ciao-corpi:
Can we discuss about how Kaito’s phobia of fish is never explained but used only as a huge joke?
Yes, Ichthyophobia is a weird phobia but it’s still a fear! Why does no one take it seriously (especially Kaito’s mom, how dare she tell Aoko her son’s fear for payback?)? I have a mild masklophobia (fear of mascots) but my friends do their best to warn me when a mascot is right behind me and keep me away from them.
I know Kaito’s fear is supposed to be a a comic relief, but come on! It’s not funny/entertaining to poke at somebody’s fears.
( Hope you don’t mind if I make this a new post, because I’m happy to hop on discussing, but it might be better to not derail from the post you responded to. )
First thing to say in regards to Kaito’s dislike of fish (which, as presented in the manga, is also a mild phobia that mainly causes discomfort and avoidance) is that he got it from Gosho. As in: Gosho himself doesn’t like fish, so he wrote Kaito as also not liking fish. (And I think Gosho didn’t like fish because he didn’t like eating it or removing bones or something like that, but I can’t find a source for that outside of my memory atm. Tempted to say it’s also ‘recent’ and from the 30th anniversary book or such.) So, from a writing standpoint, it’s Gosho making a trait of his worse and using it with Kaito for the sake of comedy, possibly based on how he feels about fish himself even if he wouldn’t react the same as Kaito in real life.
And, as MK was originally almost pure comedy and gag to begin with (outside of the very obvious dramatic story elements), it’s not surprising that a mild fear is treated like a joke. It’s mean-spirited, yes, but a lot of comedy back then was like that. As much as the style has changed today, I can’t imagine the reacts being written quite as badly, now, though the fact that the Sun Halo still had Kaito flipping skirts doesn’t entirely rule out the fish fear abuse coming up again. A-1 didn’t help when they brought it back in a modern setting, either, but they at least made it clear he wasn’t comfortable. While some people may have laughed at the scene, it’s not really a moment made where everyone would be expected to laugh at the reaction. Especially not when compared to the expressions used during that scene in the manga. (Where the entire situation was ridiculous anyway, with Aoko bringing a giant fish to school to scare Kaito.)
...Basically, due to the style of the manga originally, it was never treated as a serious phobia. Which might speak for Gosho’s experiences with disliking fish himself, who knows. I do wonder if he wrote it as if it’s supposed to be really silly and to be made fun of because everyone thought the same around him and he internally knew it was silly and irrational. Could speak of a lot of emotional problems to go with ones already present in Japan and societies as a whole. It hasn’t actually been brought up in the manga since... Hustler vs Magician? Way back in chapter 13, which was in 1988? (Before that, even, since that chapter was originally written as the second chapter...) That’s the last time I remember, anyway, with Aoko’s fish panties. The mention of an aquarium was a surprise in Sun Halo, but if it’s starting to be treated more seriously as ‘just an aversion’, then Kaito choosing to offer to go there shouldn’t be bad. It wasn’t even focused on for a laugh, not even as the option they go with at the end of the case.
I don’t take issue with Gosho’s portrayal of it, due to the circumstances, but I do dislike how fandom tends to use the phobia when they should know better. If it’s used for comedy in a gag manga, that doesn’t transfer over well at all when you try to do the same in a more serious writing format.
