Compilation of Characters Coming Out (to the reader) Part 1
Compilation of how I’ve had my characters confirmed queer, since it is sometimes hard to work it in. Some are actually coming out scenes, but some are ways it’s come up more naturally.
Raymond (Trans)
Raymond took out what I recognized to be a whisper case, took one out, and put it in his mouth before taking a bite of his sandwich. It was how people often took whispers when they needed to regularly (usually vival, for medical reasons), but since I wasn’t sure why he’d be taking it I raised an eyebrow questioningly.
“It’s to up testosterone production,” he said, taking a drink of water.
--
“Well I got them pierced when I was really young— both Mika and I did, and by the time you knew me, I’d transitioned and wasn’t wearing earrings ever. But they haven’t closed, and in the last year I’ve occasionally put studs in.”
--
Although there were a few pictures displayed of them as babies and a few of just Mika, I found a folder where Ariel had hidden away any pictures of Raymond looking feminine as a child, likely hidden away with his coming out.
Leeanne (wlw)
“And,” she said. “Then Kamilla broke up with me.”
That was enough to shock Sam again. And he felt himself freezing up a bit, busy looking at her while he processed it.
Samson (Gay)
“You don’t have to answer, Sam, but are you—”
“No,” Sam said quickly, his mind on magic and his incompetence, and everything that’d lead her to suspect others might catch—
“—gay?”
“Oh, yes—” Sam’s relief that the question was different led him to switch gears in relief before he realized he’d just given up a different secret. “No, wait—” His eyes widened and he dropped his watterbottle in the sink.
Logan (bigender/nonbinary)
I pressed a finger over the sigils I’d gotten tattooed on my collarbone, taking a deep breath to make sure they were charged. One that made sure no one questioned my gender, one that made sure no one questioned my age. They’d both helped me avoid awkward conversations or having to come up with explanations, but sometimes, they couldn’t stop the question from hanging in the air. Like it just had.
--
“Oh, a bit of one. Logan, I know you’ve met Sarah and Cyrene, have you met Cyrene’s son, Kaine? Kaine, this is Logan— they use they/them,” Cassia introduced us.
--
“What are your pronouns?” I asked. As soon as I said it, even though everyone told me it was always best to ask, I got nervous, like maybe I shouldn’t’ve for some reason. But that disappeared quickly, because Logan seemed to light up.
“They/them,” they said, and smiled brightly. “And, bigender, if you’re curious.”
Will/Kaine (bisexual)
[A scene where he kisses Ryan]
--
But even then, I was confident in myself. I knew who I was. I’d even found a label for myself: not gay, bisexual— and I whispered it to myself when I was alone.
--
“Was he your boyfriend?” Ivory asked quietly. Despite everything, my instinct was to deny it, to protect him. But I could now. “Yeah,” I said. Then I remembered our current weird situation. “That’s not why, though, Ivory, I’m bi. You’re too young, you—”
Gene (gay/mlm)
Gene nodded. “Did you—” he started, then stopped, looking down at his hands. He glanced at the door, which he’d closed. When he spoke again, he didn’t look at me, and his voice was quiet. “Did you know?”
“Know?” I thought I knew what he meant but I wasn’t sure.
“Know I was… like you.”
I felt a grin spreading over my face. I couldn’t help it. “Um, I suspected. You are?”
He nodded.
