#and it's worse for me because i'm generally very positive about thomas
Text
I knew season 22 onwards was going to be bad, but this actually might be the worst part of Thomas & Friends as a whole. Like, the dialogue isn’t as stale and simplistic as the Nitrogen era, and there aren’t the long awkward pauses where there isn’t any music and the engines are just staring at each other as the narrator prattles on, but I honest to god prefer the Nitrogen era over this.
I got more genuine enjoyment out of season 15 as whole than I did with the first half of season 22.
Like, the only positive I can think of off the top of my head is the ending song. Finding out that the international episodes used something other than Engine Roll Call was a neat surprise.

It would be hilarious if batsis! Reader managed to flee her dimension but ended up in like, Earth 63 a.k.a DC VS. Vampires universe.
Reader unlocks a metagene or finds an Apokolops Motherbox that let's her warp to other dimensions and she tries to run from the Batfam by 'jumping' and just runs into infinitely worse reincarnations of them
Like just for example uhhhh I know this is a separate character for a moment but have you considered how absolutely unhinged yandere Superman from the Injustice timelines would be. He loses Lois and his unborn child and he's in full "you know what, not only is murder ok, what if I bonded with Brainiac's ship and literally became a brainwashing fucking fascist" mode and he winds up transferring a lot of trauma and misplaced affection and obsession onto you like, and that's on top of the other unhinged shit like killing Shazam who is you know, not that he knew but that's literally a child, he accidentally but still did indeed murder a child, and even after learning the truth he's like eh sacrifices must be made, and like, THE BAD ENDING? He literally figures out how to rob people of free will and JUMPS at the opportunity like, this scene is genuinely horrifying "You make the right choice or I make it for you" like oh my god i would actually kill myself before I let him get his hands on me
Then you have not exactly a universe but more of a timeline but, you want to talk about unhinged alternate versions, we literally have Flashpoint Thomas Wayne. Bruce brutalizes locks up and or frames and even sends away anyone who messes with you. Thomas just outright fucking kills them. Thomas literally has nothing to lose and has no qualms against being an absolute menace. Like god romantic/sexual yandere are always my cookies and cream but like platonic yandere Thomas would either be the most terrifyingly protective person you'd ever met or extremely soft to you and you alone because he's already lost his family, his CHILD, so like, absolutely fuck your chances if you stumble upon him and he forms some kind of bond
Just also imagine just as a general concept like the whole universe travelling thing basically plops you down in the same place just different worlds and how either convenient or terrible that would be. You wind up jumping from the Batcave straight into the Owlcave. You go from the Watchtower to The Crime Syndicate's HQ or some other evil Justice League. But alternatively in more positive twists, from a Joker hideout being kidnapped to like.... the Lego Batman movie where him and Bruce are just chilling on the couch eating popcorn and also I still have to watch that movie I hear it's absolutely adorable 😩❤️ or you go from a Gotham that is just genuinely fucking awful, not even the smallest sparks of joy, crime and lunatics everywhere, full on edgelord comic book world some real The Boys But The Horrible Comic Version shit, and you wind up jumping from that to Brave and the Bold Bruce and get to basically relax and be your inner kid in full on superhero camp wackiness like genuinely BatB is soul healing in it's genuine, idk, wholesomeness like look at these dorks
While on the subject of heroes and such I'm trying to remember how much I actually wound up reading/watching through YouTube videos of the Invincible comic bc I'll be real I'm still down pretty bad for Nolan Grayson 😩 actually him and Superman give me very similar ideas of "oh what if you turned out to be a member of my species and I want to either train you or adopt you or mate you or whatever and I'm occasionally being casually terrifying about it" like idk if I mentioned this before but like, imagine finally learning how to fly and you get found out by Nolan (or Clark) and they literally help fly you all the way back home and like, it genuinely IS to make sure you get home, you just learned to fly and you could very easily get lost, but also like, they're following you home as you demand them not to and you're so inexperienced with any sort of fighting that if you tried to punch whichever one in anger they'd just like catch your fist and be like "oh wow you can hit harder than most your age that's really impressive 😊" but like very, very much still fending you off like you're not that much different than a human to them
I feel like I should often be, how do I put this, I love adhd ranting about shit and explaining things to people so I kinda feel like sometimes I should genuinely just talk about certain things to introduce them to people who have no idea what I'm talking about because like, idk I often talk and refer to things in ways only consumers of that media would understand and I could occasionally like you know link a clip or ramble or something to include other people? For example, this is an example of why I think Nolan is scary but also like in a sexy controlling way 😏 you know, hypothetically. And like he literally tried to teach his son a horrifying tough love "humans don't matter earth doesn't matter only we viltrumites matter fuck earth lets conquer it for our race" lesson by literally holding his son's body up in a subway to be hit by the oncoming train and let his invulnerability literally rip the passengers inside the train apart while his son was SCREAMING IN HORROR BY THE WAY. And also still scary but more mildly, did I ever reblog that Superman art where he's got you up in the air with him and your like extreme fear of heights has you clinging and hugging onto him because, also something both of them would do 🥰 cuddles because you don't want to be dropped and die! Not that they would do it but, you know, bonding, yay! ❤️

Tell us which 5 things you'd change about Downton Abbey and why 4 of them have something to do with how Thomas is written <3
Have you ever considered not roasting your beloved girlfriend in his own tumblr askbox?
