X The First Duel X

You open the door to the night and see a group of men, all with weapons.

You take in the group. A man with a helmet on and two lumps on each shoulder, two swords are visible.

'He's tall and wide, maybe slow,' You think.

Moving on, you see a man with his hair back, a mask covering his lower face, and one sword, as far as you can see anyway. A wild-looking man, his hair poking out, carrying two swords at his sides. Another man with swords on his back. Definitely slower.

There are more men, but you take in who you assume is their leader.

A long-haired man dressed in blue, a jacket slung over his shoulders. Following the jacket downwards, you see a sword by his side.

Flicking your gaze to his face, it seems he was also sizing you up.

You see your woodcutting axe on the ground. Stepping further outside, you pick it up and rest it on your shoulder.

"So, what are we doing?"

The leader speaks up, “Y/l/n Y/n, our ideals match, I believe there is a spot for you with us.”

“Oh? And who are you?”

“We are the Itto-ryu. We care nothing for schools or styles, and we use any kind of weapon. Our only aim is to win.”

‘Simply win,’ You think, giving a slight nod of approval.

But, “Aren’t you the people destroying other dojos?”

The leader speaks with some determination, “We will destroy all the schools and unite them in one. You are the founder of your style and the only one alive. Its death depends on you.”

He steps forward taking off his jacket, “We believe in fighting one against one. If you wish, I’ll be your opponent.”

He draws his sword. It’s different: seemingly one all one piece, all black with only a white wrapping around the handle.

You purse your lips and stretch. You glance at him, he doesn’t even tense.

Sliding your hand up the axe shaft, you bring it to your side.

“Well, I’m obviously not prepared. How about some food first before I die.”

You motion inside, “Would you like some too?”

You think he won’t move as he just stands there, blade drawn. But he comes, passing you into your house. You follow, closing the door behind you. You slide the axe into your sash and make sure all exits are sealed as you get your ingredients and sword.

With everything ready, you lay your sword beside you and start a fire. Adding more than enough wood, the Itto-ryu leader doesn’t stop you.

“How many did you kill?” You ask, adding the ingredients.

“Eight.”

You grunt. ‘I should warn the rest.’

Fortunately, two of your students left Edo some time ago.

The food finishes cooking. Separating the food evenly, you leave the fire going. Neither of you speaks. Your eating is slow, despite the smoke slowly engulfing the room. Both your breaths grow slower and slower as the food dwindles, then you are done.

Your bowl flies at him and the leader cuts upward, slicing it in two. He brings his sword down as yours comes at him. Your blades catch on each other and you push him back. He stumbles back before getting lower and throwing your blade up. You jump back from his swing.

His men don’t come in.

You stare at each other, your eyes start itching and you continue.

With your blade above your head, you take a large step and swing down. He redirects away, moving to the side. He swings, cutting your arm as you dodge. You stab at him with one hand. He easily knocks it away and stabs at you, but you grab your axe and hook it onto his sword, pulling it away. You stab into his side.

He grabs your sword, stopping you from going further. He frees his sword and swings at you. You throw yourself to the floor, your grip tight on your sword. Rolling away, you stand with your sword free and his hand cut.

By now, all either of you sees is a shadowy outline of the other.

Your shoulder hurts and you notice the blood sticking to your clothing.

With a bitter smile, you think, ‘It's a shame I can’t kill him yet. His men might just hunt me afterward.’

Unbeknownst to you, he was thinking, ‘It’s a shame to kill him. He’d be a strong member.’

Letting out a small breath, you raise your axe and throw it with all your might. Predictably, he knocks it aside, but in the next instance, you ram into him. You send him flying to the ground, but don’t stick around to see it. You escape to a secret hole in your house and flee.

X The Second Duel X

Blood drips from your blade, falling onto the owner's body.

"Y/l/n Y/n," A familiar voice calls out.

You turn your gaze from the Itto-ryu member to their leader.

"Anotsu Kagehisa."

Your knowledge of his name doesn't seem to unsettle him at all. Just like before, he just stands there. However, he is tense this time, just slightly.

Ironically, this time, he had an axe with him.

"You don't have to take this personally, you know?"

