Repurposing “Betta Tanks”

I’m a big fan of ‘upcycling’ stuff and I hate just throwing things away (especially pricier things).

There’s SO MUCH (literally a ridiculous amount) of misinformation about bettas that gets circulated by pet stores, facebook users, pinterest users, youtube users, and even betta-centered websites! There’s also plenty of people who have gone out and purchased bettas and “betta tanks” only to find out later that they’re completely unsuitable homes for their new finned friends! D: (If you’d like to know more about bettas and proper husbandry, check out this post) It would seriously suck if I went out and bought one of those Aqueon Betta Falls tanks (they are completely inappropriate for any fish or live animals and they can seriously injure bettas and other fish), which costs around $40 btw, only to learn that I’ve got to start totally from scratch and shell out another $40-100 PER safe and proper setup (the betta falls holds up to 3 fish, so that’s up to 3 new setups). and then after buying a whole new tank and equipment, I’m left with an expensive death trap. I wouldnt feel right selling it anyone else (who might use it to house bettas) but I also don’t want to just throw it away. Do I just put it back in the box and put it up on some high shelf in the garage? NO. NO I DO NOT. I’m going to find a good use for it, and I’m hoping that some of the ideas listed below give y’all some ideas too! more under the cut

Wall Mounted Fish Bowls

[Source] These are usually anywhere from 1/2 - 1 Gallon, and are available from a number of brands and sellers on amazon and ebay. The idea is pretty cool and novel, but obviously not a healthy home for a betta (or other fish / invert). Consider using it as a hanging terrarium or planter! You can do fresh cut flowers, marimos, pothos, bamboo, java fern, anubias, or even an entire miniature aquascape! Funny enough, you can actually buy hanging glass terrariums / planters as well, so here’s some visuals!

EXCEPT MARIMOS!! :DD Marimos love a little bit of current and can be kept in bowls, jars, or tiny tanks! I think that having a little bit of current and some mini marimos and even some miniature decor would make an awesome edition to any desk, especially since it comes with a light and pump! :) Feel free to get creative tho! you can grow bamboo, pothos, and other plants out of it as well, or do a miniature aquascape, or even do some simple aquatic plants like anacharis, or an anubias nana petite one a tiny piece of driftwood~ have fun with it! :)

Betta Falls

OF DEATH. these tanks can seriously injure your fish, are too small to hold a stable cycle, will stress the fish out (because they can see each other) and are honestly no bigger than the cups you bought them in :/

What’s really cool about this tank is the design, though. Its got this cascading waterfall type design which would probably be awesome for marimos since they get their round shape from being rolled around by the current! A bit of flow is the way to go~ Also, being able to do 3 totally different (or completely complementary) sections is what makes this an especially fun and challenging upcycle!

- You can do some cool rocks or miniature aquarium decor and use it as a waterfall, similar to how these little countertop fountains are used - You can grow bamboo or other semi-aquatic plants out of these compartments - You can grow fully aquatic plants in these compartments - You can even add some fake bettas if you want to add a lil fishy centerpiece - You can do any combination of different things and you’ve got 3 compartments to decorate however you see fit! :D

Besides plants, betta tanks also make fantastic enclosures for invertebrates!! :D I’m talkin about your snails, your millipedes, your slings (baby tarantulas), and even your mantids!!

@hipsterzombiesquad took this 1/2 gallon “betta tank” and turned it into a small terrarium for their snails!! :D It’s literally the cutest thing <3 (there’s two teeny tiny snails on top of the rock ornament in case you’re looking for them!)

This is one of these marina betta tanks. Youtube user ShreckKram used it for a praying mantis! I’m not sure how tall the mantis is compared to the enclosure, but generally you want the terrarium to be 3x as tall and 2x as wide as your mantid is at the very least :)

Bugsincyberspace sells a ton of different invertebrate kits as well! These are biobubble deco cubes that are often marketed towards bettas but as yall can see, they’d make a great bumblee millipede terrarium! :D

The Fish Bowl

[Source] Last but not least, we have to talk about what in the heck to do with these classic fish bowls, drum or not. These bowls are basically blank canvases and there are tons of decor ideas floating around on pinterest, but for now I wanted to give yall a few decor ideas and a then show yall some more interesting uses!

These sand bowls are a really cute alternative to live plants and with all the miniatures you can buy on amazon or ebay or at hobby lobby or michaels (or even walmart), there are so many unique themes / scenes you could choose to create. You can also do a little zen garden of sorts with rocks and different colored sand and a miniature rake even!

