i'm trying to fix a very cheap pocket watch (i got it for the equivalent of 4 dollars as a teen) that was not made to last or be serviced. it is going: badly
#swedenquest#WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT#im so annoyed. i made the mistake of opening up the spring barrel#the spring didn't need replacing but i couldn't put it back in#so i got a new mainspring. but it doesn't DESERVE a new mainspring!!!!!!!!!!#i got this watch from some flyer that came with a science magazine my parents subscribed to#it was like 'JOIN POCKET WATCH CLUB.... GET THIS FANCY WATCH FOR ONLY 39 KRONER...'#and i was mesmerized. i had to have it. presumably i convinced my parents to get it for me#and it looks very cool but it's so cheaply made haha#i don't even think it's been lubricated#the face was glued to it. I'll have to glue it back on#anyway ive satisfied my curiosity at least

K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru starting this week's episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome again...Well well well...
J: Hanshin?
K: You know it aready! haha
J: I knew the moment you said 'Well well well'
T: You took a really deep breath.
K: Haha
J: Whenever you lament in that way, its probably Hanshin. Whats going on with them?
K: Well, its kinda like 'Hmm'
J: Haha
K: They are winning some and losing some.
T: Yeah.
K: I talked about this before, but after they got 20 points...
T: Ah! Yes
K: They started getting worse.
T: Yeh, yeh, its true.
J: Did they use everything they had all at once?
K: Well, I mean..But! They just can't win against the Giants.
T: Yeah.
J: Why is that?
T: They can win against other teams.
K: Yeh, its only the Giants. They get destroyed by them.
J: Haha
K: I can't say anything else.
J: Weren't they beaten three times in a row recently or something?
T: Yeah, moreover they didn't get a single point.
K: They were totally crushed three times in a row.
J: Ehh?
T: Its incredible.
J: There's nothing good to come out of this? Why did it happen?
K: They're trying too hard..whatever they do, they try too hard. They never get it right.
J: Oh, really?..Dare I ask you? Honestly? Is there any posibility for Hanshin to win again?
K: There is!
J: There is? Oh good!
K: Yeah, there is....but the Giants are pretty strong.
J: Kami, can't you do something for Hanshin?
Kami: That would be quite difficult. Three losses in a row is quite bad isn't it?
T: Yeah.
J: Its impossible for you to help? Can't you use some of your power?
Kami:......... No, I don't have any power.
J: Haha
Kami: The higher up gods do, but not the lower ones.
J: Can't you ask one of the higher up gods? You could be their mouthpiece.

K: Ok, Joe, today's topic please.
J: Yep...Its the news about the mystery of the northern European fashion brand that doesn't sell a single item of clothing. The website 'Carlings' catering to mainly northern Europe, has launched the fashion brand 'Neo-ex'. But it seems as if you can't actually buy clothes on the site. As for how it works, users can choose fashion they like from the 'Neo-Ex' collection, then they upload a photo of themselves. After that a team of exclusive 3D designers will created realistic images of you wearing the clothes. Then the user can buy the images. For example, they could use 'Neo-Ex' in order to look cool on social media. As for the price, you don't buy the clothes, only the image, but it costs between ¥1,300 and ¥3,900. It may appear as profiteering to some, but their aim is to cast the first stone in reducing the huge amount of waste that the fashion industry produces. What do you think about this Kaoru?
K: I mean...I don't really know.
J: You don't know? haha
K: I don't know, but at the same time Im kinda like, 'Ah, I see'.
T: Well, this method was first created at the beginning of 2019. Its still a bit strange, even now, but for sure, I think its good to use with social media.
J: Mmm, I see. Isetan did something similar to this after corona started. When it got really bad with corona, no-one could go to department stores, no one went to shops, so Isetan made avatars, like in a video, and in that the avatars could go shopping, and try on clothes. They charged a fee for it. I read an interview about it, and what I found interesting was that rather than aiming this at stressed out people who love clothes, but can't go shopping, by letting people make avatars, they were trying to open up an entirely different market. Well, thats what people are saying. This project might be a bit different from that though...Well, its not about buying clothes in reality...well, their aim may be to bring attention to the waste the fashion industry produces, but it also kinda changes the way we see fashion. It doesn't matter how much you pick with this, right? You don't buy them.
