Meet the mun
name — Lucille
pronouns — She/Her
preferred comms — DM or Discord
name of muse — Lucie (no, she's not a self insert xD)
experience in RP — Since 9 years old in messenger and metroflog (I'm 27 right now) roleplay phorums when I was 13 to 17 years old and then in-live roleplaying at 18 since now. I started roleplaying in Tumblr in 2018 I think.
best experiences — I started roleplaying as Lucie here on Tumblr when I was going through a very severe depression. I met a lot of people, and I had a ship roleplay that I loved. This inspired me greatly, enabling me to start drawing again and to experience emotions. I even went so far as to visit the Spanish army base in a Lucie cosplay and took some pictures. Roleplaying helped me a lot <3
pet peeves / dealbreakers —I had a really bad experience in the past, so I don't follow accounts with a huge rules page full of DON'Ts because anything can create a misunderstanding xd. "Don't follow me if... blablabla. You can like but don't ask, you can follow but don't interact if... blablabla." Bruh, if I have to read the penal code to interact with you, I prefer to just skip.
muse preference ( fluff, angst, smut ) — Three are fine. I don't like the first-meeting roleplays, but I can do it anyway; sometimes, they are necessary, especially with OCs.
plot or memes — Both is good.
long or short replies — Again, both is good.
best time to write — at night before bed, I suppose.
Are you like your muse — Nope. I wish hahaha I really admire her

Dear ASHTON PILLSBURY-SCHUESTER,
It is with great pleasure we invite you admission to Joie University! Welcome to the Thunderclap family!
-
Congratulations, SAM! Please be sure to check the New Members’ Checklist and send in your character’s account within 24 hours from now. We cannot wait to see all that you will bring to this roleplay! We love you already!
OOC INFORMATION: Name/Alias; pronouns: Sam; she/her Age, Timezone: 22, CST Activity, short explanation: 6/10 I have college and work but I’ll be on as much as possible while I procrastinate. Ships: Ash/chemistry Anti-Ships: Ash/forced (except for plot) Triggers: RFP Preferred photo for Character’s ID (please give a link): https://images.app.goo.gl/CxNYDnoc3AihKodc9 Anything else: RFP
IC INFORMATION: Full Name (First, Middle, Last): Ashton Dominic Pillsbury-Schuester FC: Logan Lerman Age/Year at University (Freshman [1st Year], Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student): 18/Freshman Birth date (MONTH DAY, YEAR): 04/01/2000 Hometown (please be sure to check the hometowns listed for characters your muse is related to!): Littleton, Colorado Gender/Pronouns: Male: he/him/his Sexuality: bi curious Major(s): Social Work Minor(s) [optional]: Creative Arts Housing request (remember, only the president of a Greek Organization is required to live at a Greek House to be in it!): Schuester Dormitory Extracurriculars (Click here for the list. Be sure to specify any executive board positions [i.e. president, secretary, etc.] If something isn’t listed, please put it here and we will add it to the masterlist!): Art Club, I’m All Ears, Peer Listening Group, Cross Country Greek Life Affiliation [optional] (Please be sure to specify any executive board positions [i.e. president, pledge educator, etc.] or if your character is not yet a member, but plans to rush): Alpha Xi Lambda
CHARACTER PROFILE: [At least] 3 Headcanons for your character:
Ashton loves his siblings very much, he looks up to them, especially Schuyler who took on a protective role of the younger siblings. He especially enjoyed spending time doing art with Schuyler and Ariel. He doesn’t quite have the talent for cooking like Austin, but Ashton enjoyed being around him when he was feeling down because the “class clown” always made him smile again.
Once when he was 13, Ashton was feeling incredibly low and had been feeling very disconnected from his siblings and tried to run away from home because he thought his family didn’t need him or care for him. He suffered from middle child syndrome because he thought the twins were the stars of the family being the oldest sons, then Ariel was important being the only girl, then there was the baby brother who would always be the baby so he felt like he had no role in the family. Thankfully he was found at the Greyhound station when the staff called the local police because they were concerned when he was buying a ticket out of state alone.
Will tried to get Ashton interested in singing and dancing because none of the older kids seemed to be following Will into that area of interest. However, Ashton did not have the interest or aptitude for performing and Will was forced to give in. Ashton preferred to spend time reading and making art with his siblings, he would even try to help Austin bake now and again though he was more a hinderance than a help.
Ashton is more like Emma than he cares to admit. He often worries about things an 18 year old has no place worrying about and can often feel crippled by his anxiety. Cross country is a good outlet for Ashton, it gives him a sense of freedom and while he’s running he can let it all wash over him and he usually feels much better afterwards.
Ash also takes after Emma in the sense of caring for others and wanting to help as many people as he can. Growing up he realized that while his family isn’t perfect, and no family is, some kids have it so much worse and all he wants to do is help. That’s when he got the idea to be a social worker after talking to Emma about her career as a guidance councillor.
STUDENT CENSUS SURVEY: (Please answer the following questions IN CHARACTER. Responses can be as long or short as you see fit!)
What made you want to attend Joie University? Mom and Dad talk about this place all the time, they loved it here and not to mention they made a lot of donations so I know the facilities are great. What really sealed the deal for me though is that my three older siblings go to school here so it was the natural choice. What are at least 3 positive or neutral and at least 3 negative traits that you believe you possess? + Curious, Thoughtful, Compassionate, Empathetic, Imaginative. -Fidgety, Clumsy, Conforming, Self-conscious, Easily Discouraged.
Which of your traits do you value most? I think my compassion is my most valuable trait, it helps me be a good person and it’s what drives me to want to be a social worker.
How can that trait benefit the University (or its student body) as a whole? I think it makes me a great candidate to be a member of the peer listening group which I think is one of the most important groups on campus.
What do you hope to gain from your experience at JU? Aside from getting my degree I’d like to gain more self confidence and this probably sound so cliché but I want to find my own path, I don’t want to be a carbon copy of my parents I want to find what makes me special because I’m not the cool older brothers the twins, I’m not the only girl, I’m not the baby of the family. Being the middle child can be hard sometimes even though I love my siblings more than anything, I’d die for them.
What is a quote or song lyric that describes you? Sara Bareilles’ song Brave is really important to me because I like to play it when I’m struggling to express myself or feeling like what I’m doing isn’t enough and I’m doubting myself. I think everyone should be brave and do what they think is right. I think it’s also relevant to my chosen path being a Social Worker I want people to be brave and be able to tell someone when they are in trouble. “Say what you wanna say, And let the words fall out, Honestly I wanna see you be brave”

Pirates of Pugmire art by Pat Loboyko
Pirates of Pugmire, which as of my writing this, has 16 days to go and is just under 75% funded! Thank you to everyone who has back, shared, and commented so far, and I’m so excited to help bring all the new pirate rules to the Realms of Pugmire, including ship battles, bird and lizard characters, new callings, firearms, and treasure! We’d really like to get this traditionally printed and in stores, so if you would, too, or just to see manuscript previews, head over to the Kickstarter at http://kck.st/2EoRkyp, yar! But who is writing this, you ask? (We’re going to pretend like you asked. And by “we” I mean “I.”) It is I, Dixie Cochran! Yes, that’s right, I’ve taken over the blog this week while Rich and the rest of the gang who attended UK Games Expo are on their way back from England (or in Matthew’s case, back to elsewhere in England). I’m sure Rich will provide a full account when he returns next week, but until then, here’s a report from Matthew, along with some photographs he kindly sent along.
“The team of Rich, Eddy, Matt, Matthew, Klara, John, Steffie, and Chris had a fantastic time at the UK Games Expo this year, where we ran a demo table, ran over a dozen games at the Hilton, and sold product from Leisure Games to great effect! It was Onyx Path’s first time having a booth at a British convention, and the sheer number of people who thanked us for coming or showed a keen interest in our games (Pugmire, Scion, and Prince’s Gambit were standouts) was staggering.”
L to R: Matt McElroy, Rich Thomas, Chris Allen, Klara Herbøl, Steffie de Vaan, Eddy Webb, and John Burke play Prince’s Gambit! The Sabbat wins!
“We organized our very first Chronicles of Darkness tournament at the Expo, with players from each game of Vampire (run by Klara Herbøl), Werewolf (run by Chris Allen), Promethean (run by John Burke), Changeling (ran by Steffie de Vaan), and Geist (ran by Chris Handley) went on to participate in an Antarctic session of the Contagion Chronicle (run by Matthew Dawkins)! The final winner was Michael, who played his changeling from Steffie’s game, and won a prestige copy of Demon: The Descent. The tournament concept was so good we’ll aim to do something similar next year.”
