Painted Brick Cottage

Hello, my friends! How are you today? I certainly hope this brick cottage brings you some joy!

Recently built by Gerrard Builders Hillside House and with interiors by Shannon Bowman Interiors and Carolina Design Associates, this cottage is truly a dream home! In my opinion, it is the perfect size and features interiors and an exterior that will overcome any trends. You can look at this home in ten years and you will think it was just designed.

Here, the interior designer Shannon Bowman, whom I am very thankful for for sharing all the sources below, explains more about the style of this home: “Cozy and Cottage Chic was our goal, however keeping a light and airy pallet almost gives it a coastal vibe. We wanted to keep the charm of the original architecture and blend it with a newer farmhouse/cottage design.”

Kitchen

“The kitchen cabinets were built by Hardwood Creations in Charlotte, NC. They are paint grade flush inset frames with a recessed panel cabinet doors. The door style includes an interior bead for interest and detail. The smaller top drawers have an outer bead on a slab drawer front to keep the style consistent. We added a decorative and profiled light rail at the base of the upper cabinets to add one more layer of dimension and help hide the under-cabinet lights. The cabinet hood matches the profile of the cabinet doors in one large recessed panel and includes beaded/cove moldings below to create a low-profile mantel design. The cove corbels that attach the hood to the wall are 3” wide and line up with the overall frame of the hood above. The cabinet base includes a furniture style “proud” base with a decorative cove valance cut out.” – Shannon Bowman.

The countertops are Calacatta Florence marble from In-Style. The perimeter countertops are 3cm thickness with an eased edge and the Island is a 2.5” thickness with a Dupont Laminated Edge. All marble tops included the Dupont 15 year sealer to help prevent staining. The backsplash is Roman White Rhombus marble mosaic in the Polished finish from In-Style.

Ceiling Treatment

“The ceiling design creates two large diamonds set into a soffit with perpendicular beams meeting in each corner. We lined the entire ceiling in 6” ship-lap with a nickel gap. The craftsmanship was very important here, we wanted to line up the shiplap with the ceiling and the soffit so it created a seamless look. The beams are 4” high x 6” wide and include a small bead in the interior edges to connect the beam to the shiplap ceiling and create one more detail.”

Farmhouse

All white farmhouse kitchens are a thing of the past, replaced by rich and wooden tones.

Latest Design Trends in Hardware: 8 Inspiring Mood Boards

Last year, we revealed mood boards based on new decor trends in hardware tones and finishes and how they’re combined to create specific styles—check out how we’ve styled latest trends in hardware finishes, tile and paint to complete finished looks you can apply anywhere in your home.

The knobs, handles, drawer pulls in a room–often an overlooked and last touch in a renovation—can pull the entire look of a room together if done right. And, replacing your hardware is an easy way to freshen up the look of your kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or can even boost your curb appeal.

Read on to find paint colors, tile selections and even house numbers, too, for each new trend and how to apply these design tips throughout your home, inside or out.

Soft and Organic

We mixed the warm undertones of champagne with the cool tones of antique brass and brushed nickel to create soft and organic vibes. These metals are balances with earthy decor pieces and a muted color pallet so that one metal doesn’t dominate the other. The soft forms and shapes of the hardware stay consistent with angles, edges and lines, which is accentuated by the floral patterns in the linen. Consider adding organic decor and accent pieces, and splashes of color with fresh greenery to tie this look together.

Friday Favorites: Reader Features and Signs of Spring

It’s time for another Friday Favorites and Remodelaholics Anonymous! We love seeing your awesome projects, and we have some fun things in the works for future Fridays.. so stay tuned and keep DIYing, Remodelaholics! This week we have some great reader features for you (including some really awesome barn door window coverings) plus some beautiful signs of spring… is spring showing where you are? I saw this on Facebook and it describes our weather lately PERFECTLY, plus it made me laugh.

Favorite before and after: This laundry room renovation by Timeless Creations is a testament to the power of a few boards and a bit of paint! And did you notice that they kept the same super-functional but NOT cute utility sink and dressed it up? I love rocking what ya got!

