Many historians note that the final years of the Empire were especially excessive in declining morals and values as witnessed through decreasing safety, promiscuity, lavish overindulgent parties, and violence. During this time the Empire's larger cities were very unsafe because violent crimes were rampant in their streets. Roman historians recount that "there were 32,000 prostitutes in Rome during the reign of Trajan. Emperors like Nero and Caligula became infamous for wasting money on lavish parties, where guests ate and drank until they became ill" (Bower et al 1993). Some believe that the most alarming trend during this time was the rise in Roman passion for cruelty. Gladiatorial combats, which brought together the rich, the poor, and often the emperor himself, became the most popular form of entertainment. The audience would shout out cries and curses as the gladiators fought and multiple contests took place on the same stage daily. "Should the ground of the arena become too soaked with blood, it was covered over with a fresh layer of sand, and the revolting performances went on" (Bower et al 1993). These are just a few of many examples that historians often cite when arguing that the overall decline in Roman morals and values was one of the major reasons why Rome eventually fell. The United States today cannot claim purity in comparison to Rome regarding our own decline in morals and values. Las Vegas, one of the most popular tourist destinations in our country advertises gambling, sex, and overall gluttony twenty-four hours a day. Despite the lack of values that Las Vegas promotes, it is also one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Murphy is well-aware of easily made comparisons between Rome and the United States today in terms of declining morals and values when he writes that "Romans and Americans can't get enough of laws and lawyers and lawsuits. They believe deeply in private property. They relish in humiliation of public figures: Americans through comedy and satire, talk radio and Court TV; the Romans through vicious satire, to be sure, but also, during the republic, by means of the censorial nota, the public airing, name by name, of everything the great men of the time should be ashamed of" (Murphy 2007).

I don't know when this was written, but it is obviously out of date by now. Ever since 2015, America has been in such a precipitous cultural decline that the debauchery of Las Vegas is a joke in comparison.

On top of that, like Rome, we are allowing our enemies to become stronger than us, permitting entry to unmanageable numbers of immigrants with no plan or requirement for assimilation, and attempting to spread our empire to regions and peoples that are not economically or militarily feasible for us. Plus, we are treating our military like garbage and then expecting them to carry out impossible tasks. We have also promoted and codified a broad diversity of contradictory beliefs regarding First Things, which creates political instability from term to term.

Heidi and Viktore?

Heidi and Viktore is a placeholder name for a top-down rpg about making food, fighting monsters, and learning how to treat yourself better.

The setting is vaguely fantasy European, centered around a monastery that particularly ritualizes the creative arts, particularly the performing arts and the culinary arts as holy, in a world where most of the monsters are nightmarish in origin.

Heidi von Glockner is one of the Glockner clerics, tasked with investigating an abandoned settlement in the heart of the nightmare to seek an origin and a solution to the blight. She goes through the map and investigates, replenishing her supplies and cooking them into magical items that will restore her stats.

Part of what I wanted out of Dungeon Meishi was a greater sense of the lasting effects of nutrition, so the game mechanics of H&V are based on something similar, with water corresponding to base hit-point replenishment, sugars corresponding to mana replenishment (both of which apply a debuff once totally depleted), proteins which decreases incoming damage (including internally), vitamins which increase the duration of nutrients, fats which increase efficacy of nutrients, and take up a bigger portion of the appetite, and then finally fiber, which increases appetite capacity overall. None of these are set in stone because I haven't playtested any of this, but it's what works for now.

In the library, Heidi finds Viktore, a sickly, uncanny shadowy apparition that she discovers is the original reason for the nightmare, but not in control of it

Viktore is the result of a terrible spell gone wrong, fusing 7 people together into a living amalgam of flesh and souls. All souls are distinct and present to some degree in their consciousness and have different wants, needs, takes on the situation, abilities, and appetites. They're in a bad way, distrustful of themself seven ways to Sunday, and are pretty much just literally being held together with necromancy by the point Heidi finds them and shares some of her supplies and some of her rituals with them.

While I'm still working on fleshing all 7 out, I do know that one of the Viktores (none of them will cop to it) is believed to be the one to summon the nightmare, contacting it from a grimoire and betraying the world. Heidi spends some time working with Viktore to figure out what precisely happened, but eventually she's taken by the nightmare, leaving it up to Viktore to get it together and save her.

