Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Milwaukee Jersey Worn During His First Two NBA Seasons Debuts at Heritage

One season later, he was the league’s scoring leader; the Bucks swept the Baltimore Bullets in the NBA Finals; and Abdul-Jabbar was named the Most Valuable Player for the regular season and in the Finals — of which served as prelude to a legend, as both a Buck and a Los Angeles Laker.

For the first time, Heritage offers in the Nov. 16-18 Fall Sports Catalog Auction a road Milwaukee Bucks jersey worn by Abdul-Jabbar during those historic seasons when the center snagged a league championship and a scoring title — each, the first of many to follow. Photo-matched by multiple third-party experts to crucial moments throughout Abdul-Jabbar’s days as a legend-in-the-making, the jersey serves as a thrilling offering in an auction abounding with palpable reminders of historic achievements and magical memories shaped by titanic athletes.

Resolution Photomatching confirms it was at least worn during an April 1971 Western Conference Finals versus the Lakers and an April 1971 NBA Finals game against the Bullets. Sports Investors Authentication turned up likely matches to several regular season and post-season games, dating from March 18, 1970, to the Game Four title-clinching contest against the Bullets on April 30, 1971. It is graded a MEARS A10 and also comes with a letter of provenance from Patrick McBride, a former Bucks equipment manager.

The jersey is joined in this auction by the 1969 Look Magazine College All-America Basketball Team ring presented to Alcindor in 1969. It hails from The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Collection.

Here, as well, is more jewelry awarded to another pro-basketball great in 1969: the NBA Championship ring Bill Russell received when his Boston Celtics won their 11th title in 13 seasons. Auctioned by the two-time NCAA champ and Olympic gold medalist shortly before his death last year, this was the final title ring of Russell’s storied 13-year run as the Celtics’ center (and, for a while, player-coach), earned when the Boston basketball squad entered the Finals as underdogs to their arch-nemeses Lakers (featuring Wilt Chamberlain, natch) and emerged victorious after seven heated hardwood tussles.

It’s a wonder to behold: ESPN once marveled at the “colossal jewel” at its center and noted how “BOSTON CELTICS and WORLD CHAMPIONS are separated by the year: 1969, Russell’s last as a professional.” The words “WILLIAM” and “RUSSELL” are etched on opposite sides of the prized piece.

“With the opening of the basketball season upon us, we are delighted to offer these incredible pieces from the greats of the game,” says Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. “And it doesn’t stop with these two pieces, either: Here are Michael Jordan’s 1984 Olympic game-worn Converse sneakers and one of the nicest examples of one of the rarest cards, a Wilt Chamberlain 1961 Fleer rookie bearing a Mint 9 signature. This auction is one hell of a tip-off to the new season.”

Among the auction’s other top tops, you’ll find a 1958 Los Angeles Dodgers white home flannel that throws nothing but heat: Sandy Koufax’s game-worn jersey dating to the team’s first year in the City of Angeles. The Left Hand of God also signed the gamer, into which Rawlings stitched “Koufax 58” below the manufacturer’s label.

Koufax was the first three-time winner of the award named for Cy Young, who is represented in this event by a card that needs little pitching: a twice-signed 1893 cabinet card from the hard-throwing righty’s collection. The card was made by Pifer & Becker, among Cleveland’s most renowned photo studios, which counted among its clients Young’s Cleveland Spiders. Only six of their cabinets have been to auction.

“This relic is an absolute unicorn,” says Heritage’s Executive Vice President of Sports, Joe Orlando. “The provenance is remarkable, as is the rarity and quality. There has been a massive surge in the popularity of signed cards, but signed cards from this era are so few and far between.”

There are the modern icons and gems here, too, among them: card No. 41 of the 100 signed Tom Brady rookies from the Playoff Contenders series issued in 2000; the only 2017 Panini Contenders Patrick Mahomes II Super Bowl Ticket Autograph rookie card, graded BGS Mint 9 and Auto 9; and the one-of-one 2011 Bowman Chrome Bryce Harper Prospect Autograph-Superfractor, graded BGS Gem Mint 9.5 and Auto 10. They’re the chase cards of which young collectors’ dreams are made.

So were these once: Topps’ limited run of cards made for the Venezuelan market and aimed at that country’s profoundly passionate baseball fans. They existed for a short time — seven years, on and off, between 1959 and 1968 — and looked like their American counterparts, save for the darker, rougher and less shiny stock. The numerous websites devoted to the subject all say the same thing: You almost have to hold the cards to tell the differences. But they are decidedly rare, and the more than 110 offerings in this auction — including a 1959 Venezuela Topps Mickey Mantle graded PSA Excellent 5 and a 1960 Venezuela Topps Carl Yastrzemski Sport Magazine Rookie Star) graded PSA Excellent+ 5.5 — are decidedly impressive, especially since finding these cards in a high grade is challenging, at best.

This offering, though, is impossible to find anywhere else: a photograph of Babe Ruth he signed on June 28, 1947, and gifted to a young ballplayer named Paul DeKovessey. Ruth had been diagnosed with throat cancer the year before, and Paul’s mother was the Yankees legend’s nurse. When Ruth signed that photo, he was undergoing experimental treatments at New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital using an anti-cancer drug made from brewer’s yeast. This photo comes from the DeKovessey family’s collection.

Here’s another family heirloom with a New York baseball legend connection: Early 1960s Jackie Robinson Used Los Angeles Brooklyn Dodgers equipment bag, which he gifted to a would-be Dodger during a 1964 tryout — in this case, our consignor’s father.

