Jackie Curtis posing with Scott Asheton, Iggy Pop & Lou Reed at Max’s Kansas City, 1973, as captured by Danny Fields during what could have possibly been the afterparty for the Stooges’ Raw Power gig.
“I am not a boy, not a girl, I am not gay, not straight, I am not a drag queen, not a transsexual – I am just me, Jackie.”
Jackie Curtis was one of the superstars in Andy Warhol’s galaxy, a ‘60s/’70s East Village playwright, poet & genderqueer performer, who died at 38 of a heroin overdose and has been immortalized in Lou Reed’s “Take a Walk on the Wild Side”: “...Jackie is just speeding away / thought she was James Dean for a day / then I guess she had to crash…”.
Jackie’s trashy glam style of DIY ripped clothes covered in glitter along with elements of the Theatre of the Ridiculous, the underground theatre art of that era that she was involved in, were defintely incorporated into the burgeoning NY glam rock scene of the ‘70s and though more than obvious, the influence on Iggy’s voyeuristic & gender-bending performances is often underestimated. In this light, Scott Asheton’s quote that the Stooges scared people off in a different way can take new meaning in terms of blowing up people’s stereotypes on sexuality and gender roles.

Joe had never been one to really listen to the band that this man had been a part of. It just wasn’t his style of music, if he was being completely honest. They were both from the late ‘70s and both of their unique perspectives were the complete opposite. Joe wasn’t really a fan of the whole glam scene in the late seventies. Removing the cigarette from between his lips as he started to talk. The smoke trailing out of his mouth. Extremely confused by this situation, giving a nervous chuckle.
“Ah yeah, well I’ve just never had a chance to actually hear that type of music before.” Saying this into the man’s ear, as they had been in close proximity to each other and packed into The Dog and Duck after one of The Clash shows. Joe could feel the sweat still residing on the back of his neck. “You know, I’m actually kind of surprised to see you here at this afterparty. Are you here with anyone in particular?” the guitarist asked the singer. Placing the cigarette back between his lips and inhaling deeply, before exhaling the smoke through his nostrils. Taking the bottle of Guinness and swigging from it.