Favorite white kitchen: I know there are mixed feelings about white kitchens, but I personally am a big fan — and yes, I have had a white kitchen before and @househaven‘s kitchen has me ready to create a white kitchen again!

Favorite hearth: A fireplace update (like these) can make a huge difference… but it’s usually also a BIG job. This concrete hearth tweak by Single Girls DIY updated their fireplace without requiring a sledgehammer or a huge budget.

Favorite barn doors: Our reader Denise sent in these photos of her barn door window coverings — don’t the look amazing! (See more barn door ideas here and affordable barn door hardware here.)

From Denise: “These indoor sliding barn door shutters are something I tried to purchase for a year . Online shutter companies show them in their products now however they don’t have them when you call. 40 years ago in my 20s I built similar shutters fir my family room. When I moved I figured my building days were done and I’d sold all my tools. It took a year to find Keith Denig who is a wood artist. He was excited about the project.

This barn door hardware kit came with everything necessary. I saved 100$each purchasing them online. I found for my home I needed to purchase longer bolts because if the way the headers we’re built above my windows. I purchased HeadLOK wood screws that were 6″ long. They came with the necessary bit. It was necessary to drill extra holes in the bar because my studs are 20 inches apart. It was not difficult to drill through the bar at all. Putting the bars up was not difficult and we got extra support by putting them into the studs. Otherwise your doors will come crashing down. The rollers must be attached toward the center of the shutters enough so they don’t hit each other at the top. Otherwise you will have a gap between the shutters. Something we did and had to fix. don’t do this. Just move the rollers more to the center a little to avoid it.

I had a friend named Keith Denig who is a wood God. I showed him some drawings and photos of what I wanted the shutter doors to look like. His garage is a wood workers wonderland.He used alder wood on the framing and since I was going to paint the shutters he used pine for the center portion. The shutters overhang the windows by 2 inches on each side. I wanted to block out as much sun as possible.

The long doors I purchased at an overstock supply house for 78$ each. They are two different sizes because I wanted to open only one side and leave the other stationary. The backside is covered with pine boards that Keith ripped, planed,and sanded. The back or Street side is painted white to reflect as much possible heat away from the inside of the home.

The inside portion is painted a blue color (Behr English Channel) that really warmed the room up. I debated about staining vs painting and was pleased with my choice if paint. It took 1/2gallon of paint of each color to complete the project. There are 3 coats on each side.The entire project was around 700$ for all the windows they can be done for less with old barn wood or even wood from pallets. I ordered hardware handles online for 6$ for 10. I haven’t get decided if I want to put them on yet or not. I’m so pleased with the way these turned out. “

Favorite sign of spring: It snowed here AGAIN this week. I know it’s only mid-March, but after a warm winter, we’ve gotten late snow, then beautiful spring weather, and then back to typical “spring” weather — rain, turning to hail, and later snow… so I need to pull out my spring decor and make it spring inside no matter what the weather forecast brings! This simple but beautiful mantel by A Nod to Navy is lovely — and be sure to read her tips for decorating a mantel.

Favorite sign of spring: I mentioned the snow, right? So I’m picking TWO favorite signs of spring to make up for it This book page spring art by Refresh Living is so cute on her vintage farmhouse mantel.

Favorite big kitchen: Not everyone wants or needs a big kitchen, but just look at all this countertop space! (Utah Valley Home Show, home built by Split Rock Fine Homes, designed by Hamilton Park Interiors)

Favorite you did it: Another reader feature, from Noreen, who made this bathroom renovation a whole family project — the helpful princesses are so precious! Here’s the before:

From Noreen: “We wanted to update our old and tired looking bathroom without breaking the bank! It is a very small space with the vanity separate from the toilet and shower. We used basic white subway tile with grey grout with an accent glass tile. The shower head is a double manifold with a tall extension for a rain shower head, with the other outlet providing for a hand-held shower. For the floors, we used a light wood-look tile and we added radiant heat floors.

