it occurred to me last night that i think the reason i've been feeling so dissatisfied/unfulfilled by my art lately is that i've been making almost exclusively fanart for this last year.
that's not to say that's bad; it's not even to say fanart makes me unhappy or anything like that -- i have enjoyed working on it and surely always will! -- but there is definitely a certain type of limitation in that "genre" (as it were), don't you agree? and in retrospect i believe when i did do original stuff simple as OC doodles it was much more appealing and exciting for me to both work on and complete. it's much more personal and liberating, and i think i need that extra reach of expression in my art to be happier with it.
i think that's even why i'm still so passionate and excited about working on "amber"; even though it is fanfiction, it's also so much my own that i derive a lot of joy from writing it.
i don't mean this to sound like some sort of farewell or forsaking of fanart; of course not! but i simply don't want it to be my dominant work anymore as it has been. not even that that was a conscious choice; i just wanted to make fan content. but i spend a lot of time thinking about my original stories/characters and feeling sad that i "can't" work on them and it's like... why am i telling myself that lol. i think because i was prioritizing fan work subconsciously, maybe just because of hyperfixation, or perhaps being caught in the undertow of all the fandoms around me on social media, or perhaps even a small part of me knowing that fan content is what gets rhe notes... i can't say for sure!
regardless!!! i don't want to do that anymore; this sort of weird obligation i've assigned to myself to create fanart??? no silly goose, i say to myself!!!
tl;dr i want to spend more time working on original content with the occasional break for fan art instead of the other way around. :^)
