Dear Beloved Followers!
Five seemingly short months ago I created this blog to be a part of the Spartacus rp fandom here on tumblr! Today, I woke up to see that I hit a HUGE milestone and just HAD to express my absolute gratitude to each and every one of you! I NEVER thought I would hit such a number; I never thought SO many people would take such an active interest in my blog! Words can not express how much this truly means to me! I am not very good at follow forevers, so I have a message to you all!
My Family: These are the people that I talk to pretty much every day! Whether its been from the beginning, or just recently. Sometimes you connect with someone and you find yourself talking to them more and more, until the point comes where you can’t imagine a day without them! You all have been supportive, kind, and just there for me when I needed it! You know who you are! You are more than just writing partners to me, you are true friends!
My Fellow Rpers: The people that I have the pleasure of writing with and getting to enjoy their wonderful talent and occasionally talk to! Thank you for being willing to plot with me, post with me, for sending me memes, and for making tumblr a safe place to express our creative freedom! I am in awe of all you talented writers out there! If I have not written with you yet, WE MUST RECTIFY THIS!! Please send me a message or a poke, and know that I would absolutely LOVE to plot and interact with you!
My Fellow Nonrpers: I may not rp with the rest of you but please do not think that makes me any less grateful for you all! Each and every one of you who have taken an active interest in this blog, are so kind and incredible for the show of support! Each follow, each like. each reblog, means the absolute world to me! I was once criticized for following back non rp blogs, but you know what . . . I am SO grateful that I did! So please, don’t be shy to send me [or Aggie] an ask! Or to message me just to say hi! You will be met with the utmost enthusiasm and excitement because I TRULY LOVE YOU ALL!!
I am thinking of what I can do to express my appreciation for you all! I value each and every one of you so much! I am hoping to come up with something soon but in the meantime . . . I can offer you an AGRON POSTCARD or a GIF URL! Don’t hesitate to contact me for either, or BOTH! As I said before, if we have not interacted before, I REALLLY hope we can change that!! I am SO EXCITED to meet new people!
So from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! I feel incredibly blessed and touched to be among such an amazing, positive, supportive, community!! Here to meeting more people, chatting it up with you all, and all the in character and out of character shenanigans!!!
MUCH LOVE AND HUGS!!! *TACKLES EVERYONE!!*

How to navigate a weekend of college football through an Orange and Blue lens
Greetings Tiger fans! Today is one of those special fall Saturdays. Everybody sleep well last night? Especially enjoy that cup of joe this morning? The cool, crisp air is all around us for the first time all season. And on this blessed Saturday, we all get to enjoy the rarest of moments in the season...a reprieve from the anxiety and stress we uniquely identify with as proud supporters of our Auburn Tigers.
It’s not that we don’t enjoy this. It’s our birthright as fans, after all. But today, while we enjoy a much needed break, standing at a respectable 5-1 on the season, let me take this opportunity with a handful of games both in and around the SEC to hopefully figure out where our rooting interests should lie today. First, a few things to keep in mind...
Of course I’m always pulling for Auburn.
I’m looking at this as a “what ultimately benefits our cause” perspective
I’m always are going to pull against Georgia
I’m always are going to pull against Alabama...***UNLESS***
Alabama is playing Georgia with a national championship on the line*
*About #5...I’m not here to pretend like I haven’t gotten just a little bit numb to Alabama winning a national championship. It is what it is. But I will never yield ground to that school to the east who wants to pretend like they’re God’s gift to football. This is a group of people who spit on me and many other Auburn folks in Athens in 2014 and 2016. This is a group of humans who choose to bark like animals at other people. I can not, and will not, find reason to ever hope for anything but the worst kind of despair and disappointment for those people. They have managed to make Alabama the lesser of two evils by their actions, and they should never be forgiven for it.
Now, with that out of the way, onto this weekend’s slate!
Florida at LSU
I know what you’re thinking. A Florida win serves to benefit Auburn both in the hopes of an SEC West Championship, a potential rematch with Florida in Atlanta, and may expose LSU before we travel to Baton Rouge in 2 weeks. Plus, Florida doing well should, on paper, make us look better. I’ve thought the same thing this past week! But let’s think this one through for a moment:
An LSU win here, and an Auburn victory in Baton Rouge negates any need for us to care about a loss to Florida helping our resume
Florida ain’t getting back to Atlanta with Georgia on left on the schedule, and probably another loss hidden in that schedule somewhere (look at their record against Missouri the last few years!)
We need LSU to hang in there for now in the West standings with us and Alabama left to play. Let’s say we beat LSU and they somehow beat Alabama for the first time since 2011. We’re going to want them to win a tiebreaker against Alabama if we can’t win out and take another loss between Georgia and Alabama.
For these reasons...Geaux Tigers. Also if we’re being honest my bitter Auburn heart ain’t gonna pull for a team that had one of the dumbest wins over us in a hot minute.
Play it. Play it early, play it often. Make the Valley shake and unleash hell.
Texas vs. Oklahoma
Admittedly I am LOVING watching Jalen Hurts this year! I finally get why Alabama people cherished him so much. For the life of me I can’t understand why in the world it took me until this season for me to finally come around and appreciate him and his talent.
These two teams are most likely to play twice, and I want Oklahoma in the playoff. Why? Because I don’t want 2 SEC teams in the playoff. For us to make it we’re going to have to win out, so no sense in pulling against a team when a loss could open a door for a non-SEC Champion Alabama or Georgia to get into this thing without earning it.
Jalen Hurts’ story is truly one that we should all be able to get behind and be happy for him. Plus the idea of him winning a Heisman, winning a showdown with Alabama in the playoff, and a national championship will drive them insane.
BOOMER SOONER!
Florida State at Clemson
Clemson ain’t as good as they were a year ago...yet. Seems they do this every year where they take until November to figure it out as a fully-charged super weapon.
We need Clemson in the playoff for the same reason that we need Oklahoma in the playoff. We don’t need 2 SEC teams in this thing. Matter of fact, if it’s not us, we don’t need any.
Clemson is one of the few teams in America that is capable of doing the dang thing against Alabama or Georgia.
Florida State, despite having a head coach in Willie Taggert that I like, doesn’t deserve to ever have anything good happen to them again. If you need to know why then you’re on the wrong website.
C-L-E-M-S-O-N!
Mississippi State at Tennessee
So here’s the thing...we need Tennessee to figure out this whole football thing again. As long as they’re the only other school in the conference to play Georgia and Alabama every year, we need this program to find some semblance of life and get on the right track. With that in mind, we need Mississippi State to win this game. Why?
Tennessee is past the point of no return on this season. If Pruitt loses his job over it, maybe they’ll finally get it right with the next hire. Don’t give this group of people reason to practice patience when they’ve got a coach who is absolutely going to get fired at some point. Pull for them to go ahead and pull that trigger.
Joe Moorhead is 100% in over his head in Starkville, is no Dan Mullen, and it would be super nice to give them reason to have a tad more patience with him after BLOWING IT last season with the nation’s #1 defense.
In summary...CLANGA!
Alabama at Texas A&M
Texas A&M is the weirdest group of people I have ever seen. Don’t let the “Howdy!” greeting fool you. Members of their last national championship team were in their 60’s the last time Georgia won a national championship. And that was THIRTY-NINE YEARS AGO. This group of people worship a collie and have partaken in drinking $75 million worth of Kool-Aid on an overrated head coach who is going to perpetually lose 3-5 games a year. AND IT WOULD ABSOLUTELY INFURIATE ALABAMA PEOPLE TO LOSE TO THEM. It goes without saying who we are pulling for here, because, while this ain’t happening, there is nothing that could happen this weekend that would be more hilarious. GIG ‘EM TEXAS AGGIES! (Sorry Crow)
BONUS ROOTING INTEREST!!!
Tide fans having to endure a game with 60 degree temperatures and being vastly underprepared due to them being conditioned to their greatest rival...the heat.
South Carolina at Georgia
SPEAKING OF THINGS THAT WOULD BE HILARIOUS...this...this ain’t happening. Although, the year Muschamp got fired from Florida, this happened.
I think the Nature Boy sums up my feelings perfectly...Go ‘Cocks!
Ole Miss at Missouri
Don’t need Ole Miss to be a resume building win for Auburn
Definitely need Missouri to continue to get better in case they’ve got a shot at Georgia later this year
Ole Miss needs to hurry up and fire Matt Luke and make a huge mistake by hiring a Saban assistant who isn’t ready away from Alabama since they won’t hire RichRod or Mike MacIntyre since they’ve done absolutely nothing to show they should be considered for the job.
M-I-Z! Z-O-U!
is a place that calls you back with a simple, familiar tune. Dear old varsity, here's to you. #MIZ108HC | #ShowMe pic.twitter.com/m14EHWNwEA
— Mizzou Football (@MizzouFootball) October 10, 2019
Arkansas at Kentucky
It would be easy to think we shouldn’t care who wins this game because Gus Malzahn is going to bring the annual hand of God slap to Arkansas next weekend, but this is a team that has gotten better, even in defeat. The last thing I want to see is them having any semblance of hope going into next weekend. I want a half-full stadium for a breakfast game next weekend so they’re demoralized when we step on the field.
C-A-T-S CATS! CATS! CATS!
(Never forget that this happened. Ever.)
UNLV at Vandy
Non-conference game for an SEC team. By default, I’m pulling for UNLV. Anything good happening to anyone else in this conference is ultimately not good for Auburn.
VIVA LAS VEGAS!
Check back in the future for more tutoring on exactly how Auburn fans need to view important games of the weekend!

