bonding.
What is the Bonding Procedure?
There are two different types of dental bonding: direct composite bonding and adhesive bonding. Adhesive bonding attaches a separate restoration to a tooth, so that type of bonding is used for veneers, crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays. This article will focus on direct composite bonding, which is its own minimally invasive smile makeover procedure—and the one most people think of when they hear the terms “bonding” or “dental bonding.”
Dental bonding is a noninvasive treatment where tooth-colored material—either a composite resin or a modifiable ceramic—is applied directly to the teeth. Once complete, the bonding procedure restores and rejuvenates the teeth, both in appearance and in structure. Unless bonding is being used to correct decay, the procedure rarely requires anesthesia and can be performed in a single dental appointment!
Before bonding itself can begin, the tooth surface is abraded and treated with a conditioning liquid, which facilitates the adherence of the bonding material to the tooth. Since preparation to bond teeth is not very extensive, the bulk of existing natural tooth structure can be saved—and the bonding resin can fuse itself to the natural tooth, strengthening it in the process. Bonding resin has a consistency that resembles putty and is color-matched to natural teeth before being applied, molded, and smoothed to the preferred shape.
Once bonding resin has been applied and the desired effect has been achieved, an ultraviolet (UV) light or laser is used to harden the material. Once the bond has hardened, it is trimmed, shaped, and polished to match the rest of the tooth’s natural sheen and shape. The overall bonding process averages 30 minutes per tooth.
When is Bonding a Good Solution?
Every dental situation is different, but here are some situations where bonding may be recommended:
To repair decayed, chipped, cracked, broken, fractured, or otherwise physically damaged teeth
To improve appearance of teeth – close a gap, fix alignment, make tooth shape more uniform
To fill in tooth root area that has been exposed by receding gums
Aesthetically pleasing alternative to metal amalgam fillings (depending on location in the mouth and extent of decay)
How Should Bonded Teeth Be Cared For?
Bonded teeth look, feel, and function like natural teeth and should be cared for with a sound oral hygiene routine. Beverages like soda, dark-colored juices, and sports drinks should be avoided whenever possible to prevent stains. If you bite your fingernails, eat ice or chew pencils and pens, you should consider quitting because these habits chip away at bonding material (and natural teeth!)—so if you recognize yourself in any of these vices, quit it!
Will Future Dental Restoration Be Needed?
While bonding composite isn’t quite as durable as natural tooth enamel, with proper care, it can usually last for an average of ten years before repair is needed. Bonding resin, just like natural enamel, does show visible wear and tear, dulling with age, and staining over time. Depending on your individual dental situation, a more permanent restorative procedure like a crown or veneers may be the best long-term decision.
Bonding Pros & Cons
Pros:
Takes an hour or less to apply
Less expensive alternative to fillings or other restorations
Looks natural – bonding solution is matched to natural teeth
Minimally invasive
Rarely requires anesthesia
Does not reduce natural tooth structure
Cons:
Can stain or dull over time
Easier to break or chip than other restorations
Will likely require repair or restoration in the future
What to Do Following a Bonding Treatment
If you just had a bonding treatment, or are considering bonding, here’s what you should know following the procedure to ensure the best results. Avoid eating or drinking foods that stain (coffee, tea, red wine, etc.) for the first 48 hours. Call Dr. Brickey or Dr. Provine if you notice sharp edges, if chips or pieces fall out, or if your teeth feel strange or “off” when biting down.
It’s hard to tell dental work has been done on bonded teeth—all people notice is that your smile looks fantastic. Contact us today if you have questions or would like to learn more about dental bonding. Your Salt Lake City dentists look forward to increasing your smile confidence. Get ready for lots of compliments!

At Natural Smiles Dentistry, our goal is to make your dental visits as pleasant as possible. Part of this effort includes taking the complication out of utilizing your insurance benefits. Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine know there can be confusing terms and stipulations in insurance plans that can be a barrier between you and the care you need. We aim to remove that barrier by filing paperwork for our Salt Lake City patients and providing the details necessary for you to make the best decisions possible for your oral and overall health.
Am I covered?
Similar to medical coverage, there are numerous types of dental plans, typically with the focus on prevention. What does this mean? It means Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine want to keep your mouth free of infection and pain, and your smile bright and beautiful. If you are insured, your dental plan can help us achieve this goal. How? Usually with 100% coverage of preventive services, such as professional cleanings (known as prophylaxis in the dental world), x-rays, and check-ups.
If your employer offers dental coverage, you might wonder if it’s worth buying into. We know the costs can seem steep, but when you consider how important your oral health is to your overall health, and the fact that you want to keep all of the teeth you have, its significance becomes a bit easier to recognize.
What else is included?