Matthew and the players of the final game of the Chronicles of Darkness tournament, Stephen, Chris, Sophie, Michael, and Andrew! Congratulations, Michael!
“All in all, we had a superb time. It was great to meet freelancers who haven’t made it out to Gen Con before, the business meetings we held were fruitful, and everyone had a lot of fun. Here’s to the next one!”
The Onyx Path crew at UKGE: Matthew, Klara, Eddy, John, Steffie, Chris, Matt, and Rich! No wonder it’s been so quiet around the office this week. Wait, I work from home…
Eddy welcomes folks to the Onyx Path booth at UKGE! Look how excited he is! “You’re all good dogs!” he seems to say
Dixie again! Isn’t it just like Matthew to interrupt me on my very first blog entry here? I feel like I’m sensing a pattern. For real, though, it looks like everyone had a great time at UKGE, and I hope it’s a convention to which we return in the future! (See how I said “we” there? Maybe I’ll come next year! Who knows? I got so much done while they were gone, though…) For those of you who aren’t as familiar with me, let me actually provide a bit of my history with the company. In 2015 or so, I was chatting with Rose Bailey, just catching up, and I mentioned that though I’d gone to school intending to pursue a career in copy editing, I was having trouble finding a way into the field (at the time, I was mostly focused on fiction and comic books). She subsequently tried me out on the Demon Translation Guide and from there I moved on to supplements and eventually cores. I’d been playing White Wolf/Onyx Path games since about 1999, but for some reason hadn’t considered the RPG industry as a career path until it fell into my lap. Now, several million words edited later (I’ve lost count, but it has to be over three million at this point), I ended up stepping into a version of Rose’s former position when she left to focus on her personal projects. I’m the in-house developer for Chronicles of Darkness and Exalted, so I make sure those lines are doing what they need to, and I still edit quite a bit of our books myself, though I outsource a lot of the smaller supplements and a few core books to other editors, depending on my current workload. In addition, as many/most of you know, I’m one of the three hosts of the Onyx Pathcast, along with Eddy and Matthew, which I enjoy immensely.
It’s been a really great 16 months or so working for Onyx Path, and I look forward to doing even more in the future! Let me know in the comments if there’s anything you’d like to hear about or anyone you’d like to hear from on an upcoming Pathcast episode!
The classic Shén pantheon from Scion: Hero!
Anyway, if I seem to be stalling before I get to the actual Monday Meeting notes, it’s because we didn’t actually have a true meeting this week, what with half the staff still traveling. I have updates and teasers, as usual, but as to what we talked about in the meeting? There wasn’t a lot. (Mostly I asked Mike to give me art, which he did! Thanks, Mike!)
Now that UKGE is past, I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at PAXU, though of course bits of our team here and there will be at other conventions throughout the summer. Say hi if you see one of us!
To reiterate a couple of teasers from Rich from last week, we’ll be announcing a new developer for Scarred Lands and the projects they are overseeing once everyone gets back. Plus, on the Scarred Lands Community Content site, the Slarecian Vault, the beginning of July marks the start of a phenomenal linked adventure series you will not want to miss! Also, June 13th we’ll be starting a little treat for everyone that leads into the aforementioned July event. (Psst, it’s one we get a lot of questions about.)
The modern Shén pantheon from Scion: Hero!
One last tease before we get on to blurbs and updates, for something else that is coming soon…oh? What’s this?
Oh, sorry, that just fell out of my email, but hopefully it will help people create
Many Worlds, One Path!
(Did I do that right?)
BLURBS!

9 - What is your opinion on exclusivity? Do you practice it? Why / why not?another one of those random munday memes
Tumblr media
i don’t have anything against it inherently . i don’t usually practice it myself unless a partner i’m good friends with wants me to though . i myself don’t really feel subconscious about duplicates unless someone i regularly write with makes a duplicate of my my muse ( because then i can’t help but feel like they decided i wasn’t doing it well enough lol ) or someone i am very invested in a ship with starts shipping with a duplicate with the exact same dynamic between the two characters , but that hasn’t happened in a long time . i just don’t tend to follow duplicates because i know i have a tendency to pick up writing habits from other people and don’t want to subconsciously steal stuff from them .for tooth specifically there’s only one other person who writes her that i know of ( and that would be flossinspector who is lovely ) so asking other people for exclusivity would just essentially be directly asking someone not to write with them , and that’s silly .
13 - Have you ever thought about leaving rp? What caused it? What changed your mind?
Tumblr media
i did run off from the rpc for about … a year and a half i think ? i still roleplayed through discord though .but yeah i really suddenly shut down my blog because i was in the middle of a big emotional breakdown and included doing so ( and other things of course ) in my plan to commit suicide . but even after i got over that i was kind of glad to take a break from it , because i was actually becoming really anxious with me approaching 3000 followers .ironically i ended up remaking this blog as i was having another sort of emotional breakdown , but as i had made a lot of progress in that area , remaking it was a conscious choice to try and reignite some creative energy in myself , because i knew writing and drawing made a huge difference in how i feel on a day to day basis . and it worked ! hurray~ i’m really grateful i was ‘taken back’ in a sense .
20 - Have you ever felt pressured to write something you weren’t comfortable with?
Tumblr media
i’ve had people ask me to roleplay subjects i’m not comfortable with but nobody’s really pressured me to       CSA is a ‘common’ one I suppose , and i understand why . tooth works with children , she has to know this happens , but it’s really difficult for me to dig very deep into why she doesn’t kill every single human she knows who perpetuate it besides saying ‘she is not allowed to and sticks to her work towards the greater good with MiM instead of going vigilante even though she is tempted to when she sees these things and breaks that rule sometimes and…..’ over and over again , because i have to stick with that unless i want to change huge aspects of her character . i mean it’s obvious joyce wasn’t thinking about CSA when he designed the guardians and labeled them as good people lol , and i can only stretch things so far .back in ye old day torture porn and rape was basically what you got with cavity ( and black ice tbh ) if the pitch wasn’t ‘woobified’ into an entirely different character , and someone did try to pressure me into that , so i was hesitant to actually write it with anyone after the first pitch that introduced the ship to me in a less completely awful way left the rpc . luckily i met steph ( existsoutsideoflogic ) after a while and then short after they left @rulesfear popped up too , and despite their very different takes , both were interested in pitch being an undoubtedly dark character without making him likey’know . a rapist . so that’s neat .
27 - Do you follow people even if they don’t follow you back?
Tumblr media
sometimes i do follow people just because i like their writing so much that i simply want to be able to read it regardless of whether we interact . but typically , no . when it comes to my roleplay accounts i generally have my main investments in the characters my muse is interacting with or hopefully will in the future , for obvious reasons , so there’s not too much purpose to having my dash filled with a bunch of other characters instead . usually if i follow someone and they don’t follow back in like… a week or two , i’ll just assume they aren’t interested in my blog and unfollow them .

At least promise you’ll be back on roleplaying and writing when Lucy is back. In fact when will she be back? Maybe you still have contacts with her, even though you don’t rp?
