Hapi Dr. Ben day🤎🤎🤎
Yosef Alfredo Antonio Ben-Jochannan, or better known as "Dr. Ben",
born December 31,1918.
An American Master Teacher, writer and historian.
Ben-Jochannan was the only child of an Afro Puerto Rican Jewish mother named Julia Matta and an Ethiopian father named Kriston Ben-Jochannan, in a Falasha community in Ethiopia. Known as Dr. Ben, he was educated in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Cuba, and Spain, earning degrees in engineering and anthropology. In 1938, Ben-Jochannan earned a BS in Civil Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico and a Master's degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Havana, Cuba in 1939. He received doctoral degrees in Cultural Anthropology and Moorish History from the University of Havana and the University of Barcelona, Spain. Ben-Jochannan immigrated to the United States in the early 1940s. He worked as a draftsman and continued his studies.
In 1945, he was appointed chairman of the African Studies Committee at the headquarters of the newly founded UNESCO, a position from which he stepped down in 1970. During that time he taught Egyptology at Malcolm King College, then at City College in New York City. From 1976 to 1987, he was an adjunct professor at Cornell University. Ben-Jochannan is the author of 49 books, primarily on ancient Nile Valley civilizations and their impact on Western cultures. In his writings, he argues that the original Jews were from Ethiopia and were Black Africans, while the white Jews later adopted the Jewish faith and its customs, statement that have been widely criticized.
In 1993, Wellesley College European classics professor Mary Lefkowitz publicly confronted Ben-Jochannan about his teachings. Ben-Jochannan taught that Aristotle visited the Library of Alexandria. During the question and answer session following the lecture, Lefkowitz asked Ben-Jochannan, "How would that have been possible, when the library was not built until after his death?" Ben-Jochannan replied that the dates were uncertain. Lefkowitz wrote that Ben-Jochannan proceeded to tell those present that "they could and should believe what black instructors told them" and "that although they might think that Jews were all 'hook-nosed and sallow faced,' there were other Jews who looked like himself. He also appeared on Gil Noble's WABC-TV weekly public affairs series Like It Is.
In 2002, Ben-Jochannan donated his personal library of more than 35,000 volumes, manuscripts and ancient scrolls to the Nation of Islam.
In the years before his death, Ben-Jochannan lived in Harlem, New York City in the Lenox Terrace Co-ops.
Ben-Jochannan died on March 19, 2015, at the age of 96, at the Bay Park Nursing Home in the Bronx.

:: SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2003 ::
OK, I was driving down Park Terrace in Wellesley, minding my own business. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I see this dog sitting down. I jam on my brakes, and pull over to the side of the road. Of course, the dog is trying to take a shit. I'm staring at this dog for like 3 minutes, and he's not doing anything. The owner of the dog is just staring at me, wondering what the hell I'm doing, and I'm staring back at him. My mom is like, "What the hell are you doing??", and she's screaming at me and laughing at me because of me stupidity and amusement of this dog trying to take a crap. I'm pretty sick.

