Parigi, 22 agosto. Sarebbe davvero bello se invece che verso la catastrofe ambientale pressoché certa, il mondo scoprisse una nuova stagione come quella prefigurata da “Echo2” di Philippe Parreno (con la collaborazione di Tino Sehgal, Arca, Nicolas Becker, Bronze) installazione che troneggia sotto la imponente rotonda della Bourse de Commerce di M.sieur Pinault. Il sole (quello vero) che gioca con il monolite elettronico di Parreno dove compare, fantasmatica, “Annelee” (il personaggio virtuale del film “Anywhere Out of the World). L’aria fresca insufflata meccanicamente invade l’enorme spazio espositivo e grazie all’intelligenza artificiale viene ricreato un microclima ideale ma del tutto artificiale. Compare persino la neve, quella che depositata formava i ghiacciai che tra poco saranno anch’essi un lontano ricordo. Chissà che sia poi davvero questo il nostro destino…

Week 10 - Graphic Design
The most interesting ideas of typography in my opinion are comics, manga, video games and anime. Now, I do not watch, play, or read these content as much, but I do love how they look and the design of this style. The manga and anime are heavily influenced by Japanese culture and the style of the lettering. Style characteristics were along the lines of flossy hyperrealism, vivid colors, dense kinetic compositions, speed lines, and strong contours. Japanese themes and characteristics are over the top expression of emotion, wide eye, baby-faced but overly sexulized features of young women. The Ghost of the Shell series is an example of the graphic design power in anime. This style of shows are also influenced by the Futurists with how the people look like and how enhanced the people were. Looking at the many different visual elements of anime, it shows how sleek, gleaming textureless surfaces are a very prominent part in “digital aesthetics.” Technology started to play a major role especially in Japanese anime in shaping the looks of the characters. The Ghost of the Shell franchise was bought by two artists, an Algerian artist Philippe Parreno and Frenchman Pierre Huyghe, and they started “No Ghost Just A Shell” or the Annlee project. These two artists created works that used Annelee, who is the protagonist of the “No Ghost Just A Shell,” and build layers to the empty shell of an anime. Their poster for the series has very blocky letters, the shell symbol in bright red and yellow colors, and Annllee showing powerful expressions of sorrow and fear on her face. Focusing on the girl, this poster is an excellent example of Japanese anime. The shell symbol is recognizable in the United States as it is the symbol for the Shell oil company.

What Ants Can Teach Us About Traffic Jams

You have to admire the grace of ants on the move. No matter how many of them are streaming toward their destination, there's never a hold up. No fender benders. And, unlike humans, they know how to pull off a proper lane merge.
There are many fascinating facets of ant life, but none may pack a more practical lesson for us than their gift for avoiding traffic jams.
A new research paper published this week in the journal eLife reveals how ants keep traffic flowing by changing their behavior to meet changing conditions.
If traffic is at a trickle, for instance, ants will space themselves out and behave more individualistically. But when it's bumper-to-bumper — or in this case, antennae-to-abdomen — they coalesce into a single stream that just keeps flowing.
For their experiments, researchers from the University of Toulouse and the University of Arizona focused on Argentine ants, critters that frequently move from colony to colony depending on the proximity of food sources.
As Annelee Newitz writes in Ars Technica, "Their ability to move quickly in large groups is what helped them swarm on my cats' food so fast — and it's why they were able to pack up their eggs and flee the flood in my backyard like well-trained disaster workers."
Tapping into the Argentine ants' knack for fast commutes, the researchers built bridges connecting their colonies. The bridges varied in width from a fifth to three-quarters of an inch. The colonies, too, were of different sizes, ranging from 400 to more than 25,000 ants.
Essentially, researchers built a new infrastructure system for the ants, connecting their biggest cities to the smallest hamlets. Then they sat back and monitored the traffic.
And surprise, surprise, even when those narrower bridges reached near-capacity, there were no 20-ant pile-ups. Indeed, there was nary a fender-bender.
Traffic remained steady regardless of how overburdened the infrastructure because they were able to adjust to the ebb and flow of road conditions. At some point, when the bridges got really busy, ants moved not so much as individuals but rather like water flowing in an ever-constant stream.
"When density on the trail increases, ants seemed to be able to assess crowding locally and adjusted their speed accordingly to avoid any interruption of traffic flow," the authors note in a news release. "Moreover, ants restrained themselves from entering a crowded path and ensured that the capacity of the bridge [the maximum value of the flow allowed by the bridge width] was never exceeded."