I don’t personally drink, but I know there are Of Age fishblrs on here, so this is for you! Tipsy Bartender also did a video for this drink!

Of course I had to include a planted terrarium too! Now, when I created a fish bowl succulent terrarium a lot of people said that it wasn’t the best kind of container for succulent since it traps humidity and there’s no drainage (feel free to drill some holes if ya know how to do that tho!). If you’re worried about keeping succulents in a bowl like this, there are tons of mosses and ferns and such that you could use to create a terrarium :) SerpaDesign has a TON of instructional videos for making terrariums!

Another decor idea!

Now, this is similar to something I actually made for my then-boyfriend (now husband) for valentines day a few years ago. I made a little luvdisc aquarium in a dollar store fish bowl (they’re like 16 oz. super small). I used like, glass pebbles and plastic plants and filled it with this fake water stuff and it came out pretty cute! I’m so sorry that I don’t have a picture of it for yall but the concept is fun and you can do the same thing with pretty much any plastic creature you have!

The last idea I have for y’all today involves food. I’m not the best cook, but I do freakin love me some chocolate, so with halloween coming up, you can use that old fish bowl (preferably cleaned. very well.) for a party-size bowl of dirt-and-worms or the summery sandy alternative (for the vanilla or banana pudding lovers out there). This version features some cute little amphibians! And of course I had to include a dinosaur version because of course I do.

Acme Smoked Fish & Fish Fridays

In the heart of industrial Greenpoint, on an unremarkable street, behind an unmarked door, lies the largest smoked fish processor in the country: Acme Smoked Fish (30 Gem Street). And every Friday, and only Friday, from 8am until 1pm, you can take advantage of one of the neighborhood’s best (and worst kept) secrets when Acme opens its doors to the public for “Fish Friday.”

Finding Acme is a bit like entering a prohibition-era speakeasy, but no password or secret handshake is required. Before entering the warehouse (and even after entering) you may question if you’re in the right place, but trust me, it’s very right. Many first time visitors (including myself) walk past the entrance, only to find themselves doubling back after consulting their phones. However, more often than not, a queue stretches onto the sidewalk (especially during the holidays), clearly highlighting the proper doorway. You’ll know you’re on the right track when you see people strolling down the desolate street carrying shopping bags overflowing with smoked fish.

You’re probably wondering why you should bother with Fish Fridays. For starters, it’s cheap. Far cheaper than you’ll find at any grocery store. For example, on Fish Fridays you can buy gravlax for $18/pound. By comparison, the new Whole Foods that recently opened on Bedford (and also carries Acme’s gravlax, among other things) charges $8.99/quarter pound (though I did see them mark it down to $5.99 during their opening week). Similarly, Frankel’s Delicatessen, who also source their smoked fish from Acme, charge $20/half-pound—double what you’ll pay at Fish Fridays. That’s considerable savings. Same goes for everything on the menu. The second reason is because there are some special offerings that can’t be purchased anywhere else, like “Gary’s Special” or beet-cured salmon (more on those below). Beyond that, this is New York, and everyone has a guy for everything, make Acme your smoked fish guy.

History

Like many companies who adopt the “acme” moniker, Acme’s founder, Harry Brownstein, chose the name because of its double duty. Stemming from the Greek “akme” meaning “highest point” or “the point at which something or someone is best, perfect, or most successful,” the word instantly/presciently branded Brownstein’s company as a leader in the industry. Also, at the time of its incorporation, in 1954, a name starting with “ac” was almost guaranteed to appear first in the phonebook—today’s equivalent of showing up on the first page of a Google search. (note: a phonebook was an annual publication listing the phone numbers and addresses of residents and businesses, in alphabetical order.)

The history of Acme Smoked Fish (which is well-documented on their website) is as classic as its products. Like many New York institutions, Acme’s humble beginnings started out of a horse-drawn wagon in 1905. 111 years later, now in its 4th generation as a family-owned and operated business, Acme continues to flourish, expanding its product line and reach. If you’ve had smoked salmon recently, even outside of New York, there’s a good chance it originated here.

Process

Out of their Gem Street production facility, Acme processes a staggering amount of fish on a daily basis—upwards of 24,000 pounds. Per. Day. Annual production is approaching 10 million pounds, making them the largest smoked fish processor in the country

My host for the afternoon, General Manager, Richard “Richie” Schiff, outfitted me for the tour (lab coat, hair net, and industrial strength rubber boots) and we made our way into the belly of the beast. As you can imagine, dealing with so much raw meat could be a health code nightmare, but Acme’s strict operating procedures from start to finish minimize any potential risks. One thing you notice immediately: for a place that deals with so much fish, it doesn’t smell like fish. Well, it smells a little like smoked fish, but it doesn’t smell like raw fish.

