I still remember the third of December, me in your sweater
It was a cold day - a third of December to be exact. It was late in the afternoon and quidditch practice had just ended. You were drenched in sweat, your bright red Gryffindor quidditch jersey barely shielding you from the cold now that your body was cooling down from the exercise.
You fished in your bag but loudly cursed when you realized you had forgotten your sweater and your jacket back in the common room. Fred had asked you for a service right before practice, making you almost late and completely forgetting half of your things on the common room chair.
A shiver slipped passed your lips and you wondered how you were going to get back to the castle without dying of cold. You watched as Harry Potter got out of the changing room - all wrapped up in warm layers of clothes, you somehow wished you were in his position.
Until your savior came. His voice broke your thoughts like it always did. The way he pronounced your name made you want to melt like snow exposed to the sun. Lifting your head - you met his grey eyes and like always, it sent shivers down your spine. He was walking straight for the changing rooms and had spotted you there - shuffling through your bag in panic.
"Let me guess, you forgot your sweater?" It was always that friendly banter that made you weak to your knees. He would always have a friendly smirk to give you, always something fun to say.
"I think so." You made a weird face as your eyes went back to the snowy quidditch fields.
"Here." He didn't think twice before handing you his. "I know it's not Gryffindor but I'm sure it will at least keep you warm until you get back inside" Your thoughts were frozen and for a second you thought it was only you and him. He was towering over you, his arm raised towards you with his sweater balled up in his hand. "Plus it's too small for me" He chuckled. "It would look better on you" You had to look away to compose yourself from his words. Only if he knew how much you liked him
But then, you watched as his gaze flickered from you to someone passing behind.
It was like him taking your heart out of your chest and ripping it apart. His eyes sparkled with something more at her sight and a short smile climbed to his lips. You turned your head around and of course, it was her. Heather. She was a Hufflepuff chaser, always first in class and always having something bright and positive to say.
What a sight for sore eyes, brighter than the blue sky
Of course, she had to be prettier than you. Long brown hair braided for Quidditch, with crystal blue eyes. Her positive energy resonated through the hallway and you watched the scene roll before you. You had to painfully watch as his gaze chased after her even when she disappeared into the changing rooms.
She's got you mesmerized, while I die
"It's alright - but thanks." You brought him back to reality this time. Pushing his hand back towards him. "I'll freeze my way back to Hogwarts" You gave out a stiff chuckle and stood up before he could argue.
So you walked back up to the castle - your heart broken into a thousand pieces while your shoulders shook from the cold. Every day you had to be reminded that he loved someone else.
It all started last June, in the last week of class. Professor Trelawny paired them up in divination and ever since he only had eyes for her. She seemed to be perfect. A good sense of humor like you, mixed with the brains and the looks. She was even on the quidditch team, again like you...
But he only saw you as a friend. His childhood best friend who was placed in a different house than him. His childhood best friend who got into way too much trouble with the Weasley twins. His childhood best friend who was doomed to watch him love someone else from the other corner of the room.
But your misery couldn't end there. Because you knew Cedric and you knew bravery was his most beloved trait. You knew that it wouldn't be long until he asked her out. He had already been debating the idea since September.
And it killed you every single second. Watching him sulk over her - sitting next to her instead of you...
By the next week of December, you had to watch as they walked into the great hall - hand in hand.
Watch as she stands with you, holding your hand
Of course, she would have said yes. It was Cedric Diggory - the heart throb. Everyone liked him, everyone dreamed of him. He was kind, brave. The golden traits mixed into one beautiful being.
Somehow you thought that being his childhood friend would have made you higher up the list. That he would notice your lingering eyes and the way you reacted when he was close.
But you like her better, wish I were Heather
She was wearing his Hufflepuff sweater, the one he had offered you a week earlier. You wished you had accepeted it, not even that - that he would have given you the sweater as a token of his love, not as only helping a friend.
Wish I were Heather
You gave her your sweater
Of course, Cedric spotted you by the Weasley twins, and of course, he wanted to introduce you. Oblivious to how he painfully twisted the knife inside the wound. So he sat in front of you by George, and she sat by him, and you had to watch as he wrapped his arm around her.
put your arm 'round her shoulder, now I'm getting colder
The lunch went on, and with every second you felt another piece of yourself crumble away. So much that by the end your mind had fully gone blank. Desperately trying to tune out the way he was holding her, stealing glances with her and everything you wished could happen with you.
She's got you mesmerized while I die
The worst part is that it was so painfully obvious to everyone else. Fred and George played eye tennis, reading each other's minds in an attempt to find ways to help you.
Fred who sat by your side ended up placing a hand on your knee in an attempt to comfort you. It somehow made you feel better, but you knew nothing could fix the Cedric-shaped hole in your heart apart from the man himself.
So instead of holding in the pain, and pretending like everything was alright - you excused yourself, pretending you had finished your lunch early or simply wasn't hungry. Mumbling something about having extra homework to be done before class.
Your feet flew up to the hidden corner of Hogwarts only you and Cedric knew. It had become your hiding place, but he never seemed to come anymore. It was just you in this lonely corner of the world these past few months.
So you let the tears fall. Hot drops stained your cheeks and this time you couldn't do anything about it. It wasn't a random joke from the twins that could fix it. It wasn't his smile or something he would say that could cheer you up. It wasn't anything he could give you, because his heart was already taken. His heart had been partly given to someone else and in your lonely corner of the world, you wished you could have a piece. You wished that Heather hadn't taken all the pieces for herself.
Maybe it was selfish. But also how could you hate her? She had always been kind to you and even today she hadn't shown an ounce of jealousy towards your friendship.
But how could I hate her? She's such an angel
No one was to blame.
You had to live with your misery.
December turned into April and the pain in your chest had become nothing but a numb feeling.
The tears were frequent though. And it would always be the red-haired twins that would try to glue the pieces of your heart back with jokes. Bring the pieces back with soft laughter and dumb pranks.
You hated the way this made you drift away from him.
His presence seemed to get further as she stole every piece. She made him drift away from you like a deadly river that was so beautiful you wouldn't guess that stepping in it would drag you miles away, making you drown.
Was that what she was doing? Making him drown in her presence as the tied of her river dragged him further and further from you?
