"January 22, 2024 is not merely a date in the calendar but heralds the advent of a new era," Modi said, speaking outside the temple to the Hindu deity Ram, built on grounds where a mosque stood for centuries before it was torn down in 1992 by Hindu zealots incited by members of his party.
That demolition triggered the worst religious riots since independence – killing 2,000 people, most of them Muslims – and shook the foundations of India's officially secular political order.
Tens of thousands of chanting and dancing devotees waving flags, honking horns and beating drums have converged on the northern town of Ayodhya, with roads clogged, trains packed full and the rest marching in on foot.
Few members of Ayodhya's Muslim community were seen joining the jubilant street party.
But for Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the opening of the Ram Mandir temple is a landmark moment in a decades-long campaign to align the country's governance with its majority faith.
"The Lord has made me an instrument to represent all the people of India", Modi said when he launched an 11-day ritual fast ahead of the "auspicious" opening.
Tycoons, cricketers and actors
Excitement has reached a fever pitch, with thousands of Hindu believers dancing in packed streets as giant loudspeakers blast out religious tunes.
Vijay Kumar, 18, took four days to reach the town after walking and hitchhiking 600 kilometres (370 miles).
"We just wanted to be here," Kumar said. "We just wish to see the temple before we leave."
About 2,500 musicians are expected to perform on over 100 stages for the crowds of pilgrims, desperate to see the elaborate temple, built at an estimated $240 million that the project's backers say was sourced from public donations.
The 140 kilometres (87 miles) between the town and Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow is a seemingly endless stream of billboards of blue-skinned Ram with bow and arrow – as well as of Modi and the region's chief minister, the saffron-robed Hindu monk Yogi Adityanath.
Bukesh Rajiybng, 54, travelled for three days in a jam-packed train to attend the celebration.
"It's a moment we have all dreamed of for decades," he said. "I think the people and Ram will definitely bless Modi for this."
Other attendees jetted in to the newly built international airport and will stay at a crop of hotels built to cater to the millions of pilgrims expected to visit each year.
Among the celebrity guests at the opening are Indian tycoons, former national cricket captain Virat Kohli and Bollywood titan Amitabh Bachchan.
'Death and destruction'
Modi and the BJP have sought to bring the Hindu faith to the forefront of public life since sweeping to power a decade ago.
Party luminaries regularly condemn earlier eras of Islamic rule over parts of India as a time of "slavery" when their own religion was oppressed, with Ayodhya a key plank in their narrative.
Devout Hindus believe Ram, one of the most revered Hindu gods, was born in the town more than 7,000 years ago, but that the Babri mosque was built over his birthplace by a 16th-century Muslim emperor.
The BJP played an instrumental role in public campaigning that eventually led to the mosque's demolition.
The destruction presaged the rise of the BJP and Modi as unstoppable electoral juggernauts, displacing the secularist Congress party that had governed India almost without interruption since independence from Britain.
Modi's consecration of the temple alongside Hindu priests will again project him as a defender of the faith ahead of a general election expected to begin in April.
The BJP is heavily favoured to win a third successive landslide victory, in part because of Modi's appeals to Hindu nationalism, and opposition parties are boycotting the temple ceremony, saying the event will be a thinly veiled campaign rally.
Many of India's 200 million Muslims, already anxious in a climate of increased sectarian tensions, have watched the clamour around the temple with trepidation.
Mohammed Shahid, 52, speaking to AFP last month in Ayodhya, recounted how his father was burned alive by a mob.
"For me, the temple symbolises nothing but death and destruction", he said.

Yogi magic fails in Meerut-Saharanpur as BJP loses 64 of 90 municipal seats
The poll result has become a major concern for the BJP as the data showed that Yogi Adityanath’s magic did not work in the rural and semi-urban areas.