T: Yeah.
K: Well, yeh.
T: If you never leave your house, and start living though an avatar, its like your life is over. I have a feeling we'll start hearing stories like that.
K: But there are loads of peope on social media who model clothes that they've bought, aren't there?
J: Yeah..So as for who this fits, its one way to express yourself on social media, right?
K: In that sense, its ok isn't it? And its cheaper than buying the actual clothes. Ah, but does the design team choose for you? Ah, you choose yourself?
J: Yeah, then they create an image of you wearing the clothes. You don't actually buy the clothes, so there is no kind of waste produced, but if you want to just show everyone how the clothes look, you can pay from ¥1,300 to about ¥4000.
T: Its expensive!
K: This would be interesting if various brands were included.
T: Well, yeh.
J: Yeh.
K: And people like us (Dir en grey) could join it, and people could wear our clothes. It might be interesting.
J: Like not actually wearing, but just creating an image?
T: Fans could try on the same outfit as Kaoru and stuff..
K: Yeah. Or you could dress up as historical figures, do cosplay. Or you could choose stuff that you've seen models or tv stars wearing. I think this is a brand at the moment, but if they made that kind of website..
J:Ah, it could be interesting, right?
K: Yeh.
J: I mean, its also good that it doesn't create any waste products.
K: There's a lot isn't there?
J: Well, yeh, if clothes don't sell...in the end, if they are part of a collection, they don't sell them off cheaply, they just cut them up and throw them away.
T: Ah, really?
J: Yeh, and there is a lot of stuff made out of cotton, so thats kinda also related to environmental damage. The economy only works if you keep making stuff and selling stuff, but if you don't sell, it becomes waste, and the earth's environment has to take on that burden. But with this website, its purely the design aspect, so there is no burden on the earth.
K: I wonder if they can do this on any type of photo..
J: What do you mean?
K: Like do you have to be standing straight, facing the camera like this, or could you be sitting down, or..?
J: Ah, your pose?
K: Yeh yeh. Its not that cool to post a photo of yourself just standing up straight. This might actually be quite difficult.
J: Yeah.
K: Was Kami going to say something just then?
Kami: Um, I can't choose clothes at all.
K: You just wear half dried out Tshirts? haha.
J: Haha, yeah. There were quite a lot of people who wanted those.
K: Really? Hahaha
J: It's weird! People saying, 'I want one of Kami's half dried out t-shirts'.
Kami: I only buy cheap clothes. Cheap clothes which won't show the dirt. But even so, my shoes are expensive.
J: Ah, shoes, yeah.
T: What type of shoes do you buy, Kami?
Kami: I buy quite nice shoes. Yes, I do. I mean, I don't really know, though, something around ¥6000.
J: Im not sure if thats cheap or expensive, haha.
K: Yeh, its kinda hard to tell.
J: Yeh, its that ambiguous zone. If it was ¥500 you could say, 'wow, thats cheap!'. But ¥6000 is like, well...'oh, ok..', kinda.
Kami: I pay ¥500 for tshirts.
T: Thats cheap.
J: Kami, do you wanna try this? Making a fashion image like this?
Kami: No way.
J: So icy...haha.
K: Don't you post photos on socia media, Kami?
T: Oh right, yeh.
Kami: Not at all. But I think doing this type of thing is a really good thing. It's like casting the first stone, it said. I like stuff like that.
J: Ahh.
Kami: I think its a good thing, but I wouldn't do it myself.
J: I kinda wanna try checking out this website. To see what its actually like.
K: Yeah, if it looks interesting...
J: Kaoru, you should try it!
K: Me?

10/11 150.2bit live report
So yesterday's event was the Loft Culture and Music festival (or something). For 4500 yen, you got a drink + access to all of the artists/events, so it was a good deal. I only wanted to see Momoka, so it was a bit pricey, but w/e.
She started off with a 20 min live (was more like 15). It was soooooo fun! First, 150.2bit is no longer a girls band. There was disagreement in what type of music to play and other performances were cancelled, and this one was at risk of being cancelled too, but her management managed to scrape a team together, including one of her friends (Seiji). They had a brief sound check before starting.