"Hey Y/n/n" George broke your thoughts, snapping his fingers in front of your eyes.
"S- sorry-" you blinked again, your eyes falling to the work on your lap.
"I asked you what you knew about Disneyland" He pointed to the paper; Muggle studies.
"I've been there once." You replied, your tone slightly off as the thoughts of Cedric tried to grab your train of thoughts again.
"And?" George paused and watched you swallow as you blankly stared at a spot on the carpet. "Y/n/n" He sighed and shuffled closer to you - placing a hand on your shoulder to catch your attention again. "Cedric's a dumb-dumb" He whispered. "He's dumb to have chosen her instead of you, and dumb to have abandoned you after they started dating."
You took a long breath in and out, looking back down to the homework on your lap.
George looked at the clock and clicked his tongue "Let's go to quidditch practice, it will cheer you up." He grinned and stood up, making you follow him.
Rain was pouring down the freshly cut lawn of the quidditch pitch and you looked as the house you were playing against started walking out.
Of course, practice had to be against Hufflepuff...
To your surprise, Heather wasn't glued to Cedric as they walked out - and both of their gazes seemed to be lost elsewhere.
Did they fight?
Something in the back of your mind was asking. Cedric looked pretty mad, and by the way he was guiding his team and giving orders you could tell he was.
From the other side of the pitch, Heather pointed a deadly glance at you. The rain was already bringing shivers, but her stare was even worst and it made you wonder what in the world happened.
Fred was happily walking to the pitch with his broom in hand. He walked to you with a grin from ear to ear.
"I've got something to tell you." He sang along and you spotted Geogre running towards the two of you.
"What's up?" You matched their grins
"There's a rumor."
"A very interesting rumor" George chimed from behind his twin.
"Cedric and Heather had a fight."
"A fight?" They got your attention. "About what?"
"2 rumors: That she cheated on him with Jamie Lammerson - they've been awfully close lately."
"Second rumor is that she did it because he's been acting more distant lately." Fred continued.
"That's he's been acting distracted." George finished.
"Distracted? By what?"
The twins looked at each other like they knew the biggest part of the puzzle that you were apparently clueless off.
"You!"
"Me?" You shook your head. "Impossible." You laughed, a bittersweet laugh by how hopeful they were trying to make you.
"Not as impossible as you think," They said in unison before making their way further the quidditch pitch, leaving you stranded with your own thoughts.
~
This time you hadn't made the mistake of forgetting your sweater, and Cedric noticed.
He noticed?
"I'm glad you brought your sweater today" He smirked. A smirk he hadn't given you in weeks.
What the heck was he doing talking to you? Shouldn't he be with Heather, laughing about a dumb joke she made?
You blinked. "Yeah."
Him, on the other hand, he had completely forgotten his. He was soaked with the rain that had started pouring down in the middle of the game, his wet hair dripping onto his shoulder and framing his handsome face.
"But you forgot yours." You noticed.
"I did." He scrunched up his face and twisted a part of his shirt to drench the water in a poor attempt to dry it.
Somehow it wasn't awkward. Even if he had spent weeks without talking to you, your friendship hadn't been broken.
Your smile lingered and you noticed that his stare did too. Weird.
Were the twins right?
Right until Heather stepped out of the changing room. Her wet hair was tied up in a bun as she was all wrapped in dry clothes.
Suddenly, the glim in his eyes died down and he cleared his throat - giving you a stiff nod before following her out and back up to the castle. You heard his words echo from a distance - something about needing to talk about their fight...
It made you frown a bit. The way his eyes saddened when he had to walk away... It made you wonder if everything was alright with him.
But you were on duty to clean the brooms.
The rain had made your job easier. It had partially removed the dirt from the collections of nimbus and cheap school brooms. You didn't mind the work and the thundering rain made relaxing music as you worked.
You dusted your hands and admired the clean brooms aligned on the floor of the big shed, awaiting polish and all the other products to make them stay pretty and shiny.
You opened the closet and frowned when you saw that the polish was empty, realizing you would have to go to the other side of the field to the second storage unit; the one with old broken brooms and extra products.
You grabbed your raincoat, securing the hood before darting across the pitch and slipping in between the tall bleachers and walking along the field downhill towards the crooked storage shed, half hidden with overgrown trees and bushes.
"Wait- we have to stop-" You heard mumbling from the inside, freezing as you realized people were in there. Great. You had forgotten this was a famous make-out spot.
"What do you mean stop? Is this about Cedric? Aren't you two practically broken up?" You gulped as you heard the name, your heartbeat quickening.
Maybe you heard the name wrong, or it was another Cedric?
But the female voice that spoke again felt way too familiar.
"Well, I think we sort of made up?" You balled up your fist. So it was true, Heather was cheating on Cedric - with who you expected to be Jamie.
Cedric wore his heart on his sleeve while she was doing all this behind his back...
"You made up!?" Jamie's voice became a bit angrier. "Heather I thought you were ending this? I thought you said he became interested in what's her name again?"
Was he talking about you? You munched at your lip in anxiety as the conversation went on.
The rain was still harshly falling against your raincoat, but you were frozen in place. It felt impossible to move with what you were overhearing.
"Y/n. She's one of the Gryffindor chasers. The one who broke your nose last game?"
"Oh, her. Aren't they like best friends of something?"
"Kind of." She mumbled - she seemed angry.
Jamie laughed at her reaction. "She's definitely a threat. I thought they were together before the two of you were a thing."
What you didn't see was Heather shooting daggers with her stare.
"Will you shut up?" She sounded mean, nothing like the facade she wore every day.
"Why? You dragged me here remember?" Jamie bickered back and you could sense tension in their words. This made you realize that one of them might be storming out at any moment now.
You turned back, making your way back up the small field leading up to the pitch. Walking through the bleachers again and back inside the shed.
What the fuck?
~
The next day that overheard conversation was eating you whole. Even Professor Lupin noticed the way you drifted away in Defense of the dark arts.
You were walking in the middle of the hallway as you headed to your next class, Fred and George on either side of you like usual. You were drifting off into thoughts again, running images of how you were going to tell Cedric, or how you were going to attempt to make this situation stop.
He was your best friend, and he didn't deserve this. He didn't deserve her.