As a special punishment for you I will list top 5 things about Downton in general and another five about Thomas specifically. I try to be brief.
Downton in general (note that i'm not talking about the general classism in downton because it's somewhat baked in and i'm not sure what i would change first, anyway yes i hate that tom is a class traitor and matthew should have given his inheritance to charity or spent it in something useful):
5. There was absolutely no reason why Mary had to find a new husband after Matthew. As she said when talking about Rosamund, "All alone with plenty of money and a house in Eton Square. I can't imagine anything better". If I was the writer of DA, Mary would have stayed single after Matthew's death. I'll extend this to several other endgame pairings that were really not necessary. Sometimes characters whose story gets dominated by a forced romance... are worse.
4. The disabilities in Downton should actually matter. Let's see, we have Bates's leg that bothers him in like two episodes, Thomas's hand that only prevents him from working anywhere else, Matthew's disappearing paralysis... Just let these characters be actually disabled. Please.
3. If I could change things, I would either make Edith more likable or make the narrative acknowledge that she is not a nice person.
2. Since the narrative somewhat acknowledges that Carson is not a nice person, I think he should have a redemption arc. Or if not, he and Hughes shouldn't get married, because their values are very different and if his values can not change, I don't think Hughes should marry him.
1. I am writing a more detailed analysis of this one but: Let's write stories where we are capable of feeling empathy for people who've committed crimes, okay? Let Bates be the one who stole the silver Vera stole in canon, or at least tell the viewer why Vera stole the silver. Tell the viewer why Thomas stole the wine. Let Bates be the one who killed Vera. Let Bates be the one who killed Green. Tell the viewer about Peter Coyle and why he wanted Baxter commit the theft she committed. I hate Downton's way of portraying crime as something the Good Characters never do unless there is Something We're Missing, and something the Bad Characters Just Do without any reason.
Thomas:
5. This one is not only about Thomas but where are all the gay characters in service? Anyway, let Spratt be visibly gay. Give us more gay servants now. Please. And where are all the gay characters in general? Let O'Brien be a lesbian. Make Peter Pelham an on-screen character. Make Duke of Crowborough a series regular. Show us Thomas flirting with handsome men and getting positive responses.
4. If the plotline of season six would stay the same, I would explore Thomas's feelings more. Focus on his depression and loneliness and not handwave his suicide attempt away. And not act like he actually needs a "redemption arc" at that point anymore.
3. Please, for the love of God, remove the sleep kiss from season three. I can assure you no gay man in 1920s would have thought "oh yeah i'm not 100% sure if this guy likes me or men in general, better wake him up with a kiss just to make sure". The same scene could happen with Jimmy awake and Thomas leaning in to kiss him before Jimmy can fully understand what's happening, bam! enter Alfred.