What else are you gonna do with your stupid life? College football watch ‘em ups for week 2 (officially) of the 2018 season
Tumblr media
I’m all in on the rebirth of the run & shoot and don’t know if I have enough caring in me to write about every game this week. FUCK IT WE’LL DO IT LIVE!
Disclaimers about time zones and other sites and what the fuck ever go here. It doesn’t matter, we rake in like zero ad dollars from these posts.
This week is an oddity due to a lack of off-day games. Just one Friday and no others. I kind of wish every week was like this but I think this is the only one for the year.
Saturday, September 8
Matchup                                                     Time (ET)                 TV/Mobile
Arizona at Houston                                   12:00pm           ABC/ESPN2 (RM
Khalil Tate and Kevin Sumlin might just be a match made in hell. Ed Oliver has personally humiliated some great dual-threat QBs in the past but I don’t know if Tate is actually a threat through the air. Not sure what that means for the all-important stats.
Duke at Northwestern                               12:00pm                    ESPNU
Northwestern sucks. I’ll still root for them but they’re not good.
Eastern Michigan at Purdue                      12:00pm                      BTN
The nation’s leader in all-purpose yards at home against EMU? Hell yes.
Georgia Tech at USF                                   12:00pm              ABC/ESPN2 (RM)
I almost made a national champions joke but USF and UCF are actually different schools. Not by much, mind you. Based on one week against stiffs I have the impression this is a good year for the Ramblin’ Wreck.
Liberty at Army                                            12:00pm                       CBSSN
Army doesn’t even play a cool version of the option. This game is a pox.
Mississippi State at Kansas State              12:00pm                        ESPN
A bunch of guys who will play in the NFL next year are playing against each other for teams that will combine to lose 10+ games this year. This is a headache in a bag. I think I’d take KState +8 and the over of 54.5.
Nevada at Vanderbilt                                    12:00pm                        SECN
Oddly enough, I’d be totally into this one if Vandy were flying West for a 10pm kickoff. This version looks terrible, though.
New Mexico at Wisconsin                            12:00pm                         BTN
Can’t wait for Hornibrook to end up getting a Heisman invite. He’s Wisconsin’s answer to Gino Torretta.
Towson at Wake Forest                                 12:00pm                   ACCNExtra
I’ve always thought of it as “Nextra” but then I saw it written as ACCNE and now there’s no going back.
Western Michigan at Michigan                      12:00pm                        FS1
I know I’m stupid and crazy but I haven’t sold all of my Harbaugh stock just yet. I’ve heard about how he’s not a college coach and he’ll be back in the NFL next year but I can’t shake the feeling that he can still get things to click with just a little more time.
Georgia State at NC State                              12:30pm                       RSN
NC State lost a ton of talent to the pros this year and the next in line from QBU isn’t really as great as his offseason draft hype. Georgia State is absolutely going to beat the spread.
Holy Cross at Boston College                         1:00pm                     ACCNExtra
Somehow this battle for Boston reminded me of somebody explaining in excruciating detail about how BC isn’t in Boston and it just makes me hate that place and its people all over again.
UCLA at Oklahoma                                           1:00pm                        FOX
UCLA generally doesn’t do very well in early games and Oklahoma’s talent level is very obviously higher than the Bruins at every position. I don’t know what point to make here. Hopefully Rodney Anderson gets more than 5 carries this week but he might not need to.
Air Force at Florida Atlantic                             2:00pm       CBSSN / Facebook
FAU got murdered by Oklahoma last week so I’m a little bit intrigued by how Lane bounces back. Vegas really likes the Owls but I’m not really sure why.
Portland State at Oregon                                 2:00pm                    Pac-12N
This is some high quality trash. I won’t watch it due to dumb circumstances but I’d enjoy it if I could.
William & Mary at Virginia Tech                       2:00pm                ACCNExtra
The Hokies looked pretty good against FSU. I forgot all about Josh Jackson since he missed the 2017 season but I think he’s a pretty good college QB.
Kansas at Central Michigan                            3:00pm                  ESPN Plus
What can you say about Kansas football without laughing maniacally?
Arkansas State at Alabama                             3:30pm                    ESPN2
Red Wolves vs. Crimson Tide should be some sort of rivalry. Bama looks every bit as good as expected so this will probably be a bloodbath. In red.
Ball State at Notre Dame                                 3:30pm                     NBC
Notre Dame gets to walk around like a top 10 team for now but a 7-point win over Michigan at home in a game that felt like a blowout doesn’t strike me as a springboard to a CFB Playoff berth. Brian Kelly is still a shitty murderer so fuck him.
Buffalo at Temple                                              3:30pm                    ESPN3
Tyree Jackson threw 6 TDs last week while Temple was losing to Villanova. The result? Temple is favored by 5. That seems wrong. Are there really people betting their hearts in what looks like a classic degenerate’s matchup?
Colorado at Nebraska                                       3:30pm                      ABC
Big 8 rivals square off in the first game (probably!) of the Scott Frost era. Smart money is probably on Colorado.
Georgia at South Carolina                                 3:30pm                     CBS
If Coach Boom is going to make the most of his great roster he needs to spring the upset here. That doesn’t seem crazy to me so look for UGA to win by 40.
Howard at Kent State                                        3:30pm                ESPN Plus
A bunch of 1-AA teams are in the watch ‘em ups for a second time this week but Howard is closest to my heart. Love the Bison to trample the Gun Girls.
Memphis at Navy                                               3:30pm                    CBSSN
This is the only game most years where I cheer against Memphis. I don’t have a great feeling about this Navy team, though, so my advice for you who are wondering is to put the mansion on Memphis to win by more than 6 and for the over to hit some time in the third quarter.
Morgan State at Akron                                      3:30pm                  ESPN Plus
I’ll leave this one to Soused.
North Carolina at East Carolina                       3:30pm                     ESPNU
This game was in the maybe watch column on SB Nation’s grid this week and I can’t comprehend why this is anything but AVOID!!!!! even if they don’t offer that designation.
Rutgers at Ohio State                                        3:30pm                       BTN
Ohio State is out here with a boatload of talent and a scheme that mostly runs itself in games like this. I wish all bad things on the Ohio State football program but they have some really great players that I don’t hate.
Wagner at Syracuse                                           3:30pm                 ACCNExtra
Eric Dungey’s quest for a rushing title continues.
ETSU at Tennessee                                            4:00pm                      SECN
Without looking I think Tennessee is probably favored. By too much.
Lamar at Texas Tech                                          4:00pm                 FSN / FSGo
I make jokes about Lamar being just some dude every year and it’s dumb but I can’t look at Lamar and not think it’s just some dude instead of a team.
Southern Illinois at University of Mississippi    4:00pm                     SECNA
What’s up with fixing the mascot name but not the other super racist allusion in your sports programs? Progress of some sort, I guess. This is a body bag game of the lowest caliber.
Iowa State at Iowa                                              5:00pm                      FOX
Potentially cool game at college football’s most heartwarming stadium. Nothing here not to love.
North Dakota at Washington                              5:00pm                  Pac-12N
Is this the same school that Carson Wentz went to? I’m not looking it up. A lot of you were all in on Auburn trashing UDub last week but that didn’t actually happen. Washington could still win 12 straight and end up back in playoff contention, even without their star LT.
Appalachian State at Charlotte                          6:00pm                ESPN Plus
Wild to think this is 1-A on 1-A.
Maryland at Bowling Green                                 6:00pm               ESPN Plus
It was funny to see Texas lose and all but let’s all remember to hate the fuck out of Maryland’s coaches and program from here to eternity.
Savannah State at Miami (FL)                             6:00pm               ACCNExtra
There is no reason for most people to give a shit about this game but I’m interested to see if the freshman QBs are really bad or if Mark Richt is just being way too conservative with his roster by starting Malik Rosier. My gut says nobody is worse for this team than Rosier. I know Ahmmon Richards, for one, agrees with me.
SC State at UCF                                                   6:00pm                  ESPN3
Here’s the national champs. Not gonna lose the winning streak here.
UMass at Georgia Southern                                6:00pm                 ESPN Plus
Now we’re getting into some good degeneracy. There are too many other games at this same time to really dive into this shitfest but it’s real as hell to me.