"Hey!" A voice came from behind you, making you jump as you felt two hands on your shoulders. You all turned around to meet a bright-eyed Cedric.
He looked all happy and giddy and it made you raise an eyebrow.
"Can I steal Y/n for a second?" He looked at each of the twins.
"Ask her" they both pointed to you.
"Yeah" You nodded, not being able to help the small smile that bloomed on your lips at the sight of him. "What's up?"
"I wanted to talk to you." He looked behind your shoulder to make sure the twins had continued their way. "Somewhere quieter." He smiled and you almost thought he was blushing.
"Sure."
You followed him down to your secret place. Your hidden corner of the world where you had spent the last few months coming alone.
It felt weird seeing him there again, especially with you.
"I wanted to apologize." He awkwardly stood in front of you, scanning your features for a reaction.
"Apologize?" Your scrunched your eyebrows. "For what?"
"For how distant I've been lately..." He went back and forth on his heels and looked down to the floor. "For the way I've been ignoring you-"
"Cedric, it's ok."
"No, it's not. It's not because you didn't deserve this. I've been an awful friend lately and it's been because of-" He didn't want to stay it. He didn't want to voice the name of the person whom he knew had caused you and him all this pain.
He might have been oblivious for a long time, but now he knew.
And he wasn't going to take this opportunity for granted.
"Because of her"
"You can't blame her, it's normal, she's your girlfriend-"
"Was" He corrected you. "She was"
You blinked, your breath catching in the back of your throat as the words registered.
"What?"
"We broke up." You looked to the side as you tried to process the information.
Was that why he was acting all happy when he asked you to follow him here in the first place?
"But I thought?"
He shook his head.
"I told her it was over yesterday. We got into another fight because she complained about the fact that I was talking to you after practice." He took a step closer to you. "But she also made me realize that it wasn't her I liked" He looked down to his feet, and you could feel your heart leaping in your chest.
"I've heard things... about um- the way you might feel too. But- if it's not true, I'm not going to ask you to feel the same-" He sighed through his nose and suddenly your whole world lit up again. "But I want you to know."
"I'minlovewithyou" you muttered, barely audible.
He thought he had heard it but wasn't sure.
"What did you say?" He raised his gaze to your eyes, a small smirk across his lips.
"I'm in love with you" You said again, this time clear and loud enough.
You didn't think twice before placing your hand around his neck and dragging his face closer to yours. You closed the gap between your lips faster than you could say Quidditch.
The kiss took him by surprise, but when it registered he melted into it. But the situation caught up with you, and soon enough the kiss became clouded by giggles.
"I love you too."

Y/N played with the cup of tea that sat steaming before her, running the tips of her fingers around the golden rim. The soft chamomile scent rose up to her nose in charmed yellow tendrils, something that would’ve been calming had she not been sat in front of Professor Trelawny, answering uncomfortable questions and averting her gaze from her loony eyes.
“Dearie, I know that you may not want to share, but it’s incredibly important for the healing process. Even more important than the potions and the tea leaf readings.”
“Er...when I first fell asleep, all my dreams were just of past memories. Aft--”
“Excuse me.” Trelawny held up her hand as she scratched a heading on her parchment. “If you want to get better, you must add more details. What memories? Of what?”
Y/N swallowed, casting her eyes to the ceiling. “Erm...I saw Malfoy. Draco Malfoy.” Her breath hitched as the professor furrowed her eyebrows. Suddenly the teacup felt scalding in her hand. “I saw our rounds together. When we ran into the mirror, that is.”
“What mirror?”
“The Mirror of Erised.”
Trelawny raised her eyebrow--a quick motion but not entirely unassuming. “Interesting. Very, very curious indeed. Go on.”
“I saw us...together. I didn’t think that it was a special mirror until afterwards because it looked the same. We were...uhm...together.”
It took a few seconds of staring at Trelawny’s googly eyes before she realized she’d just repeated herself.
“And after that….” Y/N pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to draw out the rest of her memories. “I don’t remember everything else. I’m sorry. It was just everything that I remember about Malfoy in particular...like, the first time I saw him, what it was like to talk to him for the first time, running away from him in the Slytherin dungeons that one night I had to stay overnight for potions...that’s it.”
Her professor nodded gravely, shifting in the only chairs that the hospital wing provided to visitors--hard, cold mahogany wood. “Well done. And after? Once Miss Severyjn woke you up?”
Her throat felt dry. Of course I’d have to recount what happened. Of course I have to tell them about how I had a dream about making out with him in my dorm. Of course. Just my luck.
“I’m sorry,” said Y/N. “It’s just...weird. It felt too private.”
Trelawny seemed slightly empathetic at this; her eyes seemed even kinder (albeit still dreamy) than usual. “I’ve heard it all, love. No need to be ashamed.”
“Okay.” She took a steadying breath. “I...well...it’s fuzzy. I can’t remember exactly why we ended up ditching our rounds and why we decided to go to my dorm instead.”
It was difficult to continue when she saw her companion’s eyebrows shoot up a few inches, but she steeled herself.
“It took me a long time to unlock my dorm door--I think I was nervous, or something, because my hands were shaking too hard to hold my wand steady. He moved my hand aside and said something--I can’t quite remember what--and he just unlocked it himself. I think I dragged him in by his tie, and he told me that I was trembling, and then before I knew it he was cupping my face. I remember being surprised by how warm his hands were. I thought they’d be colder.”
“Go on, doll. I only need a little bit more.”
“It’s awfully embarrassing, you know,” said Y/N. “I hardly know him.”
“Don’t you worry. Your dream was created by whatever traces of magic the Mirror of Erised left on you. This has nothing to do with how you view Malfoy.”
She dared to smile at this point, mostly as a way to pretend like she wasn’t mortified recounting her tale. “He kissed me. I don’t know if you need any more details, but that’s the grand picture of it all. He kissed me, and I didn’t stop him, and now I feel like a proper creeper, having fantasies about a boy who wants nothing to do with me.”