Dodgers scouting director Al Campanis invited 19-year-old Mike Mathwig to a Dodgers Rookie Stars of Tomorrow tryout on June 23, 1964, at John Galvin Field near Los Angeles. The teen carried with him a glove, his shoes and a uniform. Robinson saw the kid without an equipment bag and offered him his — a blue Dodgers bag upon which was stenciled one of the sport’s most famous numbers, 42. Before becoming a high school coach, Mathwig played eight years in the minors, including six seasons in the sun as a Dodgers prospect. In time, the bag made its way to Mathwig’s garage, where it sat for decades until his son-in-law discovered it in 2013. Mathwig was asked where it came from. His response, according to a letter provided by his daughter and the bag’s consignor, Sarah McKay: “Oh yeah, Jackie gave that to me.”

This auction is rife with stories like this — footnotes deserving of whole chapters. Look no further than the bat Ty Cobb signed in 1947 for Juanita Jennings, the mother of Babe Ruth’s daughter Dorothy. For decades, Dorothy was introduced as Ruth’s adopted daughter with his first wife, Helen. But in her 1988 biography My Dad, The Babe, Dorothy revealed she was, in fact, his biological daughter — the result of Ruth’s affair with Jennings in 1920. As the catalog notes, Cobb knew nothing of this backstory, only that Jennings was a close friend of Ruth’s.

From the world of horse racing comes another marvel with a backstory provided by Hall of Fame jockey Ángel Tomás Cordero Jr., the first Puerto Rican inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame: his “magic saddle,” which he used to win eight Triple Crown races. As Cordero says in a lengthy missive accompanying the saddle, which he signed, it was made specially for the jockey in 1978 and was first used “in winning the 1978 Stuyvesant Handicap on Seattle Slew in what was the last race of his career.” He used it until 2020, by which time, Cordero writes, it had become “the most famous saddle in horse racing history.”

OSHA Relations Committee Article in 2023 Tower Times Volume 2

The OSHA Relations Committee reelected me, Justin Miller, Vice President of ET Tower, LLC & Business Development Executive for Ontivity, as the 2023 Chairman of OSHA Relations.

“I am proud to serve the OSHA Relations Committee. I am very grateful to have such an amazing group of people to help provide a continuing source of information to NATE members and the telecommunications industry regarding OSHA, industry standards and best practices to enhance safety, reduce incidents, and deliver a platform for a more effective workforce.” - Justin Miller

NATE Director of Safety, Health & Compliance, Kathy Stieler provided the committee with an update on NATE’s pursuit to have a seat on the ANSI/ASSP A10 Committee. We are awaiting the A10 committee response.

Don Doty provided the committee with an update on ANSI/ASSP A10.48 revisions. Over 120 comments were submitted to the A10.48 Committee. Comments are being addressed and progress is being made as quickly as possible.

JP Jones and I provided the committee with updates on the NATE-OSHA-FCC Partnership (OSP), the OSP Steering Team has developed three task teams.

Data & Research Task Team – is tasked with creating buckets to collect and articulate the data for analytics and mining of data that has been submitted.

Editing Task Team – takes information from the data and research task team and drafts Hazard Recognition Icons and further defines the purpose of the icon.

3. Communication Task Team – is tasked with the public distribution means and methods, along with the design of the icons for what it looks like, color, fonts, graphic art, etc.

The current task is to develop an Energy Wheel of Hazard Recognition Icons, within the Hazard Recognition Icons we will establish STCKY “Stuff that can kill you” to help bring the communication industry a well-defined training tool to enhance safety and improve data collection in the future.

NATE STAR Initiative data was reviewed, and plans are being developed on how to better educate and inform the NATE members with guidance and best practices to enhance safety programs. We highly encourage all NATE members to complete the application for the NATE STAR Initiative Program. We have complied the 2021-2022 data for our NATE members to help provide transparency of the data collected.

The committee will also be taking NATE’s Industry Standards, Regulations & Safety Resources Document and assigning the part number section from the NATE STAR Initiative Audit form and correlating back to which industry standards and regulations better guide the employers and the auditors.

OSHA Relations has also developed another task team titled, Hoisting Grip Member Advisory lead by Kathy Stieler. Additional task team members will be Richard Cullum, Sheri O’Dell-Deuer, Joey Deuer, Jeremy Buckles, Cameron Swanson, Jeff Pettit, Miles Mellor, and JP Jones. The team will provide guidance and perform research that relates to Hoisting Grip(s) and how they are used in our industry. Expect to see more information very soon.

The OSHA Relations Committee is also responsible for the task team titled, Rigging Training Standard (RTS). This task team is hard at work developing a deliverable for the industry. The RTS document is framed much like the recently revised Climber/Rescuer Training Standard (CRTS). We hope to have a more in-depth report for the Summer Conference.

Lastly, the OSHA Relations Committee is always looking for feedback and questions that can inspire the forward progress of safety and standards. I highly encourage our non-members and NATE members to reach out to our committee for clarity or guidance. ●

DUQUESNE TOPS ST. BONAVENTURE AT HOME IN A CLASH OF ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE WOMEN'S SQUADS

After she was honored for breaking the Duquesne Dukes' Women's Basketball record for the most three-pointers in a game, with 11 at Dayton on January 14th, guard Tess Myers celebrated that accolade by scoring 11 overall points at home inside the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse against the visiting Bonnies of St. Bonaventure. But the player of the game was her teammate, and fellow Guard, Megan McConnell. McConnell recorded 17 points, and 13 rebounds, as she played all 40 minutes of the Dukes' 76-67 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over the Bonnies. The win ups Duquesne's record to 9-8 overall, and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10. The photos were taken on behalf of Pittverse Community.

