fic recs!!

i woke up to being on a couple of fic rec lists and really appreciated it, so i wanted to capitalize on the nice energy and make a list of some of my own favs that i've read recently that i didn't necessarily see on the other lists :D check these out because they have some of the best prose/plots/characterization that i've read in the fandom :] 💜

one soft infested summer (M, 18k+, 3/7 ongoing) by @wheelersboy - this one is perfect for all the highler fans out there! it's got stoner byler of course, a music festival, lots out camping, and some really amazing writing! i started it just for the fun stoner vibes because Why Not, but i'm staying for the beautiful writing and the really complex and delicate relationship mike and will have in this one

Light Sleepers (T, 15k+, 2/6 ongoing) by @helioleti - WillEl-centric fic set during the time gap between the end of s3 and the beginning of s4 that explores their dynamic and their respective problems with mike, all while trying to cope with moving across the country from everything they know. each chapter is meant to reflect a certain stage of grief, which fits so well with all the complicated emotions everyone is going through!

drank my poison all alone (T, 4k, one-shot) by silverluminoqity - mike gets vecna'd and has to face his past self who's ashamed of who he's grown up to be, and my dudes the writing goes SO HARD. by far one of the best mike gets vecna'd fics i've read with such a good take on his character

star eater (T, >1k, one-shot) by @lowlightt - another fic where the writing does not play. honestly if you have a few minutes, READ THIS FIC. it's mostly just a confrontation between will and vecna, but it's so so powerful and impactful. and again, i cannot state it enough: the writing is AMAZING

tell me again (you said yes) (M, 32k, 3/3 complete) by @willow-lark - hey remember when cleradin was like a Thing for a brief second a few months ago? well if you miss those vibes, or if you just like great writing and some of the best weaving of canon into a fantasy au i've ever read, please look no further than this fic (and it's first part, fireball him! (cast protection)). i love this one dearly and enjoyed the wonderful ways Lark wove canon (specifically s1) into such a different setting, plus it was nice to see many of the other characters play a role in the events. beautiful, astounding, heart-wrenching - and did i mention there's an elopement 👀

In Undertow (M, 17k+, 3/6 on-going) by @souverian-are-we - this and one soft infested summer have become my summer byler reads~ when i say i love this fic, i mean you will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands 🥰 we've got estranged byler, jancy engagement with some stoncy going on in the background, and most of the characters still reeling from the consequences of their final battle with the upside down. it's all set at a lake house, which provides some breathtaking/atmospheric writing that this author uses to their advantage. it has some of my favorite scenes i've ever read in fic too, ones that have literally taken my breath away

california show your teeth (T, 77k+, 10/19 on-going) by @fireflywitch - what if the Byers and Hopper families were from Lenora and moved to Hawkins? this fic takes this one simple premise and turns it into one of my favorite fics i've ever had the pleasure of following along with. it essentially functions as a retelling of s1 and s2, gives almost every main character that's been featured in the show thus far a lot of time and space for their own plots, all while culminating into one larger story underneath. i don't think i've read a fic quite like this one in terms of its scope, plotting, and characterization, because there are a lot of moving parts, but this author goes above and beyond. i cannot recommend it enough

all i know is pouring rain (and everything has changed) (T, 3k, one-shot) by @willelfanpage - i think i read this one at the beginning of my workday while i was running some report on my computer and had to go about the rest of my day as if everything was fine ahah :'D seriously though, it's 3k words that pack an emotional punch all while examining will's relationship to rain. the writing is just gorgeous, and it's a character study that i haven't really seen done before, which was quite enjoyable~

Chasing Heartlines by (T, 7k+, 1/2 on-going) @cherryisgone - if you liked Tip-Toeing on Lilypads then may i direct you to its sequel, which features so much pining mike that he might as well be a tree? again, if you like cleradin/fantasy aus, then Cherry my beloved has you covered 💜 it fits so neatly with Lilypads and provides some fun contrast between will and mike~