The wrinkles on Trelawny’s forehead deepened. “Don’t fret. The Mirror of Erised is a very powerful thing. You couldn’t have influenced that dream to work any different than it had. On that note…” She brushed herself off and rolled up the parchment. “You’ve given me enough to work with. The reason why I ask is because sometimes certain dreams can be prophetic--sometimes regarding important wizarding events that the headmaster ought to be aware of--or potentially deadly. Both instances require a bit more...of an intensive treatment regiment, if you will. I’m happy to report to you that your bout of Dream Sickness shouldn’t develop into anything more sinister. I’ll recommend that you stay here for a bit longer, just to ensure that you don’t slip into it again, but you should be able to have visitors and wean yourself off of Dreamless Sleep. Rest up, darling. You have a lot of sleeping to do.”
Y/N smiled weakly as she allowed Trelawny to pluck the teacup from her hands and swirl the leaves about.
“Nothing but good news in your future, just as I suspected. Good night!”
oOo
Life in the infirmary led Y/N to walk a wobbly line of consciousness. Once Madame Pomfrey lowered the doses of her potion, dreams began to once again tickle at her sleeping mind. Sometimes people she knew would appear next to her bedside, and she was never able to tell if it was real. During one of these instances, Rena appeared to hold her hand and recount the hottest gossip that she missed.
“...And after that, Parvati told Lavender Brown that she was nothing but a ditz whose only acts of Gryffindor bravery had to do with the fact that she left her room every morning wearing THAT disaster of a cloak…but I’m boring you, I can tell.”
Y/N, or perhaps Dream Y/N, whichever one she was, sent her a soft smile. “S’okay. Tell me more.”
“Oh, I totally forgot!” Rena squeezed her hand. “I talked to Flitwick about the whole incident. He sends his condolences. He also says that you’re excused from rounds until we reassign partners. No more late nights with Malfoy!”
She rolled her eyes, shuffling further under the blankets. This was just a dream, just a dream.
“Sucks to be him. He’s gonna have to walk all those big, scary halls alone at night.”
Rena cracked a grin, but something flashed across her eyes that Y/N couldn’t quite decipher. “Yeah. He already had his knickers in a twist over having to do it the first night. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he missed you.”
“He missed having someone to harass, you mean,” corrected Y/N.
“Yeah, I suppose so. He’s not all bad all the time though, you know. I mean, granted, he is a rich little prat, but he has some good in him.”
“Got a crush, hm?”
Rena’s eyes shifted again. She was nervous thought Y/N. But why? She quickly decided to ask Madame Pomfrey for a higher dose of Dreamless Sleep the next time she saw her as a lucid member of society. This stuff is getting out of hand.
Before Dream Rena left, she dropped off a bouquet of flowers--white roses, her favorite. Y/N tried to thank her, but she felt herself being tugged softly to a different dream, away, away, away from her dear friend.
It took a rough shake of the shoulder from Madame Pomfrey before she was awake again.
“Drink,” she said, forcing a goblet of something foul into her hands. “You’ve been delirious. You need to wake up.”
The taste that hit her tongue was bitter and laced with the nostalgia of O.W.Ls season last year--Wide-Eye Potion. Her consciousness came crashing down on her like a cool tide and she became aware of how much sweat was dripping down her back.
Gross.
“Feel better?”
Y/N nodded, but as she turned to set her now-empty goblet on the table next to her, her stomach lurched.
A vase of white roses stood, unimposing in nature but anxiety inducing when she considered the implications they carried. Rena’s visit hadn’t been a dream--and her last excuse to see Draco, the boy who had made her life hell for the last few weeks, was gone.
So why did it feel like she’d just been punched in the stomach?
oOo
Exactly a week and one day after she had been admitted to the hospital, Madame Pomfrey allowed her a special privilege--the chance to take a walk around the castle grounds. After breathing the same stale hospital wing air, Y/N was eager to fill her lungs with something colder and fresh.
“Stick close to the gravel path,” said Madame Pomfrey, the wrinkles in her forehead deepening with each word she spoke. “Do not, and I mean, do not, get near a single magical artifact or so help me Merlin. If you feel the slightest bit feverish, you will come right back here and you will not--under any circumstances--lie down and shut your eyes. Am I understood?”
“Yes, Madame Pomfrey.” The words fell out of Y/N’s mouth without her really taking any notice; instead, she watched the way the trees moved outside, swaying softly with the wind. “I promise I’ll be careful.”
The nurse nodded--a brisk, tense motion. “Good. Be back here in 30 minutes. Any later and I will employ the entire staff of this castle to come track you down so I can personally drag you back here.”
Y/N had forgotten how air could be crisp--crisp she thought giddily--as she waltzed her way down the steps and into the courtyard. Her loafers made a satisfying tap on the stone that she almost missed when the pathway turned to gravel, the rocks crunching under toe instead. But regardless, she was stoked. In that moment, she had never felt more alive, not even after she’d gotten near straight Os last year...but seconds later, she was hit with something other than euphoria: namely, a silk clad black shoulder.
“Ow.”  Y/N went face first into the ground, her cheek bouncing off the hard floor.
“Ah, fuck! Fuck! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” A posh voice, no doubt the owner of the silky shoulder, sounded from above her. “Oh, oh my god, Y/N? Is that you?”
She rolled over on her back and looked right up into the concerned eyes of Draco Malfoy.
“Er...Hi,” she said. “Lovely day, isn’t it?”
His eyebrows furrowed as he looked down at her. “Are you alright? Why are you out of the hospital wing?”
“Madame Pomfrey let me go for a walk. She said that it’s good for me. Also she told me not to...fuck, I’m not supposed to lie down!”
The flash of terror in her eyes seemed to say enough, and before she knew it, he was hauling her up off the ground.
“Why are they letting you walk out all alone?” asked Draco, his tone demanding but not entirely uncaring.
“I think they presumed that everyone on the path would have the common decency to avoid a poor sick girl coming out for her first walk in a week, but clearly they thought too soon.”
Draco still hadn’t completely let go of her shoulders, where his hands were clasped firmly around the sides in a gesture meant to steady. He snorted at that moment, a bit of his old self shining back through as he narrowed his eyes down good-naturedly at her. “It’s hardly like the entire school has been issued a warning that you’ve been released.”
“Oh, quit stroking my ego like that.” Y/N tilted her eyebrow to examine him. For the most part, her old rounds partner looked no different--same strikingly light eyes, same aristocratic features, same expensive and fashionable apparel--but the bags under his eyes were new. “Have you been sleeping? Like, at all?”
