Ooh I love this, gonna use it to flex the writing muscles before I finally get out of bed.
Okay so Carlos is a shift runner who works the till sometimes to help out, and this is absolutely where they meet, with TK in his spiky, everything is grey stage of Austin life. He’s not even planning on talking to the cashier but the line for self checkout is waaay too long and he’s getting antsy in this place already. He’s only here because his dad is on shift and it’s his turn to make dinner for when he’s home, but nothing in the cupboards remotely interests him. He has his AirPods in as a signal that he will nod politely and hand the money over, but Does Not want to talk. Then, of course, he glances up, and finds Carlos already looking at him. He’s very quickly done for. These are the deepest, most beautiful brown eyes he’s ever seen, and Carlos himself is simply gorgeous. He takes out his AirPods and talks as they put through his groceries.
TK will not explain to Owen why he is suddenly so okay with doing the grocery shopping every time — and in person, no less. He tells him it helps him feel better because it gets him out of the house, and Owen stops questioning him so much, but doesn’t stop looking at him in that fond yet suspicious way of his. He knows his boy. He knows something is going on, but it’s a grocery store so he’s satisfied that it’s nothing bad. He even follows TK there one time to make sure that’s really where he’s going 👀 maybe he goes as far as following him inside, spots him talking to the same pleasant, handsome young staff member who’s been so helpful to Owen when he’s needed to ask something, and he picks up on their flirty vibes instantly. Satisfied, he quietly extricates himself from the situation before he can be caught, and decides that he’s comfortable letting TK have this “secret.” It’s a nice, healthy one to have after all, and his son deserves something like that.
TK goes in late one night, so late that, while he’s talking to Carlos, the rest of the staff team all leave one by one. The store isn’t a 24 hour store. It shuts at 10pm, and the cleaning staff don’t come in until midnight. Carlos says he has some tidying up to do in the store room, but that TK’s welcome to join him and keep him company if he doesn’t need to leave in a hurry 👀 He joins him, of course, and Carlos is approximately one and a half sentences into explaining how they organise things in the store room (Carlos has a spreadsheet) before TK makes a point of closing the door behind them. Kissing ensues. Lots of it. TK goes down to his knees 👀
One night, Carlos is feeling a little grouchy. He’s been on a double shift and was hoping that TK might come visit, but he hasn’t, and he hasn’t replied to his last couple of texts today either. When a customer comes to him to report someone — another customer, in the medicines aisle who is clearly fresh out of a fistfight, with bloodied knuckles and a split lip, fresh blood on their face and their t-shirt — Carlos goes to investigate. He’s fully ready to ask the person to leave if they’re disorderly, or to supply numbers of the support lines the staff have on hand for someone who might wander in during some kind of crisis. Sometimes people come here and confide in the cashiers in frightened whispers. It’s good to have the right resources on hand, and Carlos has them memorised. What he’s not expecting to find, is that the only person in the medicine aisle is the very person he’s been longing to see today. TK is a mess, and tells Carlos he’s just here for supplies to get himself cleaned up. Carlos tells him they have first aid kits in the back. He takes his hand — his HAND — and all but drags him through the store and into the staff room. He politely kicks out the two people taking an extra long break in there, and helps patch his sad boy up while TK opens up to him about what’s really going on for him.
At some point, Carlos and TK have a day off together, and they get up out of the city and take a long walk together somewhere more remote. They take a picnic, they get distracted by making out in the tall grass, and further distracted by undoing each other’s belts and getting each other off in the tall grass 👀 They walk a little more, and TK invites Carlos to his place, where Carlos is DELIGHTED by the existence of Buttercup. Carlos agrees to stay for dinner, and they’re both just hanging out in the kitchen, cooking together (TK, at this stage, doesn’t love cooking alone), when Owen walks in. He gives them a knowing look, and a big smile, and tells them he’s got his own hot date tonight so the boys will have the entire house to themselves (as a little bonus, he might embarrass his son completely by happily informing the boys that, if they need condoms, Owen has a healthy supply in his en-suite bathroom and they’re welcome to help themselves).