Youngstown State at West Virginia                     6:00pm                    ATTSN
I was looking at games on CBS Sports and they didn’t have a channel listed for this game. ATTSN = AT&T Sports Network, guessing a DirecTV exclusive? I love Holgo even if I kinda hate the Air Raid.
Eastern Kentucky at Marshall                             6:30pm                 ESPN Plus
Here’s another great backup game. I don’t know if anybody good is on either team this year.
Baylor at UTSA                                                     7:00pm     CBSSN / Facebook
Ugh. Fucking Baylor. Go the fuck away forever, Baylor.
Clemson at Texas A&M                                        7:00pm                      ESPN
Until about 5 years ago Clemson and aTm were actually the same program. Now Clemson is a legit 5-star program and I fucking hate it. Not enough to root for the Aggies, mind you. Talent watching is pretty good in this one but the idea of Jimbo Fisher falling flat on his face in Aggieland is too good not to dream about.
Florida A&M at Troy                                              7:00pm                  ESPN Plus
Let’s go Rattlers!
Indiana State at Louisville                                   7:00pm                 ACCNExtra
Petrino might be on the verge of sunsetting unless he flukes his way into another megastar. Louisville looks like the most ACC of ACC teams right now even though they have no business being in the conference. This should be an AAC team all the way.
Southeastern La. at LSU                                     7:00pm                    ESPN2
I want to whisper to all of you that LSU really isn’t all that good but I’m typing and you’re maybe reading it instead.
Southern at LA Tech                                            7:00pm                 ESPN Plus
Louisiana Tech is one of my pet stupid programs. I always think they’re one random star recruit away from becoming the next offense lab in college football. This probably isn’t the year, though.
Texas Southern at Texas State                           7:00pm              KNVA/ESPN3
If anybody has more than a gambling interest in this one I am dying to hear about it. Seriously. Explain yourself.
UAB at Coastal Carolina                                      7:00pm                ESPN Plus
Last week I insulted UAB’s football program and they went out and won 52-0, their first shutout victory in 10 years. So let me continue my campaign for them to drop the program again.
ULM at Southern Miss                                          7:00pm                 ESPN3
I don’t think I realized until right now that CUSA is the surviving shell of the old Metro Conference. I thought the Metro just died. Anyway, CUSA football is MACtion for degenerates. Meaning that I like it. This game got a shoutout on the NFL’s season opener so maybe it will draw an audience in the hundreds.
UT Martin at Middle Tennessee                           7:00pm               ESPN Plus
The Tee Martins are back! How does it feel to play football your whole life and go to college for football and then realize that you’re playing for the team that’s being paid to lay down to Middle Tennessee State? Not even like Wake Forest or somebody like that - worse! It still sounds kind of fun but embarrassing at the same time.
Wyoming at Missouri                                             7:00pm                  ESPNU
Drew Lock has some similar physical traits to Wyoming’s QB from last year but I think he’s gotten better coaching. Similar arm talent(!!!) at least. I don’t know about the raw athleticism which, no shit, Josh Allen has tons of. Anyway, Missouri should stomp all over Wyoming.
Samford at Florida State                                       7:20pm              ACCNExtra
The Bobby Bowden Bowl! The immediate reactions to Willie Taggert at FSU were loud and angry but he needs some time to sort through the weird mess that the team devolved into last year. I don’t think he can keep running the offense he had at USF with this roster, though, and he needs to figure that out quickly.
Alabama State at Auburn                                       7:30pm                SECNA
The Littlest Iron Bowl! Auburn is another team that didn’t look great to me in week 1. And they don’t have any obvious path to the playoffs.
Arkansas at Colorado State                                  7:30pm                CBSSN
This might be the farthest an SEC team has traveled for a regular season game this century.
FIU at Old Dominion                                               7:30pm          beIN SPORTS
Keep the faith in Butch Davis. It’ll turn out pretty well in the end. I think.
Fresno State at Minnesota                                     7:30pm                   FS1
I think CSU-Fresno had the highest point total in the country in week 1 but it came against 1-AA Idaho State. Yeah, I just wanted to drop a mention to Idaho State as a (once again) 1-AA team. This game is probably trash but it has the decency to be a dumb night game that nobody will notice unless it gets wild.
Incarnate Word at North Texas                               7:30pm             ESPN Plus
This is truly bottom of the barrel stuff but UNT does have the nation’s leader in passing yards per game!
Kentucky at Florida                                                 7:30pm                  SECN
UF is really heavily favored to win their 32nd straight against Kentucky but why? The line is only 14 but odds are weighted like 88% for the Gators to win. Kentucky sucks but doesn’t Florida?
Maine at WKU                                                          7:30pm             ESPN Plus
A lot of oddball evening games this week. I like it.
Utah at NIU                                                                7:30pm             ESPNews
Northern Illinois got blown out by Iowa last week. Utah looked like hell for the first 30 minutes against Weber State. I don’t have a point. Utah will probably win by 20.
Virginia at Indiana                                                      7:30pm                BTN
UVA and IU are more similar than dissimilar historically speaking. This game makes me annoyed just knowing that it’s going to happen and that it’s on Big Ten Network. Get your shit together, Hoos.
Western Illinois at Illinois                                          7:30pm                BTN
It would be so Lovie Smith to lose this game.
Cincinnati at Miami (Ohio)                                         8:00pm   Raycom / ESPN3
I agree with what Ohio State fans were saying a few years back: Luke Fickell sucks.
New Mexico State at Utah State                              8:00pm           Facebook
Facebook? For this one? Boo hiss. This is prime gambling athletics, nobody should be tracking you as you watch this one.
Nicholls at Tulane                                                      8:00pm              ESPN3
Nicholls! The Nicholls Nickels! Tulane doesn’t get a lot of easy wins but I think we can all agree with some bit of confidence that Tulane may suck loudly but they’re still better than Kansas.
Penn State at Pitt                                                       8:00pm               ABC
I have an unhealthy and unrealistic need for Pitt to win this game.
Sacramento State at San Diego State                     8:00pm             No TV (!!!)
What in the goddamn fucking hell is SDSU doing with no TV coverage in 2018? Christ almighty. This is hilarious.
South Alabama at Oklahoma State                          8:00pm                FSN
I wish South Alabama was good enough to at least put the fear of god in Okie State but they really aren’t. Expect a typical early season massacre from the Cowboys.
Southern Utah at Oregon State                                8:00pm             Pac-12N
What the hell is this?
Tulsa at Texas                                                             8:00pm                 LHN
Tulsa only beat Central Arkansas by 11 last week but Texas lost to Maryland. 23 points might be too much to expect for the Longhorns at this juncture.
USC at Stanford                                                          8:30pm                 FOX
The Pac-12 is known for two things: bad scheduling and bad referees. Also, bad defenses so that makes three things. This is bad scheduling. Why is the most marketable game of your whole conference year happening in week 2 at 8:30pm EST? This is absolutely moronic.
UTEP at UNLV                                                              9:00pm               ATTSN
Ever since it popped into my head last year or the year before I just can’t get over UNLV being confederate-themed. What the hell is that?
California at BYU                                                        10:15pm              ESPN2
This is actually beautiful scheduling which makes me think BYU came up with it themselves. Great uniform matchup even if both teams stink.
UConn at Boise State                                               10:15pm    ESPN2/ESPNU
Haha, UConn. What are you doing? How did this program actually make it to major bowl game in the last 10 years? They’re 31-point underdogs playing past their bedtimes against an OK-at-best Boise State team. This somehow feels earned.
Michigan State at Arizona State                               10:45pm               ESPN
Really not sure how Sparty agreed to this one but if I have one strong conviction from week 1 it’s that Herm Edwards should have stayed a TV talking head and left the coaching game to everybody else.
San Jose State at Washington State                         11:00pm           Pac-12N
Very fine watchin’ ‘em up here. You have to catch them all.
Rice at Hawai’i                                                              11:59pm          Spectrum
Spectrum is a station? Spectrum is a cable company. Anyway, Rice played Ed Oliver last week and now they have to face early RTARLsman frontrunner Cole McDonald. I’m cautiously bandwagoning for Hawai’i.