Hey anon!First of all, I’m terribly sorry for not having been able toreply to your previous ask (because I assume it indeed was you who sent it?). There’s honestly no proper excuse I couldthrow your way in regards to my silence. All I can say is that I simply don’tknow where to even start in regardsto the whole Bill/Tom/Klum topic anymore. Truth be told, my thoughts on it areso complex and all over the place, that I rather just avoid thinking about italtogether most of the days. The mere prospect of having to word theentire mess makes me tired already. So I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed you, butI really don’t think I’d even manage to write anything substantial in the firstplace. With the tour approaching, though, I’m pretty sure I’ll be indire need of a rant soon enough, seeing how I’m convinced Klum is going to join it as well at some point. I also thinkthe tour will provide me with some much needed first hand insight as well, which will be crucial in putting the pieces of what the fuck is going on togetherin a more coherent way. But let me not dwell on that other ask too long now, andaddress the matter of RPing at hand.I can’t promise that I’ll be back roleplaying - at least not in the format that you’re used to read, that is. Iwish I could, and I’d love nothing more than to jump right back in, but just asmuch as you’ve been left in the dark, I’ve been left in the dark as well. You see,I don’t even know if Lucy will becoming back at all.For lack of a more appropriate wording: she bailed on me.She’d hate this wording, I’m sure (I still know you so well, Lu) – she would think it’s harsh of me to say so,and hold a grudge against me for putting it so bluntly. But that’s literallywhat it was - or well - is. You might think I know something more about thematter, seeing how I’m part of what we had going here – hell, Imyself would expect of myself to know something more as well! – butalas, I really don’t.One day she was here, then the next - she was gone. The timeline of how this came to be is blurry when I think back on it. It’sbeen quite a few months in between then and now after all. But I think it allstarted with her being online less and less in the end of 2017/beginning 2018.She was working on her thesis back then, and asked me for some space – she is awoman who is very much so enjoys her educational prospects, and someone who cherishesher career a lot. A bit of a Hermione Granger, if you will. Her disappearanceswere not so far stretched out at first, but as time passed by, she only ever came online everyfew weeks, until she finally disappeared for good in March of 2018. That meansthe last I heard from her was actually more than a year ago now.And it evenfeels longer than that, in retrospective.I tried texting her on Skype a few times. Although I was hurt and feltbetrayed, I didn’t really word that out loud to her, because knowing her, she’dtake that as ammunition to justify her being away even more (“how could I evercome back, knowing you were mad at me” sorta scenario). So my texts consistedmostly of saying that I’m sorry if she felt pressured by me in any way, andthat I’d love to have her back.I still stand by it: I miss her. I am not someone who holds grudges, and I amnot someone who lets people go lightly once I hold them as dear to my heart as Lucy. She still holds, and probably alwayswill hold, a special place in my heart – she is an extraordinary individual whocomplemented me as a writer and artist, but more importantly as a person and asa friend, as well.I’d love nothing more than for her to come back and fill mydays and nights with artistic excitement and nerdy blabber. But I would belying if I’d say I don’t feel hurt, still. So long answer short: yes, I have ways to reach her. More than she mightimagine herself, actually. I could reach out to her irl friends as well, if everything elsefailed. I have my ways. The thing is though – I don’t think Lucy wants me to do that.I doubt she evenwants to be contacted at all.I’m pretty damn sure she knows I’m still around here. She knows where to find me if she would ever choose to do so. Andthis isn’t about pride – as said, I did try reaching out to her a couple oftimes (to no avail). This is about basic human decency. Lucy chose to walk outon me, so I feel like it isn’t exactly on me to pursue (nor persuade) her any further. That is a step she must make herself at this point. If she wants to be away from me, then I don’t feel like intruding her personalspace is really the way to go. She distanced herself from me, not vice versa, and protruding myself into her face just doesn’t seem fair.I love her, so I respect her decision not to be around me, even if I amdisappointed and hurt by not knowing exactly why she decided to just wordlesslyabandon ship.My suspicions are (ones that I voiced out to her as well, way back), that shefelt way too “imprisoned” with what we were doing, but had no idea how toproperly break it to me without hurting my feelings. I told her numerous timesthat if she ever gets bored with what we are doing, she can just tell me so,and that we’ll try to work our way around the issue. See, when I made thisblog, I was always very specific in what I wanted to do. I always wanted toexplore the relationship the twins have in a very “canon” way, if I may call itso. A straightforward, and very day to day like way. I wanted to exploreeveryday issues that they were facing, wanted to take the life they shared withus on social media and make it into a coherent little psychological explorationof their relationship. I was monotonous as fuck. And I think Lucy eventually grew tired of that. Of me. She wouldtell me, repeatedly so, that that’s not the case, but I don’t know if she was being entirelytruthful in that. It certainly doesn’t seem so now. BUt it makes sense. She was always the one that was gleaming with ideas. Ideas fornew and exciting things, AUs, all of it! In that regard, we were different.I feel like maybe I was holding her back – like maybe with me, she couldn’treally fulfil her full potential. I figured that that’s why she made a new blogaccount as well, eventually - in the late stages of our online interactions. She would say it was “because she had way too manythings piled up on her old blog, and couldn’t keep track anymore”. That “she justwanted to start fresh with all the other people she was RPing with, and that ithad nothing to do with what we were doing”. But I don’t think that was reallyall there was to it. Part of it, maybe, but not the entire reasoning. I wasshocked by her making another account, and it left a bitter taste in my mouth. She didn’t tell me she was making one, nevermind why she was doing it, so Ifigured she just wanted to start fresh with me as well, which meant ignoring the building upof our characters that we had going on for more than two solid years at that point. And that was harsh. We were deathbykaulitz andmaptoourescape, you know. It was an experience. It was ongoing, and personal, and very close to my heart. And with her making a new blog, it felt like shedidn’t really feel the same way anymore. Maybe that’s when “the beginning ofthe end” truly began. Perhaps she just wanted to start anew, and felt likethere was no way to do it without hurting my feelings. Perhaps she just feltlike there’s not much more she could begin to do with me any longer. That itwas boring, and repetitive, and exhausting, and unexciting.Last I heard of her, she told me she was “ashamed that she couldn’t keep up herpromises of doing more”. That “she didn’t keep to her word she gave me, when shesaid everything will go back to normal once she finished writing up her thesis”.She said, and I quote this time: “I value reciprocity a lot. Whenever I receive, I want to give back. And I couldn’t do that.”Maybe at the end of the day, what drove her away washer inability to understand that I really wouldbe okay with it eventually if she truthfully told me that she just can’t do this with me anymore.Maybe what drove her away was her thinking “I can’t give back to her as much asshe’s giving to me anymore, so I guess the best way to go about it is just toabandon ship entirely and never come back again, because not facing it is lesspainful than having to admit it and along the way maybe hurt her feelings”.As much as it pains me to say it, I haveto:her leaving me was more painful than her being tired of my RP skills couldever be. But me being me, I still want her back. Perhaps she mightthink I feel like I only lost a RP partner that day. But it was more than that. She robbed me of a very dear friend, and never gave the two of us anopportunity to actually work around whatever the issue at hand might have been.Iimagine she is happier now. I can’t begin to tell you about the amount of timesI went into the GOT RP community, to maybe find her excellent writing amongstthe sea of other, new people – better role players and better friends. Tryingto find her amongst the Cerseis and Jeamies that would excite her more than Iever could. It still gnaws at my conscience that I seemingly wasn’t enough. Butwhether she’s happy in a new found fandom, or maybe just blissfully busy withonly her career which I know she loves so much – honestly, there’s not much moreI could ask of her.Even through all of my misery, I love to see my friends thrive and be happy.Hell, I’m someone who at 13 years old wrote a long ass letter to a girl who wasalso in love with my crush to go get him if she is what makes him truly happylmao. I’d choose my friend’s happiness over mine, anytime.I hope she isdoing well. That she’s happy and healthy wherever life’s road is taking her.Maybe a bit of a TMI answer. But I feltlike getting it off my chest. You deserve to know what went up with us, atleast vaguely. And she also deserves to know how I feel, if she ever stumblesonto this - what seems to have turned into an open letter of sorts.GG for reading through this pile of emotional crap if you managed to get thisfar lol.But most of all, thank you infinitely for caring. For being interested in what we did, and in whatI do here. I never thought anyone would really care for what we were cooking upwith our roleplay, and the fact that there’s people out there who care, andread, and appreciate humbles me so fucking much. I don’t give you nearlyenough credit or appreciation – perhaps because it’s so hard for me to imagineanyone would take a minute of their time to indulge in something I made. But know that when it hits me, it hits me hard. There is no better feeling than knowing someone loves and enjoys what you created.Much love, and in hopes I didn’t disappoint you all too terribly,Tina

Rules: Answer the questions you’re given, write 11 of your own and tag 11 people.
(1.) Is there anything you dislike about the character(s) you play? OC or otherwise?  How difficult he can be. He doesn’t make plotting or interactions easy for anyone and it’s hard to be spontaneous with him unless he’s under some influence. It gets bothersome at times when you see muses you as the mun like, but know your OC would never have anything to do with them.
(2.) How many languages can you speak?  I can only speak English. I took over 2 years of Mandarin but still couldn’t properly speak it, though I can read it pretty decently. Same with Japanese - took 4 years but at most can just read it. I understand a lot of Spanish and some Korean. I took Arabic in high school, but I suck at it. Only know like 3 words now.
(3.) Where did you first go on vacation?  I remember as a child when my parents were still together, we went on a road trip from Chicago all the way to Disneyland in California. We went through Colorado, I got to hand feed a giraffe, I fell on a cactus, I cried about not being able to go on the monorail, had my first BBQ sauce pizza (which I hated) -- I think that was my first vacation.
(4.) Do you have any potentially-unpopular opinions about your character or the fandom that they’re involved in?  Since Myles started off as a Starfighter OC, I guess you’re asking me if I have any unpopular opinions on Starfighter? Do you have 8 hours?  I understand that Starfighter is/was supposed to be a smut comic and was actually supposed to stop after “chapter 1″ but got so popular that the author decided to continue writing it. I understand that a majority of the plot is based around two dudes fuckin’ and I understand that expecting or asking for more than that is silly.