I do have a few of the Viktore alters figured out as well! Francois I've been playing during one of my BG3 runs, and they're an asocial, catty necromancer with a soft spot for their childhood friend Katherine "Katydid" Durand, daughter of one of the guards taking on the family business.

WOBBLEDOGS: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES on a new post because the other one is already a pain in the ass to scroll through. once again you are not allowed to talk shit on my unreadable screenshots unless youre going to buy me a new pc so i can play at something above 640x400 rez

anyway not a whole lot happening this time since i got like 80% of the achievements in my previous big play sesh and a lot of this one was detritus, but here's some highlights and lowlights first: the worst

i hate this piece of shit so much. ugly, completely unable to take care of itself, didn't actually gain me any progress towards the worm achievement [one of the parents was also missing the same set of legs].

here's another one i used for getting worm, though im not showing him for the legs so much as just what the fuck happened to his face

also he has two left wings and 0 right which i thought was pretty funny

with those two i managed to get this single leg guy. stayed a grey ratlike slab for most of its life

after like 6 eggs of random other breeding around trying to find one missing front right leg i gave up and just used a dog code editor for it.

anyway heres my worm. more of a snake if im honest

next, descendant of Midge!!!, and the first in an entirely too long chain to getting the Flat achievement

this fucking achievement. i'd heard a bit about spindly being really picky and hard to get, and in some ways i get it since it's so weird about how it calculates leg length, but also all you need to do for that one is get a long-legged dog and cram it full of bananas and/or nutrition pellets and you should get there in 2 or 3 rounds. THIS fucking thing took balancing across 3 different genes; not just minus height, but also minus overall size because the fucking height reducer genes would not behave on their own. i also gave it length Increasers just to be sure we didn't run into weird issues with having too little surface area.

seriously though, you need <5% max height for the achievement, and i at one point got one from 10% down to 7%, but then in the following mutation the supposed height Decreasing gene made it Increase up to like 15%, and then to 27% after that for some fucking reason. by far not the first time i'd seen genes doing the opposite of what they were labelled to do, but the first time it so actively worked against me.

i went through at least 6 dogs for this one and none of them are notable but i like these two's names

eventually the winning one hit these stats in its teen mutation and i was like. oh my god please

and thankfully with the combo i was using it did meet the threshhold next mutation, and even managed to hit 0% when it was fully grown

so this is it. maximum thinness dog.

also, mkwii inadvertently gave me my first 2-tailed lad so yay

and finally here is my favoritest boy of this run

result of just breeding around because i needed a dog who was fucking normal and NOT: -way too fucking big, -way too fucking small, -missing limbs and immobile, -ugly as shit. and also didnt have a massive tail always getting it dragged through the tubes. anyway yeah i fed this guy like 4 cores before i let it go, but i did also export its code as a juvenile so i'll bring it back at some point too

Week 2

1 - Timber types on site.

A study looking at the different types of timber that people are throwing away on the site and mapping them depending on their density since this plays a role in acoustic performance. The most common type was chipboard, this is likely because most furniture and kitchens are made from chipboard. It is also one of the least dense which can help with acoustic performance.

2 - Sound absorption of different materials on site.

The acoustic performance of different types of material that are dumped on site were assessed within the context of a radio broadcasting studio. These studios require acoustic deadness meaning the materials have high sound absorption capabilities in the low frequency range (this will produce a low reverberation time).

The images diagram the amount of sound that is absorbed by each material on site. The white lines represent sound within the space and as they hit each material some on that energy is absorbed my the material represented by the black lines. The thicker the black the greater the absorption. As can be seen the less dense materials such as cardboard, chipboard and textiles perform the best.

3 - The effect upcycling materials can have on sound absorption.

This pieces diagrams the same performance using the same materials but after being upcycled to perform better acoustically.