The college football world reacts to Keith Jackson’s passing
The voice of college football passed away at the age of 89.
Keith Jackson, the college football legend and a titan of broadcast television, has died at the age of 89, per his family.
Jackson’s career spanned decades for ABC in which he called nearly every sport you can think of. But at his best and most poignant, Jackson was the voice of Saturday afternoon college football during the season and the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day (which he nicknamed “The Granddaddy Of Them All.”) His final telecast was the 2006 Rose Bowl, regarded by many as the best game of all time. Those who worked with him spoke to SB Nation about that night earlier this season.
“That was the tough part about the assignment, because here is the greatest college football — the voice of college football,” Fouts said. “This was gonna be his last game. The thing about it was, it may have been his best game ever, too. He was all over it. He was perfect that night.”
Jackson was notable for calls like his famous “fumble,” with drawn out excitement, and his “woah, nellie” will live in the hearts and ears of so many. The Roopville, Georgia native explained where that came from.

Jackson’s last televised appearance came on New Year’s Day 2017 at the Rose Bowl. As fitting a setting as any.
People loved his endless wit and wisdom ...

A great #KeithJackson call. He was doing a #Kansas game, that a man of his professional stature should not have been calling. He asked, "Why are we here?"

The Secret Origin of Halloweentown Revealed: How a Little Girl Inspired a Beloved Franchise

The Secret Origin of Halloweentown Revealed: How a Little Girl Inspired a Beloved Franchise
For almost 20 years, Halloweentown has been an annual destination for many people.
The cult favorite Disney Channel Original Movie first debuted in 1998, introducing a world most kids (OK, and adults) can only dream of: Halloweentown, the whimsical place where all the supernatural creatures live every other day of the year. Four movies later, the Halloweentown franchise is one of the most beloved seasonal offerings, with fans even flocking to the town of St. Helens, Oregon, where the first movie was filmed, to live out their childhood fantasy. (Consider it the original Hogwarts.)
E! News spoke to executive producer Sheri Singer and star Kimberly J. Brown about the film’s legacy, the controversial recasting of Marnie in the fourth film and the magic of Debbie Reynolds, the legendary star who played Grandma Aggie.
Sheri Singer first heard of Halloweentown when she was an executive at Walt Disney Television just after the Wonderful World of Disney programming had ended in 1991, transitioning into a six-movie deal with NBC. As part of that new deal, she was set to collaborate on up to three movies with producer Steve White, and wanting to spread out the projects to other people, she tried to convince him to duck out of the deal. He almost did, but then decided not to at the last minute. Then…fate stepped in.
Singer: What ended up happening to the man that I had tried to fire was I married him. And toward the end of my time at Walt Disney Studios, he came in one day to me and said…”I don’t know where to go with this but my daughter said to me, ‘Dad, where do all the creatures from Halloween go the rest of the year when it’s not October 31?'” And that’s how it was born.
After dubbing it Halloweentown and coming up with a seven-act structure, Singer and White pitched the project to NBC as part of the six-movie deal.
Singer: It had to have a little bit more adult appeal because they were airing these movies at 9 o’clock at night. [NBC] bought it, we developed it in 1994, and we had a writer write the script, and NBC passed. They decided they didn’t really want to do anything, even though we put in adult characters.
A few years later, they brought it to Disney Channel, who initially passed. But after airing their first successful original movie in 1997, Under Wraps, they wanted Halloweentown after all. The movie was quickly redeveloped so that it was more of a kids’ movie.  Singer: Doing it at the Disney Channel, which was really the best possible home for the idea, we were able to be very whimsical. We needed to create these really interesting characters. They were fun and slightly scary, but not too scary.
After getting the go-ahead from Disney Channel, casting began. First up, legendary star Debbie Reynolds. Singer: I think right about this time, Debbie had decided she wanted to open herself up to doing some television. When we saw the list, we took one look at her name and said, oh my god, would she really do it? This is absolutely unbelievably blessed and terrific idea for casting. And she did. We never went to anyone else.
When it came to the rest of the roles, the casting directors read everybody, from the leads to characters with only one line, as the Disney Channel had yet to establish a field of talent to pull from. A 13-year-old Kimberly J. Brown eventually landed the lead role of Marnie.
Singer: She came in and she wasn’t who we had visually pictured, but she was the role. She blew everyone else away. She was great.
Brown: It was so exciting when I found out I got it because I remember loving the script and loving the idea of playing a teenage witch. And then hearing Debbie Reynolds was signed onto it, it was like, oh my gosh, I’m going to play Debbie Reynolds’ granddaughter!
Singer: Debbie was coming in with the blonde look and Judith [Hoag] was reddish blonde, so I thought it would maybe be a lighter girl. Of course, this is so politically incorrect today, but they were all related…I had just envisioned a Blondie. But she came in and she was it.
The role of Kalabar, the mayor-turned-villain, was the hardest to cast, as he had to be scary-but-Disney-Channel-scary. Robin Thomas, who had worked with White on an indie film, Amityville Dollhouse, was cast.
Singer: Of all the actors I’ve worked with in my life, he’s in the top five of doing his homework and really prepares. There was a lot of discussion about how do we do this. I think part of what we did…in his role as the mayor, he was more charming and likable, so that the audience would get used to him not being that scary so when he was, he really was.
To create Halloweentown, production chose a small town, St. Helens, outside of Portland, Oregon. In 1980, Mount St. Helen erupted, and was one of the most disastrous volcanic eruptions in U.S. history.
Singer: Because of the volcano from a few years before that, it was kind of a ghost town. In terms of making the store fronts and getting the location and making a huge town square, there’s not a lot of places in LA you can do that. They were so grateful to have us there and so easy to work with. We had a good crew up there and it fit the demands of the movie. We made all these storefronts. It was really fun and became very iconic.
Disney Channel was heavily involved in establishing the look of the town. “Whimsical” was the goal and the big pumpkin in the town square was always the focal point.
Singer: It needs to almost look like a Disney ride for young kids. One of the nice things about doing something for Disney is you know there are certain tent poles and goals you want to reach in terms of giving kids a lot of eye candy that’s appropriate for their age and is sort of wish-fulfillment.
Brown: The town square really did feel like Halloweentown. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
The costumes were also a major part of the process, with some of the cast members even keeping their wardrobe to use for Halloween. Brown: I have Marnie’s outfit from the second Halloweentown. Debbie gave me the idea, but she had Aggie’s cape and the purple dress and she used to answer the door for Trick-or-Treaters on Halloween in the outfit. I started doing it, too, one or two years in a row, I put on Marnie’s outfit, and gave out candy. It would take some kids a second, but it was really fun. But then it started getting out of hand where some people would come other parts of the year, knock on the door and ask for Marnie.
Working with Reynolds, who passed away in December 2016, just one day after her daughter Carrie Fisher died, was a memorable experience for everyone on set. Singer: We were doing this scene in a theater…and Debbie had to dance and she pulled a muscle doing the dance. She got up and she said, “You know what, I’ve been doing this for years and years. I’ve dance with pulled muscles and pain and I’m not going to hold you up. I’ll do it.” It was so impressive for the young actors, to see what a real work ethic is. Obviously, she went on for the rest of the show and was fine, but it was very interesting and everyone was applauding.
Brown: I just remember how incredibly warm and vivacious she was and very welcoming. She was just so sweet and trying to make us laugh and just very excited. Her energy was infectious. She treated as us peers and not just like, “You’re the kids.” She wanted everyone to shine and succeed and it was so inspiring to watch.
Singer: Debbie Reynolds…started telling us, she had a granddaughter at the time, who’s Billie Lourd, and she said that put her on the map with her granddaughter and all of her granddaughter’s friends and she started getting stopped in airports and all over the place.
Disney Channel
In the fourth and final installment of the franchise, 2006’s Return to Halloweentown, the role of a college-bound Marnie was played by Sara Paxton.
Brown: I’ve been in the entertainment industry since I was five or six years old and there have been many, many things along the way that have come and just been things that have happened and decisions that are out of your control. That was one of those things where they chose to use somebody else instead of me. I was definitely disappointed for the fans and a little personally disappointed because I love Marnie and have loved being able to participate in her adventures as much as people have seemed to love watching her go through them.
Singer: It was not something we wanted to do. We could not come to terms that we felt were fair. We just weren’t able to. We couldn’t make the deal work. That was why and we didn’t want to not do it. I know people didn’t like it, but it’s not like people haven’t been recast before. I always was sorry. That’s how it went.
Brown: I can’t say that I’ve seen the entire movie…but I do appreciate over the years how much the fans have continued to make memes about it and just really want to talk about it and support me in that sense. It’s been very touching over the years.
facebook.com/Halloweentown.OR
Halloweentown lives on in St. Helens. The town dedicates the month of October to the film. In 2015, media outlets picked up on the tradition, letting fans know they could visit Halloweentown. (The first Twilight film also filmed in St. Helens.)
Crystal Farnsworth, communications office for the City of St. Helens: The festival first started in 1998 to celebrate the release of Halloweentown. With the exception of a few years when a lack of funding and volunteers meant that no celebration occurred, the festival has happened every year since then.
Brown: It spread like wildfire [in 2015]…they ended up calling me and that was the year 15,000 people showed up. It was incredible.
. It was the first time the core cast members of the family have been together since I believe we did Halloweentown High. That was their first time back in St. Helens, so that was really cool. We all keep it touch over social media, but it was the first time all of us were together and it was really nice.
Farnsworth: Not only do we see tens of thousands of extra people in the city during the month of October, but we also have people who travel here at other times of the month to see the filming locations. We have people that show up all year long looking for the giant pumpkin in the Plaza Square (although we only put him out during the month of October). We start getting calls at City Hall in the early spring from people wanting to know what events are happening which weekend in October because they are already trying to plan their trip to Spirit of Halloweentown for the fall. We estimate that this year, we will have had around 40,000–50,000 people attend the festival during October 2017.
The original cast of Piper-Cromwells, including Brown, Hoag, J. Paul Zimmerman, and Emily Roeske, reunited at 2017’s Spirit of Halloweentown festival on Oct. 14.
Brown: It was the first time the core cast members of the family have been together since I believe we did Halloweentown High. That was their first time back in St. Helens, so that was really cool. We all keep it touch over social media, but it was the first time all of us were together and it was really nice. It was nice to go back and honor Debbie. It’s such an honor that people want to come and hang out and see where it was filmed. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined this is what we would be doing.
Singer: I realized [Halloweentown] was just one of those things that spoke on so many levels. Beside just the holiday theme, it was about family, and family connections and family secrets and allowing kids to be themselves and come into their own. It just had many, many themes that at the time did not feel overused or seen too many times. When you’re making a movie and you’re post-producing a movie, you get so sick of looking at the movie. I never got tired of seeing the movie.

