Sở dĩ nó được sử dụng nhiều như vậy là vì hổ phách khiến người dùng phải yêu thích sự quyến rũ và kỳ diệu của nó.    Theo các nhà khoa học, Hổ phách là hóa thạch của nhựa cây đã trải qua hàng triệu năm để hình thành. Đây là một loại nhựa cây thơm lừng hay còn có thể gọi là đá quý hữu cơ này là nhựa cứng của một loại cây đã tuyệt chủng có tên là Pinus Succinifer và một số loại cây khác. Hầu hết tuổi của các loại hổ phách trên toàn thế giới nằm vào khoảng 30 – 90 triệu năm tuổi. Tuy nhiên, loại hổ phách lâu đời nhất có tuổi lên đến 345 triệu năm. Loại nhựa cây đã trong quá trình hóa thạch chưa hoàn chỉnh thì gọi là hổ phách non (copal ). Mùi hương ấm nồng ấy thích hợp với những ngày đầu đông, khi mà vạn vật bắt đầu ngưng đọng và kết tụ bởi không khí lạnh. Hổ phách cũng rất được ưa chuộng ở phương Đông bởi hương thơm có vị chát đậm mùi huyền bí. Hổ phách thường được đặt ở tầng hương cuối, sau khi các vị ngọt hoa quả, mùi cây cỏ, mùi gỗ đã tan trong không khí, thì mùi hổ phách vẫn còn nồng đượm trên da.   Đá hổ phách luôn cho ta cảm giác ấm áp khi chạm vào và mùi hương dễ chịu khi ta ngửi. Hổ phách không những được sử dụng như một món trang sức hay như một hương trong nước hoa, mà nó còn được xem như là một loại thần dược chữa rất nhiều loại bệnh được tin dùng từ xưa cho đến nay. Nhà pha chế nước hoa Adam Gottschalk đã viết về việc bằng cách nào có được hương hổ phách trong nước hoa. Lafayette did not stop for the festivities at Boston that were to celebrate his arrival. He was a very conscientious young man and had a duty to perform. From Marblehead, on the day before the ‘Hermione’ reached Boston, he had informed his 'beloved and respected friend and general’ of his arrival, indicating that he had 'affairs of the utmost importance’ to communicate. He stayed in Boston only long enough to pay his respects to most of the celebrities–John Hancock, William Heath, Samuel Adams, Samuel Cooper, among others–and to send to Vergennes and Adrienne optimistic reports of the conditions that he found.