The greatest improvement and better performing overall was the recycled plastic or polypropylene. To achieve this the plastic is shredded and the fibers are forced together into a web with a bonding agent. This results in a non woven material, the process of construction is in direct opposition to that of knitting and weaving where their strength comes from the ordered and repetitive structure in contrast to bonding fibers together that are arranged chaotically. This material fits in the idea of pirate radio since it was going against the structured and ordered broadcastings such as the BBC, to create something new.

So does the building start to use and join materials in new ways like Dwayne Oylers active inlays.

4 - Sounds on site

Unfinished but the idea was looking at how sound changes on site over the day. The conclusion was that was the day progress and the skips started to fill up the volume on site decreases.

What does it mean for design? - Maybe the places dispose of their rubbish are on springs so at the start of the day the bottom level is high, reducing the sound. As the day goes on the weight from the rubbish pushes the springs down, leaving space for new items to be added but minimising the distance the items drop and therefore the sound they make.

5 - History of a plastic bottle

This is an ongoing piece that is illustrating the history of the plastic bottle. Starting with the dinosaurs since plastic is made from oil. The idea is that eventually my design and proposal will be introduce and diagram how I am recycling/reusing the bottle.

The layering in the image could also be representative of the proposal where each floor is for a different purpose with different material usage.

HEADCANON 010: DAMIAN & BLOODLUST.

OG POST LINK. to differentiate parental influence, this post is color coded with green for talia, orange for bruce.

damian was raised with a single mindset: KILL.

talia did her best with the tools that she had. she raised a child into a league of killers ( assassins, even ). this promoted violence as a positive pillar of damian's formative years, which was subsequently reflected as negative when he eventually fell in with bruce & his family.

with only ra's & talia as his main role models, damian falls in step behind them & their own habits. the NCTSN (national trauma treatment center), explains the below snippets specifically regarding children growing up in poverty but in this case, we're using this to only point out the negative effects of trauma on the child as damian has never experienced poverty.

"[..] the experiences of chronic trauma [..] ha[s] been associated with decreased parental effectiveness, less warmth, limited understanding of child development and needs, increased use of corporal punishment and harsh discipline, high incidents of neglect, and an overall strategy of reactive parenting."

damian was rewarded with positive reinforcement for lashing out in violence & performing kills. with the change in environment & pace by being placed under bruce's tutelage, damian's cool understanding of the world turned to red hot anger that he cannot find in himself to control. because of the reinforced positivity for killing, damian truly embraced its influence over his mind. this has set him up for failure as a hero ultimately. he cannot control the bloodlust that he was rewarded for indulging.

Research on intergenerational trauma [..] has demonstrated that adults with histories of childhood abuse and exposure to family violence have problems with emotional regulation, aggression, social competence, and interpersonal relationships, leading to functional impairments in parenting which transmit to the next generation.

talia did her best but she, too, falls in step behind ra's & his particular bad parenting habits. if we look higher in the family tree, rūh herself is atrocious in nature.

The family as a whole is also impacted by chronic conditions of high stress and exposure to multiple traumas and families often experience chaotic, disorganized lifestyles, inconsistent and/or conflicted relationships, and crisis-oriented coping.

this one ^ is self-explanatory.

back to the main point:

even after patrolling at night, he still has an itch at the back of his neck, the twitch of his bloodthirsty fingers ever present so he trains until he can’t stand anymore. it’s the only solution he’s found, especially needed when his mind wanders in public.

in public, he often finds himself staring at people. too many find it off-putting the way he picks apart their skin in his mind, imagining just how he would kill them if needed. when his imagination gets too much for him without any consequences, he retreats to either his room to draw/paint or ( more often ) to the batcave where he trains his frustrations off.

he knows where that bloodlust will get him so he does his best to bury it deep down. the few times he feels guilt is when he looks his brother in the eye and his mind is tearing muscle from bone like teeth to a chicken bone.

damian is horrified with himself most days, the bloodlust consuming him in the late hours as tears stain his pillow and dull fingernails drag down his scarred chest just to watch in sick fascination as red scratches follow in their wake seconds later. some days, he uses a knife.

disgusted with himself and his insatiable thirst to spill blood, he tends to turn it inward rather than seeking help or hurting another human. he’s added too many scars to count to his torso and arms in an attempt to still his fingers and calm his hunger. thanks to his nightly escapades, he can easily pass the scarring off to an inquiring sibling as a trophy of war. none know that most are inflicted by the katana propped up beside his bed or the dagger in his bedside drawer.

this behavior is a pattern that follows him into his adulthood. with it, he carries an immense guilt: he bears the knowledge that he must improve himself but the inability to do so as if he stops, his sword would turn outward towards others. without the innate ability to self-regulate, he copes alone in self loathing.