Penn State RB Saquon Barkley Is The Complete Package
One of the first things NFL scouts do when looking at prospects in preparation for the NFL Draft is watch them against the best competition they faced in the previous season. This fall, we’re going to take a look at the best head-to-head matchups in this week’s slate of college football games. Every week, I’ll give you look at some key matchups to keep an eye on across the country, highlight a prospect who is on the rise, profile a small-school player to watch for next year’s draft, find a Philly connection, and give out a well-deserved game ball to a prospect who stood out in a big way the previous week.
Many pundits view this Saturday’s slate as a “down” week for college football, but when I look around the country I think there are a lot of fun games to study. This week on the College Draft Podcast with Ross Tucker, I broke down all the best matchups from some of the top games of the week, but here’s five more that fans should keep their eyes on this weekend.
Five Matchups To Watch
1. Penn State Saquon RB Barkley vs. Iowa LB Josey Jewell Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, Iowa – Saturday 7:30 p.m. – ABC
Saquon Barkley, to me, is arguably the best prospect in the country, regardless of position. At 5-11, 228 pounds, he’s been on an absolute tear to start the season, with five touchdowns and 548 yards from scrimmage in three games. Barkley is the complete package at the position as an explosive, powerful runner with contact balance and wiggle to make people miss. He’s a load to bring down in the open field, and with his combination of size and speed, he’s going to be tough for any defense in the country to stop.
Iowa always has a group of tough, instinctive defenders up front who will bring their best against the Nittany Lions on Saturday. The man to watch in the middle of that defense is senior linebacker Josey Jewell. At 6-2, 230 pounds, Jewell may not be a star once in the NFL, but he’s going to be a really solid starter for someone because of his ability to key and diagnose plays quickly as a run defender. I think he’ll transition well to the NFL because of his physicality downhill at the point of attack and ability to finish as a tackler (though he did have more misses in that department a year ago than I’d like to see). Jewell’s biggest weakness is in coverage, and I think that could be a key component to this game.
Prediction: Barkley extends his scoring streak when he connects with Trace McSorley on a wheel route down the sideline for a big play, and he adds at least another 135 on the ground as Penn State rolls to victory by more than two touchdowns.
2. Nebraska QB Tanner Lee vs. Rutgers’ D Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, Nebraska – 3:30 p.m. – Big Ten Network
In a class that’s already being tabbed as one of the best quarterback drafts in recent memory, one senior who I think will be considered a riser throughout the pre-draft process is Nebraska’s Tanner Lee. A transfer from Tulane now in his first year starting for the Cornhuskers, Lee has NFL size at 6-4, 220 pounds. He has made headlines every summer throughout his career because of how he’s looked at the Manning Passing Academy. Lee started two years at Tulane before a coaching (and dramatic scheme) change forced his hand to leave his hometown Green Wave and join Nebraska. He’s now taken the reins after a transfer year. Lee has solid physical tools and a quick release. He looks the part of a pro passer, but a rough outing last week against Northern Illinois has many questioning the senior’s potential.
Rutgers has a few defenders who have turned heads of late. In the secondary, juniors Isaiah Wharton (6-1, 204), Blessuan Austin (6’1, 195), and Saquan Hampton (6-1, 207) certainly look the part. They’ll present a challenge for Lee on the back end. The player I’ll focus on, however, is pass rusher Kemoko Turay. The senior arrived on campus as a 210-pound track athlete who earned an offer at a Rutgers high school camp. In five years, he’s developed into a 252-pound pass rusher with great bend and flexibility, and a quick first step. He’s not a developed pass rusher right now, and he’s still not where he needs to be against the run, but players with his combination of length and athleticism typically don’t fall far on draft day. I’ve been studying Turay since his freshman season, and the Newark, New Jersey native is certainly a player to keep a close eye on in this game.
Prediction: Lee gets back on the horse this week against the Scarlet Knights. I think he throws for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns with one interception, but Turay gets his first sack of the year. Nebraska wins the game at home, but I think it’s a win by 10 points or fewer.
3. Old Dominion WR Travis Fulgham vs. Virginia Tech Secondary Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Virginia – 2 p.m. – ACC Network
This may seem like a throwaway game on the schedule, but don’t count out Old Dominion against the Hokies. The Monarchs have a player on the outside who has really caught my eye. Junior wideout Travis Fulgham (6-3, 214 pounds) is a physically imposing receiver who can attack downfield and win in the quick game. Fulgham leads the team with 10 catches for 183 yards and a score, and I’d feel even better about his abilities in this game if he had his partner in crime on the other side. Senior Jonathan Duhart (6-3, 221 pounds) stood out to me a couple of years ago, and had worked his way into one of the top seniors in the country, but was lost for the season two weeks ago due to injury. I’ve had multiple people text me about both players this fall, and it’s for good reason from the flashes I’ve seen over the last couple of years. This is the kind of game that can put Fulgham on the national radar.
The reason for this is because the Virginia Tech secondary is chock full of NFL talent at both corner and safety. Senior Greg Stroman, in my opinion, is the best football player (right now) in the group, while junior Adonis Alexander has the highest upside. At 6-0, 180 pounds, Stroman doesn’t have ideal quickness and speed, but I really like his instincts in both man and zone coverage. Senior Brandon Facyson, whom I’ve compared to former Eagles cornerback Byron Maxwell in the past, has size but his makeup speed is a concern. While ODU will be missing Duhart, the Hokies will be missing one of their stars in the secondary as well. Alexander, who missed last week’s game against ECU, has the physical traits that you would list as “ideal” in a perfect world at the position. He’s 6-3, 193 pounds, runs as well as anyone in the ACC, and has the quickness in and out of breaks to boot. Reports say he will miss this outing as well.
Prediction: Fulgham caught a 71-yard touchdown against UNC last week, and I think he follows that up with four catches for 58 yards and another score. It will be in a losing effort, however, as Stroman gets his second straight game with an interception as the Hokies win a close one in Blacksburg by nine points.