The first two songs was basically Momoka touching herself all over. Occasionally she'd throw herself on the floor. As you do, I guess? She made a show of her shirt/dress being too short so it barely covered her very tiny bike shorts. It was very typical Momo style lol They weren't really songs that I'd normally listen to, and I couldn't always pick out the words (mix of bad mic/bad placement of mic and too loud music and also the style - metalkawaii lol). But live music is always better than a cd for me, especially when the artist is enjoying themselves. A lot of the fans weren't really getting into it? I kinda felt they were fans from her NMB days, and they seemed a little out of place. There was a dude in a business suit going hard in the front row so shout out to him. Then there was a brief MC.
There were a few other songs, and I really enjoyed most of them. For one song, that I'll call 'Ai ni' or the spitting leaves song, Momoka put on a panda hat and started to eat leaves? As you do I guess? Occasionally she'd spit them out, sometimes on stage, sometimes on people. It be that way, I guess? At the end of the song, she gave someone in the front row two wooden boards so she could pretend to kick them in half lmao It was really cheesy ;;
Throughout the show you could really see she was enjoying herself. She seemed to get along well with her bandmates, especially Sakana-chan and Seiji. It was honestly worth the time and money! After the show, we all basically dashed to the talk session venue to try and get a seat but it looks like a bunch of people were there for the MCs? So just stayed there after the previous session. (Once this was over, it was a dash back to the first venue)
The talk session was also great. The announcers called Momo out and the door opened and nothing..? Next minute, Momo's falling down the stairs with chuhai in her hand lmaoooooo It was live streamed so it's probably out there somewhere, but she spoke about how she likes alcohol even though she isn't much of a drinker. She spoke about her family and sister a bit. A lot of the time she started with "it's kinda bad to say, but" lol She hasn't changed her character, and you can see she's being her genuine self and enjoying every minute of it. She's an absolute joy to watch. She convinced the MCs to come and buy her cd as well, so that was cool. They weren't really sure of what to make of her to begin with, but they warmed up to her really quick - "your eyes are really sparkling!". She's got a really nice, every day person vibe. I think if she plays her cards right she'll really be able to do well for herself.
The band members came out after a while too, except the drummer (and they were drinking as well lol). Sakana-chan is very cute and seems to have her own group of fans. It was basically Momo and Seiji speaking because the other too are 'ng at speaking' according to Momo. They get along really well and Momo was really honest in talking about how the girl's band idea didn't play out but they were able to get together today regardless. Her and Seiji have been friends for a while actually, and she's really happy she got to perform with him. This group has a really good energy, so I hope they can stay together (I don't care for a girl's band one way or the other - good music is good music). They're a fun, chaotic bunch lol
At one point, Momoka asked the audience if they knew who she was lmao One of the MCs is like 'why do you think they came here? of course they're here to see you lmao' .... '.....ah' .... '....you seriously know me..?' lmaoooooo she's so funny! She was being a bit vulgar (as is her way), but she was a joy to watch and she had a good time and it was really contagious. She was really happy to have fans and she wants to do well by us.
The last event was not actually a live like I thought, it was actually a sales event of her CD! (The way to get to the sales area was poorly organised, but that was the venue's/organiser's fault, not her's.) Everyone but Seiji and the drummer were there. It was limited to one per person (some girls whined about this, but Momo instantly scolded them (in a kind way), saying there were more people in line who deserved a chance to buy them).
The cd was 600 or 700 yen (I don't really remember, or care, and I would have paid more if she asked lol). After you got the cd you had to walk past Momo to leave. I kinda thanked her as I was leaving, and she's like 'oh! thanks! I could see you the whole time! Come again, kay?' and honestly? Those words are gonna get me through the week lol She wasn't speaking to everyone because she was busy drinking and talking to her band members, and she wasn't saying generic phrases. Everything was individual.
