Tumgik
#and like. wow. honestly? top tier foreshadowing
Tomura, taking off Father: See this face?
Tomura: Take a good, long look.
Tomura: Because this is the face that didn’t listen to a word you just said.

14 - Foreshadowing
But always, just as he was about to fall asleep, the other, darker thoughts came creeping back, and made him afraid to close his eyes. Finally he did sleep — a shallow doze filled with nightmares. He was back in Sheba's hut. But now its four walls were made of rock, dripping with water and slime. And Sheba was huge, her nose long and pointed, her hair greasy grey tails swinging like thick ropes around her grinning face, her eyes red and piercing. Strong Jonn and his mother stood there with him, but they made no move to help as the Witch bent towards him, closer and closer, till her face was all he could see and her breath scalded his cheeks. "If you are the only one afraid, skinny rabbit, you are the only one with sense," she croaked. And she opened her mouth to scream with laughter, but she had no tongue, and the inside of her mouth was as yellow and smooth as cheese. ROWAN OF RIN Ch 3 The Heroes
i was planning on doing one of sheba's prophesies because those are always 😘👌 idk theres something so fun and i guess also satisfying about having a cryptic riddle foretelling the future and having it slowly unfold over the course of the story
the fate's hand prophesy in Zebak is probably my favourite because i looooove the symbolism of the group as the hand and also what a cast of characters 😌💖
the plot arch of Travellers is also one of my favourites and big fan of the secret enemy prophesy too. big fan of all the themes of change to embody metamorphosis throughout the whole story!!!
i just did a maris art so i didn't want to use the prophesy in Keeper of the Crystal and honestly when i chose sheba i honestly was envisaging the one in Bukshah where she and unos were huddled in the hut with a raging fire and the whole intense atmosphere, piercing eyes of intent, her snarky wisdom.
but i ended up going with the original, the first, the beloved, probably for nostalgia lol. Rowan of Rin was my first rodda book but thats not the only reason it's one of my top tier favourites. i love its story and its themes of bravery and how the saviour of the village was not a mighty warrior, but a gentle and kind soul.
but oh my god before i started sketching i randomly remembered rowan's dream after visiting sheba and like. ive read this book a bajillion times okay. but i only jUST saw a parallel?? i dont think it's a coincidence??? but i remembered that sheba's eyes were described as piercing and red, and i remembered that because i was like woah thats intense. aND YOU KNOW WHO ELSE HAD RED EYES. THE DRAGON. i remember this only because of when i drew the dragon of the mountain that one time.
so i go back to look at the dream scene. obviously this whole scene kinda went over my head the first time because i was like. eight. give or take. but when i picked it up again when i was older, i quite liked how kinda whacky it was? and i was like wow this is the weirdest and truly the most dream ive ever read lmaoo. i was like wow rodda really wrote things that rowan experienced recently and was thinking about aND made it whacky and weird.
and something i always thought was the most weird was that sheba is described to have a mouth full of cheese, and i always took it as yeah. rowan gave her cheese. it's haunting him now lol. but now?? with my eyes opened??? cheese = food, stuck in her mouth. you know who else had food stuck in its mouth?? the dragon of the mountain.
i was intending of drawing the dream itself but it was going to be a whole thing lol so i just drew when rowan was helping the dragon hahaha but behold my madman red string connection parallels ✨
Tumblr media
He was back in Sheba's hut. But now its four walls were made of rock, dripping with water and slime.
mountain top cavern, snowy and icy and probably a bit gross
And Sheba was huge, her nose long and pointed, her hair greasy grey tails swinging like thick ropes around her grinning face, her eyes red and piercing.
ngl i've found this description to be a bit [raises eyebrows] because stereotypes, but now it's like. oh maybe big nose is actually just dragon snout.
sheba definitely has an intense gaze normally, but a red and piercing gaze is like the intimidating but pained and fearful gaze of the dragon.
i got nothing for her hair. could just be description for her. could be folded wings maybe. maybe the dragon of the mountain is an Eastern dragon type even.
Strong Jonn and his mother stood there with him, but they made no move to help
jonn is, of course, weak and pinned to the wall by this point and cannot help.
i don't think jiller is as literally relevant, but we can kinda say that she cannot help also because she had to stay behind to look after annad etc
the Witch bent towards him, closer and closer, till her face was all he could see and her breath scalded his cheeks.
drawing rowan's attention to the face, uh. divine? guidance towards the answer.
sheba's breath was hot like the dragon's fire breath.