Should GMU have a collegiate football team?

George Mason University is a large D1 commuter school in Fairfax, VA. There are almost 40 thousand students every year. The school offers collegiate soccer, baseball, softball, track, etc. as well as club volleyball, soccer, football, etc. GMU is mostly a basketball school, but the team has not been to a championship since 2011 and has gotten as far as the final four once in 2006. After GMU joined the A10 in 2013, they have not won a conference championship since.

Some argue that bringing a football team would generate money for Mason. Mason is one of the largest universities in the nation to not have a football team. In 2021 GMU was the runner-up for the national championship in the National Club Football Association. GMU also leads the association in post-season awards with six.

However, the arguments against having a football team are much more sound. First, there is no room for a stadium. GMU is in Fairfax and is close to DC, the campus is already cramped. When a new baseball/cricket field was announced, the pushback was so huge that the operation was canceled. The new field would have gotten rid of parking lots and as a commuter school, lots of parking space is necessary. It would also take hundreds of thousands of dollars to start the football team and keep it up. GMU would have to climb through the ranks before they even came close to making money. GMU is a research institution first and foremost, the money going into Mason should go towards that, not more athletics.

Cernan & Snoopy. Astronaut Eugene Cernan & Snoopy take questions at a press conference for Apollo 10, 1969. ‘Snoopy’ became the nickname for the Lunar Module of the May 1969 mission. A10 had a Peanuts theme as the Command Module was nicknamed Charlie Brown. In 2019, astronomers located the Snoopy LM, as it currently orbits the Sun once every 381 days. The spacecraft was jettisoned after Cernan & Tom Stafford flew it within 9 miles of the lunar surface in a dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 moon landing in July of that year. What an incredible piece of space history.

So this week on: I'm a fucking idiot

I'm looking at the A10 wikipedia page because I'm procrastinating and somehow ended up there, and they have that map that's colored in based on what state has a school in the conference.

And I'm looking and I'm like "what school is in Indiana??" Because I know the A10 conference SJU is part of that conference, UMass is part of that conference, my two best friends go to two other schools in that conference, what school is in fucking Indiana??

It wasn't Indiana. It was Missouri. It was St. Louis University.

Part 2

Ansgar crossed his legs beneath him and leaned back in the chair, the leather creaking in protest. Considering, he folded his hands in his lap, tented his thumbs and rubbed them slowly together. In spite of his seemingly calm exterior, within his mind was churning… burning, a combination of annoyance and anger and what… fear? Yes, of course, fear.

His reputation was one of perfection. Not a single client unsatisfied. Not a single claim on a single contractor’s bond. If there’s a problem… he fixes it. Yet, here was a woman who, as she put it, was pleading for someone to do something about the condition of the building that he… that his company built.

Resolved, he bent forward, elbows on knees, and stared hard at the girl. With every ounce of sincerity he could muster, he said, “You won’t have to wait any longer, Froken Lindberg. I am…,” he paused, “mortified, to say the least that you had to go to the lengths you did just to get an audience with someone at my company who could remedy the situation.”

“Well,” she countered, her voice wavering, “you should be.”

Ansgar let forth with a bark of laughter. Not condescending laughter, mind you, but true and honest surprise. He smiled, that time the grin reaching his eyes. “Yes, I should be,” he affirmed. And with that, he stood, removed his suit jacket and crossed to the closet. He shrugged into his blue logoed Carhartt coat, flung his tool belt over his shoulder, and fished out an aluminum clipboard case.

“What are you….?”

He whirled. “We’re leaving, Froken Lindberg,” he clipped. “Now.”

“Yes,” she stood, clutching her papers to her chest, “but… where are we going?”

Ansgar brightened. “To the Opera House, where else? I need to see this sprinkler system for myself, I think. I am an engineer, you know. I have some experience with fire protection design. Maybe I can sort this today for you… and,” he shrugged, “you know, perhaps get the Prima Donna off your back.”

“To avoid the riff-raff,” Ansgar nodded with his eyes glued to the door that led to the lobby, “out there, we’ll go out this way.” A tilt of his head signaled behind him.

That was the moment she saw it, the same moment that he lifted his hand to the wall behind his desk. He palmed with a swipe to reveal an invisible door. The seam blended in so nicely with the built-in bookcase that Joline missed it. A reader lit up in recognition of his touch or fingerprints or body temperature, Jo couldn’t know, and the door popped open with a click.

Jo raised her eyebrows at him and the hidden gadget. “Such technology, such toys.”

Ansgar huffed a deep sound of proud amusement. “Correction. All the technology. All the toys.” And with another dip of his head, he directed her through.

“Mischief managed.”

“Pardon?”

Jo grinned inwardly. “Something my nephews told me. From their favorite book. This—“ She pushed her hands out in front of her into a long marble corridor, gesturing before her. Uniform doors led off to other offices or conference rooms, she guessed, but the hallway seemed part of a typical office building. “This feels very, ‘I solemnly swear I am up to no good.’ Making a secluded break from… well, whatever you got going on back there.”

“Ah, the riff-raff, the circus… The press can be a blessing and a curse,” he took the lead down the bland corridor. “I use them when absolutely necessary and avoid them at all cost at all other times.”

“And you needed them today? Why?”

