Sometimes I think about what my pets would be like as humans. My leopard gecko, for example, would be an incredibly angry elderly Pakistani woman who can, for reasons unknown, beat anyone in a fight. The flip side is that it makes it much funnier to think about which herp we're getting next summer. Do we want a Thai woman, a Vietnamese person, or some guy from Nebraska?

Helpp me. Hellp me please.
I have seen the glory of the Thai Bamboo Rat Snake. And I am suffering.
I’ve not kept snakes before - other creatures, yes, but not the Snake. And now I crave. The tiny face. The red-and-stripy. The dainty nose amongst leaf litter.
Can you tell me of them? Have you ever met them, and caught the beadiness of their gaze with yours?
*cheering* Bamboo ratsnakes!!

I have indeed met these guys! Never owned one, but they used to be more common than they are now and they're pretty awesome. You can still find captive-bred ones if you look for them!
These are intermediate-level snakes, but they are doable if you're committed. If you want one, you can make it work as long as you prepare thoroughly beforehand! There are two big husbandry notes with them. The first is that they cannot get too hot. They do not tolerate high heat well at all. Their hotspot can be set to 80F, but it must never get above that. The good news is that's a good range to use a heat mat with - heat mats don't raise your ambient temperature, but will provide a warm spot, just make sure it's plugged into a thermostat. You should always turn their heat off at night. The second note is that their humidity has to be high. About 70% during the day and spiking to 90% at night is what they do best with.
It's also worth noting that these are smaller snakes and they don't tolerate handling super well. You can tame them, but they'll always be a bit nervous and flighty.
They're super cool pets! Tricky, but rewarding.

Finally got the new cages for the bamboo rats, so did a lot of *shudder* reorganizing and moved Rowan, Robin, and Ridley into their new digs last night. Setups are really bare since I don’t have any soil on hand at the moment. Gonna mix some up later today and get to decorating. Plants will have to wait until I get the LED strips in there, but all in good time.

I'm Chinese-American, so I'm curious what are some cool Chinese snakes that you love?
I'd love to share! There are well over 100 snakes native to China - so much amazing diversity!!
You can't make a list of iconic Chinese snakes without including the white-lipped pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris)! These awesome arboreal vipers are known for a stunning natural blue phase that can occur along with the more typical green.

I'm very partial to wolfsnakes, and my favorite is the Oriental wolfsnake (Lycodon capucinus). Unlike most other venomous colubrids, these guys aren't rear-fanged but have enlarged front teeth - that's why they're called wolfsnakes, because those big teeth means they have a face shape that looks kinda like a muzzle.
Tumblr media
I love Guangxi cat snakes (Boiga guangxiensis)! These guys are little tree snakes with big heads and huge eyes adapted for hunting small prey in the dark!
Tumblr media
Red bamboo ratsnakes (Oreocryptophis porphyraceus) are the loves of my life. Unlike many other snakes, these guys prefer cooler temperatures, so they're often found in higher altitudes where it's cooler.
Tumblr media
False cobras (Pseudoxenodon karlschmidti, also called bamboo cobras) are so so stinkin' cool! They're not cobras at all, they just have hoods to mimic them. And they do a great job!
Tumblr media
China has lots of keelbacks, but my favorite is the tiger keelback (Rhabdophis tigrinus)! These guys are a rare example of a snake that is actually poisonous (and they're venomous, too)!
Tumblr media
The false viper (Pseudagkistrodon rudis) is a viper mimic. They're not venomous, but they flatten out their heads to mimic vipers!
Tumblr media
Beauty ratsnakes (Orthriophis taeniura) are some of the most beautiful snakes in the world! They're very sassy and absolutely stunning.
Tumblr media
The blue-lipped sea krait (Laticauda laticaudata) is one of the coolest sea snakes out there. Sea kraits are sea snakes, but they're not restricted to life solely in the water like sea snakes in the genus Hydrophis are, and will come on land to do things like shed, bask in the sun, and lay eggs.
Tumblr media
Finally, Achalinus, the genus of odd-scaled snakes! Their scales don't overlap, they all lay separately, which lends them a very unique appearance!