“Me?”
“Yeah, you. Who else?”
His hands moved away from their supporting position to scratch the back of his neck. “Oh, er, not much. I keep worrying about getting what you came down with. Rena told me about the Dream Sickness and how it was because of the mirror, and it’s just hard for me to sleep.”
“Oh. I’m sorry about that.”
“Yeah.” He shifted his weight back and forth, his hands shoved deep into his pockets.
“What exactly did Rena tell you?” Y/N’s words snapped Draco back to attention. “And if you say everything I will lie down on the ground, go back into my dream coma, and tell everyone it’s your fault.”
“Well, then.” A smirk danced across his lips. “Nothing. Rena told me nothing.”
Y/N stared at him for a few seconds before lowering herself to the ground, never breaking eye contact.
“What--what are you doing?”
His face went out of her eye line as she lay flat on the ground, stretching her limbs out to vaguely resemble a starfish and exhaling a heavy sigh. “I’m going to sleep right here. When Madame Pomfrey finds me, barely toeing the line between life and death, I’ll have rehearsed a speech in my mind about how Draco Malfoy knocked a poor sick girl over in the gravel pathway and then harassed her to the point of exhaustion.”
When Y/N opened her eyes, she could see Draco come into vision. His green and silver striped tie swung in the air above her as he leaned over her, a slight grimace on his face.
“I don’t think you were sorted into the right house.”
“Keep your comments to yourself,” she said, shutting her eyes again and taking in a deep breath. “Some of us are trying to sleep.”
“I thought you were--Y/N, wait!” A hand reached out to gently shake her shoulder. “Wait! I thought you were kidding!”
“I never kid. I’m very serious. Leave me be, now. I have a speech to write.”
She heard a loud and rather over dramatic sigh above her before a hand started tugging at her arm, lifting it up over her head and pulling.
“Draco! Stop!”
“Calling me Draco, now, huh? Awfully intimate when you’re about to frame me for attempted murder,” he said, his tone surprisingly consistent and clear for someone hauling a whole adult woman off the ground. “Can you at least try to help me? A little bit?”
“Fuck off,” was the only thing coming out of Y/N’s mouth as he pulled her to her feet for the second time in less than 10 minutes. Once they were both standing, just barely a meter apart, Y/N found herself at a complete loss for words. Draco was looking down at her with an emotion displayed across his features that she could not quite place, and it made her stomach twist.
“You have gravel stuck in your hands.”
His voice took her by surprise. It had softened considerably, almost to a whisper. There was none of the usual snottiness or nasal judgement present--just a breathy declaration that made her knees weak from the sudden shift in energy.
His hand moved towards hers, and he met her eyes with a gaze that asked “is this okay?” Y/N couldn’t help but just stare, wide-eyed and unable to blink, as he gently took her hand and began pulling out the rocks.
“I have to tell you something,” said Draco, still quiet and unimposing in tone. “I...I know that this might come as a surprise, and I know that you...er...probably don’t care to hear this, but, erm…”
Y/N just stared.
“I’ve been feeling this way for a while, and I just didn’t really figure it out until you, uh, you got sick, and I know I’ve been a proper prat to you and that you have no need to reciprocate anything, truly, but, ehm…”
His adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he squeezed his eyes shut, like he was in pain or something.
“Spit it out, Draco, I don’t have all day,” added Y/N lightly.
“Miss Y/L/N!”
A voice boomed across the courtyard, making Y/N nearly jump out of her skin. A quick turn revealed that it was Madame Pomfrey. And a furious Madame Pomfrey at that.
“You foolish, foolish girl,” said Pomfrey, seizing her by the arm and dragging her away. “Speaking to the same boy in your dreams? Why don’t you just go and lick the Mirror of Erised and fall asleep right after? You give me migraines.”
“I’m so sorry Madame Pomfrey! I didn’t mean to!” Apologies rolled out of Y/N’s mouth at a rapid-fire pace, not stopping until she’d been escorted back to her bed.
“I am so disappointed in you,” the older lady snapped as she stormed over to the neighboring bed, angrily wringing out a washcloth. “No visitors. Not until you have a perfect bill of health.”
Hospital air had never felt so stale.

20 RDR QUESTIONS
16. If R* were to make a third RDR game, what would you want it to be about and who would you want the protagonist to be?
>I think it’d be cool for R* to do one based around younger Hosea and Dutch to show HOW the gang started. We might see little shitty John Marston too lmao. But I also think seeing one that takes place at the end of RDR1 would be cool, with playing as Jack. Maybe finding out who his real dad is since there was a lot on that in the second game? But might be cool to have it from a whole new POV too, with people we don’t know or just barely met. Anything would be cool.
17. Did you help John escape or go back for the money? Why?
>I helped John escape because Arthur is fuckin dying and he doesn’t need the money. You don’t get it anyway? Like,,, Theres no point in the money thing I think its stupid. But I also only do high honor Arthur so maybe if I played low honor it’d make sense but I ain’t about to have Arthur die like that.
18. Which gang member do you wish Arthur interacted with more?
>Oh my god really anyone whos not Swanson. Listen, I love Swanson, but the bitch needs to stop showing up when I’m tryin to watch Trelawny do magic tricks and drown everything out. But probably Charles or Hosea, a really good friend and of course someone who helped bring Arthur up. Lenny would be great too because obviously Arthur and him have a strong father/son kind of bond going on.

Horseshoe Overlook - Paying a Social Call
Tumblr media
Four days went by as the coarse ropes dug sores into her wrists and ankles. She was still wearing the dress that she had changed into before her father was killed. She was only offered water early in the morning and food late in the evening. Her stomach constantly rattled, telling her brain that she was on the brink of starving as well as fatigue. She felt utterly weak and severely dehydrated. She leaned her head back as she felt another wave of nausea hit her, wondering if death would be a better option.
"What's wrong? Ya hungry?" She heard Colm mock as he sat in one of the chairs at the small table, counting heaps of money.
"Not too bad," She croaked, not wanting to give up her fight.
"Good, 'cause ya got a few more days," He smirked.
"Before what? You kill me? I can't wait." She rolled her eyes.
"No, before we turn ya in." He replied.