2. Look. O'Brien cared about Thomas. Look at her face when he comes back to Downton in s2. Their feud in s3 makes no sense as it is. At that point Thomas should do something really bad to get O'Brien to turn on him like that. I have a whole rewrite of this season somewhere. I think one thing that could turn O'Brien against Thomas in such a radical way could be Thomas implying in an argument that he could tell Cora about the soap thing. Not like he would actually do it, more like the impulsive "aren't you forgetting something; i would [use it against you] if i had to" -blackmail insinuation he gave the Duke. Let that be the thing that finally sets O'Brien off. That would make sense.
1. S5 conversion therapy storyline. The kind of conversion therapy Thomas went through was (and still is) something that was very traumatic for many gay men at that time. Yet it's hardly given any focus. You merely get Thomas looking ill and other characters commenting on it, and straight people explaining to him why he was very silly for thinking he could change his sexuality. The thing is, in the context of the time he is not silly at all to think that. But we don't even get to see him explaining why he wants to do it after being previously proud of his sexuality, we have to speculate or literally ask his actor for his justification for it. So. Yeah. I would really like to change this. Tell the viewer what has changed in Thomas's attitude towards his sexuality. Is it loneliness? Jimmy leaving? And does he have conflicting feelings about the treatment? About trying to "cure" a part of himself he was previously convinced was not foul? Perhaps he just wants to like women as well as men so he could have, for example, the option to start a family? Then, after Thomas's motive has been explained, the trauma of that kind of treatment should not be handwaved away. It should be explored. And as a sidenote, there should be some kind of reason why he needs to ask for help in the end. As it is, him asking for Baxter's help serves as little purpose as him getting help from Bates in s3. Thomas could have threatened O'B with the soap thing himself, Thomas could have walked to the doctor by himself. There should be a reason why he needs help, other than it's important that The Good Characters help The Bad Character. Maybe he is in such bad state he literally can't walk by himself, maybe the doctor needs to be called in, something. And after the treatment is over with, explore it's effects on Thomas's self-esteem and how he acts in later romantic and sexual relationships. Fellowes, focus on Thomas for once challenge.
*
Send me a fandom/show/book/etc and I'll tell you Top 5 thing I would change about it

If a person were the designated therapist for an engine (I'm thinking Gordon or Henry specifically, but also in general), what kinds of things get discussed? What fears do they hold that they refuse (or very reluctantly try) to speak about? Idk, I just feel very curious.
Not sure I’m the best person to ask. I’m trying very hard here to stay on-topic, and to not go to town analyzing the premise of the question…
… but, damn, this ask made me realize that I have a lot of thoughts about engine psychology.
In short, I doubt the engines have much access to this kind of psychiatric help. And if they did I’m not sure it would make things better. Like, “engines don’t need therapists!” is a position that seems ripe for abuse, but I am also concerned that therapists would often be used to get engines resigned to mistreatment.
But I’m gonna heroically just Stick To The Question.
Gordon would have a good deal of survivor’s guilt to unpack. Nor do I think he’d be unique! MOST of our Sodor friends would. Sodor is a refuge, but most of them have friends and family that have long since been outright killed. Especially during modernization/dieselization.
The RWS books suggest that he adapted with remarkable grace to being replaced on the Express by Pip and Emma. Like… uncharacteristic grace. Hmmm.
If you’re cool with me diving into my humanization for a moment… I absolutely believe every converted ex-vehicle is enrolled in therapy as a matter of course (that’s a tremendous and stressful life change!)
In Gordon’s sessions—well, some of Gordon’s rather self-centered behavior is even less cute as a human than as an engine.
And I think Gordon early on, with an unusual degree of insight, decides that he wants to talk about his fears that now he’s going to lose his friends (both current and ex-engines).
Of course, the way he puts it is that he’s afraid he’ll lose them because he used to be a magnificent Gresley Pacific, but now he’s nothing in particular.
After his therapist’s mind is done exploding, she gently tries to steer him into examining his actual behavior as well as why he thinks they were ever friends with him to begin with.
Gordon: because they admired me greatly, of course!
therapist: …
Gordon: i mean. anyone with a shred of sense would want to be friends with one of my kind!
therapist: you know… i think perhaps you actually don’t give yourself enough credit
Gordon: whatever do you mean?