The first stop was a room filled with bins of fresh whole salmon, where a team of cutters skillfully and masterfully gutted and cleaned each massive fish. The messiest part of the job, descaling, is completely automated and done in an enclosed machine by high pressure water jets. Some fish are filleted, while others (primarily whitefish) are smoked whole.

From there we moved on to a room full of fish being brined in massive bins. The composition of the brine and the brining time vary depending on the type of fish and the desired finished product, but, in general, it’s a mixture of water, salt, and sugar.

Next stop: the smokers. On the day I visited they weren’t smoking anything, which allowed access to the apartment-sized smokers. Surprisingly, all of the smoke is created by a machine about the size of a keg.

The final stage is portioning and packaging. Whenever I see a packaging room, I can’t help but think of the “I Love Lucy” episode, where Lucy’s working the line in a candy manufacturer. Unlike that scene, Acme’s process is well-oiled, and though there are many moving parts, it’s like an orchestra with everyone playing a critical role in the finished product. One of the more fascinating bits of machinery was the device responsible for the paper-thin slices of fish in every package—a conveyor belt slowly inches each fillet forward, where a razor sharp, oscillating, serrated blade glides through each fillet with laser-like precision.

From there it’s immediately sent to distributors around the country, for although it’s cured, smoked, and vacuum-packed, it’s still basically a fresh product, with an expiration date. The entire process, with the exception of some products that require a longer cure, takes just a few days, allowing Acme to get the freshest product available to its customers. The only way to get it any fresher is to make it yourself (for which they offer DIY gravlax kits).

Over the years, the selection has changed a bit. Acme now operates as a Kosher facility, so no shellfish or bottom-feeders (though they do carry eel, which they import from Europe). To this day Richie still wistfully reminisces about the giant, smoked shrimp.

Helpful Definitions:

Lox: Traditionally lox was only made with the belly of the salmon, but now other cuts are used as well. Lox is salt-cured, creating a texture that is silky, rich, a bit translucent, and… salty. It is not smoked.

Nova/Nova Salmon/Nova Lox: Traditionally made from salmon originating from Nova Scotia, Nova now refers more to the process rather than the origin (as there is also “Western Nova” that originates from the Pacific). While also brined like traditional lox, it is typically less salty and is also cold-smoked (more on that later).

Gravlax: Traditionally gravlax was made by salting salmon and lightly fermenting it by burying it, literally, in the sand above the high-tide line (gravlax, the word, originates from the Scandinavian word grava, meaning “to dig”). Thankfully, the fermentation is no longer part of the process and the salmon is simply buried and cured under a thick layer of salt, sugar, and dill. Acme also sells kits for making your own gravlax at home.

Kippered: Refers to a process of brining and then hot-smoking (or baking) the fish. The end result is cooked through but retains a moist and flaky texture, and more pronounced smokiness.

Royal Cut: This simply refers to a thicker cut of salmon (closer to ¼ inch, as opposed to the super thin slices of lox, gravlax, and most others) taken from the belly of the salmon.

Sable: Another term for Black Cod, Sable is oily and subsequently more “fishy” tasting than some other fish. Thankfully, the smoking process mellows most of the fishiness and what you’re left with is an incredibly rich piece of smoked fish. At $25/pound, it’s the most expensive thing on the menu at Fish Fridays, and well worth the splurge if you’re looking for something different and luxurious.

Whitefish: The term “whitefish” is usually used to loosely describe various white-fleshed fish, but true whitefish is a freshwater species related to trout and abundant in the Great Lakes. It has a particularly sweet, moist, delicate flesh and is a favorite for smoking. In Acme’s case, it’s most of the options in the “Specialty Smoked” section of their menu.

Cold-Smoked: Cold-smoked salmon is traditionally wet or dry brined before being smoked at lower than 80 degrees (F). Because the salmon doesn’t get cooked, the flesh retains most of its moisture as well as the characteristic translucent pink color.

Hot-Smoked: Usually smoked between 130-140 degrees (F), hot-smoking results in a more cooked texture and appearance, and greater smoke flavor. In the Pacific Northwest, this is often taken a step further to create “Salmon Jerky” or “Salmon Candy,” where the fish is heavily smoked, and often glazed, resulting in a product is both drier and sweeter than other preparations.