His shoulders adjusted under his jacket in a wave of… disgust? Stress? “The vultures smell blood. They’re chasing a story, an exclusive.” As soon as the press release published online of his return as acting CEO in an internet blast, the swarm came flocking in.

“And what’s that? The story? The exclusive?”

Ansgar effectively ducked and avoided her question by pointing with two very straight and very long fingers to his right through another door. “To the carpark, and my car. You’ll show me the improvements that need doing at the theatre, and we’ll come back here to schedule the work.”

Where he led with a steady assured gait, Joline followed. Out of necessity, more than anything else. She met him stride for stride, nearly, thanks to the three inch Louboutins. “Your lobby and lounge, so much like the opera house,” she commented to draw attention away from her unintentional pry. “Patrons and tourists parade through to gawk at the structure. Is that your stamp then?”

As they entered the covered garage, Ansgar fished his key fob from his pocket and clicked the button for his car. His brand new red Tesla Roadster chirped in response, and he nearly purred at the familiar sound. “I’ll assume responsibility for that, Froken Lindberg,” he replied proudly.

One of her eyebrow arched skyward. “Well,” she countered, “despite all the technical issues,” she intoned to knock him down a peg or two, “ticket sales are up. Season subscriptions increased six, close to seven, percent over last year. Audiences are responding to the slated new season, the season I put together.”

“I’ve been away. Missed most of the current series, I’m afraid,” Ansgar closed the door with a quiet ‘click’ after ensuring his guest comfortably in her seat. He strode quickly around the back, opened his own door and folded himself within. Continuing, he said, “I didn’t give up my series ticket, though. Seat A10 is still mine.”

“Hm,” the woman huffed. She crossed her legs, and Ansgar wondered if she was purposefully or subconsciously showing him the crimson underside of her shoes. “I hate empty seats.”

Ansgar shrugged. “It’s paid for, what do you care?” He hand-over-handed the wheel, expertly winding the roadster between the cement abutments and into the daylight of the open garage door.

“It’s not all about the money, Herr Martinsson,” she retorted. “You of all people should know – for everyone involved, it’s more about the audience, and their response.”

Ansgar held in a chuckle. He knew perfectly well.

Ansgar tipped his head back, following the line of the woman’s pointed finger. “There?” Ansgar, standing atop a folding aluminum scaffold, pointed as well.

“That’s where it went off the first time.” She called up to him.

“Got it.” Ansgar nodded sagely, glancing down at her. He pulled his hard hat off and looked up again as he pushed his hand through his hair. “I actually think I see the problem, Froken Lindberg; and you would not believe how simple it - and the solution - actually is.”

Her eyes went wide. “You do?”

He nodded again, looking down at her. “I do. And when I find out who erred here, heads are going to roll, I assure you. However,” he paused, “I think you, too, may be putting some folks on the chopping block here.”

“What… what’s the problem?”

“Kick off your shoes and come up here.” He reached down. “Take my hand.”

He was somewhat surprised that she did, actually… toe out of the Louboutins, take his hand. Her hand felt warm and smoothly calloused in his. The hands of a woman who, literally, had her fingers in every aspect of an operation. She gripped him tightly, pleasantly, as he heaved her up - moving his hand to her shoulder as he steadied her on the scaffold. “Good, yeah?”

“Yeah,” she replied, quickly, gripping one of the iron supports. “What’s the problem?”

“There,” he shone the beam of his torch at one of the pendent heads. See the colour of that glass bulb in there?”

She nodded. “It’s green.”

“It should be purple or better yet, black,” he explained. “That head you have there is only rated for temperatures of up to about ninety three degrees. A purple bulb is rated for about 182 degrees, black about 227. These heads are the wrong rating for this type of environment, you see?. All these hot stage lights… the ambient air around the heads gets too hot, bursts the bulbs and….”

“Sploosh,” she demonstrated, her fingers flaring out.

“Sploosh. Precisely.”

“Okay, okay,” she said, “but… why would I be upset at my own employees? Where’s our fault if your sprinkler guy put in the wrong heads?”

Ansgar pointed. “There,” he pointed with the beam of his flashlight, that time on the finished underside of the house right loge. “You’ve a set of properly rated heads sticking down there, all right and good for the designed use, but – it also looks as if there have been some modifications of the original design.”

She squinted. “I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Ask your lighting designer what I’m talking about. She’s bracketed in a brand new lighting pipe there, clamped some eight-inch non-LED fresnels upon it, and did so in a space not originally meant for lighting to be in the first place.” He looked down at her, his lips twisted, a shrug in his shoulders. “First of all, one should never ever hang incandescent lights directly beneath a sprinkler head no matter what the rating – and second of all… isn’t it against fire code to hang lights of a certain temperature so close to a seating area?”

Jo peered up into the face of her inspector, reading between the words he spoke, between the lines of his narrative. “These modifications…,” she pointed over her shoulder to the new problem, “they’re dangerous?”

Ansgar nodded, “Without the proper clearance. There’s code for safety.”

“And if I’m to understand you correctly,” she led, feeling the unease sink into her stomach, “this was deliberate?”

“It appears that way.” He landed the statement as delicately as he could, but it appeared that someone tread the path of sabotage.

The woman popped down off the scaffolding to step downstage where she’d left her file. “The first incident report came after last season.” She shifted through her pages, trying to locate the very report she referred. She’d studied them many times over in the months since the trouble began. Checklist after checklist signed off by a designer and two techs invalidated by one engineer review.

