How to replace a bathtub with a shower
Plan the footprint of the shower
If you remove a 150 cm by 75 cm bathtub, you can choose a shower enclosure of the same size. Usually this is 150 cm long, but the width can vary from 76 cm to 90 cm. If you keep the old footprint, avoid excessive repair work on the walls and flooring, as the shower tray and walls cover most of the old footprint.
Obtain permits for the remodel
In many communities, replacing a bathtub with a shower requires a permit because of the piping that must be installed. Check with your local permitting authority.
Close the water supply
If your bathtub has an intermediate shut-off valve near the tub, use it to shut off the water supply to the tub. Otherwise, close the main water shutoff valve in your home before starting this project.
Remove the tub surround or tiles
Using a pry bar and an oscillating multitool, remove the tub surround around the tub. Ceramic tiles will need to be tapped with a hammer and pry bar. If the surround is plastic, you may need to peel it off the studs, drywall or cement board, as it may have been bonded to one of these backing materials.
Remove the bathtub
Remove any screws or nails that secure the tub rim to the wall. Using a helper, lift one side of the bathtub to remove it. You may need to remove a small section of drywall next to the tub area to accommodate one of the outer corners of the tub as it tilts upward. Thoroughly clean the demolished area and remove nails and screws from the studs.
Repair the studs and flooring
Light carpentry work may be required to repair some of the studs, flooring or joists exposed by the removed tub.
Connecting the shower controls and shower head
At this point, the tub faucets and water spout for the bathtub are positioned vertically. For showers, both should be positioned higher. Specific heights vary depending on the type of control (single valve or dual valve) and manufacturer.
Check the shower drain
If the old tub drain is in the correct location for the new shower drain and is in good condition, there is no reason to move it, although it may need to be adjusted vertically with an extension.
Installing the shower tray
Depending on your bathroom floor and the manufacturer's requirements for the shower pan, you may need to create a mortar bed for the shower pan to ensure a solid installation that won't flex. With some manufacturers, this is not required. Nail or screw the lip of the shower tray to the studs.