"If you are the only one afraid, skinny rabbit, you are the only one with sense," she croaked.
im choosing to interpret this as like, his fear gives him pause and allows him to consider. he seeks knowledge, before he acts, in contrast to his elders who act first, know later. kinda like benefits of Deer In The Headlights mode O-O lmao
could also just be a reminder, even affirmation that he and he alone can solve the villages problem and save it from disaster
And she opened her mouth to scream with laughter, but she had no tongue, and the inside of her mouth was as yellow and smooth as cheese.
perhaps opening her mouth to cackle can parallel the dragon unhinging its jaw, looking like it's about to eat you whole, but doesnt
cheese stuck in mouth = animal bone stuck in mouth
..oh my god??? i actually think this is just my headcanon but at the end of Bukshah sheba says "that the medallion she gave [rowan] may look like base metal, but it is made of pure gold, and she expects it back the moment she returns. she says that you could not take her place in a thousand years, whatever you may think" via allun, and idk when it happened but i think i did in fact imagine that rowan would be the wiseman some day. due to his insight, his experiences, his level-headiness and stuff like that.
sheba could just be messing around, enforcing being a spiteful and jealous old woman, but just passing on the message that she wants the medallion returned.
but also. maybe she knows he's gonna take her place someday, and she is hinting at it to him. i would imagine this definitely going over his head at the time, since he's you know. a child. but who knows, he's pretty discerning. anyway
it could perhaps be argued that sheba gave rowan the dream alongside the map, but i doubt it. i choose to believe it's his own. maybe im grasping at straws here about it being a supernatural dream, but if it is,,,,,,,,, it could be just the beginning for rowan.

Episode 6
Wylan, your friends are dying and you're excited about the butterflies??? Top tier autistic representation honestly
Awwwwh Wylan, holy shit that's so fucking adorable. Speaking louder just so Jesper can hear you. You fucking sweetheart. But uh, Jesper can't hear you soz
Omg this is how we get Jesper backstory?? His mother!!! 😍
Ooh, Baghra knows. Or at least has her suspicions.
Oooh yes, morozova story time
Ooh yes Baghra, talk more about Mals family.
Oh cmon Mal. You kept going till you found Alina. Is Baghra really gonna have to spell it out?
Really Baghra, you stop the story there???
Wylan, don't you think they tried simply opening the door?? If tolya couldn't get it open what makes you think you can? Blow it the fuck up dammit
Oooooh, Tolya and Tamar backstory??? Wait no, hallucination? Interesting, the others had flashbacks, not fiction
Wylan, maybe don't put your face directly up to the small hole you just made into a room filled with poisonous air?? 😅
I love Jespers mother so much. I wish we got to see more of her
Huh, okay maybe Baghra doesn't know for sure. Otherwise opening that door would've gone differently
I know Mal and Alinas convos are supposed to be emotional but honestly I'm laughing everytime coz of all the foreshadowing 😂
THE KANEJ ARMY ARE WINNING. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING WINNING
This is exactly how I imagined the scene. Perfect. The question. The little tug. The hand in the face. The hesitation. But holy shit it hurts so much that it's not real. That Kaz doesn't get to experience it too. Why must you hurt me like this????
Omg yes, autistic hyperfixations for the win. You are a beautiful man Wylan.
Lol, Inej shoving it in her mouth before he can even say it might sound strange. She trusts him with her life 💚
Alright, Tolya is mama now, it's official
Omg Jesper, don't sound so surprised. You've literally told the man how intelligent he has how many times and you're surprised??
Oh Kaz, and Inej. Didn't see anything? Nice to see we're still denying all our feelings 😂
Wow, Mals better at denying shit than Kanej. You literally just closed the door that only a Morozova can affect. And you respond with 'you're lying'???
Wow that's rude, messing with a man's guns.
Oh I need Wylan to save them here, it's gonna be gorgeous
Absolutely love Jespers priorities, fixing his guns
Once again, Baghra is fucking amazing. She knew what needed to be done and she fucking did it
Okay that was not how I was expecting that to go. Damn, they really have a habit for meeting living saints 😅
Awwh, I am living for every single look between Wylan and Jesper 😍
Oooh, is this why they made Alina part Shu??? Did they think this far ahead, had all this planned out already????
Jesper?? Okay, why him? Coz he's a durast?
Shes using her first husband as a table????