About the cd first, it was recorded/printed on 11/10 so it's super recent lmao The CD is actually called 11/10 Demo lol The CD itself is white with black text and there is only front cover art, nothing on the back. It's a very cheaply made cd, but that's kinda charming in it's own way. The cover art is actually purikura, just blown up. You can actually see the text and stuff in the image still lol
The CD itself has three tracks (I don't trust the names iTunes has brought up for them ;; ). The first is a talk session (3min~) with Momo and Seiji. I'll translate it later, maybe on the weekend (or try to - they're a little difficult to understand at points and spend half the time cackling haha). The second track is about 2mins, but I don't think it's the full version. It wasn't my favourite that they performed. The third track is the spitting leaves song. It was written by Moose Man (I can't remember his name but he was wearing a wig with moose antlers and a cap, so Moose Man). It's really catchy. I like it a lot.
Before anyone asks, I will not be sharing the cd, or putting it online - there were very limited copies available, and I was the only foreigner. I don't want to be banned from events, and when artists are still upcoming, they need to be supported. I hope we're able to get more songs soon. She had a really good range of songs and I'd love to see her grow more!

Alibi: The Saturday that Brian went missing, Brooke had been working the entire day at Piggly Wiggly. As usual, there was an assortment of customers who came and left. Children buying sweets, mothers doing a grocery run, guys buying some beers, girls buying new glossy magazines. It was business as usual. Around 5 the shop closes and so Brooke leaves the old decrepit place that always seems to be on the verge of financial problems for the next day. Her evenings were always spent out doing whatever she felt like. Sometimes it was to watch a film, sometimes to get high and other times just drive around until it was pitch black outside. Brooke explained that she’d been out for dinner, eating a meal in peace and quiet and drove around till she arrived at Videoport, flicking through DVD’s she wants to watch. Around midnight, she arrived in her old Chevy Impala, turned matte black due to the dust and dirt over the years, back home where she found her mother passed out on the sofa with the tv on. She moved her mother upstairs and cleared away the wine glass and wine bottle, the only two witnesses to this affair ever happening. After that, she went to bed.

WRITING SAMPLE
Biting a fingernail on her left hand, Brooke Youngblood surveyed the scene in front of her. Her almond-shaped eyes glazed over to the one side of the table where John was sat. Well, actually her father but she saw him so rarely that she normally just referred to him by his first name, something neither of her parents seemed to like much. His dark hair was still quite full for his age and his smile was as dazzling as ever. It wasn’t hard to see why her mother had fallen for him. Now he wore a crisp business suit with a white shirt and striped tie. He fit right into the image that had been created by both of them when they had gotten married at 21. So young to be making choices that would affect you for the rest of your life. You can never know if it’s going to be influenced in a good way or a bad way. Only time can tell and it can sometimes be a bitch of a master.
Brooke swung her gaze to the other side of the table where her mother was sat. Rozene was an image that one doesn’t forget and deliberately so, her mother had worked at it. Her dark hair fell effortless down in waves as she wore a linen dress, casual yet chic. Her mother’s make-up was flawlessly applied, no signs yet of the mascara that could possibly end up running down her cheeks or any lipstick smudge on her chin from reapplying lipstick in a giddy fashion. Their whole house seemed like something that one pulled straight of a poster for the American dream. Well, it was more like the all-American nightmare for her. She let out a sigh as she passed around the casserole that her mother had spent the entire day making to her dad. It tasted good but there was nothing, nothing, that could decrease the tension in their household. Taking a sip from her glass of water, she could tell that it would only be a matter of minutes before her parents would start talking to each other. Now they were sat in deathly silence, only the sound of cutlery on plates and eating could be heard.
Eating the last mouth full of her plate, she set down her knife and fork and her napkin just as she’d been taught all those years ago. She thought back to when she’d been taught proper etiquette. For months she had to ask her parents “please may I leave the table?” whenever she even wanted to go for a piss. From all the fine things her mother tried to teach her, that was the only thing that had stuck. She quietly uttered the sentence as she stood up and picked up her plate, setting it in the sink. As soon as she was out of sight, their voices started to push through the walls. Her father’s deep, baritone muttering something to her mother as she heard her mother throw down her fork and heatedly reply back. “For fuck’s sake Rose, you know this isn’t normal. This town has always had its demons…. Now, this….”
Her mother replied back, but the words were cut out as she turned on the tap and rinsed her plate clean.