Touch Me Like You Know Me (M, 15k, 4/4 complete) by @starsarefire824 - this exists in the rare pantheon of fics that actually made me cry. imagine an estranged byler reunion with all the emotions turned up to an eleven, and lots of lingering on lost time and how life sometimes takes us places we never thought we'd go. it's absolutely beautiful and is a classic to me :]

come back to me and forgive everything (T, 78k, 18/18 complete) by @howtobecomeadragon - i saw a lot about this one when it was on-going but am only just now getting around to reading it, and all i can say is why did it take me so long to get to it :') this author does such a good job of writing will and mike's relationship with a lot of nuance and complexity while still managing to make them feel like the teenagers they are. basically, will has to spend every july at lonnie's house in indianapolis, and for this summer in particular, the event is a lot more emotionally impactful for both mike and will. there's lots of emotional depth, the complexities of coming out and/or realizing you're queer, and, at the heart of it, how two friends try to mend things between each other. it's so soft and sweet

that's all i've got for now!! i'm quickly running out of time on my lunch break :'D also haven't been writing as much, but it's been fun to read more and relax a bit. hope you guys enjoy these because they're genuinely some of the best stuff i've had the pleasure to read in a while 💜💜💜

ok buckle up because I'm going to go on a Stargate Atlantis gush so long I'm not going to bother turning it pink

this series is EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN NEEDING ok ok listen yes it has scary monsters and fight scenes and blowing stuff up BUT it also has substantial fluff

we get to see the characters making a home in small ways from a favourite food in the cafeteria to rc car races in an unused hallway

THEY CALL THEMSELVES A FAMILY THATS MY LIFELINE A FOUND FAMILY CALLING THEMSELVES A FAMILY

the words "we can't tear this family apart" in life threatening situations give me life and they are said a bunch of times

the creators hate killing characters off as much as we hate losing them so a lot of mc deaths get "well, actually"d in a way that made sense (such as getting really upset that my fave Carson died only to have his clone be rescued half a season later and be reintegrated into the mc circulation)

and the series finale was AMAZING. spoiler alert skip this paragraph if you don't wanna read details about the finale. it gave a reasonably hefty threat for a finale, but everyone survived (other fave Ronan got well-actually'd and I'm thankful because he's the teddy bear protector and I would've cried) and found a home. atlantis is on earth, the family is together, and it ends with the well-loved all mc's are on a balcony overlooking a beautiful view and saying that theyre each other's home and there are always going to be other adventures. - end finale spoilers -

even the bad guys are personified. you mightve seen my post about Todd, and Todd is The Original Funnyman. this guy has the best sense of humour in the whole show. then there's Michael, and you feel for him. the replicators... uhh... yeah most of the replicators are unremarkable personality-wise, but hey they're robots.

now for mc's. this is a no-rodney mckay-hate blog, so if you say anything hateful about him I'll stab u. yes he's arrogant and a know-it-all and he thinks he's better than everyone and has the social skills of a stale cracker BUT he has GROWTH and is slowly RECOGNIZING AND TRYING TO TREAT PEOPLE BETTER and he's My Boi so fite me 9/10

Sheppard is hilarious and is responsible for the awful placeholder names for individual wraith. he has serious Burnt Out Gifted Kid Vibes and is definitely smarter than he lets on. atlantis crew is definitely the first Family he's had and feels safe with. I love him 11/10

Teyla is awesome and would absolutely kill for her adopted earth family. also turns out to be Best Mum 10/10

Ronan. my beloved puppy Ronan. played by the absolute unit that is Jason mamoa. he is a man of few words and many guns. atlantis crew saved him and he's the last of his people and now the base is His Home. Sheppard calls him "chewie" affectionately and Ronan smiles every time. 20/10 I would absolutely feel safe with him around

Dr Carson beckett. a Scotsman who will even try to heal his enemies. besties with Rodney McKay and keeps him in check. he's so lovable and sweet 11/10 his clone goes away for the Pegasus galaxy version of doctors without borders 9/10 I'm just glad he's back

Radek zelenka. his most common subtitle is [mutters in Czech] he's so soft and squishy I love him. he shares a braincell with Rodney and they finish each other's sentences it's like they're very competitive twins 10/10

Elizabeth weir. not quite the Mum but definitely the Older Sister In Charge. I miss you so much. rip 11/10

there are a lot more that I love but I'm just gonna leave it here. you should absolutely go watch it.

Gotta Be Somebody

Pairing: Mason x Gemma McKenzie

Warning: None? Slightly angsty

Summary: All my detectives have a habit of singing to themselves and literally every time I listen to music now I always imagine scenarios it could play into. Taking place sometime after that scene from the book 3 demo.

Gemma sits surrounded by the books Nate loaned her, trying to learn all she can on the Supernatural. She rubs at the jagged scar on her neck, absorbing as much information as she could so next time she was prepared. Better. With the new threat looming, she needs to know she won’t be completely helpless.