Tumblr media
In the recent UP civic polls, the BJP may have been able to win all the 17 Nagar Nigam seats and logged a landslide victory but the numbers in the western part of the state, especially in Meerut, Ghaziabad and Saharanpur divisions, did not signify the impact of the Yogi wave at the Nagar Palika and the Nagar Panchayat levels.
This has become a major concern for the party as the data showed that Yogi Adityanath’s magic did not work in the rural and semi-urban areas.
In the Meerut-Saharanpur division, except for the mayor’s seat, the BJP’s magic did not work. The saffron party lost 64 of the 90 seats in the municipality and the panchayat presidentships in both the mandals. The BJP candidates could win only on 26 seats and independent candidates have worked their magic in cities like Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, and Ghaziabad. Importantly, these are the districts where the BJP was reduced to just one seat each.
In both the mandals, the BJP got the maximum number of seats in the municipal bodies from Bulandshahr. Of this, nine chairmen are from the BJP. Even though the BJP’s campaign revolved around the impact of Yogi Adityanath’s governance and benefits of flagship schemes, it could not transcend into votes in these divisions.
Talking about leaders, General VK Singh (Retd.) is an MP from Ghaziabad. Sanjeev Balyan is a Union minister from Muzaffarnagar. Apart from these, Narendra Kashyap from Ghaziabad, Somendra Tomar and Dinesh Khatik from Meerut, Kunwar Brijesh Singh from Deoband, KP Malik from Baghpat, Jaswant Saini from Saharanpur are also state ministers. Also, there is one Rajya Sabha MP each in Ghaziabad-Noida and two in Meerut. But this could not get the numbers in their favour.
Similarly, the BJP’s state organization general secretary Dharampal is from the Bijnor district. State vice president of BJP Mohit Beniwal Shamli, state ministers Dr Chandramohan and Amit Valmiki are from Bulandshahr, state minister Basant Tyagi is from Ghaziabad. The exercise to deploy ministers on ground could not work for the BJP.
As the reason for BJP’s defeat has been said to be about the ticket claimants damaging approach, there was a huge uproar in the party over the distribution. There were open allegations of money exchanging hands in the distribution of tickets. In Bulandshahr, the BJP gave tickets on two seats to candidates who joined the party just a year back. The old workers, who did not get the chairman’s ticket, contested the elections as rebels and got the votes.
On the other hand, in Noida’s Jewar seat, a candidate who joined BJP a few days before the election was given a ticket. The BJP cadre turned revolted and the result was that the candidate finished at the fourth spot. The BJP also lost Loni, Khoda and Muradnagar seats in Ghaziabad due to infighting. The candidates who did not get a ticket fought against the party as independents, creating a triangular fight.

Yogi Adityanath Biography
Yogi Adityanath Biography
Yogi Adityanath (originally Ajay Singh Bisht), an Indian Hindu monk & politician born on June 5, 1972, and has been the 21st & present Chief Minister in Uttar Pradesh since March 19, 2017.
Tumblr media
Following the victory of the BJP there in the 2017 State Assembly elections, in even though he was a prominent candidate, he was named the Chief Minister of UP on March 26, 2017.
He once more won the state assembly elections in 2022, becoming Uttar Pradesh's chief minister for a second time and making history by becoming the first chief minister who return to power after serving a complete five years in office. From 1998 to 2017, when he withdrew from becoming the Chief Minister, he served five consecutive terms as a member of the Lok Sabha from the Uttar Pradesh district of Gorakhpur.
In addition, since Mahant Avaidyanath, his religious "father," passed away in September 2014, Adityanath has served as the mahant of Gorakhnath Math, the Hindu institution in Gorakhpur. In addition, he founded the Hindu nationalist group Hindu Yuva Vahini. He portrays himself as a right-wing populist and a Hindutva nationalist.
Boyhood and Education
Yogi Adityanath was born on June 5, 1972, as Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht in the Rajput family of Panchur, Pauri Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh. Anand Singh Bisht, his deceased father, was a forest ranger. With four brothers & three sisters, he has been the second child born into the family. In Uttarakhand, there at Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics.