BUT THERE IS SO MUCH POTENTIAL JUST WASTED. THE WHOLE REASON I EVEN FUCKIN JOINED THAT FANDOM WAS BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT BETTER AND YOU KNOW WHAT?  I fucking did. Hamlet gives such a great basis and outline for amazing world building that just ends up falling flat because the story is focused on well detailed dick draws (which are great btw, I won’t slight her for that). The concept of the last surviving humans fighting against an alien collective using their own tech against them just gets my dick hard, but all of that is sort of thrown to way side and lost under “who emotionally betrayed who” and “I love you now even if I didn’t at the beginning” nonsense. You can still have a great romance story OR EVEN PWP?? But establish it in a world that makes fucking sense. There are all of these aspects that we’ll never get answers on that she’s just thrown into the story as a vehicle to get to the next sex scene and it just rustles my fucking jimmies.
I had to stop writing in the fandom because I honestly am incapable of writing with the new people who come in -- nothing against them and their writing abilities, I’m sure they’re great, but everyone always comes in like “I’m looking for an Abel for my Cain” or vice versa, or just some smutty locker room pwp and weird Commander Daddy Doms -- just things I’ve read over and over and over again that have just become absolutely bland.
DID YOU KNOW??? There are whole constellations?? of crystals floating through space? Shattered diamonds and acidic clouds?? Did you know?? that there are 3 different theorized ways to bend space and time to create warp drives? Could you imagine being the final ship BSG style trying to float your way to what essentially might be your grave in space avoiding stars that are literally eating each other so that you can fight an alien race that has destroyed not only one, but many of your species homelands???
BUT WAIT, LEMMIE GET A DICK IN THIS SPACE CRAFT FOR A MINUTE AND WE CAN BICKER ABOUT HOW U LOOK LIKE MY EX.KJDHGJKGHKDJGHS IT JUST MAKES ME SO MAD. DONT GET ME STARTED, I FEEL VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT SPACE.
(5.) How many kids would you like in the future? 0 is also an acceptable answer!  z e r o -- I can barely take care of myself, how am I supposed to take care of another life??
(6.) Have you ever broken down into tears because of writing a roleplay scene?  No, idk, I don’t get that emotional about things? Last time I cried was because I was on drugs after my surgery and there was no ice for my tea.
(7.) Where did you first get started roleplaying?  Gaiaonline.com sgjkdhskgjs  I still have my account.
(8.) Quick! Make a list. FIVE FILMS TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE.  That I haven’t seen already??? uhhhh UHHHHHH 1. Schindler’s List 2. Breakfast At Tiffany’s  3. Shape of Water  4. Hurt Locker 5. 13 Assassins
(9.) If we had to ask your friends to explain you in five words or less, how do you think that they’d describe you?  avoidant, funny, no-shit taking, emotionally strong, positive ((I guess????))
(10.) What is one of your life mottos that helps you get through each and every day?  “No regrets.” “No excuses, nobody cares.” “But will it kill you?”
(11.) Do you feel comfortable writing NSFW themes? Hahahahaha WELL.  Yes - I’m comfortable with plotting out the nasty nast, but when it comes to actually writing it? It takes me forever because I get really really really embarrassed. I once talked to Lex about lube and it was just me screaming uncomfortably for about 15 minutes, but ask me about nasty fuckin and I gotchu.
Rules: Answer the questions you’re given, write 11 of your own and tag 11 people.
(1.) Hardest thread/plot you’ve ever done and why? Did you complete it? (2.) A song that triggers a memory and what happened (3.) Favorite subject in school (4.) Do you have any potentially-unpopular opinions about your character or the fandom that they’re involved in? (5.) Would you chose to be immortal? (6.) Have you ever considered veganism / vegetarianism? Why or why not?  (7.) Who/What was your first OC? Describe them. (8.) Be honest... how honest are you with your friends? Your family? (9.) What would be your superpower and would you use it for good? (10.) What did you do before Tumblr? (11.) Guilty pleasure food

trauma talk under cut. cw for irl csa/p*dophilia/gr00ming and h*mophobia okay. also w*ncest. i just need to get this off of my chest
so ever since ive been watching s*pernatural/engaging with fancontent i have been super super super paranoid of running into the person who, um.... let’s just say, groomed me with s*pernatural stuff. like, would show me her de-aged (like, elementary aged) explicit w*ncest roleplays that was eerily similar to what she did to me as a kid (which was a whole other can of worms that i somehow had repressed until we were sharing a bed at a c*mic c*n and then a massive panic attack, s/o to the cl*ssic d*ctor who f*ndom for getting me thru that night honestly, okaaaay, anyway), she even borrowed my ipod touch to write it once because she was going thru “w*ncest withdrawals”, would make me do roleplays with her and her other adult friends, sent me explicit fanart and talked about how sexy the actors were, also was a MASSIVE homophobe and her mom told her that she didnt like me because i was “obsessed with gay sex” when i was THIRTEEN (she wouldve been 18) because i watched g/lee, and she would force me to watch s*pernatural and, like, check my n*tflix account (i gave her the login bc her born again chr*stian mom wouldnt let her watch s*pernatural) to make sure i was watching s*pernatural.... god everything was just so awful. i didnt even want to watch s*pernatural, it was way too dark/adult for me. also i was a lesbian! i wrote a letter to future me when i was 13 that my teacher mailed out when i graduated hs and basically the two things i said were “i think [redacted] might be abusive and a sexual predator and also i think i might be a lesbian” lol. and i did not want to be seeing these weird shirtless guys and she shamed me so hard for it. like, she caused so much internalized homophobia... and obviously a lot of other traumas... thankfully i confessed to my mom (never told her about what happened when i was a kid but i kind of think she suspects but she doesn’t pry) and she was a superhero, she cut off [redacted]’s mom, who was her friend from when she was a born again chr*stian (which she refers to as a cult, like, she is an atheist and, like, a liberal who is slowly becoming more radical with time, also a member of lgbt community, we love her, she is the best) and has believed and respected me when i tell her about how evil [redacted] was to me. and when i did cut her out of my life i had just turned 15 and she had just turned 20, if that shows how fucked up this whole thing was. and like there is so much more that i cant even face myself to this day. this is the first time im actually writing/talking about some of these things....
ANYWAY back to the original point, is that I have NO idea how active [redacted] is in the fandom today, i have her blocked on every platform imaginable. i made her make a tumblr back in 2013 but at least that tumblr has stayed blank, she was on facebook roleplay groups and i have her roleplay facebooks blocked bc she kept making new ones to contact me lol. I do remember that she was a shitty roleplayer lol but what if she ended up writing, idk, some epic novel length fanfic that i read and comment and she somehow finds me? or through tumblr? even if she doesnt find me i would feel so sick if i found out that it was her’s. i dont remember if she shipped d*stiel back then but that was almost 7 years ago now. and i obviously am not reading w*ncest lol. though i do remember that she liked d/ean and it makes me feel dirty because i like him because he reminds me of myself.
so its like. such a fucking bummer because i cant even enjoy this campy thing that is right up my ally because i’m constantly being triggered while i engage with it. or i am just so afraid i will bump into her. like i scout every blog before i follow it and stuff like that. i just panicked for 30 minutes because the author of a fanfic i just finished and enjoyed had the same first name as her middle name. (though going thru the archive told me that it wasnt her because in 2013, before [redacted] ever had a tumblr, the author was posting g/lee and [redacted] always called me gross and made fun of me for watching g/lee.)
and it’s 7:30 am so i am just gonna go to bed now

Roleplaying/Writing
My favorite muse(s) of theirs and why:
Vee only got one muse! u v u Or at least I only know one, lolol and that’s Sharon. Such a smol, cute strawberry. I’d eat.
My favorite interaction/thread of theirs:
Each thread where she’s just naive. I can’t help. She’s cute when she shows how unhealthy naive she is--- :’’)
My thoughts on their unique characterization/interpretation of their muse(s):
I love it, how Sharon isn’t simply one of those 0815 charas. I mean. Look. Even her parents didn’t die in a car accident ( more over - they’re even still alive! HURRAAAY! ). If you look at all those other 100 OCs of other people, that’s already really creative.
Also no overdramatic backstory. No neko… no mafiawife and also no alive skeletton....oh, the question is about other thinks?Nmmh… it’s hard to say how different the interpretations are. But she’s rather close to MC. So she’s good in my opinion = u = I already kind of liked her by our first interactions, but she got better and developed more and more.
My thoughts on their writing style as a whole:
Say one more time that your writing style is bad and I’m gonna kick you- ò u ó
Situation(s)/Plot(s) I’d love to see their muse(s) in:
There are so many plots I’d love to see her~~ * rubs hands *
Someone else I love seeing them interact with:
There are some actually. I like their interactions with. Like @turnedtohatredornah ( since she’s the child of our muses ), @mysticgod707. But also with @psychoticlcve and @box-of-muses actually.