Iraq is struggling to maintain its Russian military helicopters

The Iraqi armed forces are facing significant difficulties in sustaining their fleet of military helicopters manufactured in Russia as an indirect result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The latest quarterly report by the U.S. Department of Defense Inspector General's Office (OIG) on Operation Inherent Resolves against ISIS notes that the Russian supply chain problems caused ?? by the war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Moscow for perpetuating it affected Iraq's ability to sustain its Russian-made aircraft.

The EIG report revealed that the Mi-17 Hip military transport helicopters of the Iraqi Army Aviation Command (IqAAC), in particular, are being negatively affected. In addition to forming the backbone of the IqAAC helicopter fleet, which also includes Mi-28NE and Mi-35M attack helicopters, these Mi-17s are essential to support ground forces and perform medical evacuations.

The report pointed out that "reduced maintenance and logistical support for the Mi-17 resulted in the most significant decrease in the mission capacity rate among ISF (Ia Iraqi Security Forces) aircraft linked to ground units".

"In addition, given the ISF's desire to frequently use the Mi-17 in operations, fuselages are exceeding their recommended flight hours, exacerbating their low mission capacity rates," he added.

These setbacks occur only a few months after Iraq started a repair program for its military helicopters.

On a March 1 visit to Taji Air Base in northern Baghdad, Iraqi Defense Minister Anad Sadoun inspected helicopters built in Russia recently returned to service by the program.

"We continue with this campaign and, in the near future, we plan to repair a second batch of helicopters and so on, until we complete the repair of all broken helicopters and thus increase the overall level of readiness to more than 80%," he said.

Citing the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, the IGO report predicts "a reduced operational status of these platforms at least during the conflict in Ukraine".

With this war probably continuing in the near future, Iraq will probably not be able to complete its repair project at any time. Eventually, you may even have to land and cannibalize some of your helicopters to keep others in airworthiness.

A significant decrease in the number of operational Mi-17s can negatively affect the ISF's ability to combat the remnants of ISIS in the country.

Like Iraqis, Afghans valued their Mi-17s, finding them much more suitable for Afghanistan's dusty environment and easier to maintain and operate thanks to decades of experience in using them.

Given this familiarity, the US has taken the practical measure of acquiring Mi-17 for the Afghan military, as they did for Iraq. However, Congress ended this in 2012 and the U.S. pressured the Afghan military to adopt the UH-60 Black Hawk.

The Afghans were unfamiliar with the iconic medium-sized American utility helicopter. They had to have completely retrained pilots and mechanics with extensive practical support from thousands of American contractors. Even if the Afghan military had not collapsed dramatically in August 2021, it would have taken, according to a U.S. official, until the mid-20s, before the Afghans could completely keep their Black Hawks alone.

While post-2003 Iraq acquired the F-16 fighters and the main M1 Abrams battle tanks from the United States, it decided to continue buying most of its helicopters from Russia.

Baghdad requested a possible sale of U.S. Apache AH-64 attack helicopters in January 2014, but ended up opting for Russian equivalents. The Mi-35 and Mi-28 Iraq acquired in the mid-2010s were easier to operate and integrate into their armed forces, due to their previous experience with previous variants. In addition, Moscow did not attribute any commitment to sales, which Washington would undoubtedly have done with a sale of Apache.

Iraq was also much happier to purchase additional Mi-17s instead of looking for Black Hawks for reasons similar to those of the Afghan military. Would it have, as in Afghanistan, undoubtedly faced considerable difficulties ?? to integrate the Black Hawk into its armed forces.

All these decisions made perfect sense for Iraq at the time. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the adverse effects of the supply chain problems that followed at the IqAAC may leave Baghdad wishing in retrospect to have diversified its fleet of rotary-wing aircraft by buying at least some American helicopters.
