I think natural dialogue and witty/poetic/dramatic dialogue are just 2 separate skills. I LOVE normal, natural awkward dialogue where people might not know how to say things or etc, etc. But I also just LOVE completely unrealistic (or rather uncommon bc come on sometimes people have the most epic conversations) over-the-top dialogue where the words are just perfect for peak humor, sadness, etc. They're both great.

#rambling about writing #also when people use both in the same story for contrast *chef's kiss*#that one scene where the character is really fucking on-point just doing amazing with smooth banter and all that #followed by the most anticlimactic mundane next morning kitchen convo #for example #or being interrogated and clearly fumbling/fucking up in all the really human ways people do #only to have like the most heartfelt poetic confession/goodbye speech/whatever #or when 2 different characters are on opposite sides of the eloquence spectrum #basically peter nureyev (smooth) and juno steel (speaks like a normal human)#but there are other examples #hal rambles