Tips:

Don’t be afraid to ask for samples, within reason.

The beet-cured salmon doesn’t taste like beets, but it looks amazing. It was developed for Black Seed Bagels, but they occasionally sell it at Fish Fridays. Worth getting for the color alone.

Get “Gary’s Special” if it’s available. The offering varies from week to week, but it’s generally a poke-like mix of smoked salmon mixed with other ingredients (on one occasion it was a Thai-inspired mix of ginger and peppers, while another week paired the salmon with avocado and mango).

There are two kinds of Pastrami Salmon available, one the “house” recipe and the other developed by celebrity chef David Burke. The original recipe uses more traditional spices, while the David Burke style is both sweeter and hotter. Both are delicious, so order a little of each.

Like many places in New York, it’s CASH ONLY, and things can add up quickly. Plan accordingly.

How many cameras do I need?

The number of outdoor security cameras you need depends on a few things, including how much area you want to cover and the field of view provided by the camera. If you have multiple access points you want to keep an eye on, like the front porch, the garage, and the backyard, you’ll probably need a camera for each of those locations. And, depending on both the size of your yard and the wide-angle view of the camera, you could need multiple cameras to cover the whole area.

How do I know if a camera is weatherproof?

An outdoor security camera needs to be able to take a beating, and the best way to tell if your camera can withstand the whims of Mother Nature is to check out the IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The first number in an IP rating shows how difficult it is for things like dust and water to enter the camera enclosure. The second number shows how tamper-proof the enclosure is. Making A New House Our New Home

So I’m finally getting around to sharing some photos of our new home and our remodel projects with you. I’ve been meaning to do this for a month, but life has been so hectic and crazy lately that I haven’t found time to do it.

If you don’t already know, we recently purchased our “forever home,” and we’re undertaking the massive task of making this new house our new home. We had the entire month of October to stay in a friend’s home while she was out of the country. This gave us a good bit of time to tackle some of the larger remodeling projects on our list, such as moving a wall, painting everything (except the bathrooms and closets) including the kitchen cabinets, and replacing the whole house carpet with hardwood.

Now, before I share photos, can I just say that all this DIY remodeling business isn’t as easy as it looks on HGTV. Holy cow! Every single step of this process has been harder and taken longer than we originally thought! We have run into trouble with each project, but after a month and a half, we are almost finished—with the big projects, at least!

Carpet & Laminate Removal

Okay, so our first project was to pull all the carpet and laminate flooring out of the house. Those things have been there since the house was built in 1998, and they were old and nasty! The boys helped Dean remove all the trim and pull the carpet and padding out, and then we all pulled carpet staples and strips for days!

Moving A Wall

After the carpets were removed, Dean decided to move a wall further back to make our dining room larger while making the laundry room smaller. With six people in the house, I’d rather have more room to sit and eat comfortably in a beautiful space than have lots of room for laundry.

I hate laundry anyway, and I try to do the least amount possible. This means that each kid washes, drys, and puts away their own laundry (except for the littlest guy as I help him with his laundry) so I don’t have to do it. All this means we don’t need a huge laundry room. Not only that, but I’m not planning on folding or sorting laundry in there, nor do I need to store a lot of things in that space.

Below you’ll see a before and after of the wall that was removed and replaced further back.

During this wall project, Dean also tore out the laminate flooring in the kitchen and bathrooms because I wanted all the new hardwood floors to be smooth with no thresholds or raises. Now, my husband sure must love me because this project was a beast, but he did it anyway. The laminate was glued onto a thin sheet of some type of wood which was also glued and nailed down to the subfloor. It took forever to get it out and get the glue ground off the floor in preparation for the new floors! You can see the new floors in the photo above, but I’ll also share a bit more about them below and tell you why they have all those black marks on them.

Painting The Whole House

The first of my remodel projects was to choose paint colors and start painting the walls. Now let me tell you, I was dreading this part. I’m a very neutral person, at least when it comes to my taste in home and car colors—not so much with my clothes though, but that’s a whole other topic. Our house on the mountain had white walls and dark trim which fit its rustic mountain cottage vibe, and I’ve always owned cars that are either black or white. I’m not sure why that is. I think those just feel like safe colors to me and since painting a whole house and buying a car are such big things, I guess I just tend to go the safest route. I don’t really know. Psychoanalyze me if you wish. Just tell me what you find out. I do enjoy getting to know myself better, quirks and all.