You point at the body. Ever since your duel with Kagehisa, your house had been burnt down and you needed money. Luckily, some members of a certain group are wanted. Wanted men low bounties, but money is money.

"I didn't. My students knew what they were risking when they took up the sword."

Kagehisa doesn't seem to care as draws his weapons.

You sigh before cleaning your blade with the body's clothes. Standing, you are immediately on the back foot. Kagehisa's axe thunders down on you. You are barely able to raise your blade and shift it away from you before his sword slices into your stomach.

You kick him back, but he quickly recovers and is back on you.

His axe has more strength behind it and you choose to dodge them, only blocking if needed. His sword is more manageable: not enough strength behind it.

His axe passes by and you snake your arm around his. You stab at him, but he dodges and uses your own grip to try and throw you into his own thrust. Dropping to the floor, you flip him onto his back. Stabbing at him, Kagehisa rolls away, but his back is nicked.

You both rise to your knees. Your breathing is heavy, his is barely getting there. Flicking about, your eyes catch his axe on the floor.

Taking a deep breath, Kagehisa cuts you off, slashing down at your head. You parry it to the side and cut his chest. He follows with a cut to your jaw up to your left brow.

With your head thrown back, you see his sword coming down and reflexively catch his wrist. He punches you in the face. Despite being dazed, your grip tightens and you move your sword to do… something.

Kagehisa catches it in the same hand as before. Now you're both breathing heavily; blood is running into your mouth; his eyes are wide, and yours are as well.

You drop your sword. Kagehisa's eyes flick to it, barely seeing your hand coming at him. You grip his throat and slam him into the ground. Replacing your grip on his wrist with your foot, you bash him in the face repeatedly.

So focused on punching him, you are brought back as he stabs you in the side with your own sword.

You grab the blade with one of your hands, the other moving to choke him.

Kagehisa twists the blade.

"Fuck!" You yell.

Stomping on his wrist, you grab his sword and roll away.

You both stumble as you stand.

Blades outstretched, you inch toward each other.

Kagehisa lets out a yell and swings, quicker than before. Kagehisa's sword is heavier than yours, luckily, Kagehisa is only using his left hand.

Your swords collide and his new blade bounces off yours. You swing and he steps back. Metal glints and you retreat.

Sword raised, you take a stance; faster than he thought, you take a large step forward. Kagehisa braces his sword with both hands.

Kagehisa's blade crashes down twice against your sword. On the second hit, his sword proves its strength and breaks yours in two.

Following through, you slash down his chest.

Despite the moment, you pause.

'Fuck, that's more money,' You think, severely disappointed.

Someone lands in front of you. It's the face mask guy. …And he's trying to kill you.

Already tired, you take out a ball and throw it at him. The man cuts it and the ball explodes into smoke.

As they're distracted, you run off, pissed at the interruption, but strangely happy that such an opponent still lives.

X Midnight Meeting X

Two months pass before you meet again.

Kagehisa wakes up with your hand squeezing his throat. Feeling cold metal, he looks down and sees his own sword underneath his chin.

"That was a fun fight. How about another?" Your eyebrow twitches.

Kagehisa's throat swallows beneath your hand and you throw the sword aside.

He knocks your hand aside, surprising you. As you fall, he grabs you and throws you onto your back. His hands wrap around your throat and squeeze, stopping airflow. He brings you closer, fucking your gasping mouth with his tongue.

You grab onto his waist and grind his ass against your erection.

His breath stutters.

You punch him in his side and let's go with a puff of breath. You gasp before gripping his hair and pulling. Nipping his throat, you bite his collarbone when he tries to change positions.

Kagehisa hisses and fists your hair.

His back hits the floor before being turned over. He tries to push himself up, but you lay atop him.

You go to speak but are interrupted by a voice outside the room

"Master Anotsu, is everything alright?"

Calmly and steadily, Kagehisa says "I'm fine, you can leave."

Nothing is heard for a moment before they walk off. Their footsteps can barely be heard while you slide Kagehisa's clothes over his ass. His jaw clenches when you take off his underwear.

With a small bottle in hand, you whisper in his ear, "You can always call you men, you know?"