Meanwhile, Henry would have plenty of identity issues to unpack. Plus some PTSD.
Though, again, in canon itself I think we see him doing a remarkably good job working through it all over the decades.
Speaking of canon, the one time when I really, really, really do think a psychiatrist’s help was urgently needed for an engine was, of course, during the tunnel incident. I call that a mental health crisis, full stop, and it still breaks my heart that the best STH could do for him was “brick up in a dark lonely tunnel for several months and turn it all into a morality tale.” (Perhaps the scariest part is that I do think STH did his best. I mean, he had worse and harsher options, and it cost him, not to go for those… but it is also VERY 1920s, to look at some ordinary worker falling apart at the seems and to NOT get him/her competent mental help.)
And Henry wouldn’t be the only one with PTSD. Three-fourths of the Little Western could use treatment for it, stat.
Other special mentions:
Thomas grapples with the mixed blessing of being The Favorite (the actual favorite, James, if you please);
Percy and James both would be pleased to vent about how no one takes them seriously, although honestly I think in the latter’s case the problem is entirely self-inflicted;
and I respectfully submit that Sir Handel is just a goddamn mess and could keep a team of therapists employed for decades
“I always stand well back… trucks don’t like me.” Yes, it’s just a funny natural phenomenon. Like gravity. No explaining it! Ah well, at least you won’t mock the hell out of the poor brother you just got wrecked when he’s still struggling with the after-effects of your idiocy months down the road.

Conversation
MrDonald09: Since Series 22, what new change has annoyed you the MOST??
tttedrawings: Fantasy sequences and the intro/life lessons outro, they just make the episodes shorter, and most of the time aren't really needed at all.
MrDonald09: Ah yes unfortunately you can only have 4 options on Twitter polls, I’m sure the list would be huge if you could have more.
MasonDey1: To me the whole concept of the Steam Team is just pointless.
MrDonald09: Yeah it limits the characters that are used most of the time.
PSideplates: I voted for bouncing since it's closest to the general "kids show" tone that BWBA takes on. It really is like watching a show you put on for your 3 year old so you can leave the room in peace. It hurts to watch. If we were getting the Brenner era where the engines bounced, had ugly details, went worldwide, and got Nia and Rebecca, I'd be miffed but accept it. But BWBA just claims to be TTTE and acts like a generic preschool show. And I don't wanna be in a position where I'm an adult watching a preschool show.
MrDonald09: Agreed. I feel proud to be a fan when I watch classic era and Brenner era, but if it was like BWBA throughout the whole show I can tell you I would not be supporting it now.
TCKRangeltoon: I blame Chuggington.
PSideplates: I don't. Chuggington ended before they came up with BWBA. If anything, Chuggington made the market for train toys/shows competitive which forced HiT to make good Thomas products, well toys anyway.
ronniethe14xx: Honestly, disagree with the point it's the most general kids show tone. Travelling seems to be the new hip and cool thing to do in kids shows, I'd argue that makes it slightly worse then the bouncing because it's clear Thomas only jumped on that trend to be "hip".
JovanniChavez11: Faster pace and Thomas losing his identity. I don’t mind Thomas going on a trip but that wasn’t the way to handle it.
MrDonald09: Yes. IMO it should have stopped after the BWBA special, I think it should have only been a special.
Bostonthomasfan: Don’t really mind the bouncing but it can be over done at times. For around the world? I wish there were more episodes on Sodor and less around the world. Like 18-8 would be good.
MikeArc31375512: The bouncing. Loathe it with a passion.
ThomasTVNostal1: The thing I hate is constant arguing over opinions. Some people have been told to fuck themselves for disliking an episode of BWBA that the majority of the fandom likes and vice versa. This is unacceptable. As a fandom, we're a team and we help each other out.
ChillerB3: The forced feminism with Nia, Rebecca and the newer Steam Team really rubbed me the wrong way, more than hyper bouncing and worldwide shit did.
MrDonald09: Same, especially how the majority of the audience really doesn’t care about that, having more females, great! but don’t mess with many people’s childhood to make SJWs and toxic feminists happy cuz I guarantee you the people who wanted this change probably don’t even like the show.
ryanburges4472: I didn't read properly and the real thing since Series 22 that has annoyed me the most is the bouncing. I've been more bothered about the steam team without Henry (Just Henry). I'm happy with Edward sleeping at Wellsworth.