the biography
-
the daughter to a (now) disgraced politician coming from old money and a disgruntled, yet loyal to a fault, housewife, there was never a time victoire didn’t know luxury  — or chaos.
as a matter of fact, her entrance to the world was an example of both. the first  — and what would ultimately be only — child to gabriel and nicolette bisset, there was no expense spared as they prepared for her arrival; hundreds of designer onesies she’d grow out of within weeks were purchased, an italian artist flown in and commissioned to hand paint a mural in her nursery and her mother only received the finest of prenatal care. for most, it was an ostentatious display that was NOT needed. but that has always been the bisset way. flamboyant and shameless flaunting of their wealth was the norm as it was, so of course they’d go all out when expecting a baby.
at the same time, there was a certain level of disappointment. as far as her father went, at least. he had been hoping for a son to follow in his footsteps. but, he’d tell his wife in an attempt to convince them both, a little girl wasn’t so bad  — he’d love, cherish and spoil her regardless. and he did do at least two of those three things. but that son he’d been hoping for never came. once victoire was born, his wife refused to let him touch her. he assumed it was “baby hormones” but really it was because hours before her baby shower, nicolette had received a call from one of his mistresses confessing the affair because she felt “bad” knowing she was pregnant. nicolette never confronted her husband but their relationship was never the same.
growing up in the lapse of luxury, most would assume vic had nothing to complain about. while her material needs were always met, the emotional ones were often neglected. her mother, bless her heart, tried. but it wasn’t easy for her. nicolette was responsible for raising their child and presenting the bissets as the picture perfect family all while knowing her husband was fucking around on her. who wouldn’t become resentful dealing with that? snide comments were thrown across the dinner table, there were times she’d disappear in her room with a bottle of wine. she’d try to be there for her daughter as much as she could but she struggled. and her father, on the other hand, focused more on his career than his family. a lawyer turned politician, he campaigned, had frequent business meetings and a long list of secret lovers to split his time between. hard to be present with a schedule like that.
gabriel’s career choice was confusing for young victoire. there were those that publicly villainized him and thought he was the devil. there were those that put him on a pedestal. it was overwhelming... and alluring. her father was the mayor of wellesley her entire life and was even campaigning for senate when the “scandal” happened. it was always a part of her life and politics intrigued her. she’d dreamed of being the first woman president.
her father vowed to help her get into politics and the first step of that was hiring her to be his publicist as soon as she graduated from college. it was a blatant act of nepotism but at least she was really freakin’ good at her job. she gets word accusations of bribery would be hitting the local news and that same day there’s a press conference so shots of him shaking hands, kissing babies and making grand promises distracts from the news. his morality is called into question and he’s front and center campaigning for every local charity for six months. it was a bit grimey witnessing fully the seedy underbelly of politics and her idealistic view of it changed drastically. she no longer wanted to be president or a senator or anything else like that. she did, though, learn she really did like pr and enjoyed the role she had. at least until she was expected to pay off her father’s pregnant mistress who was threatening to spill the beans about their illicit affair.
while her mother had known about his infidelities for years, vic had no clue. she always assumed her father was working. that was why he couldn’t come to her recitals or presentations in school. that was why he was late to every single one of her birthday parties. she had convinced herself that her father wasn’t a scumbag but a highly ambitious politician and anyone else in his position would do the same.
to an extent, she had idolized her father  — glorifying the parent who was never really there and whose approval she would have died to get. the version of him she had created was destroyed. she was furious, heartbroken and confused. she quit that very day and a week later, the news broke. that one woman speaking out opened the floodgates and years of affairs and other naughty behavior was broadcasted across the state. her mother would have made tammy wynette proud with how she stood by her man but victoire did not follow suit. she worked in public relations so she never outright spoke against him because no one would hire her after publicly blasting a former client in the press. even if it was her father. but she knew how to expertly throw shade. and she did. quite a few times, actually.
after she quit, victoire ended up in new york where she worked with a pr firm for a couple of years before getting a job with a more prestigious one in los angeles which prompted her move to silver lake. it’s been surprisingly difficult for her to adjust to life on the west coast. she’s a new england girl through and through and there’s just something about palm trees and sunshine that feels wrong. she also just really misses her family. well, just her mother really. they make do by facetiming twice a week and they’re even in the middle of discussing flying her out for the holidays. unfortunately, though, it’s unlikely to happen as her mother is insistent on bringing gabriel. victoire hasn’t seen or spoken to her father since the day she told him to go fuck himself and stormed out of his office. not because of any guilt from “abandoning” her father. — she’d add ‘essentially ruined my father’s political career’ to her resume if she thought it’d help her —  but because she is still so damn angry. the closest thing to contact they have is him wiring her money every month. this “allowance” isn’t really needed, victoire makes a very good living without needing any of what she calls bisset blood money. but she allows it to continue because she considers it restitution for decades of lackluster parenting and lies.
where victoire really shines is her career. she’s relatively new to the scene  — at least compared to most publicists in hollywood  — with only seven years of experience under her belt but don’t confuse quantity with quality. if you are a public figure, you want vic on your team. she’s tenacious and, while some may view her methods as underhanded, there is no story she can’t get ahead of. and if she can’t distract from it entirely, she can turn it into a positive or at least paint her client as the victim. duis, public disagreements with significant others, leaked sex tapes. she’s seen it all. she’d dedicated to the cause and makes up her own rules, but also has a strict moral code so she won’t do something or work with someone that goes against that.
victoire thrives in social situations and really loves to hear herself talk. she also tends to assume she’s the smartest person in the room and just expects everyone to go along with what she says. and she doesn’t really handle it well when that doesn’t happen. some may say she’s stubborn, she says she’s a leader who likes to take charge and handle things. she’s a very honest and straightforward person who is clear about her intentions in a relationship whether it’s professional, platonic or romantic. she doesn’t play games, she’s not wishy-washy and she has a tendency to see the world in black and white.
coming from a long line of elitists, vic is proud to say that is at least one pattern she broke. she just isn’t one to parade around her wealth. yes, she has a nice house and she does tend to favor designer brands when it comes to clothing, but there really isn’t anything pretentious about her. the closest you’ll get is her having dinner at a five star restaurant or buying a ridiculously expensive bottle of wine. but that’s only because she likes good food and even better wine. she’s not one to show off and is just as likely to be seen at a fancy hollywood party mingling with clients as she is laying on her couch, wrapped up in blankets and watching golden girls reruns. she’s a combination of dorothy and blanche, by the way.
-
anyways, i think this is long enough so i’ll wrap it up and just say i am excited to be here and that i look forward to writing with you all. i’ll be reaching out to everyone regarding plots at some point (i say some point because i’m a slow typer with a small attention span who is currently working 60 hours a week so i’m easily distracted AND tired) but you can expedite the process by sending me a message or liking this and i’ll put you at the top of my list. in the meantime, though, feel free to just assume connections. we can go with the flow and i don’t require connections before interacting anyway. aaaand now i’m really stopping!