He looks over his shoulder at you. His eyes scream at you as if you meant to challenge him. You didn't.

Well, maybe just a little.

You pop the bottle open and let the contents flow out, falling a little above his ass and then between his cheeks.

Kagehisa shudders, feeling the warm oil drip down.

Gliding a hand up his leg, "Do you need me to go easy, Anotsu? Or…"

He whips his head back, hitting your nose. You recoil but remain atop him. You slam his face against the mats.

You swipe some of the oil off him, teasing his hole before lubing your cock.

Groaning, you push into Kagehisa. He croaks, clenching his fist. Yet, his lower half relaxes, letting you delve deeper.

Hilting inside him, your breaths match, slightly heavy. Kagehisa barely stops himself from making a sound as you grind into him.

A breathy smirk slowly makes its way onto your face. Raking your hand through his hair, you pull Kagehisa's head back. Pulling back, you slam into him, earning a low groan.

He glares at you and you take mercy on him.

Muffled moans, gasps, and the slapping of skin is quite loud, yet no one comes.

"I think it's bullshit," You say.

"Which part?" He asks, standing in the moonlight.

He stares at the tree or the moon. Honestly, you neither know nor care.

"All of it, Anotsu. Why would the Council of Elders hire you and the Itto-Ryu as instructors? Why would this, Ibane Kensui, their old instructor, even join you?"

"I told you. He wishes to foster true warriors before his death."

You snort and he turns.

Sitting up, your eyes flick down before turning to his face.

"Anotsu, I get wanting to pass on one's knowledge, but you need to remember. Your Itto-ryu is a band of criminals. Now I might not know all their crimes, but I am certain the Shogunate would rather have an old dying instructor teach their men, than such infamous criminals."

By the end of your reasoning, Kagehisa stands imposingly over you.

"Ibane Kensui sent his letter himself. His family was the official instructors of the Shogunate. He and Habaki Kagimura are officials of the Shogunate, I do not believe they would try to trick us."

"And your band of criminals?"

He grips your hair and forces you to look up.

"The Itto-ryu. The members can do what they want, but only if I permit them."

Your breathing grows heavy as you run your hands up his legs.

"Oh Anotsu, with your own permission, you robbed yourself of your dream, yet you refuse to see that."

Suddenly he is swept off his feet before landing on his back. You pin down his arms.

Kissing your way from his jaw, down his throat, "I'd rather not see my rival die a stupid death."

He flips your positions and the night continues.

~ The Fall ~

He's surrounded. He's tired from fighting so many foes, yet he only has a few bad cuts.

As if feeling your gazes, Kagehisa turns to see Makie, a friend of his, you believe. And you, donning a Kojo mask.

"I told you it was a trick, Anotsu." You and Makie jump down and the fighting begins anew.

The first dozen or so, you can remember how you kill them: A slashed throat; a stab into the heart or head, some through their eye or mouth; some go down from a single slash down their chest; there is one guy who is now without his head.

The more the enemy presses you, the more you have to splint your attention between the enemy and your allies. Kagehisa fights well alongside you two. You and Makie, not so much. Despite your skills, you spend a portion dodging some of her attacks. She too spends a bit adapting to your quick lunges, and as time goes on, savage fighting.

You believe you just split some guy's head down the middle with one of your attacks, but you move onto the foe before it can fully register.

The battle slowly turns into a daze.

…the daze disappears and your enemies are dead.

You realize your mask is askew and upon fixing it, you find a gash in the wood.

"Gunpowder…" Makie mutters.

And you hear the gunners' movements. Whipping around, they take aim and you throw a smoke bomb at their target.

Makie rushes to Kagehisa and the two disappear in the smoke just as a shot is fired. You throw another one at the gunners before being shot in your shoulder.

Makie dashes towards the enemies, hooking her weapon onto the building and swinging up.

With their vision obscured, she makes quick work of them.

All but one are dead. Kagehisa stalks over to Habaki Kagimura.

"Anotsu Kagehisa, you poor fool. Did you think the Shogun would let a man like you instruct his warriors?"

Kagehisa does not answer him, instead taking a stance.

Kagimura readies himself.