If only someone from Martinsson Construction had come sooner…

Despite the skirt she wore, she plopped down to spread the papers out in front of her. “Work orders, they came through but stated that there was nothing wrong.” She slid the signed sheet along the stage floor towards Ansgar. “’These things happen…’ they said. ‘Accidents’ this one contractor told me. That’s why I came to you… well, Weissing.”

It wasn’t panic she felt. It wasn’t fear or hysteria. It was annoyance. Disbelief. Perhaps a little anger thrown in, but she’d never let anyone see that. Instead she put her head into solving this plague on her tenure as house manager. Fix it. Fix it for good and move forward. “How long to sort all this?”

The engineer still had his head stuck up in the mess of lighting, sorting out just how to fix it, what safety measures he could employ to see this didn’t happen again. He called down, his voice raised for the distance. “Not long. An afternoon, at best.”

“Herr Martinsson, who would have the most to gain for doing this?” She stopped shuffling to look upstage where he stood when hee’d climbed down from the scaffolding some minutes later. The very image of aristocratic bad boy. Starched white shirt beneath a work jacket, topped with a hard hat. The leather and metal work belt slung around his slim waist appealed to her for reasons far beyond her understanding. The contrast between the expensively tailored, highly groomed man and the hands-on worker made for a gorgeous picture.

“I can’t answer that, Froken, not without knowing the key players.” He picked up some of her pages to look at some of the names, to see if he recognized the names of contractors that missed the obvious. The sodding theifs.

She sat in silence rolling the problem over in her head. Could it be a lack of education or knowledge in her trusted employees? Or was it a case of foul intentions? She didn’t want to believe it of her people. When she reigned her thoughts in from solving the problem, she glanced up again.

A furrowed brow knitted over his long nose, he chewed the corner of his lip as he concentrated on the work orders and the checklists. His hand worked at the base of his neck, tracing a v shape below is Adam’s apple. A strangely attractive self-soothing gesture as his focus zeroed in.

“May I—“ she intruded on his reading. She laughed at herself and her predicament of being trapped on the floor. “May I please borrow a hand? I…uh…got myself into a spot of trouble.” She gestured at her seated position on the floor and reached up for him. “I’m in danger of showing my talent for very unladylike positions.” She continued laughing at herself and the challenges she put herself in.

“Oh, yes, of course,” he offered his hand to heave her up off the floor.

“Thank you. I forget… I’m always back here for with the tech guys, building, moving, lifting. This,” she ran her hands along her skirt, “this doesn’t do me any favors.” She tipped her head back looking up into the fly loft. “How long can I impose on you, Herr Martinsson? May I ask you to survey some other problem areas?”

PT. I : THE FOUNDING OF EXPANSION.

The doctor credited as the “discoverer” of the H-42 gene was named Edward Holmes.

A man of wealth and fortune from birth, Holmes was not a man who pursued a career in medicine for the wealth, but strictly because of an interest in the human body, and the desire to understand it. When finally he earned his degree, using his family’s connections and money, he established a medical research company based out of NYC known as Expansion – a business whose goal was to wok towards cures for everything, from cancers and dementia to the common cold, and for the first twelve years, this was their focus.

In the dead of winter in 1972, however, a fascination was birthed in an alleyway in Brooklyn, where, on a walk through the city, the doctor stumbled upon a man able to produce flames at will: able to engulf himself in the glow of an inferno without burning an inch of skin. this man, Harrison, was far from the first to harbor such a power; he was just the one unfortunate enough to cross Holmes’ path. Homeless, lacking family and in much need of food, he agreed to come with Holmes to the lab so that he may be studied in return for meals and shelter. It was a simple arrangement in the beginning: in the early 70s, genetic testing was in its infancy, and so Holmes was limited to the basic vital testings and questions regarding family history — a profile that would later be perfected, with family trees and records a primary source of tracking down test subjects.

Three months was the initial, agreed-upon deal: three months of poking and prodding, three months of Harrison sleeping in a warm bed and eating three square meals a day. This timeline, however, slowly became steadily increased; with his status as a loner, jobless, Harrison was easy enough to manipulate into staying in Expansion, the money pilling up in exchange for more and more of his life, DNA, access to his power. While he was free to roam in the first few months, to leave as he wished, after a full year of Holmes’ experiments, Harrison found himself trapped – locked away in a cell in a sub-level of the lab, where he resided for years, slowly reduced to a shell of his former self.

From Harrison, an obsession was wrought, though cut short after an escape attempt led to Harrison’s death. Holmes, desperate to continue and expand upon his research, mourned Harrison’s death, though solely because of the loss of potential - not seeing him as a life wasted, but as a lost subject. Holmes isolated himself during this period of “mourning,” pouring over his data in his private studies in Expansion’s headquarters, and it was during this time that he began to devise a plan to further his studies.

Holmes was not alone in his endeavors; though he was the only person in contact with Harrison for the first year, in 1974, Holmes recruited Martin Brock and Kevin Wilson, two ex-classmates who he believed possessed the same qualities as himself, the same “drive” (and the same disregard for human life).

In 1981, a year after Harrison’s death, Holmes approached Brock and Wilson, and told them of his plans for a new research project he had dubbed “The Enlightenment Project.”

Though there was a plan on paper, it took years to acquire the equipment and outfit the basements of Expansion to be able to actually carry it out; it was during this prep time that Raymond Black was recruited to Expansion, specifically to head Enlightenment - he was a controversial figure in scientific circles, believing in the ‘supernatural’ and other phenomena deemed nonsense - but it was this conviction that attracted Holmes to him, that ensured him he would be a good fit for their team, because it was the so-called implausible they were chasing.