Awwh, it is coz he's a durast, a terrible one apparently 😂
This is such a good Jesper episode. We get to see his mother, and he gets to be more comfortable being a durast
Omg, Tolya and Jespers look 😂
Omg, 'someone someday is gonna come sweep you off your feet' yes Nina, his name is Nikolai, and he will so brilliantly sweep Zoya off her feet 😍
Wow they got their priorities straight. You have to kill me Alina. Okay let's have sex.
Like yeah I get it, but it's still funny
Ah yes, nothing like pouring your dead mother bone dust onto the stump of your hand that she cut off with her dying breath.
Well fuck. Baghra did not see that one coming

Ranking Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure Songs (Part 1)
Here it is, the definitive (read subjective) tier list of the top 15 Tangled The Series songs. I’ve been listening to these daily, and now you can too!
Let’s get to it:
[see Part 2 for #11-15]
Tumblr media
10. With You By My Side
Harmonies for days, plagued by relentless forshadowing aka the best way to end season 2.
Pro: these 3 compliment each other so well vocally, chills every time
Con: heavy handed foreshadowing like we get it everyone will betray everyone but for now they’re happy
Rating: 8/10
Tumblr media
9. Buddy Song
Let me reiterate THE! BUDDY! SONG! SLAPS!👏 Stream these legends and their beautiful friendship
Pro: Hilarious, stellar melody, broadway-esque extravagance
Con: a plant is trying to eat them during this song
Rating: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
8. Next Stop, Anywhere
Ultimate peppy road trip music, especially the final chorus. You can’t get better than Cassandra singing while running with horses.
Pro: each chorus adds in another singer so by the end it’s all three of them and epic
Con: too much dialogue that shouldn’t be in the soundtrack version
Rating: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
7. View From Up Here
This song is the embodiment of being free and flying. It’s hard to put into words how this song makes me feel. Classic Disney vibes.
Pro: beautiful vocals and visuals, nostalgic feelings galore
Con: Rapunzel and Cass as singing birds
Rating: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
6. Let Me Make You Proud
Time for the best character, Varian, to make his solo debut. “Let Me Make You Proud” is when I first started taking this show seriously, and it was all due to Jeremy Jordan, Alan Menken, and Glenn Slater in this show-stopper.
Pro: that final high note, Varian’s singing voice
Con: I want more after the high note, song ends too quickly
Rating: 9/10
<Attention! You have reached the halfway point. Get ready for the S Tier.>
Tumblr media
5. Let Me Make You Proud (Reprise)
If the original version made me stop and pay attention to Tangled The Series, the reprise broke me. THIS SONG is only 1 minute long. One minute spent watching my favorite character transform from a plucky kid to a tragic villain. THEY SET THE MOMENT HE BREAKS TO THE MOST HEART-WRENCHING MUSIC AND I’M NOT OVER IT.
Pro: Jeremy Jordan held back nothing as Varian in this scene. This is the most emotion-filled and shocking song of the show
Con: 1 minute long, I can’t put it higher because of that
Rating: 9.5/10
Tumblr media
4. Crossing the Line
Did someone say epic orchestra? Nobody? Oh well, too late the horns are already here.
What’s great is this is technically Cassandra’s villain song, but it doesn’t play like any villain song before it. It’s building, unapologetic, and triumphant. This is Cassandra letting her walls fall and taking what she wants, consequences be damned. Is she right? No. Is she OOC for most of season 3? Possibly. Is it cathartic to watch her wreck two seasons worth of buildup and relationships? HECK YEAH!
Pro: bass boosted “If I’m burning a bridge let it burn!”🔥
Con: This is the one time I’d add back in dialogue from the show. Cassandra’s trigger word is wait. In the episode, Rapunzel asks her to wait three times: once at the beginning of the song, once in the middle, and once at the end. Each occurrence pushes Cassandra further away, but only one makes the soundtrack recording.
Rating: 9.5/10
Tumblr media
3. Waiting In The Wings
Emmy winner, best ballad, moving work of art - all define “Waiting In The Wings”. There’s something gripping about a side character acknowledging her place and desire to be heard when the main characters continually overshadow her goals and actions. We all know the feeling, watching your life pass by feeling like you don’t get the chance to lead your own story. Wow, my kind of emo sad song. What can I say, Cassandra gets the best. This would be a classic Disney “I Want” song if the show had been a movie.
Pro: Eden Espinosa singing that key change at “I hear my cue.”