Anything else I want to say about their roleplaying:
It’s funny, angsty, fluffy… just everything a sock needs in it’s life u v u
If We Know Each Other
What I Think Are Their Best Qualities:
She’s definitely a really good listener and hardworking person. Also her personality is one of the best qualities of her.
What I Think Are Their Strengths:
Definitely her mentality. Often, we two appear to me to be rather similar. But then there are things again, where we’re so different from each other. Of course you can get anxious about a few things too. As I already said, she’s also such a hardworking person, mostly for her university and I really enjoy it, when she tells me what happened, when she needs some cheering up ( even if I’m bad at it ) or needs some help ( even if I mostly simply butt in without getting asked, ops- :’) Sorry )
And she’s a great artist~!
A Memorable OOC Interaction Of Ours:
There’s so much I remember tbh. Each awkward talk… our first talks. I still read sometimes our old conversation on my old Saeran account, even the first big text you sent, when the ship sunk and still, I kinda have the feeling as if this would be one of the main-thing how our friendship begun. I mean, after all it also was the first conversation in which I found out that we both dislike onions.
There sure were ups and also many deeps in our one year of friendship. But we never gave up each other, no matter how upset our fights may were. On the next day, we always would talk it out and I really appreciate it tbh. Somehow I do have the feeling, that it also helps me a bit.
I also remember the time when we would always deny the SaeRon ship :’)Back then, we weren’t really able to celebrate Sharon’s birthday because of the hardships you had in your life back then. Yes, I even remember that, as if it would have been yesterday, as I was really worried about you to that time. Tried to figure out, if I could cheer you up somehow ( idk anymore if I did or not. But I know that I tried to distract you RPing ).
Honestly, I even would celebrate your own birthday with you. Just to distract you a bit, since I’m sure that you’re still not over it. But I’m a bit too far away, so--- * rolls away *
...that became now a bit long, didn’t it? I hope I didn’t say too much @ _ @ I just wrote what I thought, eeh.Anyway, I’m glad to have you as my left sock. I know, no friendship lasts forever. But I definitely appreciate it, that you’re still my friend.
Why Others Should RP With Them:
Because she’s a good strawberry.
How Others Should Approach Them:
...go into the train, dance in a circle and clap your hands over your head. What kind of stupid question is that tbh? :’) Just write them? I can assure, that Vee can’t bite someone ( else she would have to eat her screen… )
Other Roleplayers I’d Recommend To Them: I’m bad at recommending u v u
Anything else I want to say about them: Definitely a cutie
If We Have/Plan To Interact Together
A plot I’d like to write with them: Always free for more verses with you u v u! ( When you actually have plots on your mind but you’re holding back because 13 is already really much--- )
A muse I want to introduce to them: She knows all my muses. Even Sehun. I swear. Sometimes she knows them more well than I thought-
A ship/broship I’d like to propose to them: Sockship, I mean. We got our ship already since a year ( and more ) and it’s called SaeRon u v u ( 1.0 - 4.0 ) and ShaRay!
A thread with them I’m excited about: About which am I not excited? :’)
Anything else I want to say:
…YOU SERIOUS?! I JUST POURED MY WHOLE HEART OUT ALREADY :’’’’) Eeeeeh.
I appreciate our ship. It’s cute and I love it and SaeRon since 1 year forever and… JUST WAIT UNTIL SAERAN PROPOSES TO HER U v U It’ll be cute. I swear. I’m sorry that I’m not sorry for AS!Saeran’s behavior btw… and also that I’m not sorry for all the angst I sent to you… and also that I’m really lazy lately :’)
Also, that you never freaked out or judged me, because of the way I am or because I get anxious and upset about simply the smallest things. Until now, I could always talk about it with you and you’re just still willing to stay my friend ; u ; thank you for that

Personality
Ruby used to be a pretty quiet kid to the point where people generally forget she was even in the room but in more recent times, she is an outspoken and rebellious type. She lives the world like she doesn’t really care about all that much but the words that spin in her head are much more than what she claims. Her brain is chaotic which makes her actions chaotic. A lot of her flaws are linked to her emotions and any extreme emotions come out of nowhere it seems because she bottles them up until she can’t hold them in no more. Ruby isn’t the type to stand there and watch things happen that she thinks are wrong which often puts her in difficult situations. She often doesn’t think about her actions much before doing them which leads to mistakes and she has a good few of those. Despite how she used to be, she is now a fire cracker with a hell of a lot of sass but she yearns to be the girl she once was but at this point, she doesn’t have a clue how to get to that point. She figures too much has changed to ever be that girl again. She feels like she has always been let down so she rarely gives her full self to anyone. She feels like everyone has a hidden agenda around her so she fails to trust people. If/When she is proven right about this, she doesn’t tend to get mad because she expects it but sometimes this is all one big self fulfilling prophecy.
Past
Ruby is the youngest child and the only daughter among five boys. Her parents are big names in the business empire of oil which allowed their children to be lavished with riches and they all were pushed to fulfil their dreams. The parents were big fans of rock music so all the boys had classic rock names. Axel after Axl Rose by Guns & Roses. Lennon after John Lennon. Billy after Billy Joel. Jude from the Beatles ‘Hey Jude’. And finally Ruby from ‘Ruby, don’t take your love to town’. Axel was pushed in sport, primarily baseball, where he plays for the New York Mets. Lennon was pushed in to law where he is now a lawyer in Atlanta and often helps his father’s oil company. Billy was pushed in to film where he now helps to produce and direct movies. Jude was pushed in to busniess so he could one day take over the business. Ruby was pushed in to fashion by her mother to take over her mother’s business when she retired. She hated the fashion and just didn’t care about it. That’s when she preferred to be quiet and hide in the shadows. Instead, she found a love for computers and more importantly hacking. At the age of 12, she had hacked in to her father’s business accounts four times as well as other big businesses and never got caught once.
When she started showing signs of magic at the age of 13 when her puberty was hitting her hard and her emotions were the hardest to control, that’s when her mother’s guilt began to show. No one in her family had magic. Not her mother and not her ‘father’ so when questioned about this, her mother confessed that Ruby was the product of an affair with a warlock when she was on a business trip to Milan. Although her father, who once loved his daughter more than the boys, remained loyal to his wife and vowed to keep it secret, he turned very cold with Ruby. He didn’t care what she did with her life as much as he did with the boys and let her get on with it. This was the first let down. She felt like she lost her family that day even if they did allow her to remain a part of the family and have their name, she wasn’t a true Hendrix and she felt like an outcast in her own home. That was the first big shift in her personality. She was still quiet at home that she could hide from everyone but so well that she could start to sneak out since no one really cared much to look for her or check she was still in the house. At the age of 16, she was out partying most nights but would still go to school the next day and ace her exams. Her brain was like a sponge for information so once it was in, it was hard to get out.
She was often forgotten by the media anyway since she was the ghost child of the family. All of her siblings were quite big and famous so she could simply slide under the radar which was perfect for her. When in school, not many people knew who she was which meant she could hide it for the most part. However, she did make the mistake when she met a guy in school that transferred who she liked. He was big in to his sports and his favourite athlete happened to be her brother. She really liked the guy so she got him to a game in New York and let him meet her brother. Then he began to sponge off of her to spend more time with her brother than her and that was the second let down. That’s when she realised people would only use her to get what they really wanted. It wasn’t the first time. Another friend in school wanted to be famous so tried to get close to Ruby to try and get noticed by Billy and cast in one of his films which the friend didn’t succeed in doing.
When it was time to go to college, Ruby rejoiced in the idea of getting away from her current surroundings. No more atmosphere at home. She could start fresh and hope no one knew who she was. Since her parents didn’t care much about pushing her in to a big name college like her brothers, she decided to go to Whitmore college and study Programming since she already had a knack for computers and coding. She vowed not to tell anyone about her past or who she really was. She often told people a fake last night as a precaution for any of this just in case they had seen her name somewhere in the papers. This seemed to add a little bit of mystery to her for most people because she was so private about her life but she intended on making a new one here.
Present
Ruby is just about to graduate from college with fantastic results. When she runs a little low on money, she often hacks in to some form of business and siphons some money from it to keep her afloat with her dangerous habits. Being close to the mysterious town of Mystic Falls, she has found herself drawn to it for a couple of years now. Although she doesn’t entirely trust anyone to teach her magic, she is curious about what she can learn in this little town. Ruby has learnt to better control her magic but by no means is she fully in control. There are often outbursts with it that she can’t control but she is trying to do better. She intends on doing freelance programming once she has her degree so she got herself a small apartment in the little town where she can do that from but other than that, she is just more curious about what the small town can teach her. She knows quite a bit about the supernatural and knows a few spells to protect herself. She still intends on laying low about her true identity which isn’t too hard when no one knows who she is anyway.