Anyway, I wanted this house to have an old-world European cottage vibe, and while some of those houses are neutral in color, many of them have a lot of color inside. Someone once told me that in old-world Europe, having color on your walls (or wallpaper) was a sign of wealth. I’m not sure how true that is, but I did know I wanted this house to feel a bit warmer, color-wise, than our last house, so we were going to put some color on our walls.

I chose to go with Valspar paint from Lowe’s. Valspar now has a super low to no-VOC paint, but because I needed something that had some stain resistance (hello, four boys and animals!), I went with the low-VOC option. The paint smell was not that bad, and it only lasted for the three hours or so that it took the paint to dry.

I first decided to paint the majority of the walls a cream color and to paint all the doors, trim, and wainscoting white. This was a huge mistake, the wainscoting, that is. It looked awful! So, I decided to be a bit more daring and went back to Lowe’s to purchase some actual color. Some rooms would have blue-colored wainscoting and other rooms would have green-colored. The idea was to go with an analogous color scheme with blues, greens, and yellows throughout the house. So I found a blue and green color online that paired well nicely with each other and sent Dean to purchase it. I then proceeded to paint it in all the appropriate places throughout the house. Again, it was awful. Our old-world European style cottage looked more like a beach cottage!

As you can see, this was no good. This time, I enlisted the help of a friend who found an English country cottage color palette with blues and greens online. I then took that to Lowe’s myself and matched paint colors up to that. Finally, the wainscotting looked like a European cottage! I also decided to paint the kitchen and dining room with this golden yellow color so the white cabinets would stand out a bit more. You can see this color on the walls in some of the photos throughout this post.

Installing Hardwood Floors

After the walls and ceilings were painted and the new wall was in place, Dean started putting flooring down with his dad. We bought some engineered hardwood flooring that hadn’t been finished on the cheap from a flooring company that went out of business in South Carolina for .23 cents a square foot! It was such a good deal we couldn’t pass it up. I mean, we have a lot of floor space to cover in this house and a lot of projects on our list, so we were all about saving money where we could. We ended up buying 5 palettes of it. This will give us quite a bit of leftover wood, which I’ll use when we convert the garage into my new office space and when we build my she-shed. Well, not really a she-shed. It’s more of a tiny house/she-shed combo. LOL!

Because the wood isn’t fully finished, it has these black paint stains on them. This paint is used to seal cracks and knots in the wood to keep them from cracking worse or the knot falling out. It also keeps any resins from leaking through as well. It looks a bit scary, but it easily sands off. In fact, you’d never know it was there to begin with after finishing the wood! We tested it before flooring the whole house just to make sure!

Anyway, we thought putting the flooring down would be quick and easy, but like most of the other projects we’ve undertaken during this remodel, it wasn’t that easy. There were so many cuts to make and doorways to navigate around that it slowed the process way down. Once the floors are finally down (we are finishing them tonight!), we will sand them, stain them a dark-colored walnut stain, and seal them.

We’re not sure what type of sealer we’re going to use. A standard polyurethane will last the longest and be the most water-resistant, but it also takes longer to dry. Not to mention, it stinks to high heaven! We’re looking into some low-VOC water-based sealers. They’re considerably more expensive, but they dry quicker. We’ve found some good options. We just have to make a decision as we get closer to that step.

Cabinet Transformations

Once I finally had the wall color where I wanted it, I moved on to the cabinets. As the chief decorator on this home remodel project, I decided to take our custom maple cabinets and paint them white. Again, my husband thought I was crazy to paint over these beautiful cabinets that had nothing wrong with them, but alas, I like white cabinets so that’s what we went with.

To save time not having to sand the old finish off, we decided to use Rustoleum’s Cabinet Transformations. Basically, you do a simple deglossing of the cabinets with some liquid chemical, although this isn’t as toxic as the hard-core stripping chemicals that are sometimes needed to remove the finish off of wood. This deglossing preps the cabinets for painting, glazing if you choose, and sealing with a protective coating. We read a lot of blog posts from DIY bloggers who raved about the ease of this product and how great it worked. So we went for it.

While using Cabinet Transformation was probably easier than sanding or stripping and then painting and sealing, this project took FOREVER! In fact, I’m still finishing up the last of the cabinets. Maybe it was due to the fact that we had a lot of cabinets to do. Maybe it was because we ended up having to do more than the suggested two coats of paint (it took almost four complete coats to thoroughly cover the wood!) on all the cabinets. Maybe it was because of the wait times between each step. Who knows. All I know is that after 5 kits of this stuff, I sure hope it holds up as far as stain and scratch resistance! We’ve already got some scratches on it, but it hasn’t fully cured yet. Plus, I have enough leftover paint and protective topcoat to do little touch-ups here and there, so that’s a relief.