Sure, she can hold her own in a fight and reads people well, but what use is that if she doesn’t understand what she’s fighting against? As much as they try, the Unit Bravo can’t always be around to protect her, he wont always be around. He’s made that perfectly clear. What if there’s another type of supernatural that can travel through mirrors, or hell, teleport?

She decides it’s time for a break around the three hour mark, when the words start blurring together and she finds herself reading the same paragraph over and over but still not comprehending what she’s reading. She bundles her red hair into a bun as she sits up, lightly groaning as her stiff limbs protest having been in the same position for nearly the entire three hours. She puts in her headphones, putting her playlist on shuffle with the sound on low while she tidies up, and like always, mumbles the lyrics.

This time I wonder what it feels like

To find the one in this life

The one we all dream of

But dreams just aren't enough

So I'll be waiting for the real thing

I'll know it by the feeling

The moment when we're meeting

Will play out like a scene straight off the silver screen

So I'll be holdin' my breath

Right up to the end

Until that moment when

I find the one that I'll spend forever with

Grabbing the stack of books she’s already finished, she heads down the hall to return them. She begins to mumble quieter, not wanting to disturb the agents on the off chance any of them were asleep but still not able to just listen.

‘Cause nobody wants to be the last one there.

'Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares.

Someone to love with my life in their hands.

There's gotta be somebody for me like that.

'Cause nobody wants to go it on their own

And everyone wants to know they're not alone.

Somebody else that feels the same somewhere.

There's gotta be somebody for me out there

Mason sits on the rooftop, fiddling with his unlit cigarette enjoying the peace and quiet. Well, almost quiet. With the detective there, he can never seem to find complete silence. He always hears her, always senses her. Like now, even though she’s obviously trying to keep her singing to a minimum he still hears her. He doesn’t know why she does it, but she’s always singing. He also doesn’t know when he stopped minding. But it doesn’t bother him, not anymore and not as much as it would if it were someone else. Huh.

You can't give up

When you're lookin' for a diamond in the rough

Because you never know when it shows up

Make sure you're holdin' on

'Cause it could be the one, the one you're waiting on

Despite the singing getting louder, likely because she’s getting closer, he finds himself more at peace, everything around him dulling until all he hears is her. Her mumbling, her footsteps. Her heartbeat.

He’s heard her sing this before, in the car, around the warehouse, everywhere. She mixes it up a lot but this is one shes sing to a lot. Curious why, he begins to listen closer, focusing on the lyrics instead of her heartbeat.

‘Cause nobody wants to be the last one there.

And everyone wants to feel like someone cares.

Someone to love with my life in their hands.

There's gotta be somebody for me.

Yeah, me, he scoffs. His brow furrowed as a frown forms, confused by the intrusive thought. Confused on a lot of things. Nate’s knowing smiles every time he observes a moment between him and the detective, but never elaborating. Confused on the something else that lingers between them. Confused why he regrets the way their last conversation ended. Annoyingly confused on why he’s bothered that she’s here, at the warehouse, and avoiding him.

Clutching his cigarette and frowning deeper, he decides he’s done listening and hops off the roof, needing to put some more space between them, enough that he can’t hear her ridiculous songs anymore tonight. Groaning at himself and taking faster strides when he finds himself not wanting to get farther away, tensing and reaching for his lighter when everything else start slinking back in. Finally taking an inhale, he turns back, looking down at the ground as he walks back, the cigarette calming him enough.

The detective hears a thud as the song comes to an end, reaching for her phone to pause it and she looks around the hall. Seeing movement through the window, she moves closer to see what it was. Down below, with the help of the moonlight, she can just make out his figure. She watches him walk away and then start moving faster, her forehead crinkling with worry. unable to bring herself to look away.

She adjusts the stacks of books, propping them against one hip so she can stand more comfortably when he stops walking.

Her heart stops when he turns back, relieved that he’s looking down. She knows she should stop watching, especially with how their last conversation ended, and just continue down the hall. But she can’t. She can’t ever seem to help herself when it comes to him.

She’s about to walk away after a few moments, but freezes and chokes on a breath when he looks up. That undeniable thrill running through her body despite the hurt.

They lock eyes, both of them frozen in their tracks. Mason with his cigarette halfway to his mouth, Gemma midturn from the window.

He moves first, bringing the cigarette to his lips and inhaling but not breaking eye contact. As he exhales, she hurries away.

Waving the cloud of smoke out of his face, he frowns again to find she’s gone. Snuffing out the cigarette butt, he growls to himself as he stomps back towards the warehouse. Obviously walking away doesn’t help, but maybe a match against Adam will.