Connections
Carson St James
Doesn’t really know him overly other than occasionally smoking weed with him and some other people. He’s more of a friend of a friend type of person to her.
Riley Jace Miller
Since Riley’s shop popped up in town, she only ever goes to him for her tattoos now. She’s had a few drinks with him before and they seem to get along fine with fun banter but she still holds herself back from getting to know him entirely.
Charlotte Fell
She’s been to a few parties with Charlotte in the past and surprisingly would call her the closest thing she had to a friend. She still remains secretive around her but they have a good laugh and fun.

CHARACTER PROFILE:
Kara spent the first few years of her life barely seeing her dad. She was never one to shy away from questioning her mom why her dad was never around, even if the answer was always the same ‘he was away being a big time recruiter’. When he did return when she was five and of course, asked him. He said the same thing their mom did, and being the small child she was and just wanting to believe it wasn’t anything more, she believed him. After that she became a total daddy’s girl and always wanted to spend time with him to make up for the lost 5 years. At least up until when she was 13 when she began to question things even more. She put some distance between them and lost her trust in her dad, just from the gut feeling her dad had been lying to her and Cole their whole lives. She won’t say her dad treated her and her brother badly, she just can’t trust someone absent for such a long period of time and use an excuse that sounds flimsy but she felt it was useless asking again because she was sure the same lie would be told every time.
Like her brother, Kara was a bit of an overachiever. She joined as many clubs as she could in school and would cry if she made less than an A on anything in school. She was never athletic so while she wanted to play a sport to impress their famous recruiter dad, it was just never something she could do so she gave up on that. She got into writing instead, realizing that was her real gift.
Kara was a little bit of an attention hog, at least as a small child(although that didn’t fully go away as she got older). Rumor has it, or as her mom told her, she threw a fit when Cole was born just a few days after her second birthday because she didn’t want to share her birthday season or attention with him. She ended up growing close to him, but even then she was happier when the attention was on her. Even when they did little musical performances for the family, she tried to make sure the spotlight was on her. Didn’t always succeed considering her brother was more talented than her but that didn’t stop her from trying.
STUDENT CENSUS SURVEY:
(Please answer the following questions IN CHARACTER. Responses can be as long or short as you see fit!)
What made you want to attend Joie University? It seemed like a great school with a great writing program and lots of extra curricular activities.
What are at least 3 positive or neutral and at least 3 negative traits that you believe you possess? Positive: Hardworking, kind, logical Negative: Stubborn, Envious, Hesitant
Which of your traits do you value most? I value the fact that I am logical and hardworking, and even if it is a negative trait, I value the fact that I am hesitant, it keeps me from being disappointed and hurt by other people.
How can that trait benefit the University (or its student body) as a whole?I don’t know how it would value the student body but I believe me being hardworking and kind could possibly bring good things to the school if I try hard enough.
What do you hope to gain from your experience at JU?  I hope to gain even more knowledge of my writing abilities to help me become the best journalist I could be after I graduate.
What is a quote or song lyric that describes you? ““And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”

Part 13 Alignment May Vary: Combat and Character Hooks
Welcome to another Journey Log! This week takes my three players through an intense combat as they wrap up some loose ends. It is the climax of the first act of Tomb of Haggemoth, after which they will truly strike out across the Moon Sea to follow the Oracle’s cryptic instructions. In this post, I’ll be focusing on how to build effective encounters in D&D 5th Edition and also the importance of using character hooks in your game. But fist, some catch up with the story...
Tumblr media
Return to Ottoman’s Dock
The Butcher of Skago now considers the players to be his “investment,” and he intends to ensure that they make good on their promise to bring him the treasure of Haggemoth. So he decides to sail alongside their ship, while his sniper (Haymish) sails onboard the Mankey Bastard with the players.
The journey to Ottoman’s dock has one event: Abenthy has not been feeling well ever since leaving the LaCroix mansion and now the players discover why. The key they picked up from the Ooze house was actually the last piece of the Ooze and has been hiding on board their ship disguised as Abenthy’s belt. From there, it has been slowly draining him of his life! The group works out what has been happening and destroys the Ooze, once and for all, completing a sidequest and ending a possible plotline if the ooze had made ity back to civilization...
At Ottoman’s dock, the players discover that Marcus, the priest they had left to deal with Rose the Slaver, has been murdered. They are presented with a plan for revenge by Lisa, one of the slave girls they freed last time who was living with Marcus. She tells them to either help her burn Rose’s establishment to the ground, or enter by stealth and try and find evidence of Rose’s wrongdoing to present to the mayor of Ottoman’s dock.
The group vacillates over what to do. Twyin and the half-orc Rhazel are in favor of the burning—it’s simpler and, to Twyin’s mind, cleaner. But Karrina thinks it is riskier and when Abenthy realizes burning will mean the death of the innocent slaves who are still working the establishment he refuses to go along with that plan. Majority rules, and they move in via stealth, through the basement passage they found last time.
This doesn’t go quite as planned. Rose is transporting a special “guest” this evening, and so has the basement under guard by Ratzotto pirates. The players try to dispatch them quietly, but let one get away. He instantly runs upstairs to warn Rose. Worse, they try to take the special guest, a young girl, with them. This goes incredibly bad when the girl suddenly turns on them (Rose’s mind controlling orders) and attacks them with the power of her mind, killing Rahzel (their half orc, colorblind mercenary) in the ensuing fight. During this, Rose arrives with reinforcements and a massive fight breaks out that nearly kills Twyin (he becomes the target of Rose’s imp, who takes spider form and continually bites him, while Rose holds Twyin still with her spells). This battle also presents a problem for Abenthy: Rose sends her enslaved bodyguards at him. He knows these are innocents under mind control, so he tries to hold back and knock them out, but thanks to a couple HUGE damage rolls, he accidentally kills one of them, cracking his skull open like an egg. Falling to his knees in the midst of combat, Abenthy begins to pray for his salvation while the others desperately try to fight off Rose (for two whole rounds he prays, an excellent bit of roleplaying)!
In the end the players persevere and force Rose to flee in the form of a dark green magical mist (she quaffed a potion of mist form). Where she departs to is unknown to the players. In fact, she makes her escape to a ship that is waiting for her and from there across the sea to answer to her master, a person far more devious than she. How that goes you may discover in a future blog.
Defeating Rose breaks the spell on the psychic girl, a mysterious young human named Jade, who has come looking for her brother, Targaryen. Remember him?
This unexpected revelation gets more complicated when the players head back out onto the open seas, searching for the ice land that the oracle hinted at. Halfway there, they are attacked by Ratzotto pirates, and they seem to have a new leader—Targaryen himself, revived from the dead or saved from its brink, commands the pirates from the bow of the ghostly Red Hand ship Karrina helped sink over a month ago. Holding the Jade Figurine Karina recovered from the watery temple aloft, he seems to use it to gain control over some monstrosity of the deep, a tentacled horror that tears apart the Butcher of Skago’s ship while the players fight off an attack of pirates.
The battle ends with Haymish gripping the rails of the Mankey Bastard, watching his master’s ship sink below the waves as the players make their escape from this frightening new Targaryen.

Lesson: Building Encounters in Fifth Edition
Despite its dual emphasis on story and gameplay, D&D has never truly left behind its roots as a one-shot tactical battle game. Which is great, when you play out a battle and then go home at the end of the day with a winner and a loser, back to do it next time y’all meet up. But when you mix character and story into that mix... well then things get a little complicated, don’t they? There are times you don’t WANT your party to die, because it would wreak havoc on your story. Yet, if every battle is a guaranteed win, then your game suffers, because there is no more risk.
I struggled with this for years as a GM, until one day I came to a very simple conclusion: it is okay to let your players die. In literally any situation, it is okay, because you can’t predict what those players are going to do. This is a roleplaying game, which means if your players are doing it right, they are following an internal narrative you won’t always have access to. That narrative may dictate they run head first into certain doom (”Barbarian smash!”), or that they do not take an opening to escape when they have the chance (”My creed is that I will never flee from justice!”), or they bring the proverbial knife to a gunfight (”Die fire elemental! Fear my fireball!”), or they provoke the Brass Dragon into eating them alive (”Damn, but you are hideously ugly!”). Your job isn’t to hand hold the players, improvising ways for them to survive against all odds. Leave that to the natural 20s they roll!
