the "you won't fail again. i won't let you." was honestly the most caring and comforting line i've heard in the podcast. it doesn't absolve arthur of his colossal fuck up, it just accepts it and tells him that john will not allow him to cross that line again. what better safeguard against something of that magnitude than a literal voice in your head who can and will ensure that you do not get lost in yourself?

#i'm not wording shit properly the line just hit me and I'm still just. sitting here and Pondering #arthur is afraid to have responsibility of that magnitude again he's afraid to have someone's wholehearted trust and belief in him #because he really‚ really fucked up and got his daughter killed by his own negligence EVEN though he was warned by tess even though he -#had WEEKS of advance notice to clear his schedule for the evening and mentally prepare himself to spend time away from his music #and he still messed it up #but john's just given him an actual safeguard against him getting lost in his head again #can't get away from the entity who lives in your mind and also has a hand to physically shock you if you're unresponsive to his voice #as we've seen john already do so for arthur by slapping him when he was entranced #it's really a very good set up. i want one too #but yeah that was just...#it was such a moment of unselfish caring and empathy from john because yeah he's not gonna let them fail #he's got his own ass to be worried about after all #but he didn't need to comfort or reassure arthur by cutting to the heart of the matter in two short sentences #it's just... they're just very good #malevolent #malevolent podcast #hits extra hard because of my personal hc that arthur is aro. i'm also totally not projecting onto him or anything it's fine #e speaks
