sometimes people have the tendency to conflate ‘this portrays bigotry’ & ‘this condones bigotry/is itself bigoted’
#me.txt#📔#specifically ☝️ im thinking about an article i read that argued cruising 1980 was homophobic because (cw) one of the opening scenes involve#a cop sexually assaulting a trans sex worker & later when the woman reports it the cop she talks to ignores her & claims shes lying#(later in the film he sees that she wasnt & he had been wrong all along by the way)#& the argument was because it showed how the police hurt queer people it *checks notes* supports the cops hurting queer people?#which isnt remotely the case?#because rhe fucking Point of the scene was to establish how the police are the true villain even though the protagonist is one?#my point is. people act like protagonists doing a thing is equivalent to the story that theyre in supporting the thing#or protagonists being bigoted is equivalent to the story itself being bigoted#like have you considered that the actions that you consider problematic or story that you consider problematic maybe i dont know says somet#ing about what the story is trying to SAY & the POINT the author is trying to make instead of crying about someone PORTRAYING OPPRESSION