4. UMass TE Adam Breneman vs. Tennessee DBs Micah Abernathy/Evan Berry Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee – Noon – SEC Network
Local college football fans may recognize Breneman’s name, as the Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania native starred at Penn State early in his career before briefly retiring due to medical issues. The former five-star recruit took a year away from the game, serving as a campaign manager during the state senate race, and decided to reunite with his true love of football. One of his best friends happened to play for the Minutemen, so Breneman joined the team a year ago and is now hoping to reach the upside many thought he had with the Nittany Lions. At 6-4, 250 pounds, Breneman is one of the fastest tight ends in the country and has soft hands to impact the vertical passing game. His knees will have to be checked out, but I think he will absolutely be viewed as one of the best prospects at the tight end position in this class when it’s all said and done.
Senior safety Evan Berry had a lot to live up to when he arrived in Knoxville because his older brother Eric was one of the best players to ever play in the SEC and has turned into one of the best safeties in the NFL. He only started three games coming into this season and has been known more for his skills as a kick returner than as a defensive back. Junior safety Micah Abernathy is the starter to watch here, and with 16 tackles he’s one of the leaders in the secondary.
Prediction: After the heartbreaking loss to Florida last week, Tennessee comes back with a vengeance against UMass, but Brenemen gets his touches. I’m calling for five catches, 58 yards, and his first touchdown (which is surprising since he has 24 grabs for 369 yards already) of the season.
5. Arkansas C Frank Ragnow vs. Texas A&M DT Daylon Mack AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas – Noon – ESPN
A three-year starter with good size, strength, and a nasty temperament is always going to fare well in the lead-up to the NFL Draft, and Frank Ragnow is certainly one of those guys. The Razorback stands tall at 6-5, 317 pounds and he can line up at any of the three interior spots in the NFL. Ragnow has a strong anchor with the ability to handle a bull rush with ease. He looks very calm and comfortable in pass protection, showing the ability to read defenses after the snap and process what’s happening in front of him. I’m a fan of his game and see him as a high-floor prospect who should stick in the league for a long time.
From a high-floor player in Ragnow, Daylon Mack is a high-ceiling player on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Mack arrived at Texas A&M as a big-time recruit and earned playing time right away, but has been a career backup thus far for the Aggies. An explosive penetrating tackle who plays with natural leverage and a quick first step, Mack will need to rely on his superior athleticism to win when he’s matched up one-on-one with Ragnow. Mack will be in trouble if he gets locked up in hand-to-hand combat with Ragnow.
Prediction: I think Ragnow wins the battle, but Mack’s Aggies will win the war in a close-fought game between two struggling SEC teams. Ragnow didn’t allow a sack in all of 2016. I expect that to continue, but A&M wins by six.
Draft Buzz
Virginia linebacker Micah Kiser was highlighted by our friend Tony Pauline as a “riser” this week after a big performance against UConn. The senior is in his third year as a starter for the Cavaliers, and he wins with his size and strength. At 240 pounds, Kiser has the bulk to come downhill and thump blockers at the point of attack in the run game. The question with him will be his athletic upside and his play-recognition skills, which is the most important trait of all for a linebacker. I love Kiser’s motor and he’s a fun player to watch.
Small-School Spotlight
I mentioned Tanner Lee’s struggles against Northern Illinois last week, and one of the players at the forefront of that upset win for the Huskies was cornerback Shawun Lurry, who has been on my radar since he earned All-America honors in 2015 when he finished with nine interceptions. Largely undersized at just 5-8, 180 pounds, Lurry’s role at the next level will be limited to playing on the inside and on special teams, but he’s got all of the athletic traits needed to play in the NFL and his ball skills are very good. He won’t be a fit for everyone because of his measurables and he’s not a great tackler (which he will need to fix to play on special teams), but seeing Lurry shine against Nebraska was no surprise to me. Keep an eye out for this kid as the season progresses.
Philly Connection
It’s not often that there’s a player standing out for Alabama who has ties to the Northeast Corridor, but the best prospect on the roster (at least in my eyes) this year grew up not too far from Philadelphia. Defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick was the No. 1 player in the state of New Jersey out of high school. After his family was displaced by Hurricane Irene in August of 2011, Fitzpatrick and his family did everything they could for him to stay at St. Peter’s Prep, and it paid off in a big way. In his hometown of Old Bridge, New Jersey (roughly 90 minutes north of Philadelphia), Fitzpatrick grew up to be a motivated, inspirational, and, most of all, focused kid who is chasing his dream of playing in the NFL. On the field, Fitzpatrick’s instincts, athleticism, and versatility are some of his best traits. He can play any position in the secondary at a high level; and he’s been a starter since his true freshman year in the secondary for Nick Saban, which is not an easy task. He needs to do a better job of finding the ball late downfield and he has some things to clean up in terms of his technique in press coverage. But there is no doubt that Fitzpatrick is one of the 10 best players in the country.
Game Ball
Going into last week’s action, I had heard of Memphis wide receiver Anthony Miller but never had the chance to study him. I was very impressed with his performance against UCLA which the first time I watched him on TV or on tape. Reeling in nine passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns in an upset victory over the visiting Bruins certainly helped. He looked quick, confident over the middle of the field, and reliable at the catch point. I’m excited to dig more into Miller’s tape this year and take a closer look at his quarterback, Riley Ferguson.
Fran Duffy is the producer of “Eagles Game Plan” which can be seen on Saturdays during the season. Be sure to also check out the “Eagle Eye In The Sky” podcast on the Philadelphia Eagles podcast channel on iTunes. Prior to joining the Eagles in 2011, Duffy was the head video coordinator for the Temple University Football team under former head coach Al Golden. In that role, he spent thousands of hours shooting, logging and assisting with the breakdown of the All-22 film from the team’s games, practices and opponents.