Con: Honestly can’t think of anything besides it not being my favorite, too perfect?
Rating: 10/10
Tumblr media
2. Nothing Left To Lose
Stellar concept untouched by anything Disney has made. Here we have the redeemed villain kidnapped by someone he once called friend. He sees her in her brokenness, and instead of being condensing as she has accused others of being, he tells her the truth. Nothing good can come from giving into her anger as he once did. Varian pleads with her; not to choose good because it’s the right thing to do, but to save herself from spiraling self-destruction. By meeting Cassandra where she is emotionally, Varian is the last chance to pull her from the dark. The message is merciful, well-thought out, and completely in character for Varian and Cassandra’s situation.
This song is the epitome of “Your feelings are valid, your methods of coping are not.” Each second is breathtaking from the animation to the song itself. It’s the ultimate battle between the show’s best singers and side characters while demonstrating the power one true friend can have against your own pain and anger.
And you know what hits the hardest?! Varian doesn’t give up on Cassandra in this song (we’re not talking about later episodes here). Every time she thinks she has outmaneuvered, out-argued, or out-sang him he comes back all the more ready to reach the friend he knows is buried deep in her heart. It takes her physically removing him from her tower and caging him ON A CLIFF for the main section of the song to finish.
But that’s not where it ends. A now dejected Cassandra, reminiscent of her “Waiting In The Wings” motivations sings her true feelings now when nobody can hear. “Now, I have nothing... ... ... left... to lose...”. That long pause she takes after “I have nothing” allows the first half to stand on its own. This is Cassandra realizing Varian’s truth. By pushing her last chance at redemption away, by removing her last chance at a friend, she truly has nothing left to lose.
I could go on and on about this song: the 360° turn in 2D animation, the way Varian and Cassandra sing over each other at the song’s climax, the lyrics, Varian’s vulnerability, Cassandra at her most dramatic, and more. I’ll save you the time, it’s incredible.
Pro: THE BEST DUET why are you still here go listen to this song! Jeremy and Eden recorded it together in-person for a reason. It’s too good for anything less. Also, another Emmy nominated song
Con: It could lose its Emmy nomination which would be unjust yet poetic? Cause you know, “Nothing Left To Lose” loses would make a funny headline
Rating: 10/10

1. Ready As I’ll Ever Be
There’s a reason seemingly half the fandom joined due to this song. It encapsulates everything I love about this show flaws and all. Varian gets a solo! Cass gets a solo! Rapunzel gets a solo! Everyone gets a solo! Each time I listen it gets better. Nothing screams epic battle prep song like “Ready As I’ll Ever Be”. Plot and singing-wise this song has it all.
What makes this song a winner is my inability to analyze it. It’s not a song I think about, it’s one I enjoy and constantly replay. The impact this song has had on me and it’s ♥️❤️💕💜💛💖💞💚🧡💝💙-ness makes it the greatest song in Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.
Pro: ultimate hype song, villain Varian, mind-blowingly incredible
Con: the king sings (easy to ignore)
Rating: 10/10
Thanks for reading!

Anime Rec: Yuri on Ice
there's a cut because it’s a longer post, not because of spoilers
do i think you should watch this anime based off of my own experience? masterlist
masterlist
navigation
YURI ON ICE IS SIMPLY THE BEST ANIME OUT THERE. NOTHING WILL EVER TOP THIS
now that I made that clear, let me fangirl about this. Yuri on ice I honestly wanted to watch before I got into anime because im a huge fan of figure skating, and god is this better than watching actual figure skating
basic summary: skating legend from Russia is struggling to find motivation for his own skating, so he decides to forcibly moves in with a skater from Japan, who is debating ending his career after a failed season. yes it is very much a bl, people who say it isnt are fucking blind and deaf
the characters: god, dont even get me started. even the characters youre supposed to hate, I love. like god, all of them, give me all of them. easily the best character development I have ever seen. like god I can't get enough of these characters. I am writing fanfics for this show, so I am spending a lot of time looking at characterization, and the more you look into it, the deeper and better the characters get. I mean fuck. I could go into details all day long (and I literally have) but again, I dont want to give any details away. the characters are easy to understand, but the more you dive deeper into them, the even more you understand them. like, the little details in this show counts with the matter of character development
the plot: very well structured. everything moved in a chronological sense and follows basically the path that skaters take when theyre in a competitive season. the plot is honestly basic at first look, but so fucking good.