“Also, what the fuck kind of food do you call this?”
“I spent HOURS cooking that, you piece of shit. I don’t see you offering yourself up to cook a meal for us.” Their voices were rising over the noise of the tap, that’s when Brooke knew she had to get out. The plate clattered in the sink as she pushed her arms into her coat, grabbed her keys and left.
Her trusty Chevy Impala had brought her to one of the few places she could think of that was clear of any people. Piggly Wiggly. It was stupid to come to work after hours but right now there was no chance of anyone being there and that’s all Brooke needed right now. Sitting on the hood of the car, she slipped her hand into her pocket and pulled out her pack of Marlboro and a lighter. As she inhaled the soft grey smoke of the cigarette curled up and into the night air, the embers of the tip burning a fiery orange. Her eyes cast upwards as she exhaled the smoke. If it only was as easy to disappear from this town as the smoke disappeared in the night. The cold nipped at her cheeks which she stubbornly refused to acknowledge as she lifted to the hood of her coat onto her head, keeping herself as warm as she could. The size of the cigarette seemed to be dwindling fast as Brooke started to feel this dark feeling boil inside of her. Anger started to build as she thought about her parents. Why couldn’t they just have one normal meal? Just one. Is that too much to fucking ask for?
Dropping the cigarette to the floor, she stomped on it with a force that wasn’t necessary to put out something so small. No, it was measured against the fire that was burning through her veins.
Brooke’s hands started to itch, a desire to hit something rising, like a coiling serpent ready to strike, trying to find a way to let out all her anger. She popped the boot of her car and pulled out a green canvas bag, slamming it closed again. Her footsteps were full of purpose as she strode up to the sidewall of her workplace. Her hand reached in and grabbed a can as she let the bag go. The can felt cold, the sharp biting making everything seem more real, as she lifted it above and pressed hard. The colour was neon green and spread like a wildfire as she started to draw.
A smile slipped onto her lips as her anger faded and instead the feeling of thrill ran through her body. It lasted about a minute. She saw before she heard. Her eyes caught the sight of red and blue light as she swore loudly. Bright lights shone in her face as she tried to shield her eyes, automatically watering due to the brightness.
“Oi! Hey you!” Brooke dropped the can into the bag and slung it over her shoulder as she tried to get away.
“Hey! You! Stop right now! An officer of the law is speaking to you!”
She turned and ran right into a body. “Well, if it isn’t Brooke Youngblood. You’re coming with us. Vandalising property.”
An officer picked her up by her armpit as she tried to wiggle free. The other officer came up behind her, huffing and puffing despite the short distance. He observed her bag and the scowl that she wore. “Don’t you think we aren’t busy enough as it is? All us looking for that Goode kid?”
The officer shook his head as he signalled her to come along to the patrol car, a hard push sending her that way. Brooke decided not to say anything as she sat down in the back of the car, the leather seats feeling slight warm despite the cool October air. Yeah, that’s right. Finally, this town is being woken up. All of these idiots get to see what’s actually going on behind all these smiles and closed doors.
A smile slid onto her face as they drove off, only one thought on Brooke’s mind. Wakey wakey, motherfuckers. You’re all in for one hell of a ride…
ANYTHING ELSE?
→ The Youngblood household is less a home and more like IKEA showroom, all gloss that when disassembled is just cheaply made wood. The matriarch, Rozene Youngblood, is the epitome of the notion of a two-faced coined. On the one hand, she is a classy lady, married to the esteemed businessman John Youngblood, who she met at Devil’s Knot very own highschool as a senior, who performs the duties of a housewife to a perfection. On the other side, the real side, she’s a bored, lonely, repressed alcoholic. She hides her misery behind glasses of Rosé and plastic smiles as she laments the singing career she abandoned for traditional atomic family life. Her parents play the roles but never truly mean it, and while the rest of the town is fooled, their only child is not. Brooke has spent her life clearing up empty bottles and sick, while her father graces them with his presence every few weeks if only to criticise and make barb comments at the dinner table. Is it any surprise Brooke strives to break every social conformity she meets? She has first-class proof that bliss is not picket fences and neighbourhood barbecues.