MrDonald09: Yeah, I completely agree honestly i’m not mad that Edward isn’t in the Steam Team anymore. It's Henry that annoys me the most.
ryanburges4472: I know! Gordon and James sleeping at Tidmouth without Henry. Edward is best at Wellsworth because he has a branch line which stars from Wellsworth.
CoolCar161: Henry and Edward stopped appearing as much anyway. They haven’t been good characters since series 4, even in the Brenner era they had little to no appearances due to writer's block. Rivets is a nice little detail that makes them seem more real, Thomas always wanted to see the world and the bouncing is hardly that bad.
TheBlueE21: Thomas' world tour. It's so inconsistent. Doesn't tie into the movie that hyped it up, never explains why or for how long Thomas is in each country, 1 ep he's in China, then Brazil etc then Sodor eps act as though he never left due to always being there. Plus most sets aren't great.
halfbakedhex8: For the record, I voted the 'rivets' option because the inclusion of the new detailing runs so counter to what the show is now, that trying to inflict reality onto the now-very-unreal engines feels very confused as to what the show is trying to achieve.
BluebellThEngin: The "bouncing" doesn't bother me much at first, but as time went on, it starts to get a little out of control and it kinda bugs me. I don't have a problem with the added details like the rivets, but they do look a little too big. Shrink them in size and they'll be okay. I'm mixed on Thomas travelling around the world if I'm being honest. The new Steam Team is what bugs me the most out of all of these options. I never liked it to begin with (minus my child self). It makes the other characters look useless. What I love about the Classic Series is we got lots of stories about almost each and every single one of them it makes the series interesting. But with the Steam Team, not only does it focus on the main characters so much, but it also brings them out of character. Especially if it's for the sake of the plots.
fan_ttte: The New Steam Team with Nia and Rebecca is what I don’t like most. I don’t mind the bouncing or rivets, Thomas going worldwide is okay. I don't know, I just feel like it would’ve been better if Nia and Rebecca did join, but also keep the others, for some interesting interactions and episodes.
islandofodor: If Thomas hadn’t gone worldwide, we’d probably still be in the Brenner era. Granted, it’d still be a slight step down but the international episodes barely take advantage of the different setting and opt to use generic plotlines that we’ve already seen on Sodor.
thesaddletank18: Bouncing, rivets and worldwide idea are bad but the new Steam Team is just....why was this done to the show?
Jacob34335638: I liked the new details, I’m mixed on the New Steam Team, and Thomas travelling the world. But the bouncing is what pisses me off the most, it literally makes the show look like Chuggington. The bouncing was at it’s worst in Journey Beyond Sodor and Thomas’ Magical Birthday Wishes.
TWR_Douglas_10: ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!!!!!
DFox1203: Is everything an option?
TheWinnerGuyCJP: Voted worldwide cuz it makes Thomas completely out of character.
SoupyGunzilla: I think a lot of the stories suffer from the shorter time. A lot of them could be better if they had more time.
kofi_milky: The bouncing, more sing alongs, replacing Edward and Henry with Nia and Rebecca. Even Thomas going worldwide. When the Rev. W. Awdry said "Here is your friend Thomas the Tank Engine. He wanted to come out of his station yard and see the world", the world that's he meant is Sodor.
sodordaily: Choosing New Steam Team because I miss the old SO MUCH!
peter_sam_no4: I think for me the bouncing as it’s so unrealistic . A 1 ton lump of metal can not swing all over the place like it has no weight.
Growlithemaste1: I hate the bouncing the most, but the rest are all useless too.
sixteen_dnw: Worst is the New Steam Team, then worldwide, then rivets, and then bouncing. TBH it doesn’t bother me too much.
BearsFlush: It annoys me that Thomas travels the world, as they remove chapters that might be focus on Sodor, and the locations and some engines are not represented correctly on the railroad.