The lesson for humans? The traffic conundrum — one of modern life's seemingly unsolvable puzzles — may lie in our inability to adjust our driving habits for the good of the whole. You've probably noticed it on your own commute to work. Driving is fun when there are few cars on the road — a lane-change here, a little acceleration there. Then traffic slows to a crawl. And yet, some impatient driver still acts like he's alone on the road, tailgating and constantly jockeying between lanes. It doesn't buy that driver any more time, but instead further entangles traffic.
Ants, being the ultimate collectivists, don't have time for yahoos.

The research also suggests that infrastructure projects, like the ever-widening of highways, may never free us from the plague of traffic jams. As long as we motor along with our own agendas, no matter how many other people are on the road, we'll always end up in a traffic snarl.
Indeed, less space may actually be a good thing. It leaves less room for individual choice and forces us to take a page from the driving manual of ants.

Rumours were circulating on social media on Wednesday, via The Scottish Sun, that Celtic had sacked striker Leigh Griffiths, but he almost instantly put the rumours to bed with a two-word Twitter post, much to the relief of Bhoys fans.

The Scotland international has been away from the squad for the past few months as he battles off-the-field issues, but he appears to be closing in on a return to action as the season nears its close.
The Celtic Text Twitter page posted a record of the 28-year-old’s goals and assists tally for the Scottish Premiership champions on Wednesday, and the attacker responded with two words: “And counting”.
That certainly put to bed any stories that the Glasgow giants had decided to axe Griffiths, who has become something of a huge Parkhead favourite in the past few years.
Many Bhoys supporters were clearly relieved after the update from their striker which suggests he is here to stay, with one saying “thank goodness”, and another echoing that sentiment by adding “I can breathe again”.

The Next Closet ging op pad tijdens Amsterdam Fashion Week. De openingsshow van David Laport deed menig modehart al sneller kloppen met de prachtige designs in zoete kleuren als roze, lichtgeel en het blauw dat aan de lucht in Zuid-Frankrijk doet denken. Maar naast deze grote designer raakten wij nieuwsgierig naar het aanstormend talent bij de Lichting 2018, de selectie alumni aan de verschillende modeacademies in Nederland. We waren vooral ook benieuwd naar de mensen die naar deze show kwamen kijken. We namen de proef op de som en spraken enkele inspirerende fashion liefhebbers in prachtige outfits over wat zij denken over vintage en fast fashion.
Wat zie jij er leuk uit! Heb jij nu iets vintage aan?
“Ja, dit sjaaltje is vintage. Ook al mijn sieraden zijn van mijn oma of haar zus.”
Heb je favoriete vintage winkels?
“Ja, ik houd van marktjes afstruinen, maar ook op vakantie ga ik steevast op zoek naar de leuke vintage kledingwinkels. In Amsterdam is het best uitgemolken en dat vind ik wel jammer. Dit sjaaltje heb ik namelijk uit een klein winkeltje in Zuid-Frankrijk.”

“De IJhallen! Daar sta ik zelf ook vaak. Ik gooi namelijk nooit mijn kleding weg.”
Vind je dat slow fashion genoeg gestimuleerd wordt?
“Wel, eerst moet de fast fashion productie en consumptie omlaag, dan pas kunnen we groeien met vintage verkoop. Ook associëren we vaak slow fashion met dure prijskaartjes. Dat beeld moet eigenlijk veranderen.”