However, it is your job to roleplay the monsters as well as they play their characters. Do that, and you will find that instead of your story coming to a dead halt when you unexpectedly get a total party kill, it will feel like a part of the story. When your monsters act like monsters instead of figurines with the knowledge of the Dungeon Master, it won’t feel unfair if your players fall to them. This also lets you change the difficulty of encounters on the fly.
In the pirate battle in our session, for instance, Abenthy leapt immediately onto the pirate ship and taunted all of them. They chose for many rounds after this to focus their attacks on him, even after he retreated—which worked in the party’s favor because Abenthy is a tank who is hard to hit and can soak up damage even when he is. The players took further advantage of this and used clever positioning to keep Abenthy in front while Karrina gave rear support as an archer and Twyin came in from the side, doing devastating damage with his multiple attacks.
The pirates lost that battle, badly, but things could have gone differently. What if I had rolled well enough to take Abenthy down and suddenly the remaining players were faced with overwhelming odds? If I felt the battle was no longer fun, I could have used in world explanations to slightly make things easier—given courage by their success, perhaps the pirates split up and start rushing heedlessly into battle, spreading out where their sneak attack damage isn’t as useful.
In fact, I did use tactics to make things harder: once Twyin started taking down a pirate each turn, they started focusing their attacks on him, which did make things more tense. By doing this, I was able to break away from pure statistics and use changing tactics to keep our battle balanced throughout the fight.
To go along with this, here is some mechanical advice I have found in the last two years of tinkering with the D&D 5 system:
Go harder than you think: The Unearthed Arcana encounter builder does a much better job of giving appropriate challenges than does the complicated CR calculator that the DMG provides. That said, any kind of guideline someone publishes is based on average characters. It can’t take into account a player who rolled above average stats, or who selected powerful feats, or who took the best options their class has to offer, or is playing perfectly in synch with the rest of their party. It also can’t take into account items, magical weapons, and improved armor. Thus, I find that players tend to outperform these charts. It has often happened that combats I thought, on building them the day before a session, are far too deadly for the players to take on end up dealing no damage to them at game time. So, don’t be afraid to make combats hard! If the fight comes about and it is truly brutal, you can always use the above mentioned “change of tactics” mid fight to tone things down. Don’t underestimate the tendency of your villains to stop and give mighty speeches on their turns instead of attacking, when they realize they are wiping the floor with the players. After all, what villain can resist a good taunting of fate? In all seriousness, though, it is easier (and more acceptable to players) to describe how some of the goblin horde they are fighting back off because things got too hard (”a hush suddenly falls over the goblins as their champion comes forward, chuckling darkly that he will take down these fools himself”) then it is to scramble to roll up reinforcements when the players are making what you wanted to be an epic fight too easy. Oh, by the way... if they do make the epic fight too easy, don’t try to “fix it” and take that victory away. Just make a mental note that future fights will probably need to be tougher because you underestimated your players, and prepare the next session accordingly.
Action economy is king: I say it, designers say it, players say it, and it is worth saying again—in D&D it is the character who gets to strike the most who will win the most. Not all bonuses are built equal. High health points don’t matter much when a team of players can easily dish out 60 damage a turn. The damage your monsters can deal doesn’t matter much when the players can heal it all in a single cure wound spell. And the players will eventually get these powers, if they don’t have them already. But what never stops being powerful is when one of your monsters gets six attacks per turn. Do you want TPKs? Because that’s how you get TPKs. D&D 5 does a great job of making it harder for players to get seven attacks a turn (in Pathfinder, this tendency led to many monsters having ridiculous resistances and ACs just to stay alive) and instead gives such powers to the monsters. I’ve talked in the past about how doing this effectively brings back the “boss monster,” meaning that a single higher CR monsters can take the place of what in older versions would have been a horde of high CR monsters. I like this a lot, as I think it lets individual monsters have more personality. Some DMs dislike it, because it gets harder to build hordes with higher level monsters. And that is fair, because it does get much harder. And so, that is my advice—as you start to look at higher level monsters, just keep in mind that their multi-attack ability, if paired with high damage, can wipe a party in the first round of combat. As your monsters get more attacks, things are going to start scaling upwards in difficulty exponentially. So pay attention to these monsters when horde building. Similarly, remember that your players have access to extra attacks and will get exponentially tougher as they get them. If you have a party with a lot of fighters or other classes that grant extra attacks, you may need to adjust your difficulty higher.
Magic is a wild card: Somewhere on Reddit I read a great thread about all the ways a CR 5 enchanter could kill a party of higher level adventures without ever entering combat. Once you start getting into enemies with spells, you can really start messing with your game’s difficulty. On its basest level, magic in combat can buff your monsters, debuff the players, or deal damage. But think outside of the box, and the possibilities become far more interesting—and deadly! Picture the mage who follows after the players, taking on their appearance using disguise self, and visibly killing guards in every city they are to visit, so that when they arrive, they are immediately targeted by the King’s best men. What about the divination mage, who scries out the seas the players are sailing on, and uses her powers to summon a storm the likes of which hasn’t been seen on those seas in ages? There is the warlock who plants an item in the bag of holding the players carry with them, an item stolen from a powerful demon, a demon which will kill anyone who it thinks has the item... there is the illusionist who makes it look like the bridge across the chasm of doom didn’t collapse last week... there is the crazed evoker who has placed a rune of blasting on every door in his tower, and who has rigged the entrance to be one way only, emptying players out onto the elemental plane of fire when they try to leave...  Some of these possibilities go far beyond simply rolling a dodge in combat and using your massive reflex score to avoid damage. Magic is unpredictable. Because of this, there is really no good way to give a CR rating to a magician based purely on what magic they have. More important is to think about how they will use that magic in your game. A magic who is going to stand in one place casting fireball... well, you can easily factor in their added damage per round to their CR using the DMG and figure out their difficulty rating is. But far more deadly may be the mage that the players don’t even know is targeting them...

Lesson: When to Use Character Hooks
Short answer: whenever possible.
Anyone who has ever been a player in D&D knows that there are two characters you build when you make a new character. The first is one of stats and numbers, a list of abilities. The second is a story, a reason to journey, a purpose, a personality. The first is easy to bring into play—any time there is combat, or an obstacle requiring a roll, you get to use this character. When you level, you directly affect it, adding to stats and gaining new abilities. The second is harder. It doesn’t level up at specific milestones, or gain experience from killing monsters. There aren’t monsters that are weak to it, or campaigns pre-built to favor it. The first character will never go away. It will always be there on paper, easy to access and analyze until it falls beneath the axe of some crazed Drow. The second character, if not tended to, often is dead long before the axe falls, forgotten after a session or two of not being used.
This second character, the story of a character, is often what has separated memorable games from forgettable ones in my player experience. When I build a character, I am building a set of hooks and suggestions on the kind of story I want to play out. If I say I am a gunslinger searching for his father, then I am telling you (a) that the easiest way to get me to go anywhere in your game is to drop a hint about my dad, and (b) that I’m hoping this search will be a part of the game. Maybe not a huge part, but at least get enough of a focus that I will feel like I’m really playing a man on the hunt for family. Because obviously I have some interest in that, if this is the story I’ve come up with. Here’s an example...
I remember one game I played where I built a thief (Xaviee) whose village had been burned down by werewolves. One of the werewolves Xaviee remembered, because the beast had bitten his mother and turned her into a werewolf. It was a simple back story I just came up with for fun, in the hopes that if we ever ran into werewolves or any supernatural creature, I could roleplay treating them with extreme prejudice, maybe even attacking them on sight. I figured, too, that my mother might be used sometime as a hook—for instance, if the GM needed us to go to Phandalin, maybe a werewolf attack would be reported in the area. My player would easily agree to go, just on the off chance that the attack involved his now lupine mother.
With all this, I was pleasantly surprised to learn the GM had actually selected a werewolf campaign for us to play. Good fortune! Except in twelve sessions of the campaign, my mother was never mentioned. I mean, we FOUGHT werewolves. We came across tribes of them. At first, I just waited for the GM to throw some hint in, like “that werewolf over there, you recognize from the attack!” As time went on without any of this, I started asking for it: “Xaviee asks the tribe leader if he recognizes the name of his village or of his mother...” without hesitation the DM would say, “nope.”
We had fun at the table. It was a good game. But by the time it was over, I had stopped caring about Xaviee’s werewolf mother and, in doing so, stopped caring about him, too. When he eventually was killed by a quagmire troglodyte, I rolled up a dwarf who hated elves and liked getting drunk a lot. The DM seemed much more comfortable working this into the game.
This is why I like to work in as many of the hooks my players have given me as possible. I will add new scenes to bring their bonds into the campaign. I will replace blah NPCs with people from my players’ history. And I can’t think of a reason NOT to do this. It doesn’t take much time, and the sense of involvement it will bring your players is incredible. Otherwise, you really might as well just be playing a tactical battle game with their stats.