Almost Finished

At this point, we are 6 weeks into our remodel, and we’re almost finished. I have a handful of cabinet shelves to paint, and we have the flooring to finish. We also have our new appliances to order, light switch and light socket covers to replace, and a few more lights to install in rooms, but we’re getting there. And yes, we have had some “disagreements” along the way, but Dean and I still love each other. LOL!

We had to move out of our October Home at the beginning of November, so we’re sleeping here in the new house until we’re ready to finish the floors. At that point, we’ll move out and into a friend’s Airbnb rental for a week, finish the floors, and then move into the house for real. As in, unpack the boxes, bring in the furniture, and hand the photos on the walls, move in. I’m so ready!

Yes, we definitely have some big projects planned like bathroom remodels, installing a wood stove in the living room, and creating an entertaining area on the outdoor patio, but those things will come after these initial projects are complete. Wish us luck!

10 Reasons You Need a Dodge Scat Pack 1320…

Dodge just built an 11-second race car with a warranty. Here’s why this changes everything.

Vehicle manufacturers have learned in recent years that paying attention to the needs of niche customers pays off with handsome dividends. That goes not just for bleeding-edge electrics and hybrids but also performance machinery. Customers respond to cars like the Chevy Camaro ZL1, Dodge SRT Demon, and Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 by signing on the dotted line for a $700-, $800-, or even $1,000-a-month car payment, sometimes for as long as eight years. At the end of the month, you’ve either got that kind of cash sitting around or you don’t.

Some will claim that the price of a nicely equipped 2019 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack 1320—at $46,876 for the one we tested—is too high to be considered affordable, but here’s a reality check: the price of a brand-new, loaded 2019 Volkswagen Passat (pretty much the most boring new car anywhere) is $36,406. Reality check number two: new cars are expensive, even when they’re sleep-inducing appliances. (After adding the mandatory eight-speed automatic transmission, the cost of the 1320 package is just $3,995 over the cost of a standard R/T Scat Pack Challenger.)

Our tester for the day was this TorRed 2019 Dodge Scat Pack 1320, which Dodge claims an 11.7 quarter-mile e.t. at around 115 mph. We were able to review all the 1320’s drag-specific hardware and software on the track, but the timers were not set up. Performance pages recorded our best eighth-mile e.t.’s around 7.5 seconds during back-to-back hot laps.

But framing Dodge’s new gem as some sort of low-cost alternative to the terrifyingly quick Demon doesn’t do enough justice to the Scat Pack 1320. This rare kind of car is what happens when the right group of engineers, designers, and brass meet in a crystal-clear moment of clarity and do the right thing. Recognizing how its customers were using and modifying Hemi Challengers, Dodge took stock of the SRT parts bin, sharpened some pencils, and got to work shaping a car that will have far-reaching consequences for hot rodders for decades to come. In few words, what they came up with is essentially an SRT Demon, but without the 840hp Hemi. Though the 1320 was announced last July, limited availability in the press fleet forced us to hold off on our evaluation until now. Let’s take a look at the 10 reasons you’d be wise to buy a Scat Pack 1320…

Introducing Nexen’s first-ever drag radial tire: the SUR4G 275/40R20. The design and compound of this DOT-legal drag radial has been specifically tuned for the Scat Pack 1320 and is standard equipment.

1. Drag radials on track-spec wheels

If you take drag racing seriously, the first thing you’d do with any race car is find some sticky tires and purpose-built wheels. That typically means hitting the Summit Racing catalog or Tire Rack website and shelling out at least a grand (and for only two rims and tires, at that). The Scat Pack’s 1320 option includes specially developed Nexen SUR4G drag-spec 275/40R20 street-legal tires, which we found to be incredibly effective when we made test runs down the eighth-mile in Pomona. (Without the track’s timing lights on, we produced e.t.’s in the 7.5- to 7.9-second range, with a heat-soaked engine.) These tires are mounted on low-gloss black 20×9.5-inch forged wheels with a knurled bead seat to minimize tire slip when the tire pressure is reduced for competition (around 20 psi). We’ve already ordered a set of these super-sticky Nexen tires to test on our resident Hellcat. Look for a full report at a later date.

Designed to be drag-raced from the factory, this innocuous-looking “Drag” button on the center stack unlocks an arsenal of tools for getting down track posthaste. By our count, Dodge packs more than $5K in drag-specific hardware and software into the 1320, a relative bargain considering the $3,995 asking price of the 1320 package. You couldn’t do the 1320’s mods for less, even if you did the work yourself.