"I'm countin' the hours." She replied, looking up at the ceiling, wishing that those days would never come.
"Boss, you sure this is a good spot?" One of his men asked as he walked into the cabin, looking down at Minnie before giving her a sharp kick to the hip, rattling her wave of nausea once more.
Colm's brows rose as he put down the money he was counting, "We ain't been shot up yet, have we?" He snarled. "Besides, looks like her pa had some money stashed away in the chest there. Looks to be a few thousand." He chuckled, purposely fanning the money in front of Minnie, showing her that it was in fact the money she would gift to her father every time she came to visit, realizing that he never deposited it as it was stolen money.
She frowned as she remembered the thought before her hazel eyes stared daggers into Colm's, "That don't bother me." She taunted.
He pursed his lips as he didn't like being mocked by the only woman he wanted most. He thought twice about killing her himself after he had his way with her, but something about her emerald hazel eyes and her flushed complexion made him rise and he couldn't think of her feeling cold.
"What're we doin' with her?" One of his men asked.
"Few more days and I'll have you and Tom take her to Saint Denis and turn her in for the bounty. That money will be enough to get us outta this dump and somewhere nice. Sell her horse, too." Colm suggested as he finished counting the money before storing some of it in the brick of the chimney, keeping it hidden.
"And you?"
"I'm gonna finish countin' this money here and have a few of my guys follow me back to our other hideout to stash it. A place like this is likely to catch like a torch. Can't have all of it goin' to waste." Colm explained.
"Alright, boss. I'll keep a lookout while you're away," The old man said. Minnie looked at him disgusted as his thin brown hair and thick mustache coaxed his face. His brown eyes had the look of hatred in them as he did his best to be at the top of the pack, earning a special place in the O'Driscoll gang.
───※ ·❆· ※───
Arthur stretched as he awoke with the morning sun, embracing the cool spring air as it was his ideal temperature. He walked to the fresh pot of stew, spooning his bowl full before getting a tin of coffee, wondering what he was going to do throughout the day. He looked around to see what members were missing as they all had a few side quests and activities to do, seeing that every member, except Trelawny, was not present.
"Mister Morgan," He heard a familiar voice say, meeting him at the table he was eating at, taking a seat next to him.
"Yes, Miss Grimshaw?" He asked.
"Mister Matthews gave me a message for you, he said when it was convenient to head into Emerald Ranch. He's lookin' at a few business things there." Susan explained.
"Okay." Arthur nodded.
Susan chuckled, "He'll find something, too, he always does."
"That he does." Arthur chuckled.
"Well, you be well, Mister Morgan," She smiled.
"I'm always well, Miss Grimshaw." He assured as he put his daily token of gratitude within the camp funds box. With his tin of coffee, he made his rounds throughout the camp, smirking at Kieran Duffy still tied to the tree since they arrived in Horseshoe Overlook. 'He's damn lucky we picked out a tree with shade,' Arthur thought to himself as he walked up to the young man.
"Please, talk to them for me!" Kieran begged.
"You got some speakin' to do of your own... About that old gang of yours." Arthur taunted.
"I said... I told you... I don't know nothing!"
"That's what I thought."
"Woah! Hold your horses there," Dutch intervened as he was accompanied by Bill, walking quickly to the situation, afraid that Arthur was going to start beating the man. "It seems the cat has got our friend here's tongue. I was thinking Mister Williamson could have a word."
"You ready to talk boy?" Bill taunted, puffing his chest.
"I told you, Mister... I told all of you. I don't know nothing, okay? They-They ain't no friends of mine. I just been ridden with them for a while." Kieran explained.
"Horseshit!" Bill hissed, clenching his fists. "You see, we heard that part, so why don't you tell the truth? Dutch, what do you want me to do?" He asked.
"Hurt him so the next time he opens his mouth, it is to tell us what is going on!" Dutch commanded. "Ah, who am I kiddin'? One of O'Driscoll's boys couldn't open his mouth but he'd tell a lie. Screw it, let's just have some fun, huh? Geld him." He said, using his fingers to mimic a scissor to Bill, seeing that he was eager to do the deed.
"Oh yeah!" Bill replied, quickly breaking away to retrieve the tongs from the fire.
"What's he doing? Where's he going?" Kieran asked before Dutch pulled down the young man's pants, exposing him.
"Oh don't worry! They're only balls, boy! Just gonna cause you trouble!" Dutch warned. "You know, in Imperial Rome, eunuchs was among the happiest and most loyal of courtiers." He explained.
"No, no, no, no... You're kidding me right?" Kieran panted, his legs shaking as Bill was coming closer with the hot tongs.
"Of course." Dutch replied.
"You sick bastards! What do you want from me?" Kieran cried, trying his best to keep his legs pressed together.
"Well, you are going to talk. The only question is now or after we got these little fellers off?" Dutch explained.
"Okay! Okay! Listen, I know where O'Driscoll's holed up and you're right, he don't like you any more than you like him. He's supposedly at Six Point Cabin! He's been talkin' about it for months. I'll take you there... Serious," Kieran panted. His eyes looked around frantically, hoping that the men wouldn't continue their torture antics. He looked over at Arthur briefly as he never said a word while Dutch and Bill were interrogating him, regarding the pale look on his face as if he were worried, but he didn't think much of it. "I don't like him. I mean, I like him even less than I like you, no offense."
"None taken." Dutch replied, fanning off Bill to put away the gelding tongs.
"Okay then, partner," Arthur finally said, taking his knife and cutting Kieran free from the tree. "Why don't you take a few of us up there right now. I got this, Dutch," Arthur nodded, jerking the young man along with him as well as Bill. "Should be fun. Alright you, come on!" Arthur said as he shoved Kieran in front of him as he pulled up his trousers, trying to hide his embarrassment.
Bill and Arthur chuckled along behind him as they walked to their horses, "Let's both hope you ain't tryin' to trick us, O'Driscoll." Arthur warned.
"I ain't no O'Driscoll!" Kieran protested.
"But you sure as shit was," Arthur growled. "John, come on! We got a social call needs makin'! Where we headin'?" He asked as his heart was beating rapidly. Six Point Cabin, the same cabin the old man he met in town told him about. The same cabin that he associated with Minnie Barlow as the old man was in fact her father. 'He better hope she ain't dead,' He hissed to himself, taking out his anger towards the young man, still wondering to himself as to why he felt the need to be so protective over her when they never even officially met.