Since it was such a small space, it was a budget friendly splurge and worth the extra expense. For storage, we put wood shelves resting on black pipes that made the space look rustic. We replaced the toilet with a water efficient one that also has hidden plumbing, and an extra deep white tub to finish the space.

For our vanity, we added red cedar wood planks to the wall to add extra dimension to the space, and adjustable oval mirrors with dimmer light fixtures to both inside the bathroom and for the vanity area. We also added crown molding to finish the space. Our total renovation budget was $2,200.00

As far as tips and recommendation we used “Gold Bond eXP tile backer” boards from home depot for the walls, having previously utilized other cement boards as tile backers this one appeared durable and was much easier to work with since cutting was done with a razor knife. We also used “redguard” roll on water proofer as an extra layer of protection.

Another tip is having your 3 year old girls help with every step, it is a fun age and they love it (Princess dresses are optional though!)

Favorite vignette: I spied this vignette and saw a familiar looking project… don’t those corbels look just like this vintage set that we shared the DIY building plan and template for? I love the whole setup, from the herringbone wood sign to the perfect aged finish on the shelf. I couldn’t track down the original creator, though, so if you know, please let me know because I’d love to give them credit!

Modern Cabin Interior Design: 4 Inspiring Examples To Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

Life seems to race along at a faster rate than ever before now that we have instant access to everything and everyone via wireless internet and social media platforms. Our smartphones seem to be superglued to the palms of our hands whether we intend it or not. Have you ever wished you could break free from the shackles of modern media for a while by running away to a place where it simply cannot reach you? Well, imagine tucking yourself up in one of these four inspiring modern cabins in a twinkling snowy wilderness, with not one single ping or alert to disturb your outer or inner peace…

Visualizer: VIZN Studio A modern cabin doesn’t require you to “rough it” just to get away from it all. This first contemporary cabin interior contains all the desired home comforts – bar the TV, computer and phone. A cushiony sectional sofa is flanked by a selection of indoor plants perched on modern plant stands. A large piece of monochrome fox wall art decorates the wall to bring in a little wildlife.

Black floor cushions and a tree stump stool sit to one side of the modern sofa. A tribal patterned rug takes the centre spot beneath a trio of coffee table designs.

Opposite the modern coffee tables is an additional grey sofa that looks back at the first. Above the second couch, deer head wall decor in a silhouette style adds another modern take on rustic art.

Hanging from the lofty ceiling are Flos AIM pendant lights, with chunky black metal shades.

The other half of this cabin contains an extremely generously sized kitchen diner, where the dining table is built right up into kitchen work station. Facing into the lounge area is a set of open kitchen shelves that display a selection of crockery, cookbooks, pots and pans, a teapot and pitcher.

Four Scandinavian style chairs sit at the dining bench, including the Muuto Cover Chair and the Tom Kelley Salt Chair.

A fur throw warms up the seat of one of the dining chairs, adding a rustic flourish. Grey chevron floor tiles keep a modern edge to the scheme.

Up on a mezzanine level there is an attic bedroom. The pallet bed base and a bedroom chair have been painted white to match stark white surroundings. This minimalist bedroom interior could be anywhere but looks out over rustic cabin decor below, giving its inhabitants the best of both worlds.

Looks like they could use a headphone stand!

One entire side of each volume is completely glazed from roofline to ground level, as if the building had been cut through like cake to reveal its filling. Outside, a heated pool steams in the cold winter air.

From the back the home, it appears as though it is closed up tight like a fortress. Interior lights twinkle through back doors that look armoured against the elements.

A deck has been cleared to make way for a modern deck chair…

… With a view like this you can see why it’s worth braving the cold air.

Inside this cabin, ceilings are high and furniture is low.

The sofa is a multi-colored sectional design that allows cushions to be separated off as needed, like this one pulled closer to the roaring fireplace. The decor of this rustic living room is a combination of wood clad walls and a concrete floor.

