Fall 2017 Week 5 thoughts
Yowamushi Pedal New Generation- This week was another round of build-up for the much anticipated Inter High. I wish they would've only taken an episode to prepare for the Inter High. So far the pacing of this season has been far better than the last ones, so I hope that they don't relapse into that sluggish pace when the Inter High starts. But even with my reservations, I still enjoyed the episode, especially the reappearance of Best Boy Sugimoto.
Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records- How far this show has come in just a few episodes impresses me. I 'm actually excited for the next episode and I never would have expected that of this show. I'm looking forward to see what happens with the queen. It's a good thing, though, that new characters are being added because I can see the show getting stale with only the preexisting character dynamics.
Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine- Let me just say, I wholeheartedly love this show. It's not laugh out loud funny, but I always find myself chuckling and smiling along with the show. I find it relaxing and this week's episode was no exception. Prince Leonhard's efforts at studying were adorable and there were plenty of goofy moments to go around. They even added some mystery surrounding Heine. Just what is his past? I'm looking forward to the journey to that answer.
Sakurada Reset- Well that was a drastic change of tone. With last week's violence and darker tone, I was expecting something much different from the slow story about "purity" that I got. Now the episode itself wasn't horrific, it had some decent points and I appreciated how it wrapped everything up in the end, but I was far more interested in others things.  Like what's with the teacher? What's with that girl with the glasses? What's with that girl that died? What's with our main characters? This week's "client" even pointed some of this out. The main problem this week was that the episode was boring enough to allow me to feel that way.
Kabukibu!- Glad to see that the kabuki group managed to get through their performance and gain a new actor! However, they have another challenge to face immediately after: the drama club. The pacing for this episode was a lot quicker than past episodes. A lot happened and I really wasn't expecting the first performance and the drama club battle to be resolved all in one episode. It wasn't rushed, though. There really was no need to linger on this part anyway, and it is rewarding to see the kabuki club accomplish things long before the very end of the series. My only problem is that Akutsu got much more unlikable in this episode. He isn't the kind of character I particularly enjoy but having him be even more rude and give the stuck-up jerk character reason to laugh at the group didn't help his standing with me.
Seikaisuru Kado- I wish they could just pick between 2d or 3d animation. That stuck out to me again this episode. The episode itself was an interesting step forward in the plot. While most of the episode was just "oh no, what shall we ever do?", the resolution completely made up for it. I was caught offguard, I didn't expect that at all. I loved it, mostly because it was essentially a middle finger to the UN. The only problem I have with this episode is how "good" the Japanese bureaucracy is. I would've liked a bit more division, so that it would be closer to how they would probably act. Also, I've noted that we still haven't really gotten any character development, so at this point I'm going to watch this focusing only on the plot.
Boku no Hero Academia- Ah, tournaments arcs. They take me back. But before we get back into the action with the 1v1 fights, this episode's here to give a bit of set up and cool down from the last episode. We got Todoroki's backstory this week and I was impressed by how Yuki Kaji did. I generally dislike most of his roles, but he's been doing well in a role that isn't a cliché, always shouting shounen protagonist. I'm glad they kept the goofy parts of these chapters also. SHINSOU VS MIDORIYA HYPE!
Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2- Allow me to start this off by saying that I really only watch this show for its action, art, animation, direction, and voice acting. The majority of its story and character writing is pretty mediocre in my opinion, with a few exceptions here or there. I've been having a great time with the second season overall because the quality of the things I like about it have increased dramatically, as well as the fact that the pacing is actually very good this time around. Sadly, this episode was a bit of a step down animation quality-wise from the previous one, with the CG colossal titan being a good example of this. Seriously, why did they do that? On the other hand, the direction for the episode was pretty great. What they did with the wind and flags signifying the shifts in the scene was fantastic.
Alice to Zouroku- Disappointingly, it turned out to be a recap episode this week. I thought it was an interesting choice to have the voice cast participate though.
Atom: the Beginning- This episode disappointed me a bit because of the lack of action, but the hints to the overarching plot lessened the disappointment. We might have our heroes getting involved with some sort of conspiracy further down the road. I'm mostly neutral towards this episode, because it's a fairly by the book school festival episode. Glad to see they didn't attempt to shoehorn in fanservice. That would look really weird in this art style.
