Being a leftist does not mean you are immune to the things you criticize rightists for. All too often, I see fellow lefties who act as though being a leftist by itself is enough to make them "better than" political opponents. In truth, it makes you unapproachable if somebody is a minority.

#politics #making this post after seeing some hella infuriating ableism in lefty spaces #as a disabled/trans/queer person i don't feel welcome in many left spaces because people refuse to change #and hearing from BIPoC this has been a common criticism wrt race. it's something i've been hearing since i first joined lefty spaces #i know i don't post politically in this way but it's really important to me regardless #(tbh i strayed away from politics in order to read and watch more content from more diverse lefty sources.)#(the good news is that i learned enough that i can now cringe at some of the old political posts i have made)#(i really hope the people who inspired this post change enough to one day cringe at themselves.)#(i am of the opinion that it is neutral to cringe at yourself - cringing at your behaviour can be okay even)#(cringing at yourself is bad when it inhibits you from living your life normally though)