Joel puts the phone back in his pocket. He’d been obsessively staring at the time on it, in hopes it would make the visiting hours come faster, but if anything, it only made his wait feel longer and heavier.
“Hey Ale, it’s me,” Joel says upon opening the door. “How are you?”
Joel walks over to Aleksi’s bed in long strides, grabs the nearby chair and sits down beside him. He takes him in.
“They didn’t shave your face today,” Joel remarks, stroking Aleksi’s cheek for a moment. “I’ll be right back.”
Joel goes to the bathroom to grab Aleksi’s shaving kit, wetting his razor profusely before coming back. He sits down on his chair again, spreading shaving cream on the lower half of Aleksi’s face.
“I hope you don’t find it too… invasive,” Joel says. “I just think you’d rather have a smooth face… your face is so cute.”
Joel’s bad habit is that, sometimes, he kind of forgets that Aleksi can probably hear him.
Or maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t hate (and takes advantage of) Aleksi not being able to respond. That he can’t react with disgust or dismissal or second hand embarrassment to Joel’s declarations.
“It’s okay, you’ll tell me when you wake up. I’ve seen you with a three day beard in the past but you always shave it eventually, that’s why I think you’d rather have a clean face. Here. Looking gorgeous as ever.”
Setting the kit aside, Joel takes Aleksi’s hand in his.
“The others met up with our new producer - remember how Johnny had to move to the US for some months? That’s why they didn’t come today. We all know you wouldn’t have wanted us to stop working only because you’re… unavailable at the moment. Still, I didn’t wanna skip my visit, hope you don’t mind,” Joel chuckles. “You’ll get sick of me eventually.”
“I miss you, you know,” Joel says after a while. He’s been idly stroking his thumb across the back of Aleksi’s hand. “And I know you’re still here - I just… miss the color of your eyes. Your laughter. Your jokes. Your teasing. Your help inside the band. We no longer know how to be a five piece band, honestly. You’re so important to us, Aleksi…” Joel’s grip on Aleksi’s hand tightens. “To me, mostly. I’m gonna be real with you, I kinda hate myself for not having said anything sooner.”
Joel can feel tears prickle at the back of his eyes, but pushes them back. He can’t risk Aleksi perceiving them. Aleksi will come back. He has to be sure. He has to be strong in front of him.
(How Joonas consoles him on most nights when he allows himself to break down, letting gloomy thoughts and fears of Aleksi never waking up again insinuate in the depths of his brain, is something Aleksi should never know. First, because it’s heartbreaking; second, because Joel really is pathetic drowning in a pool of his own tears on his bathroom floor, which only becomes deeper when Joonas tries to cheer him up by making him hold on to the happy, carefree memories they made together when Aleksi was still awake.)
“I don’t know how accurate it is, but I read on Google that stimulating your five senses might help you wake up… so we’re gonna listen to some music now, if that’s fine by you?” Joel asks, fully aware that Aleksi can’t answer, but knowing in his heart he would never say no to music. He must miss it like crazy. Joel puts one of his AirPods in Aleksi’s ear and one in his own. Follow You by Bring Me The Horizon starts playing.
“This song makes me think of you for many reasons… the Bring Me The Horizon gig was when we first met. And the lyrics… well, they fit how I feel about you,” Joel chuckles. “I would’ve never confessed to you directly. I think I would’ve made you a playlist or something. Obviously. If I ever found the courage to.”
It’s not a movie, so Joel doesn’t expect Aleksi to wake up upon hearing the song (which is probably for the better, Joel muses, considering what he just told him). But he’d be lying if he said he didn’t harbor at least a tiny bit of hope. If music doesn’t wake him up, then what will? A kiss on the lips?
(Joel would eagerly try it out, but he’d rather ask Aleksi for permission first.)
They keep listening to music, Joel’s playlist on shuffle, Aleksi’s hand in Joel’s own. Joel would happily stay like this all day, but he knows he can’t.
The nurse announcing that visiting time is over comes way too soon.

It’s hardly a week later when Joel gets woken up in the middle of the night by his ringing phone. Groaning, not fully comprehending what’s going on, Joel answers the call and puts the phone to his ear.
“Hello?”
“DUDE! Aleksi woke up a few hours ago! His mother called me - we can go visit in the morning - Joel?”
“Fuck visiting in the morning,” Joel tells Joonas on the other end of the line, hopping on one foot as he’s putting his shoe on the other. “You can visit in the morning. I’m going now.”
“They’re not gonna let -”
“Bye.”
And just like that, Joel is out of his apartment and in his car.

“Aleksi! Allu, oh my god.”
“Sir, you can’t just -”
But Joel doesn’t care, doesn’t let the nurse stand in his way.
Aleksi is looking back at him, sitting up on his bed. Joel forgot how blue his eyes were.
Different emotions, overwhelming in number and intensity, instantly fill Joel to the brim, to the point where he’s lightheaded and his legs give in. He falls down on his knees by Aleksi’s bed, face buried in his hands, and he can’t contain his tears.
“You’re awake. I can’t believe this. You’re -”
Aleksi reaches his hand down to grab Joel’s own, in a gesture Joel has repeated many times during the past few weeks.
“Hey,” he tells him, the first word Joel hears him say. Joel lets out another sob. “Won’t you come and hug me?”
Joel lifts his face and there’s a serene smile on Aleksi’s lips. Joel can’t say no to that, so he gets up and complies with his request, hugging maybe a tad bit too tightly.
“I missed you so much, you have no idea,” Joel’s voice trembles. “So, so much.”
“I know, you’ve been telling me quite a lot.”
“So it’s true?” Joel pulls back to look into his eyes, but his hands don’t leave Aleksi’s shoulders. “You could hear me for real?”
“I could,” Aleksi confirms, the smile now almost insolent. Joel blushes, thinking back to all the things he told Aleksi while they were alone and Aleksi couldn’t respond. Fuck, somehow he didn’t think he’d have to deal with the consequences of it. it was just… venting. Pointless rambling. Joel didn’t think Aleksi could actually hear him.
(Or maybe he did.)
“Do you hate me now?” Joel asks, because for some mysterious reason it’s the only sentence his brain supplies.
“No, why would I? I just wonder how it took me falling into a fucking coma for you to confess,” Aleksi laughs. “Am I that scary?”
Joel looks down, blushing even harder. “A bit.”
(You’re so amazing and perfect and how could I even try and tell you all of that while you could reject me, because you were obviously going to reject me, I’m about to be rejected now just watch me, where would I find the courage to look into your ocean eyes and bare my soul, how could -)
“Well, there’s nothing to fear.”
“Sir, you really can’t be in this room right now. Now, please, leave before we have to -” a nurse says, making Joel snap back to a reality bigger than just the space between him and Aleksi.
“Okay, sure, I’m going. Sorry,” Joel says, forcing himself to get up from the bed.
“Guess we’ll have this conversation tomorrow,” Aleksi says, and his sweet smile makes Joel just a tiny bit hopeful. “Oh, and thanks for making me listen to music. I appreciated that immensely … Thanks for everything, actually.”
Joel smiles then. He kisses Aleksi on the forehead before he leaves the hospital.
