Completing the triptych - Auditorium Theatre mosaic 3 - yet more of the 350 million hand-laid tesserae. Why is a floor like this, as relatively simple as the pattern may be, so much more attractive and photogenic, and soothing, than something similar in a more uniform material, say concrete or linoleum? Well, it’s multifaceted (pun intended) but it’s due in no small part to the fractal distribution and the handmade quality of it, tapping into our deep seated affinity for scale and our evolutionary bias for social congregation.