"Up into the hills behind Valentine, I'll show you." Kieran said.
Arthur groaned as he mounted his horse, "John, you take this little rattlesnake with you... Any nonsense, kill him."
"Sure." John replied, also mounting his horse.
"We're gonna pay your buddies our respects." Arthur mentioned.
"He taking us to Colm?" John asked.
"That's what he says," Arthur grumbled. "Come on."
'Off to rescue a damsel in distress,' Arthur thought to himself as he was hoping this ride to the cabin was quick.
───※ ·❆· ※───
Arthur's heart pounded as they approached the cabin, seeing that it was overrun with O'Driscoll's. He grew angry at what they had done, not even knowing if she or her father was alive or not.
"The cabin's in the clearin' down there," Kieran whispered. "There'll be a bunch of fellers hidin' out there too."
"Are these fellers armed?" Arthur asked.
"Armed. Drunk. Wary of strangers." He replied.
"And Colm O'Driscoll?" Arthur added.
"Oh, he'll be holed up in that cabin. Be passed out, booze blind, likely as not."
"Over there, someone's comin'." Bill warned as he motioned for them all to get down, John doing so by covering Kieran's mouth to keep him from yelling to his former gang.
"So, uh, who's gonna tell him we ain't got nothin' for the pot?" The men heard the strangers say from below the ridge.
"Let me think, the feller that spooked the game I reckon!" The other replied.
"I'm gonna drain it, I-I'll catch up," One of them said, leaning against a tree to relieve himself.
Arthur looked to John and Kieran, "Shh... Come on," He whispered to Bill, sneaking down the ridgeline.
"What're we doin' about the pisser, Morgan? The one by the tree?" Bill asked as they both took out throwing knives from their possession.
"He's yours, Williamson," Arthur directed, watching Bill nod as he easily took out the man before they both moved on to the pair of members waiting on him, also keeping watch on the camp.
"Good work. We movin' on the camp?" They heard John whisper after killing the two guards. "I left our guide up there. He's meek as a little lamb." John chuckled.
"He better be." Arthur growled.
"What about the one on the log?" John whispered.
"Kill him quietly, Marston," Arthur directed. "Get your hands dirty for a change." He teased.
John chuckled as he made his job look easy, hearing a 'Jesus Christ' from Arthur as he witnessed it.
Their stealth killings didn't go unnoticed as they were spotted by a lone guard, triggering the hail of gunfire in the quiet oasis of the wilderness. A few, long minutes later, Arthur finally halted his gunfire, insisting for Bill and John to start searching the bodies. "I'm gonna go search the cabin!" Arthur announced before being shocked at the discovery of Jameson's body hidden in the old wagon just outside the cabin. His heart broke as the old man had so much to live for, yet he wondered if the same happened to his daughter or if she had escaped. As much as he wished to rescue her, his mind immediately thought of the worst. He sighed as he holstered his pistol, walking up the steps to the cabin before being pushed down by the door, greeted by a smirking man and a shotgun barrel in his face.
Arthur accepted his fate as he braced himself for the blast, only to be halted by the man above him being shot. With a confused look, he turned his head to see Kieran shakily holding a pistol, shooting the man and saving Arthur's life.
"You alright?" Kieran asked as he made sure the enemy stopped breathing.
Arthur's breath hitched as he didn't even want to think that an O'Driscoll saved his life, let alone admit it. He lay his head back down, taking a deep breath, "Sure, thank you." He replied sarcastically before groaning to his feet, storming to the young man as he was soon met by Bill and John. "Colm O'Driscoll... He ain't here. You set us up!" He growled. "Come here!" He demanded as the young man slowly approached him with his hands up. Arthur was sure that if he was a dog, his tail would be tucked between his legs while he pissed himself.
"What?" He dared to ask.
"You set us up!" Arthur hissed.
"No, I didn't!" He protested.
"You did, Colm O'Driscoll ain't here!" Arthur argued, aiming his pistol at the young man's head.
"He was here, I swear! I sw- If I was setting you up, I-I wouldn't have saved your life," Kieran pleaded.
"It's a good point, Arthur," Bill intervened, putting himself in between Arthur and Kieran.
"Alright then, go on, get out of here." Arthur addressed.
"Eh?"
"I won't kill ya."
"I didn't set you up,"
"Get lost!" Arthur demanded.
"Get lost?"
Arthur's face wrinkled as he grew angry, grabbing Kieran by the collar, "I'm lettin' you run away now go on, get out of here!"
"That's as good as killing me!" Kieran argued, daring to walk back towards Arthur. "Out there, without you- Colm O'Driscoll's gonna lose his mind about this!" Kieran pointed.
"So?" Arthur scoffed, resting his palm on his hip.
"So I'm one of you now." Kieran addressed, pointing his finger at him.
Arthur sighed, scratching at his beard, "Give me a break. Aright then," He said as he walked closer to Kieran, pointing his finger in his face, "But I'm warning you."
"Oh, I know,"
"Come on, let's get to camp." Arthur directed as his immense heartbreak couldn't dare to handle the sight of a deceased Jameson and Minnie Barlow.
"So you got the cash then?" Kieran asked, stopping Arthur, Bill, and John in their tracks.
"What cash?"
"Yeah, there's usually some cash in the chimney. Colm always talks about it whenever he plans to take over someplace," Kieran said as he attempted to walk towards the house, only to be stopped by Arthur.
"I'll check it! Rest of you boys get to camp, quick."
"See, Arthur, I ain't so bad!" Kieran proposed.
Arthur turned on his heel, "Hey Bill, you tell Dutch old Kieran ain't worth killin' just yet!" The men nodded as they made their way to camp while Arthur was eager to search the cabin for clues of Minnie Barlow, only to be stopped dead in his tracks by the woman herself, tied up harshly to the cot post with her head tilted back. His jaw dropped as he assumed her to be dead by her pale complexion. He lost all moisture in his mouth as he was still shocked. He hesitated to take a step towards her, even though he didn't think she had any life in her. 'Jesus,' He thought to himself, feeling that it was wrong to search the cabin, feeling like he was robbing her.
