Jiu-Jitsu Newsletter - April 2019
We are now 25% of the way through the year, and statistically with daylight savings coming to an end this weekend, that means that our numbers on the mat will drop. :-(
Do you want to prove me wrong?
With the earlier nights, and the cooler weather, this is when people quit. The energy and drive that one picks up naturally from the summer months isn't as easy to find and the tempation of a quiet night at home in front of the TV is too tempting to ignore.
Therefore you have a choice … stay at home watching the idiot box, and putting on weight, or be at training … talking to people, and trying crush your friends into submission!
The choice is yours … in November when the beach is calling … which will you regret? The sitting at home, or the coming to training?
I challenge you to step up over the next six months and get to training. Once here you'll be get warmed up and then it's the best time to train.
Last night Steve & I got up to date with stripes for those who were here, and we’re going to try and get to everyone else (who turns up) over the next week. By the end of April I'll announce the winter grading date ... if you're a white belt on 4 stripes then you need to attend to test for your blue belt. Kids and teens will also grade on the same day and coach Nico will confirm names when he's back after the world championships.
Speaking of championships & competitions …
It is with a touch of sadness that I announce we will no longer be repping Nova Uniao at local competitions in Australia. To me loyalty is something that is always at the top of the list of my virtues. For over 20 years I repped the red U all over the world and I wanted to remain a one club player for life.
Sadly however, things in Brazil and the USA have changed. My master Andre Pederneiras is no longer involved in the day-to-day running of the team, and even though I know the guys who have taken over his role, and I want to still keep a good relationship with them, it doesn't make financial or logistical sense for us here in Australia.
In Melbourne, Marcelino has registered his own club for AFBJJ comps, and I have just gone and done the same here with us.
Therefore, if you're competing in any comp under the AFBJJ banner, please register under Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

IBJJF: No More No-Gi Competitions For Kids?
If you have a kid who loves no-gi competition, you had better not sign her up for an IBJJF competition.
According to a recent Facebook post from the Australian Federation Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Western Australia, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation will not be hosting any more no-gi competitions for juniors.
To wit:
Dear Instructors and athletes,
Please read the important note regarding Kids No Gi Events.
In line with the accepted International governing body, the IBJJF, the AFBJJ wishes to follow and not allow No Gi categories for Juniors.
The IBJJF believes and the AFBJJ agrees that No Gi at Junior levels is a poor foundation for Jiu Jitsu.
Further after consultation with peak insurance bodies, it was established that liability may be evident in Junior No Gi categories, as the International body does not promote them.
The AFBJJ wishes to fall in line with the IBJJF and not offer nor support No Gi categories for Juniors.
It can be noted that Juvenile categories (they are those for athletes that turn either 16 or 17 in the said competition year) are allowed.
We trust that you understand that this is in the best interests of the children’s development and safety.

AFBJJ Victorian Competition / Worlds prep continues
2012 AFBJJ Victorian Championships -
This past weekend the 2012 Victorians were held in the town that I live in, Melbourne, Australia.
Even though I just got home on Wednesday night 7pm from Abu Dhabi and I was feeling a bit jet lagged when it was time for me to fight on Friday morning there was no way that I would not compete!
At the comp... my first round was a bye and my second opponent could not make it, meaning that I would most likely be facing my long time friend and old training partner Aaron Hughes.
Aaron is a amazing competitor and we had a very fast paced exciting fight. I was able to come out on top with a submission win in the end, even after Az started the match with a big double leg take-down. A huge Thank You to Jason Hill for the pictures and Aaron Depmsey for the video!

Stoked to add the AFBJJ 2012 Victorian State Championships Male Adult -73kg GOLD to my list of titles!
Sushi and I closed out the division - CIA Paulista wins!
Simon "Sushi" fought two hard fights and submitted both of his opponents on the other side of our bracket. Sushi and I were happy to close out the division together as we train and fight each other in the gym everyday!
After I finished competing I put on my referees uniform and refereed some fights. I try my very best to be an excellent referee and always give 100% of my attention to the fighters. In the past I have been the victim of shitty refereeing and it sucks, I never want to have someone walk away from any of the fights I have refereed and think that I was not paying attention or that I did not know the rules properly.
I enjoy being a referee, I find it can be mentally and physically draining standing for hours at a time but I learn a lot of good strategy and get to see what is working in comps firsthand. It really makes it all worthwhile.
As a competitor you need to know the rules of Jiu Jitsu 100% without question. There are videos, downloadable PDF's and live workshops before every major and IBJJF competition. Although they can be time consuming they will only add to your competition knowledge and game. If you compete PLEASE study and know these rules!!
Training for Worlds -
I guess it never stops! Just a few trips in between lots of hard training and competitions. I am back home in Melbourne until the 18th of May before heading back to California to continue training and prep for the IBJJF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS May 31st - June 3rd .
My coach and a few of my teammates will be heading to Cali along with the SUB Apparel PRO Team. Until then we will be training hard, pushing our limits and mentally preparing for the biggest competition of the year!!