Then we went to a Mr Hunnewells, about 5 mile off at a place called Wellesley[.] He is very wealthy & has a magnificent property bordering a considerable lake with grass & wooded hills all about and undulated ground Scottish in character. In 20 years he has made a most beautiful garden of many acres, the House too is beautiful one, overlooks the Lake some 60 ft below, & the descent is by a series of terraces with rows of clipped mazes and of Hemlock Spruce & other plants down to a water balustraded with vases & paths bordered with mixed beds of flowers & shrubs, all kept as beautifully as the best English garden with infinitely more taste care & variety than any English garden I know of. [...] On the opposite banks of the Lake is as magnificent a property also of many hundred acres given to the state by a Mr Durant for a school to educate female school teachers at about £50 a year for board & instruction. Mr D. has built on it a stupendous red brick College, which occupies a beautiful swelling mount of drift.--This building holds 400 pupils, & is a really handsome pile. He has filled it up with class rooms for all Literary teaching & laboratories for all scientific researches & for all branches of physical & biological researches; he has furnished it throughout & provided a staff of Professors & a most beautiful Library, where I saw Bot[anical] Magazines & at least 20 of my fathers & my works. The whole cannot costless than half a million Stirling, & no one supposes it can ever be self-supporting. I send you a copy of the prospectus.--Education is all the rage here; wealthy people do not know what to do with their money.
Letter from Joseph Dalton Hooker to his wife Hyacinth, 7 October 1877.

week six | feedback
To make sense of my initial design, and my new interests following the art gallery visit, I talked to Xavier about where I might go next. He suggested:
Taking into consideration the programming of the terrace. How big is the terrace? What pathways are taken to access the terrace? Is there a relationship between the North and East terrace?
Consider the various viewpoints from the Albert Park footpaths, Wellesley St. footpaths, and the art gallery interior itself.
Consider the scale of the tiles. Instead of making them the actual walls, how about scaling them down to fit a specific frame.
Could you do one big interconnected pavilion or a series of mini pavilions? Dispersed or accumulated?
To try and make sense of the size of the terrace, look into previous installations in the East terrace.
Artists to research: Jeppe Hein, Selgas Cano (Serpentine Pavilion), Judy Darragh, Kate Newby

Hornets’ Gordon Hayward Scores Swanky Estate in Charlotte for $4.7M
Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images
NBA’s Gordon Hayward has scored a sweet mansion in Charlotte, NC. The All-Star was in search of a fresh start after leaving the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade deal—and was in need of a new home as well.
Hayward picked up his new digs for $4.7 million in January. Built in 2006, the home was listed for $4,695,000 in December of last year, and sold for the asking price shortly thereafter.
The nearly 8,800-square-foot space gives the sharpshooting forward plenty of room to spread out.
He’ll also be able to practice his golf game when he’s not on the hardwood. The custom estate on 1.24 acres sits on the 16th hole of Carmel Country Club, in a private cul-de-sac.