2. Drag mode

Slide behind the wheel of a 1320 Scat Pack, and you’ll think you entered an episode of The Twilight Zone. Down and just to your right is an innocent-looking button called “Drag.” Push it, and you’ve swallowed the proverbial red pill (if we’re allowed to mix cinematic metaphors). “Drag” instantly invokes all the goodies in Dodge’s electronic toolbox, from torque reserve, launch control, and line lock to adaptive drag dampers and transbrake. While technically the combination of several key features, having the button in plain sight with everything under one roof is a huge benefit, especially in the fast-paced world of the burnout box and staging beams.

While the 1320 gets the Scat Pack’s version of the eight-speed TorqueFlite instead of the Demon’s stronger unit, it does get the Demon’s extra torque reserve through a special torque converter and software upgrades. TorqueFlites are built in FCA’s Kokomo, Indiana, transmission plant.

3. Torque reserve/torque converter

Seasoned drag racers know that fast elapsed times aren’t always the product of more power, but better power management. Dodge’s torque reserve rips a page right out of the racer’s handbook with a higher-stall-speed converter and combines it with some clever software integrated into the car’s multiple body modules to launch the car more effectively. Torque reserve works in conjunction with launch control and the transbrake (more on this later) by managing fuel flow and controlling ignition timing to maximize power delivery and launch performance. Taken together, it’s the equivalent of a custom-built torque converter with valvebody mods and significant custom transmission programming. If we had to put a price tag on this with comparable aftermarket parts, software, and labor, it’s easily worth $1,500.

When Dodge realized it could stuff the Demon’s 41-spline halfshafts into the Scat Pack 1320 for way less than its customers could through the aftermarket (and save them warranty headaches!) it was a no-brainer.

4. Demon axles

The Demon’s stronger 41-spline, extreme-duty halfshafts aren’t exactly needed at the 1320’s modest 485hp level; it’s more of a wink-wink, nudge-nudge from the engineers acknowledging that you’re about to bolt on a blower, cam, and heads, and that they don’t want to see you in the service department the next Monday after you’ve snapped an axle. Dodge has, for all intents, given you the most important “bolt-on” you’ll need as your power rises with increasing amounts of nitrous and boost. We put the value on the Demon axle upgrade at around $1,500.

Note how all Scat Packs get the Hellcat hood for 2019, including the 1320. Special low-glare, drag-spec 9.5×20 wheels prevent tire slip on the rim while providing a unique and lightweight style. Suspension tuning on the 1320 is drag spec all the way.

5. Adaptive damping suspension (ADS)

Everybody talks a good game about setting up a stock-style rear suspension for sportsman level bracket racing, as witnessed by the multitudes of adjustable race shocks, coilovers, control arms, and data-logging hardware available to help the racer tune the typical sportsman-level bracket car. This equipment can add up into the thousands of dollars at the blink of an eye. That’s nice if you enjoy a track-side science project, but it’s a science project Dodge has already done for you with the 1320’s ADS.

Like the Demon’s suspension, this system electronically retunes the dampers in Drag mode, setting the front to full soft rebound/full hard compression and the rear to full hard (both compression and rebound). This optimizes weight transfer to the rear, affording the Nexen drag radials the maximum grip possible.

The Scat Pack’s ZF-designed eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic, shown here in a cutaway illustration. The TorqueFlite offered in the Scat Pack 1320 is the 8HP70 version and has a torque capacity of 516 lb-ft (versus the Hellcat and Demon’s 8HP90 model at 663 lb-ft) The 1320’s 8HP70 does have an upgraded converter, torque reserve, and unique drag programming, as does the Demon’s 8HP90.

6. Transbrake

If there’s one feature that’s the poster boy for everything the Scat Pack 1320 stands for, it’s got to be the transbrake. There is no other earthly reason to need it, other than gapping the car in the other lane. That, and getting to the finish line first with “only” 485 hp. How quick is that? Dodge officially says 11.7 seconds at 115 mph in the quarter-mile. Drag racers have relied on transbrake technology for decades to take a huge bite out of e.t.’s, and it works through the diabolically simple principle of locking two gears against one another, then dumping the line pressure to one of the associated fluid circuits. The parts for a typical aftermarket transbrake kit for a simple three-speed automatic run between $400 and $500, not including the labor to install—and there’s a lot of rope to hang yourself if you get it wrong. When used with a sticky tire like the Nexen (transbrake is activated through the steering-mounted paddles), the effect is rather like getting hit in the rear by a Mack truck.