Raymond was the newest member, but had quickly become like a son to Holmes. With funds and ambitions as widespread as Holmes, he was the perfect candidate to inherit Expansion when Holmes fell ill in 1985. With no children to contest his will, Holmes modified the terms and left everything to Black, “just in case” - a precaution that was warranted. Edward Holmes died in 1989, just weeks before Enlightenment was set to actually begin.

The plan for Enlightenment was simple: seek out subjects, acquire them by any means necessary, and contain them within the lab for study. The profile provided by the tests on Harrison was bare-bones, but served as the building block for their search, and in the winter of 1989, Wilson called a meeting of the Enlightenment board and informed them of a child that was being cared for at a hospital in Baltimore. Wilson was friends with a doctor who worked there, and the two had met at a conference, where Wilson had been told about the child, being treated for cancer - and the strange marker in his DNA.

The kidnapping took place two weeks later, with Black himself stealing into the child’s home and taking him, killing his parents for extra measure - but posing the scene as an accident. All three were presumably killed in a house fire.

Dylan Carver became subject A1 in the Enlightenment Project.

He was four, and yes, incredibly sick, but resilient, and every test conducted came back positive that he possessed the H-42 gene - but merely as a carrier. There was contention between the three scientists on the benefits of keeping a sick child that could “offer little,” as his gene was passive, but eventually, it was unanimously decided that Dylan could still be of use as a test subject; more children would just have to be acquired for further study, to actually find results.

With the new plan to find more children, Black and the remaining team voted on tightening their security – to ensure no one escaped and to ensure that the other divisions of Expansion never stumbled across the children. this was when Black and Theodore de Luca met – a powerful man in his own right, son of an Italian mafia boss (that Theo himself killed, though staged it to look like a dispute with a rival family). de Luca’s family owned a security company, private military, a band of mercenaries, men with scarred faces and blood on their hands and bloodlust in their hearts. A handful of these men (those who lack remorse, who would not hesitate to hurt a child) were selected and employed by Black as security, and thus began the relationship between Expansion and Frontier, de Luca’s company.

(it is important to note that not every employee of Expansion has had a hand in the abduction and torture of children; only around fifty are involved in Enlightenment. most are consumed with legal, world-changing ventures, which earn the company more than enough revenue to cover the expenses of Enlightenment).

Black and his team believe that they are a necessary evil: that they can better this world by discovering these powers and documenting them. They believe that this is the next, natural step in human evolution, and that by unlocking these secrets of the human body and possibly finding a way to offer this advancement to everyone and not just a select few, they can better the human race.

(de Luca, on the other hand, has selfish reasons for associating himself with Enlightenment; his interest is purely to fuel his own interests, and has offered his own soldiers and even his own child to be the first to test forcing mutations in humans; his goal is to turn Enlightment’s interests towards his own and utilize their research to create super soldiers).

PT. II : THE RISE & FALL OF WING A / THE BIRTH OF REYES.

Dylan Carver was merely the beginning. His adoption in 1989 was a catalyst for things to come; while, initially, the Enlightenment team had decided on minimalizing risk and acquiring only one child, the transition of power from Holmes to de Luca & Black not only allowed researchers more funding and resources, but added a personal agenda to the mix (though this was not pubic knowledge; de Luca kept his intentions to himself, but was adamant on pushing for a quicker breakthrough regardless). The second and third child were taken from their homes in 1994, under circumstances similar to Dylan Carver’s 1989 “death.”

Over the next 5 years, men of de Luca’s organization who were easily influenced by money and trusted to be discreet and ruthless were sent across the united states to obtain children as they were identified, each kidnapping carried out differently and varied so that they seemed random and without pattern: children were taken from parks, their homes at nights, public events; their parents were murdered, their parents were injured, valuables were stolen – each crime scene presented differently. By 2000, A Wing consisted of 12 subjects, who were as follows:

Sarah Michaels / subject A7, taken from Ontario, Canada, in 1997 (age 5).

Mary Kim / subject A8, taken from San Diego, California, in 1998 (age 3).

These children were discovered by Expansion because Expansion had begun establishing free clinics across the country, offering multiple forms of healthcare - screening for cancers and paternity tests, etc, anything involving DNA made available, all results logged into Expansion’s computers, that then run through a program that produced names based on varying factors.

The story of subject A12 is different from every other subject in Enlightenment’s history.

Subject A12, given the name MATEO REYES, is the biological son of Theodore de Luca, via a surrogate, who believed de Luca to be a small-town doctor wanting to start a family with his ‘partner’ (a part played by one of the Expansion scientists). A ‘suitable’ surrogate was discovered who carried the correct markers. Immediately following Reyes’ birth, he was forced into the lab, labeled as subject A12 (he would not receive the name Mateo Reyes until the age of 16; until this point, he is referred to solely as 12).

12 was ‘raised’ by the scientists of Enlightenment, his ‘upbringing’ overseen by de Luca. His origins were not known, nor were they questioned. The primary point of study of 12′s birth and upbringing was to gauge if the gene and the powers that come with it could be forced - de Luca had secretly been receiving treatment, attempts to warp his DNA and change him into a carrier, and it was believed that these changes to him would carry through to a child.

This life is obviously very little of a ‘life’, and 12′s personality reflected that.

He was not subjected to the punishing torture of the scientists until the age of 7, but was raised in a cage nonetheless. It was also interesting to the Board to study the effect that being confined from such a small age would have on someone, and de Luca wanted him close and contained.