→ After years of not only seeing her mom consuming more alcohol than Brooke ever thought was possible and the unhappy effect it’s had on their family as a whole, Brooke doesn’t drink. Even though she’s not of the legal age to do it yet, she’s already decided that way in advance. There have been moments she’s had it offered to her which she declined. On the whole, the number of parties she gets invited to is also on the low side so peer pressure and her exposure to it, besides being at home, is limited. She’s more open to drugs and has been known to smoke on certain occasions. Handing some of her cash in and sneaking a packet of cigarettes out, going on quick breaks just to have a quick smoke is rare but it happens as she tries to relieve herself from the not stop grind of her work ethic. Besides that, she’s open to experimenting and having a fun time. Anything to get out of this dreary, awful town, right? Even if it’s just mentally.
→ If Piggly Wiggly is an American staple, then Brooke Youngblood’s dark eye shadow and blunt cut bangs are a Devil’s Knot staple. As a young girl, she used to run around in colourful dresses and bows in her hair. It all slowly started to fade away but when she started high school, that’s when it really peaked. On their first day of high school, Brooke stepped out of her mother’s pristine car and all eyes met her. Her dark, long locks were always braided or beautifully taken back now were let loose and hung like a curtain down her back. A blunt fringe had been cut, somehow framing her face better and making her face seen at least five years older. Her eyes were rimmed with deep purple eye shadow, highlighting all her best facial features. She wore a simple purple dress with black Dr Martens. Since then that’s become her style and it’s what she’s faultlessly known for. Some say she’s the only fashionable thing about Devil’s knot and others say she seems like a demon sent from hell. Whatever it is, Brooke Youngblood is in never going to change it, despite her parent’s wishes to the contrary.

As they drove back, Brooke spotted an auto shop where they fixed old cars. As she walked in, it took her all of one second to spot the car and ever since that moment it’s been hers.

It seems to be filled with pretentious people who are so worried about fitting a certain societal mould that they can’t think straight. All this white-picket-fence crap is enough to make her sick. It’s definitely not the kind of life she ever wants to live. One of the first things she wants to do is travel. Leave Devil’s Knot for good behind. She’s always sensed the darkness in this place and now with Brian missing, it’s only affirmed it once again. Even if no one else will follow her, Brooke knows she won’t be staying here forever. If she can help it not even another year. This very purpose is what drives her to work so hard, either she’ll leave by savings or good grades, whichever ends up being first.

Lightning in a Bottle, where do I even begin? Once again I’ve been enchanted by my favorite festival. Once again I've left thinking that this time it was even better than the last. Once again I've left inspired, recharged and more comfortable with who I am.
It's always hard to put into words exactly what this festival is about and what it means to me. When I come back after the weekend everyone likes to ask, and I find it hard to use just a few words to explain the feelings it gives me and the world it creates. So this piece might be a little rambly and long, but I want to paint a picture for you of the full experience.
LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE - THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM
On Friday, we arrived Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) bright and early. This was the first time we'd decided to do car camping. We were there by 10 am and I found the car camping area to be pretty packed already. It seemed that Thursday was the busy night for the LIB team, with the bulk of campers arriving then. Luckily we had a friend who came in Thursday night and saved a nice space next to his tent for us.
Let me tell you, car camping is a total game changer. I will never not car camp again at LIB. Moving our stuff from the car to camping was 100x easier. It also really helped that it was overcast Friday morning when we arrived. By the time we set up our tent, the sun was clearing out the clouds and warming up the day.
We got a new tent this year too. It was a Coleman 10 Person Instant Tent. We got it at Costco for about $200 and I have zero regrets. Previously we used a six person tent -- which holds six people if you're laying side-by-side next each other in sleeping bags with literally nothing else in your tent. With the 10 person tent, and four of us in it, we were able to fit two queen air mattresses, stand up to get dressed and have a lot of room for all of our other stuff inside the tent this year. We didn't even need to set up a canopy to keep us shaded because it came with a really great one that attached to it.
Setting up the tent and seeing the lake was totally amazing. For those of you who don't know, this was the first year that LIB has been at the San Antonio Recreation area with a lake. It's incredible to see that we had so much rain this year in CA.