I’ll warn you in advance, this is extensive, but here’s a look into who Auburn will be seeing out in Maui this week.
Aloha! Welcome to the Maui Invitational Preview! Your Auburn Tigers will play 3 games in Maui, beginning tomorrow afternoon against Xavier. Let’s start this by taking a look at the bracket and teams participating this year.
Your 2018 @OfficialMauiJim @MauiInv matchups. Is it November yet? #MauiHoops pic.twitter.com/4paMAPlRXL
— Maui Invitational (@MauiInv) July 24, 2018
I reached out to the other teams that Auburn will see out in Maui and got feedback from several of the other schools that will be represented out in Maui. Special thanks goes out to the following people for answering my questions:
Arizona - Ryan Kelapire, AZ Desert Swarm
Gonzaga - Peter Woodburn, The Slipper Still Fits
Iowa State - Levi Stevenson, Wide Right and Natty Lite
Xavier - Bryan Dobney, Banners on the Parkway
You will see some of their thoughts throughout this preview. We’ll go down the list of teams participating in this year’s Maui Invitational, in alphabetical order.
Arizona Wildcats
Record: 3-0
Coach: Sean Miller (10th season)
Results: 90-60 over Houston Baptist, 82-61 over Cal Poly, 79-46 over UTEP
The Wildcats lost a lot of players from last year’s group and are working on integrating the new guys together at Arizona. When it comes to how the new faces are fitting in so far...
RK - “It’s hard to say. Arizona’s first three opponents were Houston Baptist, Cal Poly, and UTEP, so it’s hard to accurately gauge how good they actually are. The talent level is lower this year, though, so this team won’t be as good as last year’s.”
This tournament will definitely be a step up in competition for the Wildcats. They play Iowa State in their quarterfinal matchup on Monday night.
A notable player to keep an eye on for the Wildcats is freshmen Brandon Williams.
RK - “He (Williams) is expected to be one of Arizona’s top two scorers, and he is the most talented player on the team, in my opinion. The craziest part is he has 16 assists and zero turnovers so far. I’m actually really interested to see how he fares against major-conference guards, since Arizona hasn’t faced anything like that yet this season. Arizona needs Williams to play well to have any chance of winning. Nothing would surprise me, though. He’s had his fair share of freshman hiccups early on.”
As far as realistic expectations for Arizona in this tournament...
RK - “There really is no expectation. There are so many new faces and Arizona hasn’t played anyone yet, so they could go 0-3 or 2-1 and no one would be surprised. The overall talent level is lower than usual this year, though, so I tend to believe they’ll go 1-2.”
#9 Auburn Tigers
Record: 3-0
Coach: Bruce Pearl (5th season)
Results: 101-58 over South Alabama, 88-66 over #25 Washington, 103-52 over Mississippi College
Auburn looks to be a trendy pick to finish 3rd in this tournament behind Duke and Gonzaga and for that to happen, it would mean they go 2-1 in Maui. I think that’s honestly a realistic goal for this group and would be quite the accomplishment. The first game against Xavier is most important because it determines what part of the bracket you go onto for the remaining of the tournament. Playing teams in the winners bracket, no matter the results, will help Auburn moving forward. We saw Austin Wiley play well the other night and I would expect him to take another step towards establishing himself as one of the best big men in the SEC this week. Add in the excellent pieces alongside him in the frontcourt plus Jared Harper, Bryce Brown and Samir Doughty playing well and this team can do extraordinary things in this tournament.
#1 Duke Blue Devils
Record: 3-0
Coach: Mike Krzyzewski (39th season)
Results: 118-84 over #2 Kentucky, 94-72 over Army, 84-46 over Eastern Michigan
If you’ve been paying attention to College Basketball this year, then Duke has been the best team so far. They absolutely destroyed Kentucky on opening night behind their outstanding trio of freshmen in Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish. Barrett and Williamson are each averaging 25.3 points a game so far and Reddish has 16.7 points a game. This is the one team Auburn fans have dreamt of facing during their time in Maui and with a win over San Diego State Monday afternoon, paired with an Auburn win over Xavier, and we get this matchup Tuesday night. If the thought of Zion Williamson vs. Austin Wiley doesn’t get you excited for this tournament, then nothing will.
#3 Gonzaga Bulldogs
Record: 3-0
Coach: Mark Few (20th season)
Results: 120-79 over Idaho State, 104-67 over Texas Southern, 94-71 over Texas A&M
I watched a bit of the Gonzaga game on Thursday night against the Aggies and I came away impressed with their depth and interior defense. The Zags blocked 10 shots in their win Thursday night over the Aggies. They have 5 guys averaging in double figures so far and expectations have never been higher in Spokane.
PW - “Undeniably yes. Part of that isn’t exactly our fault. It is hard not to have the highest expectations ever when national pundits casually toss Gonzaga as a Final Four/championship level team. Even in 2017, when the Zags finally made their first Final Four, they opened the season ranked No. 14. This year, we not only had our highest preseason ranking ever, but also received a first place preseason vote for the first time ever. And, leading up to the Killian Tillie injury (recovering from a stress fracture in his ankle), it made sense. The Zags have two first round draft picks in Rui Hachimura and Tillie on the squad, Zach Norvell could easily bolt for the NBA this year as well. Combine that with a senior point guard in Josh Perkins, a senior grad transfer guard in Geno Crandall, and one of the more underrated forwards in the nation in Brandon Clarke, and the hype train took off for the moon. I still haven’t figured out how to get down from up here.”
One matchup that would be a lot of fun to watch would be the battle of the backcourts featuring Auburn’s Jared Harper and Bryce Brown against Gonzaga’s Josh Perkins and Geno Crandall.
PW - “The biggest advantage for Gonzaga going in is the size advantage. Both Perkins and Crandall have a few inches on Harper (although Brown packs on the pounds so that is an even matchup). The wild card for Gonzaga will be the 6’5 sophomore Zach Norvell. He is an aggressive guard who loves flying recklessly to the rim as much as he does shooting a three. Auburn will have to find a way to defend him. Otherwise, this is as balanced of a matchup as you could ask for. Two senior backcourts going at it would be a great thing to watch.”
Illinois Fighting Illini
Record: 1-1
Coach: Brad Underwood (2nd season)
Results: 99-60 over Evansville, lost 88-80 to Georgetown
Brad Underwood took over a program that was quite frankly, a mess in March 2017. The Illini are extremely young and essentially have an entirely new look from last year’s team. There are just 2 seniors/Grad Students on this roster but 6 freshmen. The most notable is Point Guard Ayo Dosunmu, who is averaging 21.5 points a game in his first 2 games in Champaign. We’ll see if this Illini can make any noise in this tournament but they have an extremely difficult first round matchup facing off against Gonzaga on Monday night.
Iowa State Cyclones
Record: 3-0
Coach: Steve Prohm (4th season)
Results: 79-53 over Alabama State, 76-59 over Missouri, 85-73 over Texas Southern
If I had to pick a sleeper team in this field, this would be the team. Last year was a difficult one for the Cyclones, but they have gotten off to a good start this year and have a win over a decent SEC team in Missouri to start their year. They are led by Virginia transfer Marial Shayok who is averaging 20 points a game over his first 3 games.
LS - “So far, he’s (Shayok) been pretty rock steady on offense, and is clearly enjoying the opportunity to play in a high tempo offense. His senior leadership will be crucial in keeping all of the young talent pointed the right direction. He’s shot well from the perimeter, but his favorite shot is the jumper from the elbow. Him being able to create that shot on his own will be a useful tool to have, especially late in the shot clock.”
Iowa State brought in one of the most talented freshmen class in program history and Coach Prohm looks for his guys to gel as they prepare for Maui. They will be without one of their better players in Lindell Wigginton, who is recovered from a sprained foot. Still, the Cyclones have optimism entering this tournament.
LS - “I think Iowa State should have a good chance to take down Arizona in the first round, but beyond that it will depend heavily on how well we shoot the ball from deep. After Arizona would likely be Gonzaga, which is looking like a Final Four contender this season. If the Cyclones get hot from deep, they also have a decent shot to take down the Zags, but not having Lindell’s scoring pop is going to hurt in that one. Going 2-1 in Maui would make every Cyclone fan happy, but even going 1-2 while play Gonzaga and whoever the third opponent is close would be good enough to feel solid about going forward.”
San Diego State Aztecs
Record: 2-0
Coach: Brian Dutcher (2nd season)
Results: 76-60 over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 103-64 over Texas Southern
The Aztecs have 5 guys averaging in double figures but they haven’t been tested yet. That changes tomorrow when they get the unenviable task of facing Duke in the first round of this tournament. An NCAA Tournament team last year, this is a team that is known for priding itself on defense. The Aztecs scored 9 points a game more last year than the previous season and we’ll see if that carries over to this year. Their leading scorer through 2 games is senior guard Devin Watson, averaging 17 points a game.
Xavier Musketeers
Record: 2-1
Coach: Travis Steele (1st season)
Results: 82-69 over IUPUI, 91-85 over Evansville, lost 77-68 to Wisconsin
I’ll have much more on Xavier tomorrow but the Musketeers are coming off a tough loss to Wisconsin leading into this tournament. They have several guys who can challenge Auburn’s big guys. They’ve also been prone to giving up a lot of points so far this year so how they play defense against Auburn’s fast-paced explosive offense will be a key in the result of this game.
Finally, I asked each of the participating writers how they saw a potential matchup with Auburn going down. Here are their thoughts.
RK (Arizona) - “Not very well. Arizona is still learning how to play together, and I just don’t think they’re ready to beat a team like Auburn yet. At the end of the year that could be different, but they still have a lot to sort out.”
PW (Gonzaga) - “These two teams are borderline carbon copies of each other, so, easy way out, I have no idea. Auburn is fantastic at offensive rebounding. So is Gonzaga. The Zags can shoot from long range, so can Auburn. I think that Auburn’s defense has a leg up on Gonzaga, especially when it comes to intensity, pressure, and forcing turnovers. I think that Gonzaga’s offense is better than Auburn, and I’m not sure how they can effectively stop all of the weapons the Zags employ. If the Zags play smart basketball and withstand the defensive pressure, I think they eke out a win here. However, if Auburn is able to dictate the game through its defense, that is going to make it very difficult for Gonzaga to put any sort of pressure on the Tigers. Therefore, I’ll just say it’ll be the first tie in Maui Invitational history!”
LS (Iowa State) - “This one would be a really fun game to watch, as both teams are very good on both ends of the floor. If Iowa State was at full strength, I’d probably give the slight edge to Iowa State, but without Lindell’s scoring punch and Cam Lard’s borderline-automatic double double, the Cyclones would likely face an uphill battle that would require them to get hot from outside to have a shot at taking down the Tigers.”
BD (Xavier) - “I’m an optimist by nature, but after seeing you guys run Washington off the floor, I am not holding out a lot of hope. I think X will show better than against Wisconsin, but I also think Auburn is a better team than Wisconsin. 86-75 Auburn. Please beat Duke.”
Stay tuned for more Maui Invitational coverage including my full Q&A with Xavier’s Bryan Dobney, from Banners on the Parkway, tomorrow morning. War Eagle!