The single-seat interior of the Scat Pack 1320 is Spartan, but is finished out much nicer than a DIY seat delete in a typical street-to-’strip conversion. Passenger seat and rear bench seat can be ordered for $1 each.

7. Low-weight option

It’s nothing to roll your eyes about when Dodge says the 1320 comes standard with just a driver seat. This little favor will save the Scat Pack owner 114 pounds, worth almost a whole tenth of a second in quarter-mile e.t. Not much, you say? See how much you like losing a race by 0.09 second! The important thing to remember is you can buy the rear bench and the front passenger seat for just $1 each. When the seats are removed, the bare areas look far better than an interior with the seats yanked. Anybody with a stripped-down drag car knows the look, and unlike the 1320, it’s not a look that looks good.

The 1320’s suite of drag-specific software is accessed through Dodge’s 8.4-inch uConnect center-stack screen. This datalogging sample from a dragstrip run shows power, torque, gear, and engine speed in “dyno” mode.

8. Launch Assist/launch control/line lock

This group ought to count as three separate features, but are so closely intertwined that we group them together for simplicity. Here’s where Dodge has leveraged its technology know-how to leapfrog beyond what the drag-racing aftermarket offers, figuring that if the hardware is already on the car and the computing power is already there, why not spend a few bucks and put it to work for the most nefarious purpose possible?

The line lock is just as you’d imagine, but with enhancements. In “Drag” mode, hit the “trans brake” button on the uConnect screen, push down on the brake pedal until at least 1,100 psi of brake line pressure shows on the driver display, straighten the steering, hit the “OK” button on the steering wheel, release the brake, and stab the gas. Once clouds of tire smoke billow from the rear, release “OK” and roll out. Burnout complete!

Launch Assist uses wheel-speed sensors to watch for driveline-damaging wheelhop at launch and in milliseconds modifies the engine torque to regain full grip. Launch control prevents tire slip during straight-line acceleration. Once again, the factory borrows its own stability-control sensors, software, and hardware to get this highly specialized job done. You can’t put a price on that, but a quality aftermarket line-lock kit would cost around $400 to install and makes a huge difference in getting consistent, repeatable hard launches.

9. It has a real warranty

Perhaps the biggest mental impediment to owners racing their daily drivers (besides the specter of breakage) is warranty service. Unlike the 1960s, where factory-package cars had disclaimers against racing—or sometimes no warranty at all—the Scat Pack 1320 has a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty that includes running down the dragstrip in unmodified form. Think they’re kidding? Dodge includes a one-year membership to the NHRA or NMCA, as well as membership in Dodge’s 1320 club (DodgeGarage.com)—a Dodge-sponsored online community of Scat Pack, Hellcat, and Demon racers who share performance data, e.t. slips, drag news, and technical information. You can get on the “leader” board, earn decals for achieving certain benchmarks, become an expert, or just brag to all your buddies.

10. An engine worth building

With a healthy 10.9:1 compression ratio, the 6.4L Hemi belts out 485 hp naturally aspirated, but can handle another 200 hp easily with a bolt-on blower kit. The stock block and crank are good for much more than that, but we suggest upgrading the cast pistons to lower-compression forgings with stronger rods to achieve Hellcat-level power.

With the 6.2L supercharged Hellcat and Redeye Hemi engines (717 and 797 hp, respectively) getting all the attention, it’s the naturally aspirated, SRT-tuned 392 Hemi that is the bread and butter of Mopar performance these days. Now in its ninth year of production, the 392ci (6.4L) Hemi puts down 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. If you think of it as a blank canvas for something even greater, you’ve got the right idea: with an indestructible block and a forged steel crank, the 392 is just a piston/rod swap and a blower kit away from Demon territory. Outside of the GM LS-series, no other current late-model V8 is better supported in the aftermarket, making it a great springboard for increasing power gradually over time. Even in unaltered form, an 11.7 e.t. at 115 mph is nothing to sneeze at, a feat that’s easy to forget when the factory is advertising 9s! To put things in perspective, the fastest Hemi cars of the 1960s were only good for 13s off the showroom floor. My, how far we’ve come!

While much different-looking than the production 1320 in 2019, you can see the Drag Pak influence with the steel wheels, Super Stock Hemi hoodscoop, and bold graphics. One could possibly predict future products from FCA’s other Hemi-powered concepts over the past few years, such as the recent widebody Charger Hellcat concept.