By the age of 7, however, with no indication of abilities (which was not uncommon - out of the 12 subjects, only 3 had shown abilities prior to the age of 10, but this did not benefit the experiment, and so it was seen as a disappointment), various methods were employed to attempt to force the mutation into maturation; it had been accidentally discovered that extreme stress to the system could throw the process into overdrive, and with de Luca’s insistence, 12 was subjected to various tortures - further isolation in darkness, then a sudden switch to constant light; confined in a smaller, blacked-out box; submerged in water for ten minute intervals at a time. it took a year of these ‘sessions’ for anything to happen - and when it did, it was an explosion.

The lights had cycled to pitch black, and a scientist observing 12′s brain activity suddenly screamed. There was an attempt to turn the lights back on, but the darkness persisted, to a stifling, suffocating point; this episode lasted for nearly an hour before finally the darkness dissipated, and the bodies of three scientists were discovered in the observation room. But the security tapes caught the incident, and what was discovered stunned the Board: the darkness had morphed into 12, had taken over the room, had killed the men. But these are the results that de Luca craved, knowing that there was the capacity of violence existing alongside these abilities, and so the unease of the scientists who reviewed the footage was ignored.

Instead, 12 was encouraged to test the limits of his abilities. Over the next few years, he discovered that shadows seemed to be alive in his presence; he could manipulate them, disappear into it, utilize it as a shield, transform it into a weapon and use it to kill (by smothering, by robbing people of their senses by stuffing them with it - it was never actively encouraged that he use this ability, but de Luca obviously enjoyed it. By the age of 13, 12 had murdered five security guards and five scientists, though the scientists were always accidental).

He was considered the biggest success of Phase I / A Wing. Most of the other children were monumental failures; out of the 12, only six actually developed abilities, two of whom escaped (subjects A4 and A5, and remain the only two ever to do so; will be talked about in a later post). In 2006, plans had begun to expand Enlightenment for a B Wing / Phase II / “second try”, because Black and Wilson and Brock were determined, despite the setback that Phase I felt like.

In 2013, when 12 was 13, the Purge of A Wing began, with the remaining subjects “disposed of” (procurement of B Wing had begun in 2009, and was finalized in 2013, shortly before The Purge).

12 was spared because of his success, and shifted over to a side project called “ARES”, the blueprint for de Luca’s super-soldiers. de Luca could commit time and effort to this because he was now a majority shareholder in Expansion, a move that Black encouraged, eager to have more of de Luca’s money in their experiments and their projects.

PT. III : PHASE II / B WING & THE AFTERMATH OF THE PURGE OF A WING.

In the years since Holmes had created Enlightenment, the profile and techniques used to scout children had greatly improved, partially due to Expansion’s establishments of medical care centers and their greatly improved medical care being made available for anyone, free of charge. Every ‘patient’ who received any sort of care beneath Expansion’s banner had their DNA logged, and as a result, a vivid picture was painted of who would be better candidates - who would actually produce results. Expansion had long-since become a global brand, ingratiating themselves not only across America, but slowly inching into Europe, and aiming to move beyond. They provided medical care and relief to countries in need; they painted themselves as heroes (which, for the most part, they really are. Like said, Enlightenment is NOT the primary goal of Expansion, and it is only a small percentage of workers who are actually aware of it. The rest is doing really good work, and has actually advanced medical care quite a bit).

But it wasn’t just only the method of finding subjects that had changed, but the care of the subjects that would be handled differently; while A Wing subjects had minimal contact with one another and little education, B Wing children would be treated less like prisoners and ‘conditioned’ to better function, because after a certain amount of years, they would be allowed back into the world - conditionally, of course. B Wing was also smaller, consisting of only six children, but the Board was confident that there would be better results despite such a small number.

While the new children of B Wing were treated more compassion, 12 was not. As the progenitor of ARES, the blueprint for a super-soldier, he was subjected to more torture; it was not enough to de Luca that he could control shadows, and so more experimental and dangerous alterations were made to him to enhance his strength and senses, to truly make him super. As a result, he possesses strengthened sight and hearing, but lacks the ability to taste; he is stronger and faster, but cannot smell. He is hulking, 6′7″ by the age of 16, growth enhanced, but his feeling is greatly reduced (primarily when it comes to pain), each ‘improvement’ robbing him of something in turn.

At the age of 16, 12 and de Luca finally met face-to-face; though de Luca had been monitoring him since birth, they had yet to actually have contact, and he felt it was finally time, to see firsthand what his DNA and money had created for him. It was during this meeting that de Luca named him Mateo Reyes - the first name ‘honoring’ a childhood friend, the surname after a character in a movie that de Luca enjoyed.

de Luca expressed his approval for Reyes, for his name and his abilities and what he will be, and Reyes tried to kill him. (He survived only because they had ‘collared’ Reyes, implanting a chip into his neck that received pulses that would render him immobile; after killing another security guard, it was deemed a necessary measure, one that even de Luca agreed to).

He was then thrown into solitary, with the Board insisting on his death - arguing that he was too unstable, not exactly the vision of the project, but de Luca held firm, despite the inability to speak because of the bruising on his throat. de Luca was thrilled with the turn of events, and dismissed their concerns - primarily because, due to the experimentation he had been subjecting himself to, death would not come so easily to him. de Luca insisted instead that they begin training Reyes to rejoin the world, as they would be doing for the B Wing children.

“He’s collared. What could go wrong?”