When you wind up in need of more than a cleaning (it can happen to the best of us), most carriers will pay 80% of the cost for cavity fillings, tooth extractions, and/or root canals. If you’ve suffered a dental injury or an infection that’s caused the need for more extensive restorative services, such as crowns, bridges, surgical extractions, or dental implants, these may be covered up to 50%. When it comes to cosmetic treatments such as Invisalign®, teeth whitening, or veneers, we’re sorry to say that insurance rarely covers these expenses and you will have to pay out of pocket.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t look into these options if you desire a confidence boost in the form of a brighter, more beautiful smile. Many dental offices accept payment from lenders like CareCredit®.
Common Insurance Terms
Premiums – Your premium is the annual or monthly cost of your insurance. If you’re insured through your employer, this is often extracted from your pay. Your premium does not include copayments or deductibles.
Copayments – Your copay is either a predetermined flat rate per visit or a percentage of the total appointment cost. This will vary plan by plan.
Deductibles – This is probably the most confusing part of insurance coverage for most people. Insurers are used to answering the question: “Why do I have a deductible when I already pay a premium?” Although it seems superfluous, it’s to keep the monthly or annual costs lower, as well as the copay. When you’ve met your deductible, your insurance plan will kick in and cover the percentages as outlined in your plan.
Plan Maximums – With the focus on prevention when it comes to oral health and dental insurance, the majority of dental coverage plans have maximums, and they tend to run low. If you’ve met your annual maximum, additional services will require out-of-pocket payment. This is another instance when financing plans can come in handy, but even more importantly: your diligent oral hygiene routine, a healthy diet, and healthy lifestyle.
What if I don’t use my benefits?
Unfortunately, there are no rollovers in dental insurance. If you’re paying a premium, it makes sense to take advantage of preventive care at 100% of the cost, or other services at a discount. Besides, Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine love seeing your smile and take pride in making visits pleasant!
The more you see us, the more we’re able to note what is and isn’t normal for your teeth, gums, tongue, saliva production, jawbone… the list is longer than most suspect at first! If we do catch a problem, it’s easier on your health, schedule, and wallet to treat it at the earliest stage possible. It’s also hard to beat the feeling of a professional cleaning. Our hygienists are gentle but thorough when it comes to removing tough tartar, which forms rather quickly if plaque is left to harden.
How can Natural Smiles Dentistry help?
If you have additional questions about your dental insurance, you may be able to find the answers you need on the carrier’s website, by calling them directly, or reaching out to us, your Salt Lake City dentist. We are happy to help you get the most from your benefits, and we can provide pre-treatment estimates so you can budget accordingly.

Technology has changed nearly every aspect of human life and modern society. New tools, programs, and education can greatly improve your healthcare, too! Let’s say you need any kind of standard dental restoration for a cracked or missing tooth. From x-rays and impressions to surgery and installation, your whole treatment could be digital. We’re so used to digital tools these days, you may not even notice how much technology a dentist can utilize to best serve your oral health needs. Below are some of the ways your oral care may be digitized.
CAD/CAM Software
Short for computer-assisted design and computer-assisted manufacturing, this software brings you better fitting crowns, veneers, inlays and onlays, and bridges. CAD/CAM technology comes out of industrial engineering and manufacturing and into the dental office to provide faster, superior products and services in oral health. Using computers to design oral appliances increases accuracy, efficiency, appearance, and function.
CAD/CAM dental services start with 3D images. The computer takes the images and creates a model of whatever restorative appliance you need. Research shows that dental restorations made with CAD/CAM technology are stronger and less likely to break. This is great news if you’re already dealing with oral health issues and you just want everything to look natural and work well.
Same-Day Milling
Thanks to CAD/CAM technology, you can now get many dental restorations placed in just one visit to the dental office. This is good news for busy people! All crowns, veneers, and onlays need to actually be created and shaped out of porcelain or composite. After using digital images to get a picture of your mouth, the information will be sent to a machine that can automatically create a natural-looking restoration on the spot.
The machine can usually make these in about 20 minutes. The milling machine may also glaze or stain the porcelain to best match your natural teeth. Like clay pottery, the porcelain or composite then needs to be fired. All of this should take anywhere from one to two hours. You can walk into the dentist toothless and walk out with a full, vibrant smile the same day.
Guided Surgery
Surgical guides are 3D computer images that your dentist may use to improve the accuracy and safety of having dental implants placed. Not everyone is a good candidate for implants, but if your dentist believes you are, they may also use a surgical guide during your procedure.
A surgical guide uses digital images to give us a realistic picture of your jawbones, gums, nerves, and more. A computer will help your Salt Lake City dentist plan the whole procedure so that each step and measurement is more accurate. With all of this important information, dentists can work faster so you’re in the chair less (as much as we love to see you).