He slowly moved around the cabin, the two photos on the hearth catching his attention. He grinned as he looked at the photo of Jameson and his wife on their wedding day before looking at the photo of Minnie as an infant. "Minnie Anna Barlow," He said to himself before putting the photo back on the mantle before turning back to look at her still in the same position. "Guess I'll bury you and your pa someplace proper," He said quietly, knowing that she wouldn't reply. He took out his knife, cutting the rope from her ankles before locating the rope tying her wrists together, finding that there was no rope binding her. As he realized what was happening, the cold feeling of a revolver's barrel was pressed against his exposed chest. 'Smart woman,' He thought, his blue eyes meeting her hazel eyes once more. His breath hitched as she was the most beautiful woman he had seen in quite a while, which was a long while. He didn't want to admit that no matter how beautiful she was, she scared him.
"I don't think so, cowboy," She hissed. She recognized his eyes immediately, but she didn't know what he was capable of and why he was there. In a way, she was grateful that he was, even in the unfortunate circumstances that were about to unfold.
"Woah, easy," He pleaded, holding his hands up in surrender. "I'm not here to hurt you."
"Then why are you here?" She questioned, slowly standing to her feet.
"It's a long story," He sighed, shaking his head, hiding his embarrassment by the brim of his hat.
"What? You one of those O'Driscoll's comin' to finish me off?"
"No, we just killed all them O'Driscoll's, Miss," He tried to explain. "I-I met a man named Jameson in Valentine a few days back and he invited me up here to go huntin'. Well, a couple of weeks ago, we picked up a straggler that ran with Colm and were plannin' to use him as bait. We threatened to torture him if he didn't talk and he said that he knew Colm was plannin' to hide out here and I immediately thought of Jameson," He explained, his hands still up in surrender.
Minnie sighed, lowering her weapon, "Jameson is my father. Colm killed him. He was plannin' to turn me in for the bounty. I don't have much to live for anymore, just take me in." She frowned. As much as Arthur would've liked to have eight-thousand dollars, he couldn't bring himself to take her in, especially in such a fragile state. He could tell she was on the brink of personal famine as well as dehydration. "Do you want me to take you in?" He asked.
She nodded as she refused to look him in the eyes, ashamed of herself. He frowned too before daring to step closer to her, "You know what I'll have to do." He stated.
"I don't care what you have to do. Those men tossed me around like a ragdoll and I couldn't fight back. They starved me and tried to take advantage of me, only to beat me harder when I fought back. Please, Mister, swinging by the neck is far better than this pain I'm in now," She frowned, holding her wrists together, waiting for him to tie them together.
There was no way he was turning her in, but he wasn't going to tell her that. He looked down at the sores on her wrists before looking back at her delicate face, "Do you have any more weapons on you?" He said quietly.
She shook her head, dropping the pistol on the floor.
"Turn around," He said even softer, hating himself for even having to talk this way to a woman, especially one he was minorly attracted to, but he shook that thought from his head as he had to treat her just like every other bounty. He had no idea what she was capable of.
She nodded as she did as he asked, turning her back to him, hoping that he was just going to shoot her, but he didn't. She started to sob quietly as she felt his calloused hands gently grip her wrists, gently tying them back together, trying ever-so desperately to not cause more pain to her.
"Thank you for bein' so cooperative, Miss," He said as he started to guide her towards the front door. He was relieved that she didn't respond as the sound of her voice alone made his skin flush. "You have a horse?" He asked, even though he already knew the answer.
"Yeah, tied up over there," She replied, her eyes fixated on the ground below. "C-Can I see my father?" She asked. His breathing hitched as he didn't know what to say. "I...Erm, I don't know where he is..."
"I do," She frowned, looking at her feet. "They dumped him over there - didn't even bury him," He nodded as his reply, simply following her to where she saw the O'Driscoll's dump her father's body. He stood back to give her privacy, but couldn't help the burn in his chest as he heard her sob after collapsing to her knees. After a few moments, he slowly approached her, seeing that Jameson's body had already started decaying. If he wouldn't have known Jameson by his mustache and clothing, he would've looked like a stranger. "Miss... W-We need to go. The law probably heard all of those gunshots..."
"Then leave me here. They'll come for me." She cried as he helped her to her feet, noting that she was weak.
"I can't do that, Miss."
"Why not? Have other plans for me?" She snapped. He understood that she did it because she was scared and no longer valued herself, feeling like she had given up.
"No, that's not it. C'mon, let's go," He said quietly, untethering her horse from the tree he had been tied to. "Do you have any belongings you wanna take with you?"
She bit her lip, "His banjo and the money I had left for him. I'll burn it before I let the O'Driscoll's get the rest of it... And some of my clothes."
"Okay, I can help you, but we gotta hurry up and get outta here," He warned.
"This I know," She replied. He nodded as he cut her loose, keeping the pistol he had taken from her in his off-hand holster, afraid that she was going to try to rob him. He helped her grab her essentials from the cabin, especially the two photos that were on the mantle that he remembered. He helped her put her extra clothes in a burlap sack, wrapping the two photo frames in a pillowcase to protect them before putting them in the sack too. She grabbed her father's banjo as Arthur slung the burlap sack over his shoulder, ushering her out the door of the cabin, hearing a few weeps coming from her pale lips as he couldn't understand how hard it was for her to leave her home, especially knowing that her father was still there. "You think you're okay to ride your horse?"
"H-Honestly, no. I don't have enough energy." She panted.
He nodded before turning around and picking her up to place her on his horse before tethering her horse to his own, putting her belongings on the saddle, tethering them with the provided saddle strings. He couldn't explain why he did so, but he had figured it was because he was selfish and craving a woman's attention, even if it wasn't intentional. His action didn't make much sense, but he didn't care. 'At least I asked her,' He thought.
"Alright, let's get you back to camp," He said.
"Camp? I-I thought you were takin' me in for the bounty?" She questioned, confused.
"You thought a lot of things, Miss. Remember when you saved my life on that train?" He questioned as he looked up at her from the ground as he was about to mount his horse.
"Yeah?" She questioned, holding brief eye contact with "the man in blue" as he had verified his identity with her as they have in fact met before.
"Let me save yours."