So his education began - but it was a difficult process. Reyes had only the most rudimentary grasp on language, and found other subjects difficult; he didn’t care for math or science, and was quick to anger when it was forced onto him, so the bulk of his education rested in filling in the gaps in his speech (which still isn’t good, but he doesn’t care) and educating him on the outside world. These lessons continued until the age of 19, when a small, contained test-run was carried out: Reyes would be accompanying de Luca to a “business meeting.”

A ‘meeting’ that turned out to be an assassination.

de Luca pressed Reyes to kill the man - a man who had attempted to steal from him, so it wasn’t random, and, to de Luca, was entirely justified. But Reyes ‘behaved’, did not attempt to hurt anyone outside the target, and since it was seen as a success, Reyes was allowed outside - only a few hours at a time, primarily at night, in the beginning, but by the age of 23, he was given an apartment near Expansion’s headquarters, and allowed to live there instead of in the lab.

The years between 19 and 23 were not easy-going, however; de Luca was more eager than ever to see how Reyes could operate in environments less-and-less contained, and pushed and pushed and pushed for him to use his abilities, always on targets personally selected by de Luca, rivals in his illegal dealings or people he’d felt had crossed him.

PT. IV : CURRENT TIMELINE, THE RESISTANCE & REYES AS A PROTAGONIST.

Despite how careful Expansion is and how clean their public image is, their activities are not entirely unknown. The public is not aware of the kidnappings and torture carried out in Expansion’s basement, but an ex-employee unaffiliated with Enlightenment absolutely is. She uncovered it purely by accident, and after a series of events, the Board became aware she knew - which led to her faking her death, with the help of a vigilante group that targets big corporations and exposes their dirty laundry - who were obviously incredibly interested in what she had to say, even with so little proof (there were copies of files stolen from Enlightenment’s databases, but it wasn’t enough to take down Expansion). This group, known as FR33DOM, switched their focus entirely to exposing Expansion.

And after three years, they found an opening.

in 2024, FR33DOM’s vigilantes, following de Luca, searching for any loose thread to pull, find that de Luca frequently visits a 24 year old man named Mateo Reyes, listed as the owner of an apartment only three streets from Expansion. Curious, FR33DOM begin to dig into Reyes’ past, and while in a cursory sweep, nothing appears out of order - it is a group of ghosts, and ghosts can recognize their own kind. It is quickly discovered that most of Reyes’ past is fabricated, and after years of searching, FR33DOM believes they finally have an opening.

What exactly Reyes’ connection is with Expansion and de Luca, they don’t know, but they’re intent on finding out.

By 2024, Raymond Black and de Luca are the only remaining original members of the Board. de Luca’s power over Enlightenment has greatly increased, and with it, so has his arrogance; he believes they should be pushing more, demanding more of the subjects. With this increase in power, more and more of the workers of the Project have aligned themselves with him over Black, and are quick to agree with him - there is guaranteed money in it for them, after all, so why wouldn’t they agree? de Luca demands that they pay more attention to ARES, of which Reyes continues to be the only subject, and Black, feeling cornered, agrees.

Some of de Luca’s mercenaries are then taken in and put through the same torture as Reyes.

de Luca informs Reyes of this development in person, but Reyes does not react well. Despite his conditioning and the years of torture and knowing only the lab, he has a hatred for Enlightenment, Expansion, and de Luca; he has a hatred for the world, for forcing him into this position and allowing him to experience what he has, and so Reyes does not react well to knowing that it will happen again. A fight occurs between the two, and Reyes throws de Luca from a window.

The vigilantes from FR33DOM watch this unfold. They watch Reyes leave, and they follow him.

But Reyes’ heightened senses alert him to this, and, reacting badly because he does not know how to react any other way, he ends up nearly killing one of them - but de Luca has awoken by this point, and he has activated Reyes’ collar, and Reyes is brought down and his GPS activated so that he can be collected and returned to Enlightenment to ‘cool down’ - but FR33DOM took him instead for questioning.

It was easy enough for them to disable the chip, to wake him up, to interrogate him - but as he slowly grew conscious again and the shadows began to react to his panic, he was slowly embraced by them, drawing towards him protectively. This led to the FR33DOM vigilantes to re-enable his chip and leave him on the side of the road, where Enlightenment security found him, and brought him back for questioning.

de Luca was disappointed, but not to a level that would agree to Reyes being ‘disposed of.’ His punishment was a month in solitary, and Reyes took it, but did not feel bad for what he did to de Luca - his only regret was that he didn’t kill him.

When Reyes’ confinement was finished, and he was able to go back to his apartment, he found a man sitting on his bed, wearing a plague doctor’s mask. Despite Reyes’ recent ‘episode’ and his upbringing, Reyes’ apartment was not under surveillance; FR33DOM had discovered this, and had deemed it a good enough risk to send in one of their own to talk to Reyes and discover who he was and his connection to de Luca. They had been waiting for the month, and had begun to lose hope, when finally they discovered that Reyes was no longer in Expansion (they had hijacked the connection to his chip, and could see his location and the other details provided by it, just as Enlightenment can.)

Reyes told the truth, because he was never taught to lie.

CURRENTLY: FR33DOM is attempting to recruit Reyes into their ranks and use him to take down Expansion from the inside, but he continues to resist their advances, despite his hatred for de Luca. He does not trust anyone easily, and they’re no exception. Reyes continues to practice his abilities, and is slowly coming to the realization that he wants out from underneath de Luca’s thumb completely. The freedom offered to him currently just isn’t enough.