Around the 1990s, he relocated to join the drive for the Ayodhya Ram temple. At the same time, Mahant Avaidyanath, the leader of the Gorakhnath Math, accepted him as a disciple. The push for such Ayodhya Ram temple was being led at the time by Mahant Avaidyanath. After receiving his initiation, Adityanath settled in Gorakhpur but frequently traveled to his home village, opening a school there in 1998.
When Avaidyanath passed away on September 12, 2014, Adityanath was elevated to the position of Mahant, or high priest, inside the Gorakhnath Math. Two days later, amid customary Nath sect rites, he was appointed Peethadhishwar of the Math.
Debut in politics
Yogi Adityanath is a member of the Hindutva political lineage in Uttar Pradesh, which dates back to Mahant Digvijay Nath, and oversaw the erection of idols inside the Babri Masjid of Ayodhya on December 22, 1949. Both Digvijay Nath & their successor Avaidyanath were members of the Hindu Mahasabha & had been chosen to represent their respective parties in the Parliament. The two schools of Hindu nationalism converged in the 1980s when the BJP, as well as the Sangh Parivar, joined this same Ayodhya movement. In 1991, Avaidyanath joined the BJP, but he still exercised considerable independence. Adityanath was chosen to lead India's Lower House of Parliament four years after Avaidyanath was named his successor.
In his first electoral victory, Adityanath founded Hindu Yuva Vahini, a youth organization that became well-known for its work in eastern Uttar Pradesh that played a crucial role in his rapid ascent. Adityanath as well as the BJP leadership have frequently clashed over the distribution of election tickets. Adityanath has been a prominent campaigner for the BJP, therefore the party has prevented the tensions from rising.
He made the connections between Indian Leftist parties and Nepali Maoists a central campaign theme in 2006 and urged Madhesi leaders to resist Maoism in Nepal. His convoy was allegedly ambushed in 2008 as it traveled to Azamgarh for one rally against terrorism.
One person was killed in the incident, as well as at least six other people were hurt.
Adityanath and other BJP officials gathered in January 2007 to mourn the loss of a guy who had been slain as a result of religious violence. The police later detained him and his followers and imprisoned them in Gorkhapur jail on allegations of upsetting the peace and disobeying prohibitory orders. Following his detention, there was more rioting, during which many coaches of the Mumbai-Gorakhpur Godan Express got allegedly set afire by rioting Hindu Yuva Vahini members. The district judge and the neighborhood's chief of police were transferred & replaced the day following the arrest.
Personal opinions
On January 3, 2016, a day following the purported terrorist strike by Pakistani militants on an Indian air force facility in Pathankot, Adityanath compares Pakistan to Satan.
Adityanath asked India to implement similar tactics to combat terrorism. He had praised then-US President Donald Trump's move to enact a restriction on citizens from seven countries with a majority of Muslims entering the US.

YOGI ADITYANATH : REVOLUTION FROM A COMMON MAN TO A MONK TO THE CM OF UTTAR PRADESH
Tumblr media
Read newspapers, turn on your TV news, or open Youtube app on your mobile phone, the breaking news everywhere is about Yogi Adityanath. Yogi Adityanath has made history by winning the political seat for the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the second consecutive time. He is from Bharatiya Janta Party, the party of our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. While everybody is interested to know about his victory and reactions, I am curious about his roots.
Yogi Adityanath was born on 5th June 1972 in Panchur or Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, India. His name was Ajay Singh Bisht before he became a monk. His father was a forest ranger and his mother was a housewife. There are 4 siblings in the family, including him. He has completed his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna University of Uttarakhand.
Tumblr media
He always had those leadership qualities, from a very young age. During his college period, he was a member of the students’ council. He was an honest patriot and a strict follower of the Hindu religion. In 1990, the historic incident of Ram Mandir and Babri Masjid took place. As he was in favor of the Ram mandir, he was a part of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir movement. He met Mahant Avaidyanath during this period, who was the head priest of the Gorakhnath math. He was so inspired by the mahant that he left his home and started to follow Avaidyanath to any extent.
