Psychopath meets psychopath

Between the years 1986 and 1996, a serial killer nicknamed simply as “The Psychopath” took the lives of at least nineteen people in Costa Rica. The murders were linked based on ballistic evidence. In every instance, the bullets were fired with an M3A1 submachine gun, a type of weapon popular during the Nicaraguan armed conflict of the 1980s, which led police to believe the perpetrator was a Nicaraguan guerrilla fighter who entered the country illegally. Most of the victims were couples parked in lonely places at night. He would kill the man with a shot, and savagely torture the woman before killing her too.

But not all killings were the same. The first murders attributed to The Psychopath were those of a woman and six young girls who were returning from a pilgrimage to the Alajuelita Cross. She and the girls took a shortcut through a coffee plantation, where they met their death. Their bodies were left lying face up on the ground in orderly rows.

The Psychopath was never caught. The last murder attributed to him occurred on the 26th of October of 1996.

Then in 1998, the police captured a man suspected in the disappearance of several Nicaraguan expats, all of them men. The suspect was a Costa Rican taxi driver with a deep-seated hatred of Nicaraguans. He frequented bars that were popular as meeting places for Nicaraguan expats, sat with the loneliest Nicaraguan at the bar, put something in his drink to make him drowsy, and offered him a ride home which never made it there. He confessed to his crimes and told the police where he buried the bodies.

When the police went to the homes of the reported missing Nicaraguans to gather samples for body identification, they discovered in the home of one of them—whose body was later identified among the victims—mementos from The Psychopath’s killings. Although The Psychopath case hasn’t been closed God knows why, it’s reasonable (and gratifying) to assume that The Psychopath died at the hands of another serial killer.