VacentTest: I’m fine with the New Steam Team changing Edward and Henry out for Nia and Rebecca, I’ve always supported it in the beginning because increased feminism is good. Thomas going worldwide, that didn’t annoy me cause I was interested in that, the rivets is minor and nothing to worry about. But the bouncing, annoyed me the most at first but I’m used to it.
SnatchyBoi: The bouncing and the New Steam Team.
GWREngine: The New Steam Team is the most annoying change. It feels like Mattel doesn't care how special Edward, Henry, and Toby are. Plus we don't need to have more than 1 female main character. Emily being the only girl used to make her special. With Nia and Rebecca around, she isn't special anymore.
TurnTable2002: Chris Renshaw's music really annoys me.
MichaelfromNZ1: Bouncing, worldwide and New Steam Team. They represent how far Thomas has fallen since Mattel fully took over.
ArmchairRailway: New Steam Team.
TI4MGP: This is probably the hardest time I’ve had deciding on one of your polls lol. I went with the Steam Team though, but bouncing comes in a REALLY REALLY close second. The other two are less but equal with each other.
jack_bench: TBH, I'm fine with all of them? But I chose bouncing because the rivets are neat, world-tour - while it makes no sense - has a valuable goal (and is kinda fun), and the Steam Team really needed more female representation which we got with two positive role models in Nia and Rebecca. Bouncing is unnecessary, but not horrendous.
Holycro1Michael: Everything!
JosefSnowBall: Rivets was something I actually liked seeing on some engines. Bouncing is something I’m OK with, it’s kind of grown on me. New Steam Team sucks because it gets rid of the 2 best engines, Edward and Henry, and Thomas worldwide sounded like a bad idea to begin with.
TheThomasFan: Probably Thomas going worldwide . The animation is shit and it’s all just recoloured.
TheUnluckyTug: The new Steam Team. I think I'd be a little more accepting of BWBA if Edward and Henry weren't so transparently and obviously thrown to the side and treated as if they don't exist. It was like the biggest "fuck you" to fans ever.
MrDonald09: Yeah, not to mention Nia and Rebecca have such generic personalities they can barely hold a unique episode nowadays. I can understand Edward staying at Wellsworth but they did Henry DIRTY by slapping him at Vicarstown so he can focus on his Mainland duties yet not do any episode focused on this new job.
SteamEn83954980: Ok so ignoring Emily, it was a perfect 1-7 number of characters and now it's just 1, 18, 22, 4, 5, 6 and 12. Like I know it's minor but that fact gets under my skin.
DBlue02: I voted for the bouncing, but yeah, I kinda have to agree with Simon Martin’s opinion on the Steam Team concept, it’s long since overstayed its welcome. I’d prefer a nice balance of the main and side characters getting their share of the spotlight, like in the classic seasons.
TFan512: What if Edward, Henry, Nia and Rebecca were all part of the main cast.

This isn't a writer's ask but I've been thinking about how much I love all of TEP but especially the backstory elements, I'm really curious what your current timeline for the Gloucester boys' childhood looks like. No pressure if it's not solid or if that's too many spoilers but I'd love to know more about how it's all laid out! Hope you're doing great!
Thank you so much for this, Macy! (This is gonna help me with some of it, just being able to write it out somewhere instead of just having it in my head... which is where it is right now). That being said, it’s not totally solid yet, just because I’m not entirely set on how I want this whole thing structured. I have somewhat of a general idea, but it’s not 100% there yet, so I’ll give you what I have (because these boys absolutely wreck me too so I completely understand). [And I don’t even care about spoilers anymore, I’m just going to tell all because it’s all still in the planning stages, so all subject to complete change hehehe].
- So Edgar’s mother, Margaret, was in her late teens when she married Gloucester, who was in his mid-twenties. They eventually had a son a few years later, Edgar, although he had no name for a year. Lear was off fighting in France and they wanted him to name the child (or at least Gloucester did). I’m feeling (and this might be too clean-cut) that Margaret started calling the boy “Thomas” in private. She didn’t want Lear to name the child, but eventually Gloucester got his way.
