Yayoi Kusuma is an artist near and dear to my heart. I think her installation, ‘Narcisuss Garden’ is a unique example of art escaping the museum.

Blog Week 1
Reflection
This week involved delving into Lighting and sound. Two practices I am not extremely familar with. Within the dicussions of class I was able to see what concepts in lighting and sound I wanted to deleve into. In terms of lighting I was fascinated by James Turnell’s work. In 2018 I was able to see his exhibition ‘Event Horizon’ in MONA in Tasmania. I appreciate works that play with perception and the audiences state of mind. Turnell’s work encapsulted me in a mediative state with the vast warm color environment he had created. Turnell dicuss on his website about the “physical feeling and power that space can give.” The use of space in his practice is something I admire, I have always engaged with psysical spaces. With the rise of media and portable technology there is alot of digital art that exists with a two dimesional sphere within a device. Although I do delight in many work of art in this setting, there is something to be said about work that utilises the three dimensional space we have. I would like to explore the concept of expectation compression that was brought up in class dicussion. The example in the dicussion in class used in lighting for A Doll’s House, Part 2. This concept were you can skew the audience baseline of normal. The example was using the stage in vivid blue lighting that eventually by the end the audience got so use to the blue it seemed like there was no colored light on the stage.
In terms of sound there was a dicussion of importance in volume in certain sound experiences that want to achieve a heightened emotion such as overwhelming. I am leaning towards choosing exhilaration as my choosen adjective which would considered a heightened emotion. Heightened meaning being more intense than normal which is precisely what someone being exhilrated would be. After viewing some of video works as a class there was a consensus that projects could not do the same thing for too long or it would lose the audience engagment. This is a point I agreed with as with myself I notice in artworks that drag out something for too long I disengage with the project. The conversation of Plato’s Cave interested me. Perception and philiopshy are both things I am attracted to. I would like to see if I could use the inspiration from philisophical concepts in my work.
Research
Academic
There is an association between exhilaration and low-intensity exercise. In Steptoe, A. and Cox, S., 1988. The acute effects of aerobic exercise on mood are explored. In this study, one group did low-intensity exercise by listening to a metronome and the other do high-intensity exercise listened to music. The group that did low-intensity exercise felt exhilarated and positive were the other group felt more levels of fatigue and stress. This was regardless of the participant's individual health and fitness. Although this study heavily focused on exercise I found interest in the role of music in the study. The participants felt a level of fatigue over time due to the belief they will have to keep running with the pace of the music. This showed music can heavily impact one's energy levels and stress levels. Cafes use Lofi calm music to relax customers whereas bands blast music at festivals to amp up a crowd. This association with fast music with having to be in a fast pace state if prolonged would fatigue someone. In an art piece where the audience members are heavily actively involved in listening to the music, you would not want to become fatigued from listening to quick music for too long. My chosen adjective exhilaration is a positive heightened state of emotion, I would not like to induce any negative emotions in the audience.
Creative Practice
Yayoi Kusuma is known as the “Princess of Polka Dots”. Yayoi kusuma’s vibrant colored polka dots are a popular motif across her works. From the audience perceptive on her work people may believe her to be an artist who is full of joy due to her artistic style. Although to her art was a means of survival. Growing up Kusuma experienced hallucinations, the way she dealed with these was to draw what she saw. Her using art as a form of healing and creating art based on her perception of life is something I like to be inspired by.
Technical
Aiming to become familar with the Pharos Designer 2 program I watched the tutorials alongside self nagivating and exploring the program myself. I have used reaper before in a orevious sound design class but I would not say I am extremely familar with the software. Watching yotube tutorials of Reaper Tv and Reaper media and just trying to understand the fundamentals of features in reaper.
I look into some installitions that I took inspiration from and how they work techinally. Teamlabs in Tokyo currently have their Planets exhibitions on which I fortunate to see at the beginning of this year. My favourite piece in the exhibition being Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers with the sound by Hideaki Takahashi. In a dark room audience members lie or sit on the floor where computer generated real time animations of flowers grow and die around them. This ever changing element on the exhibition was created through code and programing of the computer generated images. The code would of been on a random shuffle of sequences of where to make flowers die or grow. This interested me and it a techinal aspect I want to explore in my project. To create this I could 3D model shapes in Maya and place them in Unity and code them in C# to make they into an array and randomly shuffle in the space creating an everchanging sequence.
Aditionally the floor was mirrored which creating the feeling the space was larger than it was. This is a common tactic used in interior design to make spaces feel larger than they are and to have a sense of the room being endless. I would like to utilise mirroring in my practice in aim to establish the envrioment that the audience is in, in my case being the Capitol as endless. This endless envrioment sense creates a similar concept of how people would feel in space.
I also looked into The LUME being the world’s biggest digital art gallery. I liked the LUME for providing the audience with a sense of agency and being able to choose where they go in the space and still being able to see the same exhibition as everyone else. They create the LUME through projecting images onto sculptures. Projection is something I want to explore and see if it’s possible within the sapce of the Capitol. Being able to make projections around the same and in the surrounding seating would bring the project outside of the two dimensional screen space.
Progress
Being the beginning of the project this week was mostly gaining inspiration for my project. Analysing and becoming more conscious of moments when I have felt exhilaration and what factors help curate that feeling. I explored programs including Pharos Designer 2 and Reaper. I brainstormed the medium I wanted to utilise for my final project and how I can incorporate my strengths (video editing).