Avaidyanath was shocked to see his dedication towards the Hindu religion and Avaidyanath himself. Ajay became a disciple of the priest, Avaidyanath. The priest, then, entitled him with a new name, “Yogi Adityanath”. After becoming a devotee of him, Yogi Adityanath indulged in many religious works. Avaidyanath made him familiar with all the tasks of a priest and in 1994 declared him to be his successor in the Nath community of the Math.
Tumblr media
Avaidyanath was a member of politics in those times. As a chief, he also influenced Yogi Adityanath into the political world. Priest Avaidyanath dead in 1998 and Yogi Ji became the main or the chief priest at the Gorakhnath math. In the same year, he was elected to the Lower House of the Parliament. He became the youngest member of the 12th Lok Sabha. He started a group of young people known as “Hindu Yuva Vahini”.
He was a part of the Lok Sabha Parliament in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2009, and 2014. In the year, 2017 he was a BJP campaigner for the seat of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He won the elections and became a Chief Minister of the State. He was quite a strict Chief Minister and brought about new moral laws for the betterment of UP. He is a loyal follower of the Hindu religion and so, he changed UP. He changed the laws related to the killing and consumption of cow meat, tobacco products, and band porn, a revolution in historical cases like ‘love jihad’, ‘teen talaq’ was carried out because of him. He made rigorous laws about rapes, harassment, and molestations. Even many police officers were suspended because of not following the protocols.
Tumblr media
Even if he is a monk or Yogi, he is rigid about his opinions. He has no great bond with many political figures. But, because of the revolution, he brought in Up, people have become a fan of Yogi Adityanath. This is the reason, he has become the CM of UP even in 2022. And today, he took the inspirational oath as a Chief Minister.

The oath-taking ceremony of Yogi Adityanath as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh will take place at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana cricket stadium in Lucknow today at 4 PM. This will break the 37 years old jinx of the state. The event is expected to be marked with the presence of the BJP brass which includes prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, and other major BJP party leaders. On this Thursday, he was chosen as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
According to sources, 85thousands of people will be part of the oath-taking ceremony. BJP party has registered a big win in UP assembly elections 2022. As they have won consecutively so they have broken the record of sorts of nearly 40 years. Pointing to this record, Yogi Adityanath says, “The party believed in me in 2017. I was just a normal MP and I had no administrative experience and yet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the home minister were like guardians to me and told me how to be good governance to UP”.
As BJP secured victory is one of the major victories therefore the swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a grand affair. Signs of progress in Indian democracy from the results of recent state-elections
Signs of progress in Indian democracy from the results of recent state-elections
Many friends who are liberal and left-liberal are unhappy with these results. The victory of Yogi Adityanath in the UP and the BJP in a number of other states has made them unhappy. However my sense is that the results of recently held elections provide certain signs of progress of India’s democracy.  The first and foremost is the success of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. Issues of bad roads, stray cattle, inflation pose crop up amidst UP polls
News by Varun Datta, Delhi
With the SP, BSP and the Congress fielding Muslim candidates from the Jaunpur Sadar seat in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP nominee hopes to find a less difficult road to the Assembly due to a likely division of votes.
However, issues of bad roads, daily traffic congestions in the city, inflation, unemployment and stray cattle can pose a problem for sitting BJP MLA Girish Yadav, who has been fielded again from the seat by the party. Yadav is a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government in the state.
Voting in Jaunpur will be held on March 7 in the last phase of the ongoing Uttar Pradesh polls.
Among the major parties, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has fielded Mohammad Arshad Khan, BSP Salim Khan and the Congress NadeemJaved.Javed was elected from the seat on a Congress ticket in 2012. In the 2017 elections, he was in the fray as the candidate of the SP-Congress combine but was defeated by Yadav.
