What are your thoughts on NejiLee? Got any headcanons for them?

I think nejilee is ADORABLE and I do indeed have some headcanons about them! I’m bad at organizing my thoughts so bear with me here! (For nejilee headcanons that are orderly and good, I recommend @fuggles)

As far as rivalries go, Neji and Lee definitely have one of the most benign, right behind Kakashi and Gai. At no point do they seem to hate each other, they just get frustrated with how the other is

In fact, the main sticking out in Lee’s and Neji’s rivalry is that they think the other would be better off if they could see things from their perspective --Lee wants to pull Neji out of his shell and teach him to hope and fight against the hand that fate deals you, because he thinks Neji will be happier that way. But Neji legitimately wants Lee to see things his way instead and understand that sometimes he’ll get a bad hand and lose and there’s nothing he can do about it. Neji is heartbroken when he sees Gaara defeat Lee and how bad his injuries are from it because he partially thinks that Lee could avoid such things if he would accept that Neji’s right. They genuinely want to help the other get to a better place, in their own ways.

In fact, Neji and Lee are fond of each other and see the other as being fairly skilled (Lee thinks Neji is the best of their entire generation and recommends him for the Sasuke retrieval mission, and Neji seems very sure that no one at the chunin exams should have been any trouble for Lee, and in fact he and Tenten acknowledge that Lee could have singlehandedly defeated the sound ninja if he hadn’t been handicapped by having to protect team 7)

Neji is ready to murder those ninja when he sees how badly they hurt Lee so they definitely have each other’s back when they need it

After the chunin exams, Neji actually wants to start seeing things through Lee’s eyes and he wants to face him more seriously as a rival and friend, so Neji was definitely there for Lee throughout his recovery, but honestly, Neji’s still not the hopeful type, so he wasn’t holding his breath when he heard what the odds for Lee’s surgery were

When Lee came limping back, not only having survived the surgery but having broken out and fought Kimimaro and barely survived, Neji wants to be mad at him but really all he can do is smile while he gives him a lecture

Neji is always on front lines to stop Lee whenever he accidentally has a sip of alcohol

Neji (and Tenten) play the straight man to Lee’s (and Gai’s) antics mostly because they have fun doing it. They genuinely enjoy being together though, and in fact, Neji sincerely admires Lee and appreciates having someone around to provides an air of levity and makes him smile.

Here are headcanons less attached to canon scenes

Team Gai crashes at Gai’s apartment quite a lot, for very different reasons. In the week(s) before the chunin exams, from the moment Neji heard that Kurenai’s team was going to participate, Neji stayed at Gai’s appartment and all but refused to go to the Hyuuga complex because he would rather not be lecture or threatened not to hurt Hinata. He actually talks to Gai about it (hence his “passionate promise” to Gai not to bring the clan stuff in if he and Hinata actually did end up in a fight). Coincidentally, Lee also stayed at Gai’s apartment regularly during that period, for extra training. Lee and Neji talked a lot then, lots of heart-to-hearts and lofty promises made.

When Neji first shows Lee his seal, he does it to make a point --that fate is written in stone. Lee’s inability to do anything but taijutsu, Neji’s inability to go against the main branch. In response, Lee made a self rule --he would help Neji break free of what the seal represented, or he would keep training until he was strong enough to.

Neji teaches Lee how to meditate, and Lee actually enjoys it quite a bit

Both Lee and Neji have very distinctive vocal patterns --for Lee, it’s because [insert Konoha’s language] isn’t his mother tongue, while for Neji, it’s because he grew up in a Noble clan. They both get funny looks for it at times.

While Lee was out of commission, Neji sometimes carried him around bridal style, because it was more efficient than waiting for Lee to limp around after him.

They enjoy their spars together quite a bit