With views of the greens and pond, the mansion has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms.
You enter the main level through double doors guarded by statues of lions, into the formal living and dining room, which have floor-to-ceiling windows. A large great room overlooks the terrace.
The main level also includes the master suite, which comes with a sitting area, dual bathrooms, and walk-in closets.
The well-appointed gourmet kitchen features leaded glass cabinets, dual islands, antique lighting, and a glassed breakfast room. The kitchen also boasts a butler’s pantry and wine cellar. The main floor also has a wood-paneled office with built-ins.
Upstairs, a media room contains a kitchenette and terrace. Other details include dual staircases, an elevator, and two laundry rooms.
Outside, the luxe space off the main level features a heated pool, an elevated spa and deck, a covered area with a kitchen and bar, and a gas fireplace.
A custom bridge or stage that fits over the pool comes in handy for parties.
Hayward is no slouch in the real estate department. In 2015, he nabbed an off-season villa in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, an upscale area north of San Diego, for $3.3 million.
The swanky SoCal retreat, which he purchased while playing for the Utah Jazz, was upgraded in the time he  owned it. That getaway featured seven bedrooms, 7,260 square feet, and over 2 acres, with a luxe pool, poolhouse, tennis court, and detached nanny quarters. After about five years, he sold the place for $3.9 million.
Hayward also reportedly sold his Wellesley, MA, estate for a hefty profit. He purchased the 5-acre spread in 2017 for $4.2 million. it included seven bedrooms, almost 9,000 square feet of living space, and a luxurious master suite, with six additional bedroom suites, an oversized kitchen, a lower level with a media room, gym, playroom, and guest suite.
The almost-new build from 2016 came with an adjoining lot, and the asking price in December was $6.65 million. The home sold for $6.25 million earlier this year.
When not trading real estate, Hayward, 31, stars for the Hornets. He battled multiple injuries during his tenure with Boston from 2017 to 2020. When he became a free agent, he reportedly signed a $120 million deal with Charlotte. The Indianapolis native had played earlier with the Utah Jazz, who selected him in the first round of the draft in 2010.
Amy Peterson with Allen Tate Realtors-Charlotte-SouthPark represented the seller. Valerie Mitchener with HM Properties represented the buyer.

For $4.85m, a North End escape from the city landscape
Megan Johnson — Globe correspondent
March 9, 2021 5:00 pm
Just in time for spring, a four-bedroom condominium in Boston’s North End with a 1,200-square-foot terrace has hit the market.
Listed at $4,850,000, Unit 1010 at 234 Causeway St. is on the 10th floor of the Strada 234 building and offers 2,899 square feet of living space, including three full baths and one half bath.
“People are coming back into the city and vaccines are rolling out,” said Tina Bacci, a broker with RESIS Global Advisory Group and the listing agent on the property. “We’re feeling a lot more action with city properties, especially in the higher end.”
And properties with outdoor space are drawing buyers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think outdoor space has become very important to people that live in urban environments,” Bacci said.
The terrace off this unit is lined with raised planting beds and towers over the buildings across the street, offering a view that spans from Logan International Aiport to Boston Harbor to Back Bay, according to the listing.
Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows span the dining area and the living room, which has a separate viewing space. The condo features reclaimed wood and textured finishes, as well as built-ins and high-end lighting and window treatments. The kitchen beckons conversation with the chef, offering a curved island with bar seating,  as well as three refrigerators, three ovens, and a 100-plus-bottle wine cellar.
The primary bedroom suite comes with the same floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as access to the terrace. A spacious Interlübke dressing room offers plenty of storage space, while the adjoining bathroom has a steam shower and hot tub.
“It has a lot of features that you’ll find in a single-family home in the suburbs,” said Bacci, citing the laundry room with the double washer and dryer setup and the pantry. “This is the kind of thing you’d see in a 6-, 7-, 8,000-square-foot home in Weston or Wellesley.”
The unit comes with three valet parking spaces and two storage units. The building also has 24-hour concierge service and a fitness center.
The lower portion of the building dates to 1906, but three units were combined to create this home in 2003. The building rose to fame as the Sunshine Biscuit Co.’s Boston factory, then known for snacks like Cheez-Its, Hydrox, and Vienna Fingers. In the latter half of the 20th century, the building was a Stop & Shop bakery and then a storage facility for the supermarket chain.

68-70 Wellesley Roof Replacement
ERA Architects Inc (2020)
Historically known as the William McBean Terrace, this designated heritage building is located at the northeast corner of Church and Wellesley Streets in Toronto’s Church-Wellesley neighbourhood. The extant buildings were constructed in 1878 and designed as a group of 2½-storey row houses that were later converted to commercial and residential uses.
Some signature heritage attributes that were restored include painted brick cladding with stone and wood detailing, the mansard roof with the decorative shingles, the extended eaves with brackets, and the dormers with decorative detailing.
My involvement in the project occurred during the Contract Administration phase, where I conducted regular site reviews, prepared field review reports, selected finishes, reviewed samples and mockups with the contractor, and coordinated any changes with City of Toronto Heritage Staff.