the writing: I could never shut up about how good the writing on this show is. I thrive to write as well as this. the foreshadowing? amazing. the dialogue? top tier. just everything about this writing is so good. I felt what the characters were feeling. my heart was warmed. just, really amazing. its supposed to be a sport anime, and I honestly forget that it is. I mean, the figure skating is everywhere and the main story, but the story is so well told through the skating its just-wow
impact on my life: I literally go to get a tattoo scheduled in honor of this show tomorrow. I am getting this show, permanently on my body. like I honestly think I didnt hype this show up enough but I didnt want to give away literally anything
should you watch it: I dont support your life if you dont. this belongs at the top of your list. like if youre watching something rn, fucking drop it and watch this. you dont need to understand figure skating at all to understand the show. I have literally watched this show twice all the way through, and probs around 5 hours of clips.

I just watched Promare, and fucking, wow.
Let’s just get what is immediately the best thing about the movie out of the way - this movie looks indescribably, jawdroppingly, absolutely top tier fucking incredible. Literally every single visual element of this movie is at the absolute top of its game - a display of pure mastery that I’m so happy to see Trigger get to achieve. This movie’s worth watching just to look at alone, because it’s such a visual feast for the eyes that I think whether or not you give a single fuck about animation whatsoever, you owe it to yourself to just look at this movie. It may be post-pretty-movie hype that’s making me say this, and perhaps I’ll change my mind, but this movie is probably the best animation I’ve ever seen, and even if I do change my mind and give that title to something else it doesn’t mean for a second that this movie is anything less than a visual masterpiece.
And then aside from visuals, it’s still a pretty entertaining narrative. I’ve heard the comparison that this entire movie is like the final fight in Gurren Lagann but if it were 2 hours long and that’s a pretty perfect way to describe its tone, this movie’s driving force is very clearly hype and it pretty much never lets go with that feeling, nonstop exciting action with crazy high stakes and asspull plot after asspull plot twist that are not even remotely foreshadowed but like, are very obviously intentionally ridiculous (we literally end up with a mech called Deus Ex Machina) and unpredictable in the best possible way, I think it’s a degree of self-awareness that genuinely works really well, the movie knows it’s all a bit of silly fun and it doesn’t try to be anything more.
Except it actually kinda does with the allegories between the Burnish and X discriminated group. Honestly this element of the narrative is fucking weird because all the Burnish’s powers come from being attuned with some alien planet in another dimension and when the movie ends that all disappears so the only real message sent is the most convoluted “racism bad, discriminated groups human” message I’ve ever seen, but like, honestly it felt secondary to the presentation for me, so even if it was a little odd I didn’t really mind. It’s also an excuse to have Galo and Lio be two very different types of protagonists reacting to very different circumstances and uniting anyway, which is great. It also means you can look at Kray as like, uh, is he like those African tribal leaders that sold their own tribe members in the actual slave trade then? If he’s part of the oppressed group but thinks they’re all lesser and does human experimentation on them and stuff? I don’t really know, for as simple as Imaishi’s works tend to be with regards to their main themes I tend not to really get them anyway. Kray’s fucking fun as fuck though and I think he’s a really appropriate villain, pretty much every character is just a fun awesome character that you won’t think about much beyond them just being good fun to watch, but if you’ve not gathered that’s what this movie was for me anyway so.
I think it’d be a good meme if people shit on whatever cred I have as a reviewer for being persuaded by a hype beast movie where the narrative substance is fairly middling, and with that in mind I’m giving this an 8/10. Narrative alone is probably like a 5, maybe a 6, but the visuals shove it way up, I just think visuals alone can’t make a 9 for me which is why it’s still at 8. I want to watch this movie infinitely, it’s just a total fucking blast to watch.
Main thing I got out of watching Galo-hen is that that “maybe a 6″ if it was just narrative actually was a 6, since Galo-hen’s a bit more of an even blend of visuals and narrative since it doesn’t look as good. Galo-hen’s fine. Likewise for Lio-hen, so they both get 6/10. Not really essential watching, don’t even watch them if you didn’t enjoy the movie in fact, and I think neither of them build hype quite like the movie’s opening does so if you’re gonna watch them, watch them after the movie proper. Also watch Galo-hen then Lio-hen since the latter has more events that take place after the former so it flows better. But if you enjoyed the movie enough and wanna see just a teeny bit more content with that visual style (albeit a little worse) and with those characters then go for it.
Good time overall.