THIS WEEK IN SCHADENFREUDE, where Chip Kelly replaces every coach
It’s your weekly tour of the most infuriated in college football internet.
The ninth week of the college football season was busy. It was especially so during the middle shift, when a bunch of games ended within a half-hour and featured losses by No. 2 Penn State, No. 4 TCU, No. 16 Michigan State, and No. 17 USF. Also losing were a couple of mediocre SEC teams with big fanbases.
It’s This Week in Schadenfreude, Week 9, your tour of the angriest in CFB internet.
Texas A&M (lost 35-14 to Mississippi State)
This is your moment, TexAgs message boards.
This poster has a suggestion to replace the embattled Kevin Sumlin:

The rationale:
He couldn't be worse than what we have now.... Well, at least it would be entertaining.
This comment’s not made entirely in jest. It’s noted that Manziel is interested in coaching college football. Ironclad plan, IMO.
One suggestion is to simply replace the Texas A&M logo on the Aggies’ helmets with a different illustration:
Suggestions for new helmet decal? Mine is ole sarge sucking his toe
We are a joke. A consistent cursed joke. We don't learn from mistakes and continue to make them. Administrators, coaches, decisions, mishaps. All a joke. Notice I don't include players. It's not there fault. They are persuaded to come here and they are just following orders. I think a decal of ole sarge sucking his toe is perfectly acceptable to replace the ATM on our helmets. It's very fitting. Like i always say....Aggie is....is Aggie does!
Some other expressions of postgame sadness:
Everything sucks and I want to die
I will have no liver to donate to our smoothies after tonight.
More beer for my tears.
Is someone calling for this team to hire Chip Kelly?
Yes, and it’s time the luxury box elites stop ignoring the former NFL head coach.
Chip Kelly - it's time
For everyone here sipping their scotch and smoking cigars cackling about hiring Morris - NO. ITS time to bring in a proven WINNER and get **** done!!! Get this man now
Florida (lost 42-7 to Georgia, then fired Jim McElwain)
The loss to Georgia was bad, but everyone knew what was going to happen before it did. We’ll fast-forward to Sunday, when the Gators finally cut loose McElwain.
The Gators are the preeminent open job in the country. There’s going to be lots of interest in hot, young, up-and-coming candidates, such as this guy:
Les miles
why is les miles not being considered. He's won in the sec and has won a national championship. He has proven himself unlike a lot of these coaches being named. We took risks on mac and will so why not go with a guy that knows the sec and what it takes to win
Another unique idea here:
Is anyone else calling for this team to hire Chip Kelly?
Too many to count. These are just from the AD’s mentions on Sunday afternoon:
I want Chip Kelly at Florida. Make it happen @ScottStricklin
— Scoochie (@HAleYeAhh) October 29, 2017
Get me Chip Kelly @ScottStricklin
— JD (@JustinDowell2) October 29, 2017
@ScottStricklin love the move today. No need to waste anymore time with this nonsense. Please call Chip Kelly ASAP!

Tennessee (lost 29-26 at Kentucky and didn’t fire Butch Jones)
Vols fans are trying to figure out if they, too, can get out of a coaching buyout by finding their coach might’ve said a falsehood in public. The good people at VolNation.com, regulars on this feature this year, wonder:
Can't we dig up some lies that Butch has said?
Surely he's told a lie or to while here. What about lying a hot dog bbq or something like Pearl did? Anything would be fine.
“I remwmber him saying he would win games,” one person responds.
“Best staff in the country,” another says.
Another poster wants to fire athletic director John Currie, who was just hired, because he’s waited too long to fire Jones. But another poster thinks Currie’s playing a long game:
Suspicion on Currie
I’ve been thinking through some of this stuff. Everyone is focused on John Currie firing Butch. He could be using this time to hook the next coach and could very well have that guy ready by the time Butch is dismissed. Which would actually be pretty clever seeing as how we would be examining his every move. Instead, the fans are focused on the “fire Butch” movement week to week. There is more to this story than meets the eye. I think he is using this time right now to land his guy. An AD’s legacy is always hinges on a big hire. He’s up to more than we know. Just a thought.
What’s the truth?
This next thing’s from before the Kentucky game, but I’m including it anyway. Here’s a thread about Florida State’s national championship-winning coach maybe wanting the Tennessee job. (He doesn’t.) Let’s follow along:
Rumors of Jimbo Fisher wants the Tennessee Job
Things are heating up down there in Tallahassee. Rumors swirling about Jimbo wants in on Tennessee. What are your thoughts?
Is that a joke? Maybe. I’m not certain. But these are serious replies:
“No Thanks.”
“No way. Jimbo has a far easier task in the ACC than in the SEC. fake news.”
“No thank you. I'd rather have Scott Frost. If Jimbo can't win with the talent they have at FSU, I doubt he can at Tennessee.”
“Gruden > Fisher”
Is someone calling for this team to hire Chip Kelly?
You know it.
@John_Currie DO YOUR JOB AND GO GET CHIP KELLY

Penn State (lost 39-38 at Ohio State)
At Rivals’ Blue and White Illustrated message board, one poster was sure that pollsters’ ANTI-PENN STATE BIAS would plummet the Nits down the rankings.
Here's How IT IS.
Any other team would fall 1 or 2 places, but because it's us look for a huge screwing and drop.
Penn State fell five places in the AP Poll, from No. 2 to 7. Previous top-five teams to lose games this year fell six spots (FSU), seven spots (Ohio State), 10 spots (USC), nine spots (Oklahoma), and six spots (Clemson).
Someone’s thoughts on offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, whose team just scored 38 points against an elite defense and is averaging nearly 40 per game:
Franklin is the Guy for PSU but Moorhead's Offense Sucks
he sucks.
Here’s a, uh, unique comparison for James Franklin:
Is CJF College Football's version of Dusty Baker?
GREAT locker room guy, players love him, teams have good chemistry.
Also a lousy tactician without that instinct to know how to close a game out. This is now the 6th example of such a game in his Penn State career (Michigan 2014, Maryland 2014, Illinois 2014, Northwestern 2015, USC 2016, Ohio State 2017). Vanderbilt's losses to Tennessee in 2011, South Carolina in 2012, and Ole Miss in 2013 are examples from earlier in his career.
Last night looked painfully like the Reds 2012 NLDS loss to the Giants. It was RIGHT THERE! And we didn't seize the moment.
This person’s super mad about a former Pitt coach being on FOX’s on-site studio show, as he is every single week of the season:
Dave Wannstedt
Can we lead a charge to get this know-nothing marble mouth, PSU hater kicked off BTN. I mean really, he's the first guy to high five all the buckeye faithful????. Why is a no-nothing complete idiot Pitt wannabe, on Fox and BTN????? I absolutely hate this guy, he's dumb as a rock and pretty much always wrong. He's a homer for anything anti-Penn State. I cannot stand that man...................
At SB Nation’s Black Shoe Diaries, this commenter took the result well:
I am done watching Penn State.
Let’s be real if we don’t get into the CFP which we won’t now. There is no point anymore. You know why no one believes in us? Because we always do this shit. We look promising and then drop a game. No excuse when we were up by 15. The football god’s gifted us a special team TD and a nice fumble. The refs were decent. Our defense simply let us down. We can never just get it done. The defense blows a 15 point lead. Looked very amateur and Trace over threw it how many times? And the oline sucks. Fuck this team Fuck all the high hopes because they never get it done. Fuck football. No use in getting worked upover a silly fucken game with pampered athletes chasing a ball. That’s what dogs do
Is someone calling for this team to hire Chip Kelly?
Not that I could find. But less than two years ago, this guy was!
@SandyB_PSUAD Fire James Franklin. Lets get Chip...

We all reach this again at one time or another.
Florida State (lost 35-3 to Boston College)
The Seminoles are 2-5. Their season is lost.
Boston College isn’t that bad. But losing to B.C. is still a come-to-Jesus moment for a lot of fans. See Louisville fans after the Eagles got their team a couple weeks earlier:

SB Nation presents, “A Series of Florida State Fans Publicly Reckoning with the Point that Their Team Just Lost to Boston College.”

Is someone calling for this team to hire Chip Kelly?
Yes.
One fan’s list of Jimbo Fisher replacements:
Patterson Petersen Dabo Patrino Harbaugh Sumlin Chip Kelly (coming soon)
just to name a few...
Fisher’s buyout is roughly $40 million.
