it's not about franz hopper, it's not about the men in black, it's not about carthage. all of that stuff is just set dressing to provide a basic explanation for why the supercomputer and xana are here in the first place. it's not about the past, it's about the present, it's about the five kids and their lives, their relationships, their struggles and their fight against xana. and I don't want a reboot that loses sight of that in favour of fleshing out a backstory with details that really don't matter.

after a long break I'm finally back to working on the chronicles, and I'm now up to book 3 chapter 15. the end feels so close yet so far.
I fell off it for a few reasons but mostly because I was getting bored with the story and it felt like a chore trying to get through it. even just doing a single chapter takes a long time (rightfully so, translation shouldn't be rushed) and combined with a plot that wasn't holding my attention, it was hard to motivate myself to keep going. taking a break was good, and seeing the state of the currently available release, the job really needs to be done. but hey, I have until september to make it before the 10-year anniversary window closes (aaaaghhhh)
some spoilers ahead
and it's a shame because I did really enjoy books 1 and 2. they were a nice cosy story about the gang recounting their story and then beginning to unravel the mysteries of the hermitage and anthea's disappearance, all while xana is working to get closer to them and infiltrate the group, being very careful with the information he chooses to reveal so as not to tip them off or give them an advantage.
then book 3 comes along and it starts off ok. but if I could point to the spot where things took a nosedive, I think it was when xana showed up in humanoid form. there's something not good about the characters thinking of xana as this dangerous, merciless, emotionless computer program that's out to kill them, and xana acting all powerful and evil, but then he just starts dumping exposition and giving his enemies useful information seemingly only to move the plot along. it was weird when he was like "I could kill you right now, I don't even care" to ulrich and then they just go on a gay little stroll around the city together and xana helpfully explains more things with an evil smirk on his face.
it's also around that same time the gang gets split up and there are lots more other characters involved, a lot of them either completely new, or existing characters who've been changed a hell of a lot. and I get it but it feels a bit messy, and the darker tone is hampered by caricature characters.
I don't have much of an issue with the overall plot, I think it's mainly just the characterisation that could have used work. also the handling of the abusive parent stuff uhhhhh
anyway I wouldn't say the books are bad, I just wish they were better :B and at least every cl sequel/adaptation manages to get jim right

I've made a few changes to my bedroom over recent months, it's felt really good to make myself a space full of things I like - namely pink, cats and dolls. Sooo here are some new photos <3
A few months ago my parents decided to replace all the carpet upstairs, so I asked if I could get pink in my room. I love how it turned out! I also repainted the accent wall from dark blue to this pinkish red colour, and found curtains to match. I was on the lookout for a new pink or red bedspread too but none took my fancy, then I saw this cat-themed one in a store window and went for it.
I've had two of these display shelves for a while, and I just replaced my smaller one with a third large one. Now my books can reclaim the bookshelf and I have more room to display my collection.
At my desk, I've entered my pink gamer girl era. Except my PC isn't very good. I was happy to find a vertical mouse in pink, my wrist has felt a lot better after switching from a regular mouse. It's also really cool having a full desk mat! It looks nice and I can move my mouse and keyboard around without scraping the desk.

Bookshelf! I've been buying a lot of books lately. I ran out of room a while ago so I made some extra inset shelves for the left-hand side. Also the home of my plushies and cat statues.
First display shelf has a lot of small cat figurines, Miraculous dolls I got partway through customising before losing steam, Ever After High and DC Super Hero Girls.
Then there's the new shelf, which I've only had for a few days so I'm still deciding what I want the display to look like. There's Code Lyoko stuff, Monster High, Rainbow High and my favourite Ever After High characters who get their own shelf.
And finally, the Barbie display. It's mostly movie dolls which I collected as I was growing up and the movies were coming out, plus a few I got as an adult, and some newer releases. The not-Lego Dreamhouse was so fun to build, it's unfortunate it was too big to fit on the shelf so I had to remove the back half 😥

I finally got around to working on book 3 and I have to say, as weird as the chronicles can get sometimes, I think they did a really great job with the xana possession storyline. (tw for possession/loss of autonomy)
getting to see the gradual progression of xana needing to figure out how to pilot a human body, then how to navigate among other humans and act convincingly like one. and gosh darn these human emotions, why do I care about this person/thing? there's this intense scene where xana kidnaps one of the lyoko warriors and possesses them too (and I'm so happy with how the revised translation of that came out), so then xana is possessing two people at once and is able to impersonate the lyoko warrior so well it only attracts minimal suspicion. the two host bodies didn't get to interact much "on screen" in the end but the details we did get about their interactions were pretty cool, like there's clearly something up with the way they're both acting so in sync, almost like they can read each other's minds, but no one can quite put their finger on it.
I think the written medium just lends itself better to this kind of story (xana hiding the possession and masquerading as the host human) than the TV show ever could, given how we can see what's going on in the minds of the characters. and I guess I'm so accustomed to possessions being a thing in the show that I kinda take them for granted, but the novels really got me invested and thinking about how this would affect both the victims and the people around them, what it would feel like to find out that your mortal enemy has returned and had been using your friend as a vessel for some time, right under your nose. and for both the victims to have lost their autonomy and those days of their lives.
I'm having a hard time putting it into words but it really is one of my favourite story arcs so far and I think it was executed well. I'm a bit bummed that I only have a few chapters left before the possession stuff ends, but it was good while it lasted.

~10 years later I'm doing a (hopefully) final edit of the chronicles, and only just now discovering that the official french translation cut out a bunch of stuff? a lot of it is relatively minor, just some extra details here and there
but they also completely cut jim out of the hospital scene in book 2 and I think that's unforgivable

I tried to use the inches side of my ruler to measure the finished pattern but I ended up using an online converter anyway because I look at the ruler and think "what on earth are these increments"

It sucks when you take a class on a particular subject and you know it'll be useful, or it's something you could be passionate about, but it was taught to you in such a terrible way you didn't really learn anything. Maybe you pick up some bits and pieces but they're all disconnected so you never get the bigger picture, you have all these facts but no real understanding. And then you need to do an assignment on it so you try your best to connect the dots between these disjointed facts but you never really get it and it just makes you frustrated and you grow to resent the thing, no matter how good it might actually be.

I was just out shopping and I saw a couple of little girls getting excited about seeing Miraculous dolls. One picked up a box and started gushing to her mum about the show. Then another kid walks past the aisle, stops and gasps, strokes a box lovingly and then keeps walking. It was just really nice to see such joy freely and openly expressed.

when I think about garage kids I've generally just thought of ulrich as having supersprint, and that tends to be his only power in the fics I've read as well. we don't see him use triplicate in the pilot but I do wonder if he had it at that stage, and what sort of use he could make of it on earth

I could put a note on that netflix live action post saying yes I've seen evolution, but also it gives me a laugh every time someone comments to inform me that it exists when I've been complaining about it for the past 2 years or so

the odd/aelita comic post was my most popular post of last year. I have thought about making more posts for other characters/pairings but I don't have good scans of the last two comics. there aren't really any odd/aelita moments in them, but they're where a lot of the yumi/ulrich moments are, for example. idk. someday I'll get my hands on that magazine and I'll get those scans, dammit