- In the meantime, Gloucester and Kent were sent off to France to help aid in the war effort. They both find themselves in a rough area one night, both of them sleeping with women they found on the street. One of those women is Edmund’s mother, Celine. Gloucester impregnates her and essentially leaves her to deal with this child that she has no money to raise. Celine, being a clever politician and knowing exactly who she slept with, persists in getting Gloucester to acknowledge the child and bring the boy back with him to England, much to his shame.
- Once Margaret finds that Gloucester has slept with this woman, and got a child out of her, and brought this child back to England. She is beyond heartbroken (this is when the naming for Edgar takes place, so it’s even worse for her). She becomes violently ill and Edgar is taken in by Christine, Albany’s governess, as is Edmund. She dies not long afterwards.
- The boys are raised together, becoming one another’s best friend as they are raised under Christine’s guidance, and she becomes a mother to them. Gloucester is only slightly involved in their upbringing until the boys get a little older, but he always seems to favor Edgar, and for a long time appears ashamed that Edmund’s in the picture at all. And you can bet that it reaches Edmund in a highly negative way, which makes Edgar upset. Edgar was always protective of his little brother, and would always call him ‘brother’ and nothing less.
- Edgar grows up wildly imaginative, somewhat theatrical, highly empathetic (which causes him to be sensitive beyond belief), kind, poetic, artistic, and eager to please. Edmund grows up somewhat advanced for his age (both of these boys did honestly, just in different ways), smart, also eager to please, also kind when he wants to be, stubborn, but highly capable.
- When the boys reach their teenage years, their duties start splitting. Edgar is taken under his father’s wing, schooled in military tactics, in law, in violence, in leadership (all things Edmund would love to learn). At first, being eager to please, Edgar is perceptible to all of this, wanting to be the man his father was. So he becomes very well read in law and in warfare. He basically has the whole world figured out by the time he’s sixteen. Then he starts seeing all the cracks in the wall, all the horribleness, everything that’s wrong with Lear’s awful regime. He starts spending more time on his own, only doing his duties because he’s afraid of the consequences of refusing. Edmund, in the meantime, is also being educated, but only as far as to join the army when he’s eighteen. It’s not the kind of attention he wants to be getting. Edmund would kill to be in his brother’s position.
- By the time Edgar’s eighteen, he’s anxious, misanthropic, losing faith in God, and when Christine dies, he becomes terrified of the idea of death. He is forced to join the army by his father. Albany promises Gloucester to look after Edgar, but Albany can see that Edgar is terribly unhappy. Edgar proves a terrible soldier, and even though he’s made ‘friends’ in the army, he loathes all of them for some reason or other. It’s also at the time that Lear and Gloucester agree that Edgar should marry Cordelia (the two of them are friends, but have never considered themselves lovers. They agree to go through with it for the sake of convenience).
- One night, around when Edgar’s nineteen, a group of Lear’s soldiers around Edgar’s age are all drunk, they make a petition to kill Lear and overthrow him at his jubilee parade, tired of all of the war and oppression that he’s been inflicting on the world outside. Edgar also signs the petition, but he’s completely sober. The petition ends up in Edgar’s coat pocket, and then it sits on his desk until the thought of this suicide mission drives him into a guilt-driven psychotic break. He spills ink all over his name, and also over his letters to Cordelia. Edmund catches him and calms him down enough to get him to a doctor, although Edgar has long since lost contact with reality. However, Edmund also sees Edgar’s treason, half-blotted out. He decides to save his brother by rewriting the petition without his brother’s name on it. He burns the other one. He hands the note back to one of the soldiers, hoping that they succeed because Edmund too strongly dislikes Lear.
- While Edmund saves his brother, he also betrays him. Jealous that his brother is to be married to Cordelia (and not believing that sickness to be as bad as it was), Edmund takes the ink-blotted letters and shows them to Lear, advising the king against the marriage as his brother is mad and clearly not in love with Cordelia, therefore completely ill-suited to be her husband. Lear agrees. Edmund joins the English army upon his eighteenth birthday. Cornwall takes him under his wing. Edmund enjoys the army, because everyone starts out on the same level and people only move up in the world through merit. He takes a nine-year tour in France, hoping to become a Major by the end (which he does).
