We are flooded with memes about how it's not the bit that hurts the horse.. it's bad hands... become a better horseman. I can't argue with this.. but there are some things to clear up. Firstly bad hands on a bit are far worse than bad hands on a halter. This isn't supposition, it has been scientifically proven. A horses mouth is by far more sensitive than the nose. Secondly, anyone who speaks of horsemanship as a instant switch has no horsemanship skills. It is a journey. .. Ray Hunt was asked why he has riders ride in rope halters for his clinics. .his answer was simply ' only a few riders have hands kind enough for a bit.' Which brings me to another point... those telling people to be better horsemen... how do you assess your horsemanship level.. of you can't get it done in a halter.. you haven't earned the right to try i a bit. ..and once you master it in a halter you start wondering why you need to go there. . Some need to progress to a bridle for their discipline. . And that's great..others change their whole outlook. .