1.
I choose this image because this image captures the skyline of New york city. And new york is the center of arts and diversity. The place where Kusuma felt that she will conquer, she felt safe.
When Yatoi Kusuma first arrived in New York, she promised herself that she would conquer New York. Kusama's use of polka dots is significant because it represents her ongoing struggle with mental illness. The repetition and pattern of the dots reflect her obsessive-compulsive tendencies, while the bright colors evoke a sense of joy and playfulness. The title "To Conquer b Nyc" suggests that Kusama sees herself as an outsider trying to make her mark on the city. This theme is further emphasized by the installation taking up an entire room, forcing viewers to confront it head-on.
2.
This is an old picture of Kusuma before she came to NYC. Her charcoal drawings scattered on the floor behind her. As we know she is one of the most famous artists existing till now. However, in the 1950s, her work was largely ignored by the art world. This can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, Kusama's art was ahead of its time. Her use of polka dots and bright colors was considered too radical for the conservative tastes of the 1950s. Additionally, her work often dealt with themes such as sexuality and mental illness, which were taboo subjects at the time. Secondly, Kusama was a woman in a male-dominated field. The art world in the 1950s was largely dominated by men, and women artists were often overlooked or dismissed.
3.I choose this image because it shows that Kusuma can paint anywhere and anytime. She is well known for her polka dots patterns, Some argue that it is a reflection of her mental state, while others suggest that it is a way for her to express her individuality. Kusama's fascination with polka dots began in her childhood when she experienced hallucinations of the world being covered in dots. This experience became the foundation for her artistic expression, and she began incorporating polka dots into all aspects of her work.
4.
I really like this picture because of the repetition of red and white color. How the mirror behind her just makes the room larger and open.
It has been known that Yayoi Kusuma was the first artist to create a glass room in New York. In 1965, she created a glass room in New York City, which was the first of its kind. The installation was called "Endless Love Show," and it featured a small room covered entirely in mirrors with small colored lights hanging from the ceiling. The glass room was an immersive experience that allowed visitors to see themselves reflected infinitely in the mirrors. The colored lights added to the surreal atmosphere of the installation and created an otherworldly effect. Kusama's glass room was groundbreaking because it challenged traditional notions of art and exhibition spaces. It blurs the lines between art and reality by creating a beautiful and disorienting environment.

In my 15 hour exam i wanted to make boxes with some of my prints inside inspired by the two artists (Yayoi Kusuma & William Morris) I started by sanding down my boxes with an electric sander to make sure my boxes are smooth and not rough. I then decided to paint my boxes each different colour with acrylic paint, once they had dried I used acrylic colour markers to add dots and lines. I then decided to start printmaking my patterns on different coloured paper, I then had to choose which prints i wanted in my boxes.