- Edgar, meanwhile, recovers in Albany’s care. The jubilee plot falls through, but the group of knights on the new petition that Edmund drew up are all still executed. Edgar is removed from service due to his health. He eventually goes into public relations once he is well enough, working closely with Goneril. She is intensely jealous of Albany’s love for Edgar (which is going to play out in some way, but I’m not set on it yet). Edgar writes to Edmund during those nine years, never completely recovering, but he’s well enough to be on his feet. Edmund never reveals that he saved his brother, nor does he reveal that he was the one who destroyed Edgar’s possible marriage with Cordelia (although it probably would have fallen through on its own).
That’s what I’ve got so far! (Or at least these are ideas- they all need fleshing out and reorganizing, but here they are!) Thank you so much for this wonderful ask, Macy! (And for your constant support on this project - it means more than I can say!) Much love :)

Due to limited images per post the max being 10, I have numbered every paragraph that I would like to link multiple images too above this post will be linked images that match the numbers highlighted in red.
I thought of the idea of using animals to identify each generation as a predator and prey style, so I sketched some caricatures to personify animals and make the sketches look fun and interesting, I drew the animals to specifically portray the look of certain generations by being blatant and obvious of which gen is which, I did this by making the animals wear suits or BLM tops that clearly show a divide in who is the business man and who is the protester! #1
Tumblr media
I asked my friends and family from different gens to give their opinion on other generations and stated that the opinion could be positive or negative, of course in the end many people became very biased and decided to slate the generation that wasn't their own.
Tumblr media
Looking at the opinions of older generations and younger generations (Gen Z and Gen Y), I realised the information I was gathering was making me more biased towards my own generation too, so I decided to look at the negatives of Gen Z too.
Along the way I looked at "breaking out", (my biased veiw) and the way that I thought Gen Z needed an out and how they are trying to escape the structured yet faulty system of today's society, this would explain the protesting for justice, that Gen Z fight so hard for just so they can have a voice.

I also have looked at this situation between the two generations as a sort of war, and then it all fit together, the animal forms, the war aspect, the power and lack there of, in both generations, I decided that both generations were kind of equal and fighting a losing battle. So I wanted to look at the animals again but instead of the animals being opposite like predator and prey I wanted to make them equal but still represent their generation on how eachother see the opposite Gen, (to include the research).

I looked at a variety of different ways to make what I wanted to get across make sense and look cool! So I looked into making masks for the generations to use. #2
Tumblr media
Before that I looked at making lino prints and exploring with the colour and different styles of print and how I could use text to get the message across or even just images to show breaking out of a mould or the "figurative" box. #3

Later on I looked at the negatives of Gen Z and saw that it was mostly negative due to an online presence that a teenager has, and even worse, the presence adult thats disguised as a teenager has! I wanted to look at this world from an outside perspective so thought that creating a room where a person wears a mask as a disguise online and is totally absorbed into the technology of today's society, would be photographed in their room, the room being the place of protection for all teens everywhere, a relatable setting to the audience.

The photography would be in the style of a photographer and artist called Thomas Friedrich Schäfer.

Anyway I didn't like where the project was going, infact I actually felt depressed with the whole project once I got to this stage, but I carried on thinking of new ideas to create so I dropped the focus of mainly Gen Z, and looked at the start of my book and really liked the tinned fish idea and started to look at Gen Z (A fish) breaking out of the can but then standing up to this massive bear (Gen Y) but them being preditor and prey didn't matter, because the fish grew to the size of the bear (making it equal) and they started fighting. My idea for this was to make an animation and create this whole scene and put it on a CD and play it on a mini DVD player I have, but again I ended up feeling very down about making this animation due to not having the correct programmes and little guidance in class due to Covid restrictions, therefore I think I'm going to make the final peice a painting that looks like a comic strip style fight of this giant fish and bear fighting, called "The Battle of the GENZ" for a movie that's coming out, infront I could have this can of fish, it's one of my very first ideas for this project, the tinned can of labelled millenials or Gen Zer's, being packed away into neatly compressed group of fish and labelled. The idea of both generations fighting even though they are the same size is like a metaphor displaying how the older and younger generation are going to have this fight and battle for power when they could work together, being powerfull is more important.
I think it would also be nice to show the maks I made.