After setting up our camping area, we grabbed some beers and went for a walk to check out the lake. It didn't take us long to realize how the lake was affecting the San Antonio recreation area. Over the course of the weekend we saw two snakes, some half-dollar-sized spiders, and lots of little flies/mosquitoes. Surprisingly, none of these bugs bit us and I don't have any marks which was a really nice surprise. The snakes were also harmless, mostly just scary. This was solved though by a guy next to our campsite who we ended up dubbing "Jake the Snake". This crazy guy collected the snakes for us and moved them away from our campsites. (Thank you, Jake the Snake).
It also turned out that the festival had to be reorganized a little bit, because of something else the lake brought with it. Where the Woogie stage used to be, a bald eagle had made a nest and laid some eggs in the tree. Talk about amazing. Some people even got to see it. We tried to look for it once but we couldn't find her or the nest.
We had one friend arrive at our campsite after us because she had to take a separate car. To offset the carbon emissions, LIB charges single car drivers $30 to park at the festival. Once she arrived, we changed into our first looks and headed into the festival for the first time.
Friday we themed "holographic space lamb". My group and I really like coordinating themed outfits. I wore my Glamorous UK blush pink mesh maxi dress, holographic J Valentine bottoms, lightning bolt pasties, and some new platform pink boots I had purchased from Hot Topic. It didn't take me long to need to put some insoles into those shoes. They were cheaply made but became much more comfortable once I had the shoe pads in. They were a ton of fun to frolic in around the festival. I always recommend bringing a pair of insoles to any festival. They can be a totally game changer.
The weather Friday was perfect with the morning haze, then even still once it cleared up. During the day it never got too hot and then at night I layered my look with some leggings and this really cool faux fur jacket I got off Poshmark for $20.
Once changed we headed into the festival to explore. The Thunder and Lightning stages were the same beautiful set up they've always been. A new Pagoda Bar, Woogie stage and other some other new structures were set up with beautiful bright colors reflecting on the lake.
Because of the way the festival was reorganized, it did feel a little squished in some areas. I felt like there was a stage near the Gong Sanctuary and The Cauldron tents that was a little too close. The music overpowered speakers there and the meditation space. I also felt like there were a lot more vendors than previously, which was fine, but it just took a little learning curve to learn the new festival grounds.
We checked out a class in the Learning Kitchen, "Digestive Psychology" on Friday. It was about how we often just try to treat an problem vs finding the underlying issue. For example: perhaps we have back pain and we're dealing with a lot of stress; we should learn to deal with the stress primarily vs medicating the back pain, because the stress could be causing the pain.
Friday night was a lot of fun bouncing around to check out how art pieces transformed into glowing night structures, dancing to music at multiple stages, and eventually closing the night with Rufus Du Sol. We're not really the group of people who stay up past 2am haha, we were beat and called it a night after 2am. There's of course music all through the night for those who want to stay up.
Saturday I wore matching tie-dye overalls with my boyfriend, which we dyed together the weekend before. This look was totally his idea and they turned out amazing. Everyone loved them, I swear I got more compliments on my outfit that day vs any other day. We purchased the white overalls from Forever 21 and got a tie-dye kit from Michael's with a coupon. I actually ended up having to dye the overalls twice because the first time we didn't properly fill in all the white space. That worked out fine and they turned really great. I loved having all the pockets and it wasn't too warm to wear during the day because we didn't wear any shirts underneath. and at night, I just added my coat again and I was perfectly content.
Saturday we ventured out and checked a few different classes. First was "Sex, Love & Awakening: 4 Keys to Ecstatic Partnership" at Haven. Let's be real, we wanted to check out at least one class that had sex in the title. I really ended up liking this class and the speaker. She was super well spoken and had a lot of interesting points. She talked about the fours stages of a relationship that she's studied as a psychologist, and my friends and I had some great discussions after about our own relationships.
Then we went to "Tarot Readings with the Tarot Woman" at Craft-Folk Arts. Each reading was $20. After, we went and checked out a favorite from last year, Benjamin Pixie and salmon skin tanning. This year the class was hands on and we saw a little of the process he uses. Mr. Pixie has some great stories and a love for sharing them that makes his smile quite infectious.