Cone Beam Imaging
When your doctor or dentist needs to see beyond the naked eye, they can use one of many different x-ray and imaging technologies. Cone-beam images are 3D scans that use cone-shaped laser beams to get a complete scan of your entire mouth. Cone-beams use more radiation than a standard dental x-ray, but far less than a standard medical CT scan. Cone-beam images especially help with placement and installation of dental implants.
Electronic Booking & Billing
Gone are the days of endless stacks of paper you need to keep track of and store. Gone are the days of being on hold with a receptionist. Many dental offices now make use of email and online programs to communicate with patients both for billing and making new appointments.
Now, everything you need to know about your oral care can be kept in one place to easily see and understand. Nothing can replace the friendly and professional environment of a good dental office, but digital communication helps ensure that you, your dentist, and the insurance providers are all on the same page. So when you walk in for your appointment, things should flow seamlessly and with no surprises.
Finding a Digital Dentist
An everyday visit to the dentist looks a lot different today than it has in decades past. The services you need may require any or all of the above technology to provide you quality care and healthy outcomes.
At Natural Smiles Dentistry in Salt Lake City, we are always learning more about how to use technology to better serve you. If you’re looking for a professional oral care provider, Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine are taking new patients. Make an appointment today to learn more about what we can do for you and your smile!

Many Salt Lake City residents will lose a tooth at some point in their lives, but that doesn’t mean your smile has to suffer. There are numerous ways to fix a lost tooth, but today, Dr. Brickey & Dr. Provine would like to educate you about the best option for a healthy smile that will last a lifetime: dental implants. Here are some facts about dental implants. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a consultation, don’t hesitate to give us at Natural Smiles Dentistry a call.
Implants function just like real teeth
If you are looking for a solution that will preserve and improve the health of your mouth, implants are the way to go. Although dentures and bridges can help simulate the function of real teeth, they do not stimulate the jawbone. Implants are placed directly in the jawbone, just like the root of a tooth. As a result, they can put a stop to painful, damaging reabsorption, so that you never have to deal with that “sunken in” look. On top of that, implants are sturdier than any other form of dental appliance.
Implants stabilize other appliances
If you already have bridges, crowns, or dentures and are considering implants, listen to this – implants add stability to other appliances. Because they are rooted in the jawbone like real teeth, they serve as excellent support systems for appliances and help to maintain the natural structure of your face.
Implants can last a lifetime
It is common to hear about dental appliances needing to be adjusted, fixed or replaced altogether. Salt Lake City residents with dentures, bridges, and/or crowns may find that they can wear out and require attention. However, implants have the potential to last as long as you do. There is no way to be certain, but the odd are in your favor. If cared for with good dental hygiene and regular visits to Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine, your implant will likely stick with you forever.
Dr. Brickey and Dr. Provine are experts in dental implants.
If your smile is haunted by a missing tooth, we at Natural Smiles Dentistry can help! Give us a call to find out how you can get the smile you’ve always wanted.

Have you ever heard someone say, “It was worse than a root canal?” Most of us in Salt Lake City are used to hearing root canals compared to some genuinely unpleasant circumstances, but Dr. Brickey & Dr. Provine would like set the record straight and talk about how root canals can do some serious dental good. As always, we are happy to answer any questions you may have, so please feel free to give Natural Smiles Dentistry a call.
Root Canals Save Teeth
Here it comes, the question on everyone’s mind – why on Earth would you want a root canal?! There is one thing all dentists in Salt Lake City and beyond will agree on – saving your natural teeth is always the best option. There are many ways that Dr. Brickey & Dr. Provine can replace missing or damaged teeth, but nothing is as good as the real thing. If you have a tooth with inflamed or infected pulp, a root canal, or endodontic treatment, can get rid of the infection and save it. Thus, root canals are preferable to extraction. Here are some more advantages of endodontic treatment:
Natural appearance
Efficient chewing
Tolerance of normal bite force and sensation
Surrounding teeth are protected from extra wear and/or strain
Root Canals Get Rid of Pain
Perhaps if you had a root canal before modern techniques and anesthetics, it would live up to its reputation. That is not the case today, though, fortunately. In reality, if you have had a root canal, you are six times more likely to say that it was “painless” than those that have never experienced the procedure. The truth is, root canals actually get rid of the pain by removing infected, damaged tissues. When Dr. Brickey & Dr. Provine perform a root canal, they clean out the infection, sterilize/disinfect the inside of the tooth, use a rubber sealant to fill the gap, and then places a crown or filling on top to protect the tooth. Once it is done, the tooth functions just like its neighbors. Voila, your tooth is now healthy again!
At Natural Smiles Dentistry, we love changing people’s minds about root canals, so please give us a call to find out if you can benefit from this treatment. Maybe then you’ll start saying, “That was almost as pleasant as a root canal!”