As far as living rooms for book lovers go, this one should hit the spot. The library is also kept at floor level – or rather at stair level – as the books are stored on a three wooden steps that climb up toward the kitchen.

The fourth step is a concrete platform. An open plan kitchen sits atop the concrete volume as though it were a stage and this were a public cooking demonstration.

Also up on the concrete stage is a rustic dining room.

Whilst we hope that the candles in this chandelier are the fake flame kind, this alternative is fire-safe and more fitting for a smaller area.

Modern wall sconces gently illuminate the rustic bedroom.

Small pops of bright colour lift and modernise large areas of natural wood tone.

A fur rug keeps things rustic.

A decorative vase sweetens the bedside.

A coloured shelf adds a nice twist to open kitchen shelving, and creates an eye-catching spot to display indoor herb planters and a kitchen clock above the kitchen sink and cutting boards below. Two kitchen stools form a casual eating area at the wooden bench.

High gloss black wall cabinets complete the look.

A fur throw warms up the seat of one of the dining chairs, adding a rustic flourish. Grey chevron floor tiles keep a modern edge to the scheme.

Whilst we hope that the candles in this chandelier are the fake flame kind, this alternative is fire-safe and more fitting for a smaller area.

Modern wall sconces gently illuminate the rustic bedroom.

East Hampton Modern Farmhouse Beautifully designed by Debra Geller of Debra Geller Interior Design, this East Hampton home combines classic interior design with modern farmhouse influences. Here, the designer gives more details about this impressive home. “This client already lived in their home for 16 years and they wanted to make major changes. We did a gut renovation and doubled the size of the house from approx. 4000 sf to 8000 sf. These clients were amazing and easy to work with and have great sense of style. My vision was to incorporate their love of family, easy living, and beauty and create an amazing space for them. I used reclaimed barn wood on the living room feature wall, beautiful wide plank oak floors throughout, stained a pretty custom mixed neutral gray. We kept that color pallet going in the entire house with paint and fabrics, adding different accent colors in each room. Lighting was a primary feature as well.. each room as a special and spectacular lighting – many lights were custom made for the space. I am also an artist and I painted them a beautiful serene ocean painting for the living room tie it all together as well as a heart painting for the breakfast room, creating more Zen elements. I also designed all of the upholstery, and window treatment, and my workshop J&J upholstery out of Norwalk, made it all for me. All rugs were also custom made for the house, as well as the kitchen table, foyer table with custom made iron base and a bluestone top. I designed and had made a concrete fireplace mantel and a concrete pool bathroom vanity top. The barn door in the breakfast room was also made for the house. Along with a had crafted reclaimed white oak dining table, and a hand made zinc kitchen table.” It was very important to me and my client that entire house flow, with texture, light, color and space, and be warm and livable… I believe I accomplished all of those goals. The best part of my job is seeing my clients face when they walk into their completed home, and tears of happiness roll down their faces.. I have done my job!! Can you imagine cooking in this space? Kitchen Cabinet: Custom cabinets designed by Debra Geller Interior Design, maple that was hand painted on site with satin finish. Ceiling was done in a coffer with a shiplap inside of each coffer. Appliances are all Thermador – cooktop, ovens, refrigerator. Lighting & Stools Lights: Visual Comfort. Counterstools: Tolix Kitchen Island The kitchen island was custom painted with a brushed finish in darker gray over a light gray to create a contrast to the white main cabinets. Kitchen Island Dimension: 104″ x 59″ Kitchen Sink Perimeter countertop and farmhouse sink are honed carrara marble. Similar white marble farmhouse sink can be found here. Sink Faucet: Perrin and Rowe. Orchids Orchids always bring an elegant feel to any room. Countertop The island countertop is black absolute granite with a leather finish to give it texture and dimensions. The black island top was chosen to compliment the black coffered ceiling. Hardware: Pulls and latch closures are merit metal done in a polished chrome to withstand the salt air in the Hamptons – polished chrome holds up very well when the base metal is brass.