Sitting MLA Yadav is confident the BJP's development work will lead him to victory, aided by a likely polarisation of Muslim votes. SP candidate Mohammad Arshad Khan, who was the MLA for the SP-BSP alliance from this area in 1993, however, exudes confidence that the Muslim-Yadav vote bank and his old well-wishers will work in his favour. BSP's Salim Khan is trying to strengthen his fight by uniting his traditional Dalit vote bank and the Muslim community in this region.
Javed, the Congress contestant, on the other hand, feels party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's "Ladkihun, lad saktihun" campaign and support from the educated sections and the youth will propel him to victory once again. Jaunpur district is adjacent to Prime Minister NarendraModi's parliamentary constituency Varanasi.
There are more than 3.5 lakh voters in the JaunpurSadar assembly seat, and the number of Muslim voters is over 90,000, as per party estimates. The seat has a considerable number of Kshatriya voters, along with those of the Vaishya and the Maurya communities. A local businessman, Iqbal Ahmed, claimed that the BJP is afraid of a repeat of the equation seen in 1996.
That year, Afzal Ahmed from the SP and Haji Mohammad Taufiq from the BSP were in the fray, and against them, the BJP had fielded SurendraPratap Singh, hoping to win on the support of Hindu voters in the seat. The BJP's strategy fell flat and Afzal Ahmed won. Vijay Yadav of Jaunpur city claimed he would not vote for the BJP candidate even though he is from the same community.
"We will not vote for BJP candidate GirishYadav because many people in our family are in government jobs and the Samajwadi Party has promised to reinstate the old pension system. If that happens, the future of our family will be secured. So, the vote of our entire family will go to the SP," he added. Sadiq Khan, who deals in batteries at the main market of the city, said the business of small traders has come to a standstill under the BJP government.
"Our business has been ruined due to the COVID-19 epidemic and the GST has forced us to think about closing our shops. Our entire family and friends will vote for the SP," he said. Ramji Madanwal, who runs a breakfast joint at the Chaharsu intersection, is happy with the work of the state government.
He said it has become easier for him to run his business as the law and order situation has improved and electricity comes round the clock. The roads of the city are, however, bad and lead to problems of traffic congestions that affects businesses, Madanwal added. Preeti Gupta of Urdu Bazar, Rani Tiwari of Olandganj, and Seema Singh, an employee at the district hospital, said they have made up their minds to vote for the BJP due to the improved law and order situation in the state.
Singh felt that although the government is doing good work for women, the situation will improve if inflation reduces a little Malku Ram, a farmer, raised the issue of stray cattle, and said he is forced to spend the nights guarding his crops in the fields. It will bring relief to farmers if the government made some arrangements to solve the problem of stray cattle, he added. BJP candidate GirishYadav told PTI that in his tenure, a lot of work has been done in the city, including that on the sewer network, the ring road outside the city and also on beautification. Work has been done to get people's ration cards made in rural areas and to provide houses under the PradhanMantriAwasYojana, he said. Yadav said if he won the election this time, he would work to build a flyover to resolve the issue of traffic jams caused by railway crossings in the city. Apart from this, the construction work of the four-lane road between Jaunpur Shahganj and Ambedkar Nagar will also be expedited, he added.
Samajwadi Party candidate Arshad Khan said that after winning the election, he will open schools in all the panchayats of the area so that students don't have to travel to the city to study. Apart from this, the Samajwadi pension, free rations and other facilities announced by the party will be implemented, he said.
Congress candidate NadeemJaved said that the biggest problem of Jaunpur is the migration of the youth for employment. "We will try to provide means of employment to the youth in Jaunpur itself so that they do not have to go anywhere," he said. BSP candidate Salim Khan, a builder by profession, said Mayawati developed Uttar Pradesh during her four terms.
"This time too, after she becomes the chief minister, Uttar Pradesh will be put on the path of development, as will Jaunpur," he said.