With a grunt, Kagehisa slashes at him, but Kagimura draws his sword to block it. Kagimura responds with his own attack which is also blocked. With a quick attack, Kagehisa steps out of his range, letting the sword pass him.

Closing the distance, Kagimura's blade binds with Kagehisa's, but Kagehisa disengages, spinning around him and getting a cut on Kagimura's hand.

Shocked for a moment, Kagimura recovers and cuts into Kagehisa's shoulder. …His cut doesn't go far as Kagehisa stabs him through his abdomen.

Yanking his sword out, Kagehisa's sword flashes in the crimson spray from Kagimura's body, slashing clean through him.

Habaki Kagimura stills for a moment, before falling to the ground, bisected at the waist.

With the fighting over, you rush to Kagehisa.

"It's time to go, Anotsu." Your eyes sweep over his injuries.

He ignores you, looking to see the Hundred Killer retrieving his weapons from a body.

"Hundred Killer… Thanks to you, I'm still alive," Kagehisa says.

"Well, I think we played a part in it as well." You motion to Makie.

He looks at you for a moment, "We'll leave."

Kagehisa picks up his axe as the Hundred Killer grins.

"You know," Hundred Killer starts. "I never want to see you walk away again… Anotsu Kagehisa."

Your eyes flick to Kagehisa's wounded and tired form, then to his immortal foe. You can hear Makie readying herself for what's next. Asano's girl seems unsettled by the way your mask looks as you turn your head, your hands gripping your sword.

"I see. Both of you, stay out of this." Kagehisa looks at you and Makie.

Kagehisa and Hundred Killer raise their weapons, circling each other before Kagehisa stabs at his face. The man knocks it away, swinging his other blade at him. The clash of their swords is loud in the valley of bodies.

You lose track of them for a moment as they rush into a building, still fighting. Their steps are loud and their grunts are even louder.

They come out of the building, slashing and cutting, nearly slipping on the bloody ground.

You let out a breath when Kagehisa gets cut across his back. Though he manages to knock a sword from Bundred Killer's hand, he is soon met with a cut down his chest.

Hundred Killer continues to get more hits on him as Kagehisa only gets one.

The two step back, catching their breath.

Hundred Killer goes to get back into the fight, but grits his teeth, groaning as blood spills from him.

With a yell, Kagehisa rushes him. The man dodges under his attack and slashes him across his pelvis. Kagehisa nearly falls, struggling to keep himself up. He goes for an attack but is too slow, getting cut twice before falling to his knees.

Hundred Killer raises his sword to finish the gasping, kneeling man.

"Fuck this!" You hiss.

A quick look is given to Makie before, with a wide lunge, you cut off the Immortal's hand. Your hand starts to feel numb and your sword continues its trajectory, getting stuck in the bloody soil.

"Manji!" Asano's girl screams.

You ignore them. Letting go of your sword, you grab Kagehisa and throw him over your shoulder.

Hearing the clash of metal, you glance, seeing Makie holding Manji off.

You rush to the forest. Once you reach it, you keep running until you no longer can, at which you let Kagehisa down.

"Did someone send you?" Kagehisa rasps, looking up with tired eyes.

"Did someone send me?" You say incredulously.

"There aren't many left to send me. I came because I believed it was a trick."

You kneel by his side and try to assess the wounds, but your mask obscures them. Yanking it off, you wince, dropping it. Looking over, you remember the gunshot as your shoulder bleeds.

Looking back at Kagehisa, you see his gaze move from your wound to you.

With one good hand and one shaky one, you rip any clean clothing you have off. You have to forcefully help him, as he tries to fend off your help.

With a huff, you sit next to him, "We'll wait here for Makie. Not unless you think any of the shogun's men lived?"

You look over at him. Kagehisa stares up through the leaves, the dying sunlight dances on his pale face. It's not the type of stare of contemplation, but something you haven't seen before.

Taking a guess, you hold his hand, squeezing with what strength you have.

With great apprehension, you speak, "I am… glad you are not dead… Kagehisa."

For a moment, he does nothing. Then, Kagehisa sighs, his shoulders slouch, and he squeezes your hand back, still staring at the dimming sky.