Stats are fun to play around with. They are what make your character feel powerful. But story is what makes your character feel alive.
And now, some news. This post will mark the end of the adventure blog... for a while. The game continues, but I am currently trying to design and publish the Ooze adventure for DriveThru RPG and I want to devote my attentions to that in the free time I have for writing. When I complete it, I may well return to the blog—either weekly again, or as a once in a while thing, if I think a session has some particularly good lessons in it for GMs. Until then, happy gaming!

OOC WEEK: DAY FOUR
When and how did you get into Harry Potter?: Honestly, HP was one of things where when the films started coming out I saw them, owned the DVDs etc. but I wasn’t hugely obsessed with it? Keep in mind I was 4 when the first film came out so my interests were very different, I was too busy watching Barbie movies and dealing with a new baby sister to be bothered by films in the same way I am now. I continued to get the films and watch them but it wasn’t until I was about 13/14 that the obsession got deep. I think that’s really the age tbh where I needed HP, I needed this idea of magic and this whole other world within our own where things seemed so much better and I needed to be a part of that, and ever since it’s been a growing love tbh. Though I’ll also admit I have a love/hate relationship with HP, for as many things it’s given me there are many things I question or find a little faulty?? If that’s the right word. Basically I feel like HP is my problematic fave of series :’)
Favourite HP movie? Why?: Without a doubt Goblet of Fire. I just love the whole thing, how much new information it gave us about the other schools, the more vivid inclusion of dragons and other magical creatures/beings. Also I love Cedric Diggory, I think he’s such an underrated character and frustratingly he’s only in that one film when he’s mentioned more in the earlier books. I also feel like poor Cedric gets hated on a lot because people think he’s a bit of a dick and forget that the books are basically in Harry’s POV and he’s jealous of Cedric so obviously the way he’s described and viewed is more negative then it needs to be. Basically Cedric deserved better and I love him in that film and the Twi-Wizard Tournament was a cool plot, I think.
Favourite HP book? Why?: I won’t lie, I feel like a sham... I haven’t read all the books, but hear me out on this, as I said earlier I didn’t get into HP until I was about 13/14 and then I started to read the books but then suddenly my GCSE exams were coming up and any reading I did ended up being reading for school and if I did read anything for leisure they were short stories or things that could help towards my GCSE exams. Then I went to college, took English Literature and as you can imagine that meant a lot more reading for school soooooo I never finished the series, I do intend to but I have like a long list of books I want to read/am reading/series I need to finish so who knows when it’ll happen. However, I will say I like the first book, I think the first book is a lovely introduction to the world of HP.
Favourite HP character? Why?: I love Neville. Adore him. Honestly, a part of me would’ve really liked Neville to have even more significance throughout the series, I feel like he played the part of a fool for so long and even though by the Deathly Hallows he’d matured and became a hero I still think he deserved more. I think there’s not a lot of appreciation for young Neville and everything he’s going through, there’s not enough recognition for the fact that he’s in a really difficult family situation and he deals with everything so well, he’s a kid who’s unpopular and not initially great at magic, living knowing his parents were tortured into a state of madness and I feel like not enough of that is appreciated? Plus tbh I think it would’ve been the best plot twist if he were actually the chosen one and Harry was just some diversion and Neville saved the day, I also would’ve liked it if Neville killed Bellatrix tbh or if he’d played more of a part in her demise because of her involvement in making his life extremely difficult.
Least favourite HP character, plot, or ship (or all three)?: My least favourite character is Peter Pettigrew because tbh I just feel like he was a twat and I feel like he was undeserving of being in Gryffindor, undeserving of the friendship he found in that house and undeserving of forgiveness. Plus it really urks me every time I hear Ron tell Harry there wasn’t a Death Eater who wasn’t Slytherin and I’m like “YOU’RE FUCKING RAT IS A GRYFFINDOR TRAITOR, RON!” because I’m very defensive of my house :’) My least favourite plot... erm... I don’t really like the whole sort of plot of Harry in pursuit of Cho Chang? I feel like maybe because she’s another character we hear barely anything of and then suddenly Harry is smitten with her and then not like a year after him and Cho are smooching (in front of Cedric’s picture and the pictures of all the relatives who are dead, which is super like weird in my opinion, like ‘oh poor Cedric, he was a good wizard, he really fancied you and now we should make out in front of his picture’ or maybe not, Harry?) but then he’s suddenly into Ginny and I feel like when his attention turns to Ginny our lovely Cho Chang gets sort of thrown to the side and she becomes unimportant again? Basically I feel like Cho Chang was used as a bit of a tool to make the Harry/Ginny thing more of a ‘surprise’ and she deserved better. My least favourite ship is... erm... I’m gonna be honest and go with Tonks and Remus. Don’t get me wrong I love Tonks, I love Remus and I love we get Teddy from them but I just never saw it? Maybe it’s again because in the films Tonks wasn’t really important for such a long time and then suddenly she shows up and oh by the way she loves Remus and suddenly she’s having a baby? And it’s like ‘woah ok what is happening?’. Plus I just think it’s really lame that JK was ‘going to have Remus be LGBT’ but then chose not to... but still made him a werewolf and used the metaphor which must not be named.
What’s your favourite HP-related memory?: You know one of my favourite HP memories is probably becoming part of the HP RPG community, I feel like I’ve learnt so much more about the series from interacting with other people but, more than that, I’ve heard so many new ideas and own headcanons that, to me, make the whole HP universe so much more interesting... Mainly ‘cause JK left a lot of gaps in information that I desperately need.
Why did you decide to start roleplaying HP-related stuff?: Honestly, I’ve only ever really been part of the HP RPG community and I got into it because a friend of mine was in a group and she told me about it but when I was scrolling the tag I found OL instead and the rest, as they say, is history.
Most interesting part of the HP world?: Erm... I think the creatures, tbh most of the reason I liked Fantastic Beasts was the creatures, I’d happily watch a film of just them in their little homes doing their thing.
Your wand: I’m gonna be honest, I have no idea hahahaha so basically when I first got Pottermore it was so great and fantastic and I loved all my info... then they re-did Pottermore and I couldn’t get my old information back because of an email issue so I made a new account and tbh was bitterly disappointed, the house quiz alone in my opinion is just shit now compared to how it used to be, I literally found out my house and then logged out and haven’t logged in since soooooo I’m not sure what my wand is any more :’)
Your patronus: Again, no idea :’)
Your boggart (if you’re okay sharing!): I’m not really sure what my boggart would be, I’m sort of scared of lots of things tbh, I’m a bit of a wimp so Merlin knows what could come out to greet me, could be just about anything and it’d be too much.
What classes would you be best at in Hogwarts?: Probably potions and arithmancy because I have a lot of patience, like to be precise with things and like working with numbers. Though also possibly divination because I’m learning the Tarots.
What classes would you be the worst at?: Probably History of Magic ‘cause at school I struggled with History XD I loved it, I was just not great at remembering dates and stuff like that.
Your favourite thing to do if you were at Hogwarts: The library. Guaranteed.
Favourite supernatural creature from the HP world?: I actually think dementors are like super cool and an awesome idea... though it’s gotta be a niffler, hasn’t it?
Death Eaters or the Order?: I like to think I’d be part of the poor Slytherin group who when shit went down got blamed for everything when they didn’t do anything like ‘send all of Slytherin back to the dungeons’ and I’m stood there like ‘all I’ve one is read all these years’. Tbh I like both groups though, like although the DEs are obviously insane nutters I think some of them are super interesting and a lot of them are products of their families and how they were treated by other people, like is it really a surprise Draco becomes a ‘DE’ when you think of who his family is and how everyone in Hogwarts hated on Slytherin anyway??
Marauders era or Next Gen?: Marauders.
Would you join the quidditch team or cheer from the sidelines?: Ngl I don’t really like sports so I’d probably be in the library, chilling with a book like “siighhh these athletic types”.
If the Triwizard Tournament were allowed, would you put your name in?: Not a fucking chance.
Dorm life: good or bad?: Erm... I dunno, I feel like tbh I’d be a pain to live with or find other people a pain to live with because I’m very organised and neat and space lacking that would drive me crazy.
From canon HP, who would be your favourite teacher?: Flitwick, without a doubt.
If you could make J.K Rowling write another series (and write it well), would you? And if so, what would you have it focus on?: I’d have it focus on minor characters and what they were doing while Harry was getting into shit, like I’m all for big plots and death but think how much just daily random stuff must happen in a magic school? Like give me a series on the rest of the Gryffindor dorm and what they were doing during the year. Give me a book series about Luna, Cho Chang, Oliver Wood etc.