Annelee: “Ik vind het leuk dat we met vintage items een heel unieke look kunnen maken. Met fast fashion krijg je al snel het effect dat iedereen er hetzelfde gaat uitzien.”
Fay: “Eerlijk gezegd heb ik heel mijn leven in de fast fashion gewerkt en geshopt. Ik heb pas recent de omkeer gemaakt. Ik vind het leuk om items te kopen die je leven lang meegaan.”
En shoppen jullie vaak?
Fay: “Ik heb al 6 maanden niets gekocht. Maar als ik het wil kopen, dan stel ik mezelf de vraag: “Is it for a season or a reason?”
Annelee: “Mijn lijfspreuk is die van Vivienne Westwood: “Choose well, buy less, make it last.”

“Ja! Mijn hoed is vintage en ik draag juwelen van mijn moeder. Maar dat is heel nieuw voor mij, dat vintage en bewust shoppen.”
Wat heeft je geïnspireerd om meer vintage en slow fashion te shoppen?
“Je komt er op een gegeven moment achter dat de kwaliteit toch niet is wat het moet zijn. En ook, hoeveel we gebruiken en kopen is echt belachelijk. Sinds mijn studie heb ik deze omkeer gemaakt.”
Koop jij sweatshop free? Met andere woorden, kleding die enkel onder goede arbeidsomstandigheden is geproduceerd?
“Ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat duurzame mode best nieuw is voor mij. Ik koop dus wel nog af en toe wat uit de fast fashion ketens, maar ik koop het liefst alternatieve kleding van underground merken. Ik geef makkelijk 400 euro uit aan een mooi stuk waarvan ik echt weet dat de designer er heel veel tijd en ambacht in heeft gestoken.”

Jullie zijn ontwerpers. Wat betekent duurzaamheid voor jullie?
“Duurzaamheid is een heel interessant topic, vooral ook voor jongere groepen. Die zoeken echt naar unieke kleding en liefst zonder het label “tweedehands en oud”. Je wilt een vintage aankoop juist zien als een soort liefde op het eerste gezicht. Het is echt verliefd worden op een vintage stuk dat jij gevonden hebt.”
En wat betekent duurzaamheid in jullie ontwerpen?
Kalkidan: “In mijn eigen designs gebruik ik vooral herbruikbare materialen. Ik inspireer me op mijn Afrikaanse afkomst. De insteek is dat ik zoveel mogelijk gevonden objecten en materialen nieuw leven probeer in te blazen door het een nieuwe vorm te geven.”
Vinden jullie dat we alleen nog maar (tweedehands) designerkleding zouden moeten kopen?
Kalkidan: “Iedereen wil liever designerkleding, maar er zit een limiet aan de prijs. Ik heb op mijn leeftijd heus nog niet zoveel geld om alleen maar merken te kopen. Ik houd wel echt van vintage sportswear. Dat gaat lange tijd mee en blijft voor altijd een edgy coolness uitstralen.”
Anna: “Ik ben het daarmee eens. Al vind ik het ontzettend leuk om vintage designerjassen te scoren. Zo heb ik een tijdje geleden een vintage Burberry jas gekocht. Die jassen gaan altijd mee. De kwaliteit die je hebt van nieuwe designerspullen is eigenlijk hetzelfde als die van vintage jassen, want vroeger werd alles gewoon kwalitatief gemaakt. Ik vind het interessanter om één item te kopen per maand en dan weer twee maanden niets. Liever een duur en duurzaam stuk dan meerdere kleine aankopen waar ik minder veel aan heb.”
Is het wel een bewuste keuze om met duurzaamheid en designer items bezig te zijn?
Anna: “Nee, dit is echt iets wat te maken heeft met onze achtergrond als ontwerper. We willen graag unieke stuks, en fast fashion draagt iedereen. Je bent echt niet meer uniek. En als designer heb ik vooral geleerd om op details en afwerking te letten in ontwerpen. Ik kan wel fast fashion kopen maar dat gaat sowieso niet lang mee en is niet mooi afgewerkt.”