We checked out another Learning Kitchen class Saturday called "Flavor Tripping: A Trip Down Sensory Lane" which was really cool as well. This one was presented by New Belgium Brewery, and they had some beer samples for us while they talked about the process and different tastes of each. They also told us about this thing called a Miracle Berry and let us experiment with it. It's a plant native to West Africa that contains glycoprotein, something that causes sour foods to taste sweet temporarily. We all got to have one of these little pill versions of the fruit, then they passed out lemons and limes to taste. It was totally crazy because you really did have a tastebud change!
Saturday we also checked out the 2nd Annual Soapbox Derby which was so awesome, and spent most of Saturday night at the Grand Artique which is set up like an old Western town, and played some arcade games. I won a rabbits foot on my first try.
While it may sound like we had very organized days, it was was really made up of a lot of hopping around. We'd taken a look at the schedule before and picked a few things that sounded interesting, but for the most part we would check out a class here, listen to some music there, grab a snack or sit by the lake. There's really no set schedule you have to abide to at LIB and that's one of the things that makes it so much fun. We weren't living by the clock and rushing to keep to a schedule. Most people also have no service at the festival, and you either decide it's too frustrating to try to keep to posting things, or you just don't care anymore and you put your phone away to just experience everything.
Sunday was the hottest day. We woke up feeling hot for the first time, and decided it was time for us to venture down to the lake for a swim. The water was so refreshing and felt so nice. The shore was rocky but once in the water you could swim or float without touching it. Everyone was in the water Sunday AM it felt like. Pockets all over the grounds were filled with colorful floats. One of my favorite things about LIB is how we all accept the fact that just because we're adults doesn't mean we can't enjoy life and have fun. We still like to play in the water, climb on playgrounds and be silly. I love that we're given this freedom there. I love that no one judges anyone there. The festival had artists build a few climbing structures on land, then a few floating art pieces as well for us to all play on to further facilitate our play.
I think what always keeps me coming back to LIB is this overarching theme of freedom. I get to wear all my "crazy" outfits with lots of colors, dye my hair pink and do my makeup with tons of glitter. I get to play dress up and people don't stare at me like I'm a weirdo, but appreciate the creativity in it. I get to walk around with a backpack filled with cold beers and drink responsibly instead of trying to drink a ton before getting into an event so I don't have to pay ridiculous amounts to drink once inside. I never feel harassed by security or pestered by rules. It's an adult playground; we're given the freedom to explore, take charge of our own bodies, take charge of our own time, and express ourselves in our own creative ways. It's one of the most freeing experiences of my life each time I go.
Sunday we went back to Craft-Folk Arts to listen to "Storytelling - Animal Awareness with Rainbow Dreamer". It felt like story time in school again- Rainbow Dreamer was a flawless storyteller, with a mesmerizing cadence. From there we went to one of the last Sound Healing sessions at the Gong Sanctuary. Here you lay down with your eyes closed and they play all these sounds around you like rain sticks and gongs for about 20 minutes as a mediation session.
We then hiked up to Mediation Point to take in the view, and ended the day like every other day, watching the sunset from a cliff with other festival-goers. This is always such a magical close to the day, and it was even more beautiful this year with the lake reflecting the light. After howling and clapping at the sunset, we changed for our last night at the festival. Sunday night was the coldest and the most windy, but we had a great time again closing with Bassnectar.
Sunday I wore a hot pink metallic one piece swimsuit I had been pining over since I first saw it online. I waited for a good sale and purchased it, the brand is Motel. I wore it with some fun alien hoop earrings my boyfriend got me for Christmas, and at night with some glitter tights. During the day I had a faux fur purple vest with it from Poshmark, then at night again my faux fur jacket to stay warm.
There's so many things to explore at LIB, but my friends and I felt like we didn't miss a thing this year. We experienced it all as it was meant to be, by fulling allowing ourselves to journey through the festival. We went to some great classes and lectures and then took those further into wonderful discussions together as the sun set each night. We grew together over this weekend, and I know we won't forget the memories we made anytime soon. I love this feeling I leave LIB with, and I hope it stays with me for a long time until it's time to be refreshed again next year.
